Uber Black runs in Rome, and Uber publishes what it has typically cost. On its Fiumicino airport pages, the average Black fare from the airport into Rome over the month before we checked in October 2026 was about €101, and about €111 in the other direction. Uber states plainly that these are averages, not fixed or guaranteed prices; the fare in the app moves with the hour, the traffic and the number of people requesting at that moment.
A pre-booked chauffeur from Elly8.net on the same route is a fixed price per vehicle, agreed before you fly and charged in US dollars: from US$180 in a business sedan, US$235 in a business SUV and US$315 in a first class sedan between Fiumicino (FCO) and the historic centre, all-in. Which one makes sense depends less on the headline number than on the trip itself: when you land, how many bags you carry, who is with you, and whether the price has to be settled before you leave home.
How much is Uber Black in Rome?
Uber's own pages showed an average Black fare of about €101 from Fiumicino into Rome and €111 from Rome to the airport over the previous month, with Ciampino to Rome at about €88. Uber says these are averages, not guaranteed prices. An Elly8.net business sedan from FCO is a fixed US$180, a first class sedan US$315.
These figures are useful because they come from Uber itself rather than from a forum thread. When we checked, Uber's Rome airport and route pages listed these averages for the past month:
| Uber option | Seats | FCO to Rome | Rome to FCO | Ciampino to Rome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi (licensed taxi booked in the app) | 4 | about €58 | about €58 | about €47 |
| Comfort | 4 | about €71 | about €80 | about €63 |
| Taxi Van | 6 | about €75 | about €74 | about €65 |
| Electric | 4 | not listed | about €84 | not listed |
| Van | 6 | about €116 | about €124 | about €97 |
| Black | 4 | about €101 | about €111 | about €88 |
Averages hide the spread. A Black request on a quiet Tuesday afternoon can come in under the average; the same request when several transatlantic flights land within an hour, during Holy Week or on a match night at the Stadio Olimpico can come in well above it. Uber's own pages say the price depends on the ride type, the length and duration of the trip, tolls, city fees and current demand.
What the Uber menu looks like in Rome
North American travellers often open the app expecting UberX. On the Rome airport pages we checked, the options shown were Taxi, Comfort, Electric, Van, Taxi Van and Black; UberX did not appear in that list. The cheapest line, Taxi, is a licensed Roman taxi requested through the app. Uber describes it as a maximum fare guaranteed for the selected trip, with the booking fee included: you pay the lower of that figure and the final meter.
That detail matters at Fiumicino, because Rome's licensed taxis already charge a fixed fare from the airport. Roma Servizi per la Mobilità lists €55 per car from Fiumicino to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls and €40 from Ciampino, supplements included. The app's average for its Taxi option sits a few euros above the rank fare, which is roughly what a booking fee would explain.
Black is Uber's premium tier: Uber describes it as rides in luxury cars with professional drivers, with four seats. For a solo traveller or a couple, it is a comfortable and often sensible way into the city. For a family, the four-seat limit is the first thing to check.
On demand or reserved: what the app actually commits to
An on-demand Black request is matched in real time to a nearby driver. Because Black draws on a smaller pool of cars than the standard options, how quickly one arrives depends on how many are working near the terminal when you request. Nothing in the app shows that before you land.
Uber Reserve narrows the gap. Uber's Fiumicino page says you can reserve up to 90 days ahead, lock in an upfront price, add your flight details for tracking, and cancel for free until one hour before pickup or while no driver has accepted the trip. Uber also notes that it does not guarantee a driver will accept a reserved request; the ride is confirmed once you receive the driver's details.
That free cancellation window is a genuine advantage, and fairness says it should be stated plainly: Elly8.net's terms are stricter. Ours are free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, refunded to the original card. What the stricter terms buy is commitment on our side: a confirmed vehicle class at a fixed price per vehicle, with the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet included, from the moment you book.
Meeting the car at Fiumicino and Ciampino
With an app ride, you clear passport control, collect your bags, then request the car and follow the step-by-step pickup directions the app gives after the match. Uber notes that its airport maps are illustrative and that the exact pickup point depends on your terminal, the time, airport rules and construction.
Aeroporti di Roma draws a firm line between the services at the kerb. Its chauffeur service page says hire cars with driver, known in Italy as NCC, must be booked in advance and cannot be taken from the taxi rank, and that taxis remain the only service you can walk up to. It also warns travellers to be careful of transport offers made inside the terminal by unauthorised people. A pre-booked chauffeur fits inside those rules by design.
An Elly8.net chauffeur works the other way round from an app. The flight is tracked from departure, the chauffeur waits inside the arrivals hall of your terminal with a name board, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, which matters when a long passport queue follows an overnight flight from New York or Toronto. Nothing needs to be requested on a phone that may not yet have a local data plan. Our arrival guide for Rome walks through the hand-over minute by minute, and airport meet and greet explains how it works everywhere we operate.
Luggage, car seats and the historic centre
Luggage. Uber's airport page says cargo space is not guaranteed, varies by vehicle and is planned around checked bags of up to 158 linear centimetres (62 linear inches); it suggests contacting the driver after matching and ordering a second car if the bags will not fit. With Black you can ask for luggage assistance when you request, at the driver's discretion. On our side, the fleet page lists capacity by class: a business sedan or first class sedan carries three passengers and two bags, a business SUV or first class SUV six passengers and six bags, and an Executive Sprinter twelve passengers and twelve bags.
Car seats. Uber's page is direct about it: drivers are not guaranteed to have car seats, but riders may bring their own. Elly8.net fits child and booster seats on request before pickup; give the children's ages when you book.
The limited traffic zone. Rome's centre sits inside the ZTL, the limited traffic zones, which are reserved for authorised vehicles on set days and at set hours. Roma Mobilità lists taxis and licensed hire cars with driver among the exempt categories, so a licensed chauffeur can take you to a hotel inside the zone, within the limits of pedestrian squares and narrow lanes. Tell us the exact hotel when you book and the partner plans the approach.
Side by side: Fiumicino to the historic centre
| Option | Price | How it is set | Where you meet it | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leonardo Express train | €14 per person | published fare | airport station, to Termini only | one traveller, light bag, hotel near Termini |
| Licensed taxi at the rank | €55 per car | fixed by the city, inside the Aurelian Walls | taxi rank, Terminal 1 or 3 arrivals | walk-up, two people, few bags |
| Uber Taxi | about €58 average | maximum fare shown in the app | app pickup point | app users who want a taxi without the queue |
| Uber Black | about €101 average | live price, or upfront with Reserve | app pickup point | a solo traveller wanting a premium car |
| Elly8.net business sedan | US$180 per vehicle | fixed before you travel | inside arrivals, name board | late flights, fixed budgets, two travellers |
| Elly8.net business SUV | US$235 per vehicle | fixed before you travel | inside arrivals, name board | families of up to six with six bags |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter | US$470 per vehicle | fixed before you travel | inside arrivals, name board | groups of up to twelve |
The train figures come from Aeroporti di Roma's train page: 32 minutes nonstop to Roma Termini, every 15 minutes, €14. Uber figures are Uber's own monthly averages. Elly8.net prices are in US dollars and the others in euros, so your card's exchange rate applies to the euro fares.
When Uber Black is the smarter call
- You are travelling alone or as a couple, with carry-on bags, at an ordinary hour.
- Your plans may change at short notice and Reserve's one-hour free cancellation matters more than a confirmed car.
- You want a short premium hop across the city after dinner, say from Prati to Trastevere, and are happy to see what the app offers.
- You already pay for rides through an Uber business profile and want everything in one place.
For those trips, Black is a perfectly reasonable choice, and the licensed taxi at a fixed €55 from Fiumicino is honest value too. Our Rome airport taxi and rideshare guide sets out the rank rules in detail.
When a booked chauffeur wins
- Early and late landings. Overnight flights from North America reach Fiumicino in the morning rush, and late arrivals land when on-demand supply is thinner. A booked car is assigned before you fly, and the price does not move with the traffic.
- Families and car seats. Seats fitted before pickup, a business SUV for six with six bags, and one vehicle instead of two app cars arriving at different times.
- Groups. A wedding party or a team of ten travels together in one Executive Sprinter at US$470 per vehicle from FCO.
- Meetings at the other end. A corporate account adds fixed fares at both airports, monthly invoicing and NDAs on request, and the corporate roadshow day keeps one chauffeur with you for ten hours, from US$765 in a business sedan.
- A fixed budget in your own currency. The fare is set in US dollars when you book, so there is no conversion surprise and no demand pricing on arrival day.

Black against our classes: what is like-for-like?
Uber Black sits closest to our first class sedan, a Mercedes-Benz S-Class or similar, at US$315 between Fiumicino and the historic centre or US$140 an hour with a three-hour minimum. If what you want is simply a clean, quiet, professionally driven car rather than a particular badge, the business sedan, an E-Class or similar, at US$180 is the closer match on price. From Ciampino, the same two classes cost US$220 and US$125.
One difference cuts the other way and deserves saying: Black seats four, while our sedans are set up for three passengers and two bags. A party of four with suitcases is better served by the business SUV at US$235 from FCO, or the first class SUV at US$290.
Beyond the airport: day trips, the port and nights out
Uber publishes route averages beyond the airport too. When we checked, Black from Rome to Tivoli averaged about €113 one way, and Black from Rome to Civitavecchia about €212 one way. Both are one-way figures. A day at Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa needs a car that waits and brings you back, which is exactly what our six-hour Tivoli package does, from US$470 in a business sedan, all-in; our Rome to Tivoli guide compares it with the train.
For cruise passengers, the port of Civitavecchia is not on our fixed price list, so the web booker returns a fixed fare for your ship and boarding time. Our Civitavecchia transfer guide covers the terminals and the train.
Inside the city, the evening out and event night package keeps a car waiting for five hours, from US$425 in a business sedan, and Rome car service by the hour starts at US$85 an hour with a three-hour minimum. Both avoid the moment when everyone leaves a venue at once and the app prices follow.

Frequently asked questions
Is Uber Black available in Rome?
Yes. Uber lists Black among its options at Fiumicino and Ciampino and on routes around Rome, and published an average of about €101 from FCO into the city over the month before we checked. Whether a Black car is free near you at a given moment only shows in the app when you request.
Is there UberX in Rome?
On the Rome airport pages we checked, Uber listed Taxi, Comfort, Electric, Van, Taxi Van and Black, and UberX did not appear. The cheapest app option was Taxi, a licensed Roman taxi requested through Uber with a maximum fare shown in advance and the booking fee included.
Is a booked chauffeur more expensive than Uber Black?
Usually, yes, before currency. A business sedan from Fiumicino to the historic centre is a fixed US$180 and a first class sedan US$315, against Uber's published Black average of about €101. The difference buys a confirmed car, a chauffeur waiting inside arrivals, child seats on request and a price fixed in US dollars before you fly.
Can Uber Black take four people and luggage from Fiumicino?
Black seats four, but Uber says cargo space is not guaranteed and suggests a second car if bags will not fit. For four travellers with suitcases, an Elly8.net business SUV carries six passengers and six bags, a fixed US$235 per vehicle from FCO to the historic centre.
Can Uber or a chauffeur drive into Rome's ZTL?
Roma Mobilità lists taxis and licensed hire cars with driver among the vehicles exempt from the ZTL Centro Storico and Tridente restrictions. Elly8.net chauffeurs in Rome are licensed hire cars with driver, so they can reach hotels inside the zone, stopping at the nearest permitted point where a square is pedestrian-only.
What is the cancellation policy for a Rome chauffeur?
Free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go back to the original card. Uber Reserve's terms are more flexible, which is worth weighing if your plans are uncertain.
