Halifax to Peggy's Cove is about 45 km (28 mi) southwest along the coast, roughly 50 minutes on a clear road from downtown Halifax by Route 333, the Prospect Road. From Halifax Stanfield airport (YHZ) it is about 69 km (43 mi), a little over an hour. The village itself is small: a fishing harbour, a few houses, the lighthouse on bare granite, and a lot of sky.
Most visitors go by tour coach, rental car or private car, and the right choice depends on how long you want to stay and who is coming. The signature Elly8.net Halifax package is a five-hour Peggy's Cove day with a chauffeur who drives you out, waits while you explore and brings you back, priced from US$510 in a Business Sedan. This guide from the Elly8.net desk covers the route, the stops, the alternatives and the timing.

The route: out by Prospect Road, back along St. Margaret's Bay
The direct way leaves downtown on Quinpool Road and St. Margaret's Bay Road to the edge of the city, then follows Route 333, the Prospect Road, for about 36 km southwest toward the coast. It passes through small communities and lakes before the land opens out into the granite barrens that announce Peggy's Cove.
Route 333 does not end at the village. It carries on as the Peggy's Cove Road, north around the shore of St. Margaret's Bay, and meets Highway 103 near Upper Tantallon for a fast run back to the city. Doing the trip as a loop, out by Prospect Road and back along the bay, costs only a little more time and shows you two quite different coasts. Tell the desk if you want it, and the chauffeur plans the timing around it.
Weather is the variable. Fog rolls in off the Atlantic quickly in summer, and in winter the coast road can be icy. The fare is fixed, so if the drive takes longer, your price does not change.
What to see at Peggy's Cove
The lighthouse and the village. The Peggy's Cove region's visitor guide describes the historic lighthouse and fishing village as the heart of the area. The village is small and easy to explore on foot, and the chauffeur drops you as close to it as the road allows.
The rocks, with care. The granite shelf around the lighthouse is what everyone photographs. Stay on the pale, dry rock and well back from the dark, wet rock near the water, where waves can surge without warning. This is not a place to scramble down for a closer picture.
The Fishermen's Monument. The region's commemorative sites page describes William deGarthe's Fishermen's Monument, carved into a natural granite outcrop on the deGarthe property in the village, as a tribute to fishers and their families.
The Swissair Flight 111 memorials. The same page notes two memorials to those who died when Swissair Flight 111 crashed near the entrance to St. Margaret's Bay in September 1998: one within the Peggy's Cove Preservation Area and one at Bayswater on the Aspotogan Peninsula. Many visitors ask to stop at the memorial near Peggy's Cove on the way in or out, and it fits easily into the five-hour day.
The Preservation Area. As you approach, the visitor guide points out the undeveloped barrens of the Peggy's Cove Preservation Area, a protected landscape of granite and low vegetation that looks very different from the wooded coast either side.
The five-hour Peggy's Cove day
The Peggy's Cove package on the Halifax price list is priced per vehicle, all-in: US$510 in a Business Sedan, US$645 in a Business SUV, US$760 in a First Class SUV, US$830 in a First Class Sedan and US$1,015 in an Executive Sprinter. It includes the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity.
Five hours is enough for a relaxed visit. Roughly 50 minutes out and 50 minutes back leaves about three hours on the ground: time for the lighthouse and rocks, a walk through the village, something to eat, and a stop at the memorial. Families with children and photographers chasing light tend to use every minute of it.
Rides in Halifax are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer, and child seats are available on request.
Shorter visits, photographs and special occasions
If you only want an hour at the lighthouse, the hourly chauffeur rate on the Halifax price list, from US$110 in a Business Sedan with a 3-hour minimum, covers a quick out-and-back. Three hours at that rate comes to US$330, as simple arithmetic; the five-hour package costs more but gives you a far less hurried visit.
Peggy's Cove is also a favourite backdrop for wedding photographs and proposals. Couples often book a First Class Sedan for themselves with an Executive Sprinter for the wedding party, timed for the light and the tide of visitors; see wedding limousine and guest shuttles and, for larger groups, our guide to limo bus options in Halifax. Leave extra time for fog, and agree a backup plan with the photographer.
Extending the day: Mahone Bay and Lunenburg
If you want more of the South Shore, a full-day chauffeur, from US$810 in a Business Sedan and US$1,035 in a Business SUV to US$1,620 in an Executive Sprinter, adds Mahone Bay and Lunenburg. Lunenburg is about 100 km (62 mi) from Peggy's Cove by Route 333 and Highway 103, and Mahone Bay sits about 12 km before it. Old Town Lunenburg is on Parks Canada's list of World Heritage Sites in Canada.
A typical full day runs Halifax to Peggy's Cove in the morning, along St. Margaret's Bay and Highway 103 to Mahone Bay for lunch, on to Lunenburg for the afternoon, and back to Halifax on Highway 103, about 100 km. It is a long, rewarding day, and better in the long light of summer than on a short winter afternoon. For other chauffeured days around the city, see our guide to Halifax tours with a chauffeur.
Other ways to get to Peggy's Cove
| Option | Cost basis | Time at Peggy's Cove | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tour coach or cruise excursion | per seat, set by the operator | fixed by the tour | solo travellers and couples on a budget |
| Rental car | daily rate, fuel, parking | as long as you like | independent travellers with a car anyway |
| Taxi, fare agreed before departure | agreed with the driver, or metered | as agreed | short visits from the city |
| Airport car service from YHZ | C$127.00 incl. HST zone fare, one way | drop-off only | travellers heading straight to a coast stay |
| Elly8.net five-hour day | from US$510 per vehicle, all-in | about three hours, chauffeur waits | families, groups, cruise passengers, special occasions |
Tour coaches are the cheapest way for one or two people, and they know the route. You keep to their schedule and their stops.
A rental car gives you complete freedom and suits a longer trip down the South Shore. You do the driving and the parking yourself on the village's busiest days. See chauffeur vs renting a car for the trade-offs.
A taxi is possible. The municipality's taking a taxi or limousine page says fares can be negotiated before departure or metered at the passenger's request. Agree the fare, and the return, before you leave.
From the airport, Halifax Stanfield's car service fare sheet lists C$127.00 including HST to Peggy's Cove, and the airport currently adds a temporary C$4.00 per trip to local fares. That is a one-way drop. With Elly8.net, a YHZ to Peggy's Cove trip, or an airport pickup with a stop at the cove on the way into the city, is priced in the web booker.
When to go, and cruise days
Like most famous viewpoints, the village can be busiest around the middle of the day in summer and autumn, especially when cruise ships are in port and coach excursions arrive together. An early start, or an afternoon visit timed for the evening light, gives you a quieter village. In fog, the lighthouse can disappear entirely, so a flexible start time helps.
Winter is a different trip. The village is quiet, the sea can be spectacular in a storm swell, and the light is low and beautiful, but daylight is short and the granite can be icy. A late-morning start gives the coast road time to clear after overnight snow, and the chauffeur keeps the car close by so you can warm up between walks.
Cruise passengers have the tightest timing of anyone. Give the desk the ship name and arrival date, and the chauffeur meets you at the cruise terminal at the Seaport at the time you set, with the return planned to leave a comfortable margin before all-aboard. See cruise port transfers and the general private city tours page. If you are flying in first, the Halifax airport limo guide covers the arrival.
