A Kelowna taxi runs on a meter approved by British Columbia's Passenger Transportation Board. Most Central Okanagan taxi licensees on the Board's published list charge a C$4.05 flag, C$2.60 per kilometre and C$48.31 an hour for waiting time, so a 16 km ride from Kelowna International Airport (YLW) to downtown is about C$46 on distance alone. Uber and other ride-hail apps price each trip up front, rising and falling with demand, and cannot go below a minimum rate set by the Board.

Each option has its place. For one person with a light bag, the bus or a taxi is hard to beat on price. For a group, a family with child seats, a winery day or a late flight, a pre-booked car at a fixed fare usually wins. This guide from the Elly8.net reservations desk sets out the real numbers and gives a fair verdict for each kind of trip.

How much is a taxi in Kelowna?

On the Passenger Transportation Board's taxi rates list, most Central Okanagan taxi companies charge a C$4.05 flag, C$2.60 per km and C$48.31 per hour of waiting. YLW to downtown, about 16 km, is roughly C$46 before waiting time. Metered fares are in Canadian dollars.

The figures are from the Board's taxi rates list, last updated in December 2025, where almost every licensee in the Central Okanagan regional district shows the same three numbers. One small operator in the district lists slightly different rates, so if you are in an outlying community, ask the price before you travel. The meter counts distance while the car is moving and waiting time when it is stopped or crawling, which is why a ride through summer traffic on Highway 97 costs more than the same ride at midnight.

The arithmetic below uses the distance rate only, for comparison. Real fares add waiting time at lights and in traffic.

How Uber and other ride-hail apps price a Kelowna trip

Ride-hail companies in BC are licensed by the same Board, and the Board sets only a floor. Its ride-hail rates page explains that passengers agree to an up-front or estimated fare, that the fare must not fall below the regional minimum, and that companies use dynamic pricing: rates rise at peak times to attract more drivers and fall off-peak to attract more riders. Kelowna sits in the Okanagan-Kootenays-Cariboo region, where the minimum rate rose to C$3.95 on August 18, 2026.

That floor matters little in practice. What matters is the multiplier at the hour you ride. A ride-hail trip from YLW at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday in November and the same trip when three flights land together on a summer Friday can be very different prices, and the app does not tell you which one you will get until you open it. We do not publish ride-hail prices, because they are not fixed; the honest advice is to check the app at the moment you need it and compare.

The bus: the cheapest way from YLW

BC Transit runs Kelowna's buses. Tourism Kelowna's transit guide lists fares, as of October 2025, at C$3.00 for a single ride and C$6.00 for a DayPASS, with children 12 and under riding free. From the airport, riders take Route 23 to UBC Okanagan and connect to RapidBus 97 for downtown and the Queensway Exchange; the guide says main RapidBus departures run every 15 to 30 minutes for most of the day. Timetables are on BC Transit.

For one traveller with a backpack, no deadline and daylight, that is the right choice, and we would not tell anyone otherwise. The change at UBC Okanagan and the walk from the stop to your hotel are what make it a poor fit for families, golf bags and late arrivals.

Read the table fairly. The taxi on distance is cheaper than our Business Sedan, in a cheaper currency. The comparison turns when the group grows: four golfers with four bags need a large taxi or two cars, while one Business SUV at US$145 or an Executive Sprinter at US$290 carries everyone and the gear in one vehicle with the price fixed before you fly.

When the taxi is the right call

Take a taxi in Kelowna when:

  • You are one to three people with ordinary luggage and you are happy to join the queue at the curb.
  • You are making a short hop downtown or along the lakeshore and the meter will barely move.
  • You decided at the last minute and a booked car is not worth the planning.
  • You want to pay in Canadian dollars at the end of the trip rather than in US dollars in advance.

Taxis are the workhorse of short trips everywhere, and Kelowna is a compact city at its centre. Our general chauffeur vs taxi page explains the trade-offs.

When ride-hail makes sense

Use a ride-hail app when you are travelling light, your timing is flexible, and you can check the price before committing. Off-peak, mid-afternoon or mid-week, it is often good value. It is less reliable as a plan for 5 a.m. airport runs, for the end of an event at Prospera Place when everyone books at once, or for summer weekends when visitor demand peaks. See chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft and Uber Black vs a chauffeur for the general picture.

When a pre-booked car wins

Groups and gear. Kelowna draws golf groups, wedding parties and ski trips to Big White. A Business SUV takes six passengers and six bags, and an Executive Sprinter takes twelve of each. One vehicle at a fixed price beats juggling two or three taxis at the curb.

Winery days. A tasting day is not a string of taxi rides. It is six to eight hours with the same car and driver, a route planned around reservations, and space for the cases you buy. The 8-hour Okanagan Valley wineries package is priced from US$810 in a Business Sedan. Our Kelowna wine tour guide covers routes and timing.

Late and early flights. The chauffeur tracks the flight, waits inside arrivals with a name board, and complimentary waiting starts after a tracked landing. A delayed evening arrival does not mean a hunt for a car.

Children. Child seats are available on request and fitted before pickup.

Business travel. A fixed fare, a receipt in advance and a corporate account with monthly invoicing make expense reports simple. Corporate roadshow days start at US$990 in a Business Sedan; see corporate car service.

Big White. The resort road climbs into the mountains, and winter rules apply. Our Kelowna to Big White guide compares a private car with the shuttle and driving yourself.

Longer trips across a long, narrow city

Kelowna follows the shore of Okanagan Lake and Highway 97, so many visitor trips are longer than the compact downtown suggests. Lake Country and its wineries lie north toward the airport, the Mission and the lakeshore resorts lie south of downtown, and West Kelowna is across the bridge on the far side of the lake. On the meter, distance adds up. A 30 km (19 mi) ride at C$2.60 per kilometre is about C$82 with the flag, before any waiting time, and an evening that crosses the lake twice can mean two or three fares of that size.

That is the point where an hourly chauffeur becomes a fair comparison rather than an indulgence. From US$110 an hour in a Business Sedan or US$140 in a Business SUV, with a 3-hour minimum, the car takes you out to dinner on the Westside, waits, and brings you back, with no calls to dispatch at closing time. For two people on a single short trip the taxi is still cheaper; for a group of five making three stops, the hourly car usually is not more expensive and is a great deal simpler.

What the rules say about booked cars

BC regulates limousines as well as taxis. The Passenger Transportation Board's limousine rates page says limousine operators must charge rates approved by the Board and must tell customers what the rates and charges will be before the trip starts. That is the principle behind a fixed fare: the price is agreed before anyone gets in the car. Elly8.net goes one step further and fixes the full price at booking, per vehicle, including the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity, with tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time billed at cost.

Busy times to plan around

Taxi queues and ride-hail prices both respond to the same pressure points. Summer weekends bring visitors, golfers and wedding guests through YLW and along Highway 97, which the city page notes slows at the afternoon peak. Festival weekends in wine country, including the Okanagan Wine Festivals in spring and fall, fill the roads between wineries. Hockey nights and concerts at Prospera Place empty a downtown block all at once. On those days, a booked car is not a luxury; it is the way to be sure of a ride.

How booking works

  1. Enter the pickup and drop-off. For YLW, add the flight number so the chauffeur can track it.
  2. Choose the vehicle by passengers and bags, and add child seats or golf bags.
  3. Press Reserve now for YLW to downtown or the wineries package, or use the web booker for West Kelowna, Lake Country, Big White or any other address. Confirmation comes by email.
