A Las Vegas to Grand Canyon tour by private car starts with one decision: which rim. Grand Canyon West, run by the Hualapai Tribe and home of the glass Skywalk, is about 123 miles (198 km) from the Strip, which makes a full day out and back. The South Rim, inside Grand Canyon National Park, is about 275 miles (442 km) away, well over five hours each way, which is why most people treat it as an overnight trip or a one-way drive onward into Arizona.
With Elly8.net, a chauffeured Grand Canyon day from Las Vegas is booked by the hour, from US$95 an hour in a Business Sedan to US$120 in a Business SUV and US$190 in an Executive Sprinter for up to twelve, with the total shown at checkout before you pay. The chauffeur drives, waits at each stop and brings you back to your hotel. Below are the routes, the timings, the fees at the other end and an honest look at the alternatives.
How long is the drive from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon?
Grand Canyon West is about 123 miles (198 km) from the Strip; it describes itself as about a two-hour drive, and with traffic and a rest stop we plan roughly 2.5 to 3 hours each way. The South Rim is about 275 miles (442 km), over five hours each way on a clear road, so it suits an overnight stay.
The distances are routed road distances from the centre of the Strip. The West Rim figure is the main reason it is the classic Las Vegas day trip: you can leave after breakfast, spend three hours at the canyon and be back for dinner. The South Rim is the bigger, more famous view, but a same-day return means ten or eleven hours in a car.
Option 1: Grand Canyon West, the Las Vegas day trip
Grand Canyon West is on the Hualapai Reservation at 5001 E. Diamond Bar Road, Meadview, Arizona, and is operated by the Hualapai Tribe. It is not part of the national park, and it has its own ticketing. Its best-known feature is the Skywalk, a 70-foot glass bridge suspended 4,000 feet above the canyon floor, and the site also has viewpoints such as Eagle Point and Guano Point, a hop-on hop-off shuttle between them, and helicopter, pontoon and rafting options.
Opening hours. Grand Canyon West opens every day of the year, including holidays, with doors at 8 a.m., last entry tickets at 4:30 p.m. and closing at 6 p.m.; in summer, last entry moves to 5:30 p.m. and closing to 7 p.m. Hours are on Arizona time.
The time zone trap. Arizona does not observe daylight saving time. Grand Canyon West's own FAQ notes that from March 8 to November 1, 2026 its clock matches Las Vegas, and from November 2, 2026 to March 13, 2027 it runs on Mountain Standard Time, one hour ahead of Las Vegas. On a winter trip, a 4:30 p.m. last entry there is 3:30 p.m. on your phone in Las Vegas. Plan the departure from the Strip with that in mind.
Tickets. An All-Access Pass is required for every visitor, and prices vary by date. The operator's FAQ says reservations are not required if you drive yourself for the day, but are required for overnight stays, rafting and tours that include transportation, and it recommends booking helicopter and airplane tours in advance. Tickets can be cancelled without penalty up to 48 hours before the visit date. Buy them before the day so the chauffeur is not waiting while you queue.
How long to stay. The operator recommends at least three hours, or two if you are in a hurry.

A sample West Rim day with a chauffeur
- 7:30 a.m. Pickup at your Strip hotel's porte cochere. The chauffeur confirms the exact spot the day before.
- 8:15 a.m. South-east past Henderson and Boulder City on US-93, crossing into Arizona on the bridge downstream of Hoover Dam.
- Around 10:30 a.m. After a rest stop, the turn north and the final run to Grand Canyon West. Add an hour to the clock in winter.
- 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. At the canyon: Skywalk, the viewpoints by shuttle, lunch. The chauffeur waits at the visitor area.
- 3 p.m. Depart, with an optional stop at Hoover Dam on the way back if the visitor centre is still open.
- 6 p.m. Back on the Strip.
That is about ten and a half hours door to door, longer than the 8-hour full-day chauffeur package, so the West Rim day is booked as an hourly chauffeur. The checkout lets you choose up to twelve hours, and the total is shown before you pay. If you want a different timetable, enter it in the web booker for a fixed quote.
Adding Hoover Dam
Hoover Dam sits right beside the West Rim route, which makes it the natural extra stop. The Bureau of Reclamation's visitor services page lists the visitor centre open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, with doors closing at 4:15 p.m.; the parking garage on the Nevada side charges US$10 per vehicle, and the self-guided visitor centre tour is US$15 per person. The same page carried a notice in August 2026 that guided dam tours were unavailable because of elevator repairs, while the power plant and exhibit tours ran normally, so check before you go.
If Hoover Dam is the main goal rather than an extra, the Elly8.net Hoover Dam and Lake Mead day trip is a 6-hour package from US$525 in a Business Sedan to US$1,050 in an Executive Sprinter; see the Las Vegas car service page.
Option 2: the South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park
The South Rim is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and includes Grand Canyon Village and Desert View. It is the view most people picture, and it is much further from Las Vegas: about 275 miles (442 km) by road, over five hours each way before stops.
A same-day return is possible but long, and most of the day is spent driving. Better shapes for the trip are:
- An overnight: drive out, stay at or near the park, see sunset and sunrise, and drive back the next day. The car can be booked for both days.
- A one-way transfer onward: Las Vegas to the South Rim, then on to Sedona and Phoenix, which is a natural Arizona itinerary. Sedona is about 114 miles (183 km) south of Grand Canyon Village. Our guide to Phoenix to Sedona by private car covers the Sedona end, and the Phoenix car service page lists the Sky Harbor fares for the flight home.
Long one-way routes like these are priced through our city to city car service, quoted in the web booker for your exact route.
Park fees. The National Park Service fees page lists a US$35 private vehicle pass, but notes that commercial groups are not eligible for the vehicle permit, so entry in a chauffeured vehicle is charged differently. It also states that non-US residents aged 16 and over pay an additional US$100 per person unless admitted with an annual or America the Beautiful pass, and that the park does not accept cash. Check the current fees before you travel.

What a private car day costs
Elly8.net prices in Las Vegas are per vehicle, fixed and all-in, with taxes and the standard gratuity included. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost; on a canyon day that means things like the Hoover Dam garage fee if you stop. Park and attraction tickets are separate and paid to the operators.
- By the hour: US$95 an hour in a Business Sedan, US$120 in a Business SUV, US$145 in a First Class SUV, US$155 in a First Class Sedan and US$190 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum and up to twelve hours at checkout.
- Full-day chauffeur, 8 hours: from US$700 in a Business Sedan to US$1,400 in an Executive Sprinter; suits a shorter canyon-and-dam plan.
- Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, 6 hours: from US$525 to US$1,050.
- Overnight or one-way routes: quoted in the web booker.
Because the price is per vehicle, groups bring the per-person cost down sharply. An Executive Sprinter carries up to twelve with luggage; see Sprinter van with driver for the class. Our guide to Phoenix limo rental prices explains how hourly bookings, packages and extras work, and the same rules apply in Las Vegas.
Private car vs bus tour vs helicopter vs self-drive
Coach tours are the budget choice for one or two people. You follow a fixed schedule with a busload of other visitors, and the pickup is often early. For a solo traveller on a budget, that is a fair trade.
Helicopter and airplane tours turn a day into a few hours and give a view no road can match. They cost more per person and depend on weather, and Grand Canyon West sells its own helicopter and pontoon packages on site.
Driving yourself in a rental car is the cheapest option for a family that enjoys driving, and nothing stops you. The downsides are five or more hours at the wheel on the West Rim day, ten or more on a South Rim day, the time zone change, and a tired drive back into Las Vegas traffic in the evening. Our chauffeur vs car rental comparison sets out the trade-off.
A private chauffeur is the best fit for families with children (child seats are available on request), groups of four to twelve who want to stay together, visitors who want to choose their own timetable and stops, and anyone who would rather look at the desert than the road. The private city tours page explains how chauffeured sightseeing days work across Elly8.net cities.
Practical tips for a canyon day
- Leave early. The West Rim's last entry is mid-afternoon, and an hour vanishes in winter because of the time change.
- Carry water and sun protection. The desert is hot for much of the year, and viewpoints are exposed.
- Buy attraction tickets in advance, and keep the confirmation on your phone.
- Tell the desk your group size and luggage so the right vehicle comes. A Business SUV seats six; a Sprinter, twelve.
- Food and drink in the car follow the chauffeur's local rules, including Nevada and Arizona rules on alcohol in the vehicle.

Frequently asked questions
Can you do the Grand Canyon in a day from Las Vegas?
Yes, Grand Canyon West is a realistic day: about 123 miles (198 km) each way, with roughly three hours at the canyon. Plan on about ten to eleven hours door to door. The South Rim is possible in a very long day, but at over five hours each way, an overnight is far more enjoyable.
How much is a private car from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon?
A chauffeured day is booked by the hour on the Las Vegas price list: from US$95 an hour in a Business Sedan, US$120 in a Business SUV and US$190 in an Executive Sprinter, with taxes and standard gratuity included and the total shown at checkout. Overnight and one-way routes are quoted in the web booker.
Which rim has the Skywalk?
The Skywalk is at Grand Canyon West, on the Hualapai Reservation, not in the national park. It is a 70-foot glass bridge 4,000 feet above the canyon floor, and entry is included in the All-Access Pass that every Grand Canyon West visitor needs.
Is Grand Canyon West in a different time zone from Las Vegas?
Part of the year. Arizona does not observe daylight saving time, so from November 2, 2026 to March 13, 2027 Grand Canyon West runs one hour ahead of Las Vegas. From March to early November the clocks match. Its opening hours are always given in Arizona time.
Can we stop at Hoover Dam on the way?
Yes. Hoover Dam is beside the US-93 route to Grand Canyon West. The visitor centre is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas, and the Nevada-side garage costs US$10 per vehicle. Tell us when you book so the stop is built into the timetable.
