There is no single best way to get around Paris, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. A licensed Paris taxi is the best answer for a short spontaneous hop or an airport run with light bags. An app car works when you are comfortable with the app and demand is normal. The metro beats everything for a solo traveller crossing the city at rush hour. A pre-booked chauffeur earns its price when the trip has to go right: a late arrival, a family with car seats, a dinner with a fixed start, a day out of the city.
This guide goes trip by trip rather than mode by mode, because that is how a week in Paris actually works. Each option is described with the rules that are published by French authorities, and Elly8.net fares are quoted exactly as they appear on our Paris car service page: fixed, all-in and per vehicle, from US$135 for an Orly or Le Bourget transfer and US$170 from Charles de Gaulle.
Which is better in Paris: a taxi, Uber or a private car?
For a short ride in the city with light bags, a licensed Paris taxi from a rank or the street is simple and regulated. An app car suits travellers who like upfront in-app prices, though fares move with demand. A pre-booked private car is the better choice for airport arrivals, groups, children, tight schedules and day trips, at a fixed price agreed in advance.
That is the short version. The longer version depends on four things: how many of you there are, how much luggage you carry, how much the timing matters, and whether the price needs to be known before you leave home. Change any one of those and the answer can flip.
How each option actually works in Paris
Licensed taxis. Paris taxis are regulated. The French consumer authority, the DGCCRF, explains on its guide to regulated taxi fares that the price of a normal ride is not known in advance: it is built from a pick-up charge, a distance rate and a time rate for slow traffic, with only a few permitted supplements. The exception is the airport flat fare, the "forfait", which fixes the price between the airports and Paris, with one figure for the Right Bank and another for the Left Bank. Every taxi must carry a card terminal visible to the passenger, so you can pay by card whatever the amount. Licensed taxis are also the only vehicles allowed to pick up passengers who hail them in the street or wait at the ranks at stations and airports.
App cars. Uber and similar apps in Paris dispatch private hire drivers, known in France as VTC. You request the ride in the app, see a price before you confirm, and are directed to a pickup point. The price shown reflects demand at that moment, so the same trip can cost noticeably more on a wet Friday evening or after a concert than on a quiet Tuesday afternoon. We look at that in detail in our guide to Uber in Paris and surge pricing.
Public transport. Île-de-France Mobilités sets the fares. A Metro-Train-RER ticket costs €2.55 for a single trip anywhere in the region except the airports, and the Paris Region to Airports ticket costs €14 per trip to Charles de Gaulle by RER B or to Orly by metro line 14 or Orlyval, with rates applicable from 1 January 2026.
A pre-booked chauffeur. Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Rides in Paris are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network. You choose the vehicle, the fare is set before you travel, and your card is charged in US dollars.
| Option | How the price works | Booking | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Licensed Paris taxi | Meter in town; regulated flat fare to and from the airports | Rank, street hail or phone | Short hops, spontaneous trips, light bags |
| App car (VTC) | Price shown in the app, moves with demand | App only, pickup point | App users, normal demand, small groups |
| Metro, RER, bus | €2.55 single in the region; €14 to the airports | Ticket on Navigo Easy or phone | Solo travellers, rush hour, light bags |
| Elly8.net chauffeur | Fixed all-in fare per vehicle, in US$ | Online in advance, 24/7 desk | Arrivals, families, groups, schedules, day trips |
Trip 1: landing at Charles de Gaulle or Orly
This is the trip where the differences are sharpest. After an overnight flight, you clear passport control, collect bags and walk out into a terminal that may be unfamiliar.
A taxi from the official rank is a reasonable choice. The flat fare removes the meter worry, and a taxi is legally the only vehicle that can take you from the rank. The weakness is the queue after a wave of morning transatlantic arrivals, and a larger party should know that the DGCCRF lists a passenger supplement from the fifth person.
An app car means walking to the pickup point the app gives you and waiting for the assigned car. It works, but at peak arrival times you are competing with everyone else off the same flights.
The RER B is the budget answer at €14 per person, and our guide to getting from CDG into Paris walks through it step by step, including the stations with stairs.
A pre-booked chauffeur meets you inside arrivals with a name board, tracks the flight, and waiting is complimentary after a tracked landing. From CDG to the 8th arrondissement, a business sedan costs from US$170, a business SUV US$225 and an Executive Sprinter US$445. From Orly or Le Bourget the range starts at US$135. The same fixed fares apply on the way back to the airport. Book it as an airport transfer, with the details of the arrivals meeting on meet and greet.
Verdict. One person with a carry-on, daytime: train or taxi. Two or more people with checked bags, a late or very early flight, children, or a meeting the same morning: a pre-booked car.
Trip 2: short hops inside the city
From your hotel near the Opéra to a lunch in the Marais, or from Saint-Germain to the Eiffel Tower, the trips are short and the choice is easy. The metro is fast and cheap, and for a couple a taxi flagged in the street or taken from a rank is usually the quickest door-to-door option. An app car is fine too.
A private car is rarely the right tool for a single 15-minute hop. Where it changes is when the hops add up: four or five stops in an afternoon, shopping bags piling up, a parent with a stroller. Then an hourly booking keeps one car and one chauffeur with you between stops, which removes the cycle of hailing and waiting. Elly8.net's hourly chauffeur rate in Paris is US$90 an hour in a business sedan, US$115 in a business SUV and US$180 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum.
Verdict. Metro or taxi for one hop; an hourly car when you have a run of stops or a group.
Trip 3: dinner, the opera or a show
Evening trips have a fixed start time. Arriving late to a restaurant reservation is annoying; arriving late to the opera means waiting for the interval. On the way there a taxi or an app car is usually fine. The way home is the harder part, when a performance or a match lets out and thousands of people reach for their phones at the same time. That is when app prices tend to rise and taxi ranks empty.
The evening out and event night package keeps a chauffeur for the evening, from US$450 in a business sedan to US$900 in a Sprinter for a group, and the car is waiting at the door when you come out. For concerts at the Accor Arena or matches at the Stade de France, see concert transportation and sports event transportation. Roland-Garros runs from 17 May to 6 June 2027, according to the official tournament site, and the streets around Porte d'Auteuil are busy every afternoon of it.
Verdict. Taxi or app on the way out; a held car for the way back when a crowd leaves at the same moment.
Trip 4: a day out of Paris
Versailles, Giverny, Champagne and Normandy are all popular days out, and here the taxi and the app are the wrong tools. Neither is designed to wait for you for five hours. The train works well for some of these trips; Versailles in particular is cheap and easy by RER, and our Versailles car vs train comparison sets out when that is the smarter choice.
A full-day chauffeur costs from US$665 in a business sedan to US$1,325 in a Sprinter, and the signature 10-hour Champagne day to Reims and Épernay costs from US$830. Our guide to a Paris day trip with a private driver compares the main destinations by distance and drive time.
Verdict. Train for an easy single-site trip; a chauffeur for multi-stop days, groups, or anywhere the station is far from the sight.
Trip 5: business days and roadshows
A business traveller with meetings in the 8th, La Défense and the 9th has a different problem: the car must be outside when the meeting ends, not seven minutes away. A held car with one chauffeur through the day solves that, and the receipts are consistent. The corporate roadshow day package costs from US$810 in a business sedan. Companies can open a corporate account with monthly invoicing and NDAs on request, and our corporate car service page covers the details.
Price certainty: what is fixed and what is not
The most practical difference between the options is when you learn the price.
- Taxi in town: you learn it at the end, from the meter. Fair and regulated, but not known in advance.
- Taxi to or from the airport: fixed by the flat fare, posted at the rank, in euros.
- App car: shown before you confirm, but set at that moment by demand.
- Elly8.net: fixed when you book, often weeks ahead, in US dollars, per vehicle, including the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Tolls, parking and extra waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost.
For a traveller with a corporate budget or a family holiday set in dollars, that last point is often the deciding one. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 10% applies at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, as set out in the cancellation policy.
Luggage, seats and children
A taxi or a standard app car is a sedan. Elly8.net's fleet table gives realistic capacities by class: a Business Sedan or First Class Sedan takes up to three passengers and two large bags, a Business SUV or First Class SUV takes up to six passengers and six bags, and an Executive Sprinter takes up to twelve passengers and twelve bags. For a family of four with transatlantic cases, the SUV is the honest answer. Child seats are available on request when you book; give the children's ages and they are fitted before pickup.
When to choose which: a quick checklist
- Choose the metro for solo trips across the city, especially at rush hour.
- Choose a taxi for a short spontaneous ride, a late hop back to the hotel, or an airport run with light bags when you do not mind the rank.
- Choose an app car when demand is normal and you are comfortable meeting at a pickup point.
- Choose a pre-booked chauffeur for arrivals and departures with bags, groups, children, evenings with a fixed start, days out of the city and business days.
For the wider picture beyond Paris, our comparisons of chauffeur vs taxi and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft apply the same thinking in every city we serve.
Frequently asked questions
Are Paris taxis expensive?
Within the city, Paris taxis run on a regulated meter: a pick-up charge, a distance rate and a time rate in slow traffic, with only a few permitted supplements. To and from the airports they charge a regulated flat fare, one for the Right Bank and one for the Left Bank, posted at the rank. Every taxi must accept card payment.
Can I hail an Uber in the street in Paris?
No. App cars are requested through the app and meet you at a pickup point. Only licensed taxis may be hailed in the street or take passengers waiting at the ranks at stations and airports. If you need a car at a fixed time, booking ahead removes the wait.
Is a private car cheaper than a taxi from CDG?
For one person travelling light, the RER B at €14 or the taxi flat fare will normally cost less. For a family or group the gap narrows, because Elly8.net prices are per vehicle: a Business SUV from CDG costs from US$225 for up to six passengers and six bags, booked and fixed in advance.
Do Elly8.net prices change with demand?
No. The fare is fixed when you book and does not rise for rain, rush hour or events. It includes the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost.
What is the best option for a family with car seats?
A pre-booked Business SUV with child seats requested at booking. Give the ages of the children and the partner fits the seats before pickup. The SUV carries up to six passengers and six bags, which covers a family's transatlantic luggage and a stroller.
Can I keep the same car for a whole day in Paris?
Yes. Book by the hour from US$90 in a business sedan with a 3-hour minimum, or a full-day chauffeur from US$665. The chauffeur waits between stops, so there is no hailing or app requests between meetings, museums and dinner. Prices are per vehicle.
