A Halifax taxi is usually the quickest way to cover a short distance on the peninsula, and from the airport the licensed cars charge a published zone fare. Uber and Lyft operate in the city too, at prices their apps set. Halifax Transit's buses and harbour ferries are the cheapest way around. A pre-booked private car costs more than all of them for a short hop, and less hassle than any of them for an airport run with a family, a group night out or a day of meetings.
The useful question is not which is best but which fits the trip in front of you. This guide from the Elly8.net reservations desk explains how each option is priced, using the municipality's and the airport's own published figures, and then goes trip by trip. Taxi, transit and airport fares are in Canadian dollars; Elly8.net prices are in US dollars.
How much is a taxi in Halifax?
Halifax taxi rates are set by each taxi company and approved by the municipality. The city lists an initial charge of C$4.70, and fares can be agreed before you leave or metered on request. From the airport, licensed cars charge a published zone fare of C$68.00 including HST to the Halifax peninsula.
The municipality explains the rules on its taking a taxi or limousine page. Beyond the initial charge, it says fares can be negotiated between the operator and passenger before departure, or the passenger can ask for the meter; set rates apply to trips to and from the airport, and there are separate rates for cruise ship passengers. Fares can be paid by debit, credit or cash.
The underlying rules sit in Administrative Order 39, the taxi and limousine regulation. It says taxi rates are set by the broker and approved by the Licensing Authority, limousine rates are set by the owner and approved the same way, and vehicles approved by the airport authority or the port authority may charge the rates those authorities set. It also sets a default schedule for any broker that has not filed its own.
The default schedule is a useful benchmark for how a Halifax meter is built, even though each company may file its own approved rates. Administrative Order 39 sets it, inclusive of HST, at C$6.40 for the first 142.8 metres, C$0.26 for each further 142.8 metres, a waiting charge of C$0.28 per 30 seconds when the car is stopped or moving below 18.5 km/h, and C$0.80 for each additional passenger over the age of 12. The same order sets a default limousine rate of C$83.90 an hour for owners who have not filed a rate. In other words, a Halifax taxi meter charges for distance, for slow traffic and for extra adults, which is why the same trip can cost noticeably more at rush hour.

The airport: a published zone fare
Halifax Stanfield publishes the fares its licensed car services charge from the airport. Its local car service fare sheet lists C$68.00 including HST to the Halifax peninsula zone that includes downtown, C$61.00 or C$66.00 to Dartmouth zones and C$50.00 to C$55.00 to Bedford. The airport's taxis and limos page adds a temporary C$4.00 per-trip increase on these local fares, in effect since June 1, 2022.
That is a fair, transparent price for one or two travellers, and we say so plainly. Our separate guide to the Halifax airport limo walks through the arrivals hall and luggage in detail.
Uber and Lyft in Halifax
Uber and Lyft operate in Halifax as licensed Transportation Network Companies. Administrative Order 39 is explicit about their prices: TNC rates are set by the TNC and do not require approval by, or disclosure to, the municipality. In practice that means the price you see in the app depends on demand, time and traffic when you request it, and there is no published fare to quote.
At the airport, Halifax Stanfield's rideshare page says Uber and Lyft pick up in a designated area on the ground transportation curb outside Arrivals: exit near the Ground Transportation booth, turn right and follow the signs. Rideshare is a sensible choice for a light traveller who is comfortable waiting for a match, and less so when several flights land at once or the weather turns. Halifax Transit: buses and harbour ferries
Halifax Transit's fares page lists a conventional bus and ferry fare of C$3 for an adult, C$2.25 for seniors and youth, with children 12 and under free, and a one-day pass at C$7.50. The Regional Express routes, including the 320 to the airport, are C$4.75 for an adult. The harbour ferries between Halifax and Dartmouth are part of the same fare system, and on a fine day the crossing is one of the best views of the city.
For one person with a light bag and time to spare, transit is the cheapest way to get almost anywhere in the core. It is less practical with heavy luggage, small children, or a schedule built around a meeting.
The private car: fixed fares and the Elly8.net price list

Which to use, trip by trip
Short hops downtown. The Halifax peninsula is compact and hilly, with most hotels, restaurants and offices close together. For a five-minute ride, a taxi or a walk wins every time. We would not sell you a car for this.
The airport, travelling light. The Route 320 at C$4.75 or the zone fare at C$68.00 plus the temporary C$4.00 are hard to beat for one or two people with ordinary bags arriving in the daytime.
The airport, with a family, a group or a late flight. This is where a pre-booked car is worth it. The chauffeur is in arrivals with a name board, child seats are already fitted, and the SUV or Sprinter takes everyone and the luggage in one vehicle. Our airport transfers page explains how flight tracking and waiting work.
Across the harbour. For one person going to a single address, the Halifax to Dartmouth ferry is fast and cheap. For a day that moves between offices in downtown Halifax, Burnside and Bayers Lake, an hourly chauffeur keeps one car and one driver with you and handles the parking.
Cruise days. Vehicles approved by the port authority may charge rates it sets, and a taxi can agree a fare before departure. A private car booked to the ship's arrival suits passengers who want a fixed price and a guaranteed ride back before all-aboard; our guide to Halifax to Peggy's Cove by private car covers the most popular trip, and cruise port transfers the pickup.
Nights out and events. For two people, a taxi or rideshare is the obvious choice. For six or more, the evening out package in an Executive Sprinter keeps the group together and the ride home settled before the night begins. See event transportation.
Business travel. When the cost has to be fixed and documented before the trip, or a traveller needs NDAs and monthly invoicing, a corporate account is the cleaner solution. Our general comparisons of chauffeur vs taxi and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft set out the same trade-offs across all our cities.
Things to check, whatever you choose
- Agree or meter. In a taxi, decide at the start whether the fare is agreed or metered, as the municipality allows both.
- Ask for a receipt. The municipality's code of conduct gives taxi passengers the right to a receipt showing the fare, date, time, company and roof light number.
- Child seats. If you travel with young children, confirm seats before you book anything; with Elly8.net they are on request at booking.
- Know the rules on board. The municipality asks passengers to refrain from smoking, drinking or eating in taxis and limousines, and our chauffeurs follow local rules.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from Halifax airport to downtown?
Halifax Stanfield's published zone fare for licensed car services is C$68.00 including HST to the Halifax peninsula, which covers downtown, and the airport lists a temporary C$4.00 per-trip increase on local fares. An Elly8.net Business Sedan for the same trip is US$165, fixed, with the chauffeur waiting inside arrivals.
Is Uber available in Halifax?
Yes. Uber and Lyft operate as licensed Transportation Network Companies, and the airport has a designated rideshare pickup area on the ground transportation curb outside Arrivals. Their prices are set by the companies, not approved by the municipality, so they vary with demand and cannot be quoted in advance.
Can you negotiate a taxi fare in Halifax?
Yes. The municipality says fares can be negotiated between the driver and passenger before departure, or the passenger can ask for the meter to be used. Airport trips have set rates, and cruise passengers have separate rates. Agree the method at the start of the trip.
Is the Halifax bus or ferry a good option for visitors?
For one person travelling light, yes. Halifax Transit lists an adult bus and ferry fare of C$3, a day pass at C$7.50 and C$4.75 on the Regional Express 320 to the airport. With heavy bags, young children or a tight schedule, a taxi or a booked car is easier.
When is a private car better than a taxi in Halifax?
For late or delayed flights, families who need child seats, groups who would need two taxis, a cruise day with a fixed return time, and business travel that needs a fixed price and an invoice. For a short hop downtown, a taxi or a walk is the better choice.
What is the cancellation policy for Elly8.net bookings?
Free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go back to the original card. The same terms apply to every vehicle and every Elly8.net city.
