An Athens taxi is a licensed yellow cab with a meter, and for most trips in the city it is quick, easy to find and reasonably priced. The one fare every visitor should know is the airport flat rate: according to the City of Athens visitor guide, a taxi from Athens International Airport to the city centre costs €40 from 5am to midnight and €55 from midnight to 5am, including all applicable surcharges. Taxis wait outside Exit 3 of the arrivals level.
For two people with modest luggage, that flat fare is fair value, and we would not argue with it. A pre-booked car makes more sense for families and groups, long-haul arrivals with real luggage, the cruise port and ferry quays at Piraeus, hotels on the Riviera, and days out to Cape Sounion. An Elly8.net transfer from Athens airport to Syntagma Square costs from US$150 per vehicle in a business sedan to US$390 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed in dollars.
How much is a taxi in Athens?
From Athens airport to the city centre, a flat €40 from 5am to midnight and €55 from midnight to 5am, including surcharges, per the City of Athens guide. Elsewhere, taxis charge by the meter, by distance and time. Piraeus to the centre is about €25. A pre-booked Elly8.net car from the airport is from US$150 per vehicle.
The city's airport transport guide adds a detail that catches people out: the flat rate is determined by the time you arrive at your destination, not the time you leave the airport. As simple arithmetic on that rule, if you join the rank at 11:30pm and reach your hotel at ten past midnight, the fare is the €55 night rate.
For every other trip, the city's taxi guide explains that all licensed taxis are fitted with meters and charge per kilometre and per hour, and asks you to make sure the meter is switched on as soon as you set off.
The airport taxi rank, step by step
Athens International Airport is about 34 km (21 mi) from Syntagma, roughly 34 minutes on a clear road by our fact sheet; the city guide puts the drive at 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. After you collect your bags and walk into the arrivals hall, follow the signs to Exit 3, where the taxi rank is. Join the line and take the next cab.
Three habits make the ride smoother. Tell the driver the hotel name and street before you set off, and note that many of the lanes in Plaka are pedestrian, so the cab may stop at the nearest open street. Confirm that the flat fare applies to your destination, since the guide describes it as the fare to the city centre. And if you plan to pay by card, mention it at the start.
The rank is a good option most of the day. It is less attractive after a long-haul night with three large cases, a stroller and tired children, or when a large party needs two cars and would have to split at the kerb.
Meters, cards and paying
All licensed Athens taxis are required to accept credit and debit cards, and the city guide says you will see a sticker on the rear right door window confirming it. It still recommends checking with the driver before setting off, which is good advice in any city. Carrying a few euros in small notes helps for short rides.
Tipping is at your discretion. Elly8.net fares already include standard gratuity, so nothing extra is expected with a pre-booked car; anything more is your choice.
Booking a taxi: rank, app or phone
You have three ways to get a cab in Athens.
At a rank or on the street. Ranks at the airport and the port, and cabs hailed on the street, are the default for short trips.
By app. The city guide lists an app-based yellow taxi service that finds your location and takes cash, card or PayPal, and notes that Uber is available in Athens through its UberTaxi product, which sends a yellow taxi. Our guide to Uber vs taxi vs private car in Athens compares the app with the other options trip by trip.
By phone, for a set time. Radio taxis take bookings for a specific pickup time and date, by phone or online. The city guide lists several, including Kosmos on 18300, Enotita on 18388 and Hellas on 18180, and one service that also offers business class vehicles and city tours.
Taxis at Piraeus
Piraeus is about 10 km southwest of the city centre and 45 km from the airport, according to the city's Piraeus port guide. It says taxis line the port, especially in summer, so finding a cab on arrival is usually easy, but that in high season demand is high and you may have to wait in line; calling a radio taxi or using an app can have one waiting for you. The fare from Piraeus to the city centre is around €25.
By our routing, Syntagma to Piraeus is about 11 km (7 mi) and 13 minutes on a clear road, and the airport to Piraeus about 49 km (30 mi) and 46 minutes. The quays stretch a long way along the waterfront, so the gate matters as much as the port. For a cruise embarkation or an early ferry, see cruise port transfers.
Rafina and the island connections
Not every ferry leaves from Piraeus. Some island services sail from Rafina, on the coast east of the city, which by our routing is about 16 km (10 mi) and 24 minutes from the airport on a clear road. That makes a direct airport to Rafina run a natural plan for travellers flying in and sailing the same day, and it is a trip the meter handles, since the flat fare covers only the city centre. With luggage for a week on the islands, ask the desk for a fixed price in the web booker and give us the ferry operator and departure time, so the car reaches the right quay with a margin.
A short taxi checklist for first-time visitors
Know the rate. From the airport to the centre it is €40 by day or €55 overnight, set by your arrival time. Elsewhere, the meter runs from the start.
Check the meter. Make sure it is switched on as you set off, as the city guide advises.
Mention the card. Card payment is required in licensed taxis, but say so at the start.
Have the address written down. A hotel confirmation on your phone, with the street in Greek if possible, avoids confusion.
Watch the bags. Make sure every case goes into the boot and comes out again at the hotel, and keep valuables with you rather than on the seat.

When a taxi is the right call
Use a taxi for short trips around the centre, for two people from the airport to a central hotel in daytime, and for the run back from Piraeus outside the busiest summer mornings. The fares are regulated, the cars are everywhere, and card payment is required. We would not book a chauffeur for a ten-minute ride from Syntagma to dinner in Kolonaki.
When a pre-booked car wins
The arrival after a long flight. The chauffeur tracks your flight, waits inside the arrivals hall with a name board and handles the bags, so you skip the walk to Exit 3 and the line. Waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, and if a connection is missed, the 24/7 desk moves the pickup. See meet and greet.
Luggage and groups. Our fleet table puts three passengers and two bags in a Business Sedan, six and six in a Business SUV and twelve and twelve in an Executive Sprinter. One vehicle at a fixed fare replaces two or three taxis. See the fleet.
Late nights and early departures. Overnight, the taxi flat rate rises to €55. A pre-booked car is the same fixed price at any hour and is confirmed in advance, which matters for a 5am ferry or a dawn flight to the islands.
The Riviera and Cape Sounion. Trips beyond the centre run on the meter. The five-hour Cape Sounion package costs from US$395 in a business sedan, US$510 in a business SUV and US$785 in an Executive Sprinter, and Visit Greece describes the temple as synonymous with sunsets, which is when you want the car waiting.
Business travel. Athens car service by the hour costs US$85 in a business sedan, US$110 in a business SUV and US$170 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum, and a corporate account puts every ride on one monthly invoice.
A fixed budget. Elly8.net fares are all-in: chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. The price is per vehicle, not per person, and paid by card in US dollars. Read chauffeur vs taxi for the wider comparison.
Event days
On the morning of the Athens Marathon, 8 November 2026, with shorter races on 7 November per the race organisers, roads along the route close, and taxis and cars alike are diverted. If you are flying in or out that weekend, book ahead and let the desk time the pickup around the closures; see event transportation.
Taxi rules differ across Europe
North American travellers moving around Europe often find that each city does taxis its own way. In Athens the airport fare is flat and the meter does the rest. In Monaco, the official service runs on flat fares inside the principality and cannot collect passengers across the French border; our Monaco taxi guide explains it. A pre-booked car is the one constant: a price fixed in dollars before you travel, wherever you land.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from Athens airport to the city centre?
The City of Athens guide gives a flat €40 from 5am to midnight and €55 from midnight to 5am, including all applicable surcharges. The rate is set by the time you arrive at your destination. Taxis wait outside Exit 3 of the arrivals level.
Do Athens taxis take credit cards?
Yes. The city guide says all licensed taxis are required to accept credit and debit cards, shown by a sticker on the rear right door window. It still suggests checking with the driver before setting off, and a few euros in cash are handy for short rides.
Where is the taxi rank at Athens airport?
Outside Exit 3 of the arrivals level. With a pre-booked Elly8.net car, the chauffeur meets you inside the arrivals hall instead, holding a name board, and walks you to the car. Waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, and the fare is fixed from US$150 per vehicle.
How much is a taxi from Piraeus to the centre?
Around €25, according to the city's Piraeus port guide, which also notes that taxis line the port but that in high season you may have to wait in line. A radio taxi or app booking can have a cab waiting. For cruise luggage, a pre-booked car is simpler.
Is a taxi or a private car better for a family?
For a family with luggage, usually a private car. A Business SUV takes six passengers and six bags, from US$195 from the airport to Syntagma, per vehicle, and child seats can be fitted on request. Two adults with light bags will find the €40 flat taxi fare good value.
Can you book an Athens taxi in advance?
Yes. Radio taxi companies take bookings for a set time and date by phone or online, and apps can request a yellow taxi. For a fixed price in dollars with meet and greet, book an Elly8.net car online from US$150 per vehicle.
