A Monaco taxi is run by Taxi Monaco, the principality's official service, and inside Monaco it works on flat fares: €18 when you hail or order one on the spot and €28 when you book ahead, according to the Monaco Tourist Office taxi guide. For a hop from the Casino to the Rock or from a hotel to a restaurant on the harbour, that is hard to beat, and we would not suggest anything else.

The airport is a different question, because Nice Côte d'Azur Airport is in France and the rules change at the border. A French taxi from the Nice airport rank to Monaco is a fixed €95, a Taxi Monaco ride back to the airport is €100, and a pre-booked Elly8.net car from Nice airport to Monte-Carlo costs from US$220 per vehicle in a business sedan to US$575 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed in dollars before you fly. This guide sets out which one suits which trip.

How do taxis work in Monaco?

Taxi Monaco is the principality's official taxi service. Inside Monaco a ride is a flat €18 on demand or €28 booked ahead, plus €1.33 a minute after three minutes of slow traffic. You must be on Monaco territory to be picked up; from Nice airport you take a French taxi at a fixed €95.

The tourist office describes Taxi Monaco as running about 1,000 trips a day with a fleet that passes a hundred vehicles in season, electric taxis included. You can order through its app or by phone around the clock, either for now or for a later time. The vehicles range from saloons for four passengers and two large bags, estates for four passengers and three large bags, people carriers for six and vans, to premium cars.

The rule visitors trip over is geography. Regulations require you to be on Monaco territory for Taxi Monaco to collect you, so a hotel or apartment in Beausoleil or Cap-d'Ail, just across the border in France, does not count. The reverse is also true: a trip from France into Monaco, including the airport run, is made by French taxis. That is why the inbound fare from Nice is set by the Nice side, at €95 from Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, and the outbound fare by the Monaco side, at €100.

The Nice airport taxi page lists the €95 Monaco rate among its fixed fares, notes that the 2026 prices exclude supplements, and places the rank at entrance A3 at both terminals. If you think a driver has overcharged you on a trip from the airport, the same page gives the City of Nice taxi inspection address and asks for the receipt, which is obligatory on any fare of €25 or more.

Where an app ride fits in Monaco

App rides are the least predictable piece. Uber publishes city pages for its Côte d'Azur service, and that list includes Nice, Èze, Beausoleil, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and Menton, but there is no Monaco page. Uber also states that the price of a ride from Nice airport depends on the ride type, the length and duration of the trip, tolls and fees, and current demand. In plain terms, the fare is not known until you open the app, and it rises when everyone wants a car at once.

We would not build an arrival plan around an app ride into or out of Monaco. Check the app on the day if you like the format, and if a car is offered at a price you are happy with, it may serve you well for a trip from the French side. Our separate guide to Uber in Monaco goes through availability, demand pricing and the airport pickup zones in detail.

The train and the bus are better than they look

The coastal railway is the quiet star of this stretch of the Riviera. The tourist office's train page counts about sixty daily services each way between Nice and Monaco, with a journey time of 23 minutes, and no reservation is needed for the regional TER trains. Monaco-Monte-Carlo station is underground, with exits named after the districts they serve: Monte-Carlo at the Pont Sainte-Dévote, the Parvis Sainte-Dévote towards Port Hercule, La Condamine, and Fontvieille and the Rock. Several exits have lifts, and there are taxi stands at the station.

From the airport, the nearest station is Nice Saint-Augustin, under 500 metres away and about a seven-minute walk from Terminal 1 along a pedestrian route. That makes the train a real option for a light traveller arriving at midday. With three large suitcases and a jet-lagged child, the walk, the platform and the escalators at the other end change the picture.

The express bus is the other budget route. Line 80, published by the Région Sud network, runs from the airport to Monaco and on to Menton every 30 minutes, with stops including the station, the tourist office, the Grimaldi Forum and Larvotto. A single ticket is €21.40, and a mini-group ticket for three to nine people travelling together starts at €45. Inside the principality, six regular bus lines run from about 7am to 9pm, with night lines after that.

Then there is the helicopter. The tourist office describes a flight of about seven minutes between Nice airport and the Monaco heliport in Fontvieille, with around fifty round trips a day, and says the booking includes a free minibus shuttle to or from your hotel. It is genuinely the fastest way in, and on a jammed summer afternoon it is often the smartest.

When a Monaco taxi is the right call

Inside Monaco, a taxi is usually the right answer. The principality is small, the roads switch back between levels, and most parking is in around forty paid car parks, largely underground, so a flat €18 ride from the Casino to a restaurant in Fontvieille is quick and fair. If you have two or three short trips in an evening, taxis cost less than holding a car by the hour, and we will say so.

The €10 gap between an on-demand ride and a booked one is worth understanding. Booking ahead at €28 makes sense when the time is fixed, such as a dinner reservation, a performance at the Grimaldi Forum or a lunch on the far side of the harbour, while the €18 on-demand fare is fine when you can wait a few minutes. Keep the Taxi Monaco app on your phone for the evening, and ask for a receipt if you need one for expenses.

From the airport, a taxi suits two adults with modest luggage who land at a reasonable hour and are happy to join the queue at entrance A3. The fare is fixed, the drive is the same road any car takes, and you pay in euros on arrival. If that is your trip, it is a sensible choice.

When a pre-booked private car wins

The calculation changes when the details pile up.

A long-haul arrival with a connection. Most North American travellers reach Nice through Paris, London or Frankfurt. With a pre-booked car the chauffeur tracks the final flight, waits inside arrivals with a name board, and the 24/7 desk moves the pickup if a connection is missed. Waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary.

Luggage and groups. Our fleet table is specific: a Business Sedan takes three passengers and two bags, a Business SUV six passengers and six bags, and an Executive Sprinter twelve passengers and twelve bags. A family of five with luggage fits one Business SUV at US$290, fixed. By simple arithmetic, five bus tickets at €21.40 come to €107, so the bus is cheaper, but the SUV goes door to door with child seats fitted on request.

Event weeks. The Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco runs from 4 to 6 June 2027 and the Monaco Yacht Show from 22 to 25 September 2027. Roads inside the circuit close during sessions, quays around Port Hercule are busy, and every car on the coast is in demand. A booking made weeks ahead, timed around the closures, removes a great deal of uncertainty. See event transportation for how the desk plans those days.

A fixed budget in dollars. Elly8.net fares are all-in: chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. The price is per vehicle, not per person, and does not change with traffic.

Business travel. A corporate account puts every ride on one monthly invoice, with NDAs on request, which matters more in Monaco than in most places.

The departure: €100 taxi or a fixed car

Leaving is where the honest comparison is closest. Taxi Monaco's €100 motorway fare to Nice airport is good value, and for two people with carry-on bags we would not argue. A pre-booked car from US$220 in a business sedan is worth it when the timing matters: an early flight, a family, or a pickup that must be at the door at a set minute rather than ordered on the morning. Booking the airport round trip together costs from US$420 in a business sedan and fixes both legs; see Nice to Monaco airport transfers.

Hourly cars and days out

For a full day of meetings, viewings or a tour, the arithmetic flips again. A Monaco car service by the hour costs US$100 an hour in a business sedan and US$125 in a business SUV, with a 3-hour minimum, and the car waits between stops. The private city highlights tour runs from US$400, and a full-day chauffeur from US$740 covers Èze, Menton or the Italian Riviera. Coming from Nice instead, our guide to the Nice to Monaco transfer compares the train with a private car on that route.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi inside Monaco?

According to the Monaco Tourist Office, Taxi Monaco charges a flat €18 for a ride within the principality when you order or hail it on the spot, and €28 when you book in advance. If traffic slows, €1.33 a minute is added after three minutes. You can order through the Taxi Monaco app or by phone at any hour.

How much is a taxi from Nice airport to Monaco?

The airport lists a fixed fare of €95 from the rank to Monaco, as a 2026 indicative price excluding supplements. The rank is at entrance A3 at both terminals. A pre-booked Elly8.net car costs from US$220 per vehicle in a business sedan, fixed in dollars, with meet and greet inside arrivals.

Can a Monaco taxi collect from Beausoleil or Cap-d'Ail?

No. The tourist office explains that you must be on Monaco territory for Taxi Monaco to collect you, and Beausoleil and Cap-d'Ail are in France. Use a French taxi there, or book a private car, which can collect from either side of the border at a fixed price.

Is the train from Nice to Monaco a good option?

Yes, for light travellers. The tourist office counts about sixty trains a day each way, taking 23 minutes, with no reservation needed. Monaco station is underground, with lifts at several exits. With heavy luggage, children or a late arrival, a door-to-door car is easier.

Is Uber available in Monaco?

Uber publishes pages for nearby towns such as Beausoleil, Èze and Menton but not for Monaco, and says its prices depend on current demand. Check the app on the day rather than relying on it. Our guide to Uber in Monaco covers this in more detail.

Which vehicle fits a family with luggage?

A Business SUV takes six passengers and six bags, from US$290 from Nice airport to Monte-Carlo, per vehicle. A Business Sedan takes three passengers and two bags. Ask for child or booster seats when you book and the partner fits them before pickup.
