Kelowna to Big White is a drive of 56 km (35 mi) south-east of the city: 32 km (20 mi) on Highway 33, then 24 km (15 mi) up Big White Road to the village, according to the resort's maps and directions page, which puts it at less than an hour. Tourism Kelowna puts the resort about 55 minutes from downtown. In winter the second half of that drive is a mountain road, and that is what decides how most visitors get there.
There are three good ways up: the resort's own airport and ski shuttles, driving yourself in a rental or your own car, and a private car with a chauffeur. Each has a traveller it suits. This guide compares them honestly, with the rules for driving the road in winter and the numbers for a private car from the Elly8.net desk.
What is the best way to get from Kelowna to Big White?
For a solo skier or a couple staying in the village, Big White's shared shuttle is usually the cheapest. For families with ski bags and child seats, groups of six or more, or a day trip with the car waiting, a private car wins. Driving yourself suits confident winter drivers with proper tires, chains and a full tank.
The 2026-27 winter season at Big White opens on November 26, 2026, according to the resort's opening weekend listing. From then until spring, the road, the weather and the luggage are the three things to plan around.

Option 1: the Big White shuttle
Big White's shuttle and transportation page says the resort provides regular shuttle service from Kelowna International Airport (YLW), booked and paid online through its booking platform, with your flight and accommodation information ready. It also lists a weekend ski shuttle from Kelowna and West Kelowna that runs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, for people staying in the city and skiing for the day. The page does not publish fares or timetables, so check them when you book.
Who it suits. One or two travellers staying at a village property, landing on a day and at a time that fits the schedule, with ordinary ski luggage. For them, a shared seat is the economical way up, and there is no reason to pay for a car.
Where it struggles. Late or delayed flights, families who need child seats, groups whose combined seats cost more than one vehicle, and anyone heading to a private chalet rather than a central drop-off. A shared shuttle also runs on its timetable for the return, which may not match a checkout time or a flight.
Option 2: driving yourself
Driving gives you the most freedom on the mountain and the most responsibility on the road. Big White sets out what that means in winter on its directions page:
- Chains. Carry them if winter conditions are possible and be ready to install them. Where a sign reads "Winter Tires or Chains Are Required Beyond This Point", you must have chains or proper winter tread tires to continue, and going past it without them may result in a fine. Where signs require chains on vehicles over a certain weight, carrying them is not enough; they must be on.
- Tires. Transport Canada recommends winter tires marked with the peaked mountain and snowflake symbol.
- Fuel. There are no fuel stations at the resort, so fill up in Kelowna for the round trip.
- Parking. Parking on village roads is prohibited, with tickets and towing at any time; use the designated lots.
- Conditions. Check DriveBC before you leave, slow down, and leave about three times your normal following distance on snow and ice.
The province's own rules apply too. BC requires winter tires or chains on signed routes from October 1 to April 30, as set out on the BC winter tire page. If you are renting at YLW, confirm the car's tires and ask about chains before you leave the counter.
Who it suits. Experienced winter drivers on a longer stay who want to ski, then drive into Kelowna for dinner or a winery on a day off. Where it struggles. A first-time visitor arriving at night after a long flight, a family with a car full of gear, or a group that would rather not nominate a driver for the descent after an après-ski evening.
Option 3: a private car with a chauffeur
A private car from Elly8.net is booked through the web booker for YLW or any Kelowna address to your Big White hotel, condo or chalet. Big White transfers are not on the fixed price list, so the booker quotes the trip before you pay, per vehicle and all-in. For a day on the mountain with the car waiting, the full-day chauffeur rate applies: US$810 in a Business Sedan, US$1,035 in a Business SUV, US$1,215 in a First Class SUV and US$1,620 in an Executive Sprinter.
| Way up | Cost basis | Timing | Luggage and gear | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Big White airport shuttle | Per person, booked online with Big White | Scheduled service from YLW | Shared space | Solo travellers and couples staying in the village |
| Weekend ski shuttle | Per person | Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays | Shared space | Day skiers staying in Kelowna or West Kelowna |
| Drive yourself | Rental or own car, fuel, chains | Your schedule | Your trunk | Confident winter drivers on longer stays |
| Elly8.net private transfer | Quoted per vehicle in the web booker | Leaves when you land or when you are ready | Up to 12 bags in an Executive Sprinter | Families, groups, chalets, late flights |
| Elly8.net full-day chauffeur | From US$810 per vehicle | A full day with the car | As above | Day trips from Kelowna with the car waiting |
Who it suits. Families, ski groups, wedding parties heading up for a winter celebration, corporate groups on a retreat, and anyone arriving late. The chauffeur tracks the flight, waits inside arrivals at YLW with a name board, and complimentary waiting starts after a tracked landing. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer and equipped for the season, and the desk checks road conditions before departure.
Choosing the vehicle for ski luggage
Ski trips carry more than suitcases. The Elly8.net fleet guide lists a Business Sedan at three passengers and two bags, a Business SUV or Van at six passengers and six bags, and an Executive Sprinter at twelve passengers and twelve bags. Count each ski or snowboard bag and each boot bag as a bag. A couple with two ski bags and two suitcases has already filled a sedan, so most ski bookings to Big White are a Business SUV or a Sprinter. Tell the desk the exact count and any child seats, and the right vehicle is assigned. The fleet page shows every class.
The day trip from Kelowna
Many visitors stay in Kelowna and ski Big White for a day or two, combining the mountain with the lake and the wineries. A full-day chauffeur makes that simple: a morning pickup at the hotel, the drive up while everyone wakes, a day on the slopes with the car parked and waiting, and the descent at dusk without anyone having to drive after skiing. In a Business SUV at US$1,035 for six people, the arithmetic comes to about US$173 each, for comparison only; the fare is per vehicle.
A ski week based on the mountain can work the other way round: a rest day down in the valley, with a winery lunch and a walk on the Kelowna waterfront, then back up before dark. Winter tasting rooms keep their own hours, so check them first; our Kelowna wine tour guide explains how to plan a tasting day.
On a weekend, compare that with the weekend ski shuttle. For two people, the shuttle will usually be cheaper. For a family of five with gear, a private day starts to make sense, especially with young children who need seats and a warm car between runs.
The arrival day from YLW
The most common Big White booking is the transfer from the airport on arrival day. Here a private car changes the experience more than the price. The flight lands, the chauffeur is in arrivals, the ski bags go into the back of an SUV or Sprinter, and the car heads up Highway 33 without waiting for other passengers or a scheduled departure. At the top, the chauffeur stops at your building's entrance, not at a central stop, which matters in a village where parking on the roads is prohibited and the snow is deep.
For the trip home, book the return at the same time. Checkout day at a ski resort is when everyone leaves together, and the desk confirms the pickup time the day before, allowing for the road and the airport. The airport transfers page explains meet and greet in detail.
Weather, timing and the honest caveats
Mountain weather sets the pace. On a clear day the drive is under an hour; in a heavy snowfall it can take much longer, whoever is driving. No car service can make a closed road open, and we tell you that plainly. What a booked chauffeur can do is watch the forecast, check DriveBC, adjust the pickup time, keep you informed, and drive to the conditions. If your flight is delayed by the same weather, flight tracking moves the pickup automatically.
Summer is a different trip. Big White runs a bike park and scenic chairlift rides in the warm months, and the road is a far simpler drive without snow and ice. A private car in summer is about convenience for groups and families rather than winter safety.
Groups, retreats and celebrations
Big White works well for corporate retreats and group ski weeks, with dozens of people arriving at YLW on different flights. Several Executive Sprinters and SUVs can be timed to arriving flights and run as one group booking, so nobody waits hours at the terminal. See group transportation, corporate car service and a corporate account for monthly invoicing. If the group is staying in Kelowna and heading to the mountain for one day, our Kelowna party bus guide covers larger vehicles and hours.
How booking works
- Enter YLW with your flight number, or your Kelowna address, and your Big White hotel, condo or chalet as the drop-off.
- Choose the vehicle by passengers and ski bags, and add child seats.
- Get the quote in the web booker and reserve; for a day trip, book the full-day chauffeur. Confirmation comes by email.
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, refunded to the original card. Rides in Kelowna are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
