Manchester has three kinds of car for hire, and visitors from North America often mix them up. Black cabs, the licensed hackney carriages, can be hailed in the street or taken from a rank and run on a meter with a council-set fare table. Private hire vehicles, which include the cars booked through Uber and other apps, must be pre-booked and cannot use the ranks. And a pre-booked chauffeur from Elly8.net is a private hire booking made in advance at a fixed, all-in price.
For a short hop across the city centre, a black cab or an app ride is the sensible choice, and the tram or a walk is often better still. This guide sets out what each option costs, using the council's published fares, and when a private car is genuinely the better call.
Is Uber cheaper than a black cab in Manchester?
Often, for short off-peak trips, an app ride quotes less than a black cab's meter, but the app price rises with demand on match nights, concert nights and in bad weather. Black cab fares are fixed by the council's table and can be hailed or taken from a rank. For one traveller near a tram stop, public transport beats both.
The honest answer depends on when you travel. A black cab's meter follows the same published tariff whenever you ride, with a night rate after 10pm. An app's price is set at the moment you request the ride. On a quiet Tuesday afternoon the app is usually competitive; on a Saturday night after a match it may not be.

Black cab fares, from the council's table
Manchester City Council publishes the maximum hackney carriage fares, effective from 15 September 2023, for journeys that start within the city boundary and end no more than four miles beyond it within Greater Manchester. The meter calculates time and distance automatically.
| Item | Day rate (6am to 10pm) | Night rate (10pm to 6am, bank holidays) |
|---|---|---|
| First part of the journey | £3.40 for the first 348 m | £3.80 for the first 211 m |
| Then | 20p per 123 m | 20p per 92.5 m |
| Waiting | 20p every 31.57 seconds | 20p every 23.84 seconds |
| Average cost, 1 mile (1.6 km) | £5.80 | £6.80 |
| Average cost, 5 miles (8 km) | £16.20 | £20.80 |
| Average cost, 10 miles (16.1 km) | £29.20 | £38.00 |
Extras are listed too: 20p for each passenger beyond the hirer, 60p through the Piccadilly Station taxi rank barrier, and at Manchester Airport a £1.80 barrier charge for a pickup at a terminal, 60p at the Airport Rail Link and £3 for a drop-off at a terminal. Over Christmas and New Year, the night rate plus 50% applies at set times. The council's averages exclude waiting time, so traffic adds to them.
Journeys beyond the four-mile limit, and into Cheshire, count as out of area: the fare is normally agreed with the driver before you set off, and the council notes it is custom for drivers to quote such journeys at the meter fare plus one third. That matters for trips to the country-house hotels south of the airport.
How Uber and private hire work in Manchester
Private hire vehicles are licensed differently from black cabs. The council says official taxi ranks may be used by any hackney carriage but not by private hire vehicles, and that a private hire vehicle must display a fare card, so you should check the cost before the journey starts when you pre-book. Every app ride is a private hire booking.
Uber operates across the city and at the airport. Manchester Airport says private hire operators use common pickup areas signed Express Pick Up at Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, and lists UberX, XL, Electric and Exec among the options. App prices are not published for any route, and we do not invent them. We cover availability and surge in more depth in our guide to Uber in Manchester.
The train, the tram and walking
Manchester city centre is compact. Deansgate, Spinningfields, St Peter's Square and Piccadilly are a walk apart, and the Metrolink tram runs through the streets. From the airport, trains to Manchester Piccadilly take about 20 minutes and run every 10 minutes, according to Manchester Airport, with the station a short walk from the terminals.
For one or two people with light bags, the train or tram is the right answer, and no car competes on price. The limits are luggage, late nights, and destinations away from the lines, such as some hotels in Salford Quays or the suburbs.
Where Manchester's districts make the decision
Each part of the city behaves differently when you need a car.
Deansgate, Spinningfields and St Peter's Square. The business and hotel core. Ranks, app pickups and the tram are all close by, and most trips are short enough to walk. A car is only worth booking here for luggage, a group or a meeting day with several stops.
Piccadilly, the Northern Quarter and Ancoats. The station, the restaurants and the nightlife. The council says some city-centre ranks are supported by taxi marshals during busy weekend hours, a sign of how much demand there is late on Friday and Saturday nights. App waiting times stretch at the same moments, which is when a booked car with an agreed meeting point helps.
Salford Quays and MediaCityUK. West along the Ship Canal, about 5 km (3 mi) from the centre by our routed estimate. The tram serves it, and by day apps work well; production crews and executives with equipment or tight call times book by the hour. See film, TV and production transportation.
The Etihad Campus and Old Trafford. On non-event days, ordinary short trips. On match and concert days, road closures, crowds and peak demand for every kind of car.
South Manchester and Cheshire. Didsbury, Altrincham and the country-house hotels south of the airport. Some of these trips leave the area where the black cab meter is compulsory, so the fare is negotiated; with Elly8.net the price is fixed before you travel.
Six Manchester trips, compared
Distances are our routed estimates on a clear road. Black cab figures use the council's published averages, which exclude waiting; app prices are described, not invented; Elly8.net prices are fixed and per vehicle.
| Trip | Distance | Black cab | Uber or app | Elly8.net |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Piccadilly to the Etihad Stadium | 3 km / 2 mi | Short day fare; road closures on match days | Price rises with match demand | Evening out from US$425 |
| Deansgate to Old Trafford | 6 km / 4 mi | Around the 5-mile average or less | Surge after the final whistle | Evening out from US$425 |
| City centre to MediaCityUK | 5 km / 3 mi | Short meter fare | Usually easy by day | By the hour from US$85 |
| Northern Quarter to Didsbury | 10 km / 6 mi | Between the 5- and 10-mile averages | Late-night demand varies | By the hour from US$85 |
| Airport to the city centre | 15 to 17 km / 9 to 10 mi | About the 10-mile average (£29.20 day, £38.00 night), plus £1.80 pickup | Express Pick Up areas | From US$120 business sedan |
| Day in the Lake District | about 134 km / 83 mi to Windermere | Out of area, negotiated | Not practical | Lake District day from US$785 |
When a black cab or an app ride is the smarter call
Choose a cab, an app or the tram when:
- You are one or two people with small bags going a short distance across the centre.
- It is a weekday daytime trip with no match, concert or conference finishing at the same time.
- You do not need the car to wait while you eat or meet.
- You are near a rank, or comfortable walking to an app pickup point.
When a pre-booked private car wins
Elly8.net makes sense in Manchester in a clear set of situations:
- Airport arrivals with luggage. The chauffeur tracks your flight, waits in arrivals with a name board, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary.
- Groups. A black cab carries at least five passengers, and some take six, but luggage space is limited. An Executive Sprinter carries up to twelve passengers and twelve bags as one vehicle.
- Match days and concert nights. At the Etihad, Old Trafford and Co-op Live, roads close and demand for cars peaks at the same moment. A chauffeur waiting at an agreed point outside the closures is easier than a rank queue or an app surge.
- Trips beyond the four-mile limit. Out-of-area cab fares are negotiated. Ours are fixed in advance, including the Lake District day.
- Corporate days. Meetings in Spinningfields, MediaCityUK and Manchester Central with the car waiting between them.

Wheelchairs, child seats and rental cars
Accessibility is one area where the black cab stands out. Manchester Airport describes its black cab fleet as 100% wheelchair accessible, and says the cabs take at least five passengers plus luggage. For a traveller who uses a wheelchair and is making a short trip, a cab from the rank is often the most straightforward choice. If you need a private car instead, tell the desk about the wheelchair or walking aid when you book so the vehicle has the right space.
Child seats work the other way. Cabs and app cars do not usually arrive with a seat fitted for your child's age. With Elly8.net you request child or booster seats at booking, give the ages, and the partner fits them before pickup.
Some visitors consider renting a car instead. England drives on the left, the city centre has trams running in the streets, bus gates and one-way systems, and central parking is expensive. For a day in the Lake District a rental can make sense for confident drivers; for getting around Manchester itself, most North American visitors are happier being driven. Our chauffeur vs car rental guide covers the trade-offs.
What a private car costs in Manchester
Every Elly8.net price for Manchester is fixed, all-in and per vehicle, never per person, and charged in US dollars. It includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet; tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost.
- Manchester Airport to the city centre: from US$120 in a business sedan, US$160 in a business SUV, US$195 in a First Class SUV, US$210 in a First Class Sedan and US$315 in an Executive Sprinter, the same in either direction.
- Airport round trip: from US$230 in a business sedan to US$600 in a Sprinter.
- By the hour: from US$85 in a business sedan to US$170 in a Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum.
- Evening out and event night: from US$425 to US$850.
- Full-day chauffeur: from US$630 to US$1,255.
As arithmetic for comparison only, a US$315 Sprinter from the airport shared by nine supporters works out at US$35 each, and replaces at least two cabs. The fleet page shows what each class carries: three passengers and two bags in a sedan, six and six in an SUV, twelve and twelve in a Sprinter.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a black cab in Manchester?
Under the council's fare table effective from 15 September 2023, the day rate starts at £3.40, with published averages of £5.80 for one mile, £16.20 for five miles and £29.20 for ten miles, excluding waiting. Night rates, from 10pm to 6am and on bank holidays, are higher.
Can Uber pick up from taxi ranks in Manchester?
No. The council says official taxi ranks may be used by any hackney carriage but not by private hire vehicles, and app rides are private hire. Use the pickup point the app gives you; at the airport, private hire uses the Express Pick Up areas at Terminal 2 and Terminal 3.
How much is a taxi from Manchester Airport to the city centre?
The airport to the city centre is about 15 to 17 km (9 to 10 mi). The council's average for ten miles is £29.20 by day and £38.00 at night, excluding waiting, and a terminal pickup adds a £1.80 barrier charge. A fixed Elly8.net business sedan costs US$120.
Is the train better than a taxi from Manchester Airport?
For one traveller with light bags staying near Piccadilly, yes: trains take about 20 minutes and run every 10 minutes. For families, groups, late arrivals or hotels away from the station, a car door to door is simpler, with the bags loaded once at the terminal and unloaded at the hotel entrance.
Do black cabs take card payments in Manchester?
Yes. The council says no additional charges can be added if you pay by debit or credit card, and Manchester Airport says its black cabs accept credit cards with no added fees. Elly8.net bookings are paid in advance by card in US dollars, so there is nothing to pay at the end.
Can a chauffeur get us to a match at the Etihad or Old Trafford?
Yes. The chauffeur drops you outside the match-day closures and collects you from a point agreed in advance. The evening out and event night package costs from US$425 in a business sedan to US$850 in an Executive Sprinter for a group.
