Whether a Kelowna airport shuttle is worth it depends far more on where you are going than on the shuttle itself. Kelowna International Airport (YLW) is only about 16 km (10 mi) from downtown, roughly 20 minutes on a clear road, and a private Elly8.net car for that trip is a fixed US$110 in a Business Sedan, US$145 in a Business SUV and US$290 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. On a trip that short, the saving from sharing a vehicle with strangers is small. On the 56 km (35 mi) mountain road to Big White, the sums change.
Tourism Kelowna says car rentals, shuttles, taxis and rideshares are all available at the YLW terminal, and Big White runs its own airport shuttle for resort guests. This guide sets out which travellers should share a ride, which should book a door-to-door car, and how to do the arithmetic for your own group.
Is a shared shuttle cheaper than a private car from YLW?
For one traveller, usually. For a group, often not, because a shuttle charges every seat and a private car charges once. From YLW to downtown, Elly8.net is US$110 per Business Sedan for up to three, US$145 per Business SUV for up to six and US$290 per Executive Sprinter for up to twelve, fixed and all-in.
The way to compare is simple. Take the shuttle's per-person fare from the operator, multiply it by the number of travellers, and set it against the vehicle that fits your group and bags. The table does the other half: what each Elly8.net vehicle comes to per person for the YLW to downtown run. These figures are arithmetic for comparison only; every fare is charged per vehicle, never per person.
| Group | Vehicle that fits | Fixed fare, YLW to downtown | Per person, as arithmetic |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Business Sedan | US$110 | US$110 |
| 2 | Business Sedan | US$110 | US$55 |
| 3 | Business Sedan, or SUV with more bags | US$110 or US$145 | about US$37 or US$48 |
| 4 | Business SUV / Van | US$145 | about US$36 |
| 6 | Business SUV / Van | US$145 | about US$24 |
| 10 | Executive Sprinter | US$290 | US$29 |
| 12 | Executive Sprinter | US$290 | about US$24 |

Destination by destination
Downtown Kelowna and the waterfront hotels. This is the weakest case for a shared shuttle. The drive is short, and a shuttle that stops at several hotels can take longer than a direct car. The city bus is also an option here: Tourism Kelowna's transit guide lists Route 23 from the airport connecting to RapidBus 97 at UBC Okanagan, at C$3.00 a ride. For one person with a backpack, that beats any shuttle or car on price. For two or more with real luggage, a door-to-door car at US$110 for the vehicle is hard to argue against.
Lake Country, the Mission and West Kelowna. Shared shuttles are built around common stops, and a winery estate in Lake Country, a lake house in the Mission or a resort in West Kelowna is rarely one of them. These addresses are where a door-to-door car earns its place, and the web booker prices any of them. The city is long and narrow, following the lake and Highway 97, so the extra kilometres are real.
Big White. This is the strongest case for sharing. Big White says it provides regular shuttle service from Kelowna International Airport, booked and paid online through its own platform with your flight and accommodation details ready, and that the resort is about 55 minutes from Kelowna. For a solo skier or a couple staying in the village, a shared seat to the mountain is often the economical choice. For a family with ski bags and child seats, or a group of six or more, a private Business SUV or Sprinter booked through our web booker brings the per-person cost close to a shuttle seat and leaves when you land. Our Kelowna to Big White guide covers that trip in detail.
The costs that are not on a shuttle ticket
Waiting for the departure. A scheduled shuttle leaves when it leaves. YLW is a compact terminal, but a delayed connection through Vancouver or Calgary can still put you behind a departure. A private car is booked against the flight number; the chauffeur works to the actual landing time and waits inside arrivals with a name board, and complimentary waiting starts after a tracked landing.
Waiting for the other passengers. A shared ride may hold for other flights or other travellers before it sets off, and it may stop at several properties on the way. On a 20-minute trip downtown, the stops can double the journey.
The last stretch. A shuttle stops at its stops. A private car goes to the door of a lake house, a winery or a condo, and the chauffeur helps with bags, golf clubs and skis.
Child seats. On a private car they are available on request and fitted before pickup. Ask a shuttle operator about its policy before you rely on it.
Luggage: golf bags, skis and wine
Kelowna luggage is rarely just suitcases. Summer brings golf bags, winter brings ski and snowboard bags, and many visitors fly home with cases of wine. Shared shuttles set their own baggage limits, so check them when you book a seat. With a private car, the vehicle sets the limit: the Elly8.net fleet guide lists a Business Sedan at three passengers and two bags, a Business SUV or Van at six passengers and six bags, and an Executive Sprinter at twelve and twelve. A foursome with golf bags and suitcases is an SUV at minimum; a golf group of eight is a Sprinter. The fleet page shows each class.
Who should take the shuttle
We say it plainly: a shared shuttle is a good choice for some travellers. Take one if you are:
- A solo traveller or a couple, with ordinary luggage.
- Heading to a common destination, such as a Big White village hotel, on a day and time the shuttle runs.
- Landing at a reasonable hour on a direct flight, with little risk of missing the departure.
- Comfortable with a few extra stops in exchange for a lower fare.
If you are going downtown alone with a carry-on, consider the bus or a taxi too; both are cheap for the short run. There is no prize for paying more than the trip needs, and the desk would rather you book a car for the trips where it genuinely helps, such as the late arrival, the winery day or the family transfer with child seats.
Who should book a door-to-door car
- Families and groups of three or more, where one vehicle costs less than a handful of seats.
- Golf and ski groups whose gear would not fit, or would not be welcome, on a shared vehicle.
- Anyone heading to a winery, a lake house or West Kelowna, where shuttles do not stop.
- Late or connecting arrivals, protected by flight tracking.
- Wedding guests and corporate retreats, moving many people on several flights; see group transportation and wedding limousine and guest shuttles.
- Business travellers who need a fixed price, a receipt and monthly invoicing through a corporate account.

Questions to ask a shuttle operator before you book
Tourism Kelowna's list of local transportation operators groups shuttle services and tour operators, coach companies for groups, rental cars and taxis. If a shared shuttle looks right for your trip, five questions will tell you whether it really fits.
Is the fare per person or per vehicle? Most shared services charge per seat. Multiply by your group before comparing.
Which days and times does it run? Some services are seasonal or scheduled around peak arrivals. Big White, for example, also lists a weekend ski shuttle from Kelowna and West Kelowna on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, separate from its airport service.
What happens if my flight is late? Ask whether the departure waits, whether you move to the next one, and whether there is a charge.
How many stops before mine? A shuttle that serves several hotels or resorts can turn a 20-minute drive into an hour.
What luggage is allowed? Ski bags, golf bags, bike boxes and wine cases may count differently from suitcases, and space is shared with other passengers.
If the answers leave you unsure, a fixed door-to-door fare removes the guesswork: one price per vehicle, a chauffeur in arrivals, and the car leaves when you are ready.
Round trips and departures
Every Elly8.net airport fare is the same in both directions, and booking the round trip together is cheaper: US$210 in a Business Sedan, US$280 in a Business SUV and US$555 in an Executive Sprinter for YLW to downtown and back. That locks in the car for departure day, which matters on summer Sundays and the end of ski weeks when everyone checks out together. The desk confirms the pickup time the day before, allowing for the drive and the airport.
When the trip does not end at the hotel
Many Kelowna visitors go straight from the airport to something else: a winery lunch, a golf tee time, a wedding rehearsal. A shuttle cannot do that; an hourly booking can. Hourly service starts at US$110 an hour in a Business Sedan and US$140 in a Business SUV, with a 3-hour minimum. For a tasting day, the 8-hour Okanagan Valley wineries package starts at US$810 per vehicle, and our Kelowna wine tour guide explains how to plan it. Frequently asked questions
Is there a shuttle from Kelowna airport?
Yes. Tourism Kelowna says shuttles, taxis, rideshares and car rentals are available at the YLW terminal, and Big White runs a regular airport shuttle for its guests, booked online with your flight and accommodation details. Check each operator for fares, timetables and baggage limits before you book.
How much is a private car from YLW to downtown Kelowna?
A fixed Elly8.net fare of US$110 in a Business Sedan, US$145 in a Business SUV, US$195 in a First Class Sedan, US$180 in a First Class SUV and US$290 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle and all-in. The round trip starts at US$210.
Is the shuttle to Big White better than a private car?
For one or two skiers staying in the village, a shared seat is often cheaper. For families with ski bags and child seats, or groups of six or more, a private SUV or Sprinter booked through the web booker comes close per person and leaves when you land.
Will a private car wait if my flight is late?
Yes. The desk tracks the flight, the chauffeur adjusts to the actual landing time and waits inside arrivals with a name board, and complimentary waiting starts after a tracked landing. A shuttle that runs to a timetable cannot do that.
Can a private car take golf bags and cases of wine?
Yes, if the right vehicle is booked. The fleet guide lists two bags for a Business Sedan, six for a Business SUV and twelve for an Executive Sprinter. Count golf bags and wine cases as bags and tell the desk at booking.
Is a private car worth it for one person going downtown?
Often not. The YLW to downtown run is short, and the bus at C$3.00 or a taxi is cheaper for one traveller with light luggage. A private car is worth it for late flights, meetings, child seats or a guaranteed pickup with a fixed price in advance.
