Uber and Bolt both operate in Vienna, but the city's rules shape what they can charge. A taxi taken from a rank or hailed in the street always runs on the official meter. A ride ordered by phone, website or app with a price agreed in advance may cost at most 20% more or 20% less than the same ride on the meter, according to the City of Vienna. In the city, that band takes much of the sting out of surge pricing.
The airport is different. Vienna International Airport (VIE) is in Schwechat, in the state of Lower Austria, about 20 km from the centre, and trips across the state border fall outside the city's binding tariff. That is why fixed airport fares are common. For one traveller with a carry-on, the CAT coach or a Railjet is the cheapest way in. For a family, a group, a delegation or a late arrival, a fixed Elly8.net car from US$125 per vehicle is the calmer choice. The numbers follow.
Is Uber, a taxi or a private car cheapest from Vienna Airport?
For one traveller, public transport is cheapest: long-distance trains to Wien Hauptbahnhof from €4.10 and the CAT coach to Wien Mitte at €14.90. Vienna's tourist board lists fixed airport taxi fares of €37 and €42 for up to four passengers. App prices vary. A fixed Elly8.net car starts at US$125 per vehicle.
The airport is about 21 km (13 mi) from the Innere Stadt, about 26 minutes on a clear road. These are the realistic choices for that first trip.
| Option | What you pay | Time and frequency | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Railjet or other long-distance train to Wien Hauptbahnhof | From €4.10, including the Vienna network | About 15 min, around twice an hour | Hotels near the main station, light bags |
| City Airport Train, currently a coach | €14.90 single, €24.90 return | Nonstop to Wien Mitte, every 12 min | Solo travellers heading to the centre |
| Vienna Airport Bus to Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz | Set by the operator | About 20 min, around the clock | Late arrivals on a budget |
| Taxi at a fixed airport price | €37 to €42 for up to four, per the tourist board | About 20 to 25 min | Couples and small parties |
| Uber or Bolt | Set by the app at the time of booking | Pickup wait plus the drive | Travellers who already use the app |
| Elly8.net Business Sedan | From US$125 per vehicle, fixed and all-in | About 26 min, met inside arrivals | Late flights, fixed budgets, meetings |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter | US$325 per vehicle | Up to 12 passengers and 12 bags | Families, groups, delegations |
The private car is not the cheapest way for a single traveller to reach the Ring, and this guide will not pretend it is. A fixed-price taxi for two people with suitcases is good value. The private car wins on certainty, space and service, and on price once the group grows.
How Uber and Bolt fit Vienna's taxi rules
Vienna's official tourist board confirms that rides in Vienna can be ordered through the Uber and Bolt apps, as well as through the city's large radio-taxi dispatchers by phone, app or website. The City of Vienna's taxi tariff page sets out how prices work.
- Rank and street-hail rides run on the meter. The binding tariff applies to every ride that starts at a taxi rank or by waving down a car in the street, and a rider who gets in at a rank pays the regular tariff without exception.
- Pre-booked rides may have an agreed price. When a ride is ordered in advance by phone or online and the price is agreed at booking, the fare may differ from the meter, but only within a band of 20% below to 20% above the metered price for the same trip.
- The reference is public. The city fixes how the comparison ride is calculated, using a public route planner, so anyone can check the band.
The city's own example is a daytime weekday ride of 4 km and 12 minutes. On the meter from a rank it costs €14.56; ordered by phone it costs €16.56 with the booking supplement; and a pre-agreed price for it must fall between €13.25 and €19.87. In practice, under these rules a pre-agreed price for a ride inside Vienna stays close to what the taxi meter would show, even on a busy Saturday night.
None of this applies to the airport run in the same way. The tariff page lists trips that go beyond the tariff area or the state border among the exceptions to the binding tariff, and VIE is across the border in Lower Austria.
Arriving at Vienna Airport
Vienna Airport is clear about where to find a car. Its taxis and limousines page asks passengers to use only the taxi rank directly in front of the arrivals hall or the City Transfer counters inside it, and warns against accepting rides from anyone who approaches you in the arrivals hall, describing it as unauthorised soliciting, often by people without the necessary business licence.
The tourist board adds two useful details. Spontaneous rides from the airport into Vienna are run by taxis with registration plates beginning SW and ending TX, while licensed Vienna taxis carry plates beginning W and ending TX, ATX, BTX, CTX or DTX. And fixed prices to or from the airport can be booked in advance; the board lists €37 through one dispatcher's app and €42 through another, each for up to four passengers, with a reminder to request an airport taxi when ordering to avoid a return-trip charge.
If you use an app, follow its pickup instructions at the terminal and check the price shown before confirming.
The train and coach options, honestly
Vienna's airport rail links are good, and they are changing. According to the City Airport Train, the central section of Vienna's main S-Bahn line is closed for modernisation until the end of October 2027. During the works, the CAT runs as a premium coach direct between the airport and Wien Mitte/Landstraße every 12 minutes, at €14.90 single or €24.90 return. Long-distance REX, Railjet, RJX and IC trains link the airport with Wien Hauptbahnhof around twice an hour, and the S7 runs only as far as St. Marx, where you change to tram 18 or 71.
The airport's rail page gives about 15 minutes to Wien Hauptbahnhof by Railjet, with fares from €4.10 including travel on the whole Vienna public transport network. The Vienna Airport Bus reaches Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz in about 20 minutes, around the clock. For one traveller with a carry-on, these are the right answer.
They become harder work with three suitcases, two children and a stroller, after a long overnight flight, or with a 9:00 meeting at the Vienna International Centre.
Choosing by trip: who should book what
| Traveller | Our honest pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, carry-on, hotel near Wien Hauptbahnhof | Railjet, from €4.10 | About 15 minutes, includes the city network |
| Solo, hotel near Wien Mitte | CAT coach, €14.90 | Nonstop, every 12 minutes |
| Couple with suitcases, Ring hotel | Taxi at a fixed airport price | €37 to €42 for up to four |
| Family of five with child seats | Elly8.net Business SUV, US$165 | Seats fitted in advance, room for six bags |
| Delegation to the VIC | Elly8.net by the hour, from US$85 an hour | The car waits between sessions |
| Late arrival, fixed budget | Elly8.net Business Sedan, US$125 | Price agreed before you fly, name board |
The group arithmetic is simple. A Business SUV at US$165 for five people is US$33 each, and an Executive Sprinter at US$325 for ten is US$32.50 each, as arithmetic for comparison only; Elly8.net fares are per vehicle. A party of ten would otherwise need three taxis, each with its own fare and its own wait at the rank.
When a private car is the better call
Arrivals that must work. The chauffeur tracks your flight, waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, and complimentary waiting after a tracked landing covers a long passport queue or a slow bag belt. If a connection through Frankfurt, Munich or Zurich slips, the 24/7 desk moves the pickup. See airport transfers and meet and greet.
Families and groups. A standard taxi seats four, and the fixed airport fares listed by the tourist board are for up to four passengers. A Business SUV or Van takes six passengers and six bags, and an Executive Sprinter twelve and twelve. Child and booster seats are fitted before pickup when you give the ages. See group transportation.
Delegations and congresses. The hourly service costs US$85 an hour in a Business Sedan to US$170 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum, and the corporate roadshow day from US$765 to US$1,530. Each organisation sets its own entry rules and the chauffeur follows them. See corporate car service and corporate accounts for monthly invoicing and NDAs on request.
Delegations heading to the Vienna International Centre, at Wagramer Strasse 5 across the Danube, should note that its visitors entrance is beside the Kaisermühlen/Vienna International Centre U-Bahn stop, seven minutes from the city centre on the U1, according to the UN Information Service. Visitors are asked to bring an official photo ID. A pre-booked car takes the delegation from the hotel to the drop-off point the organisation sets, and waits or returns at the end of the session.
Big nights. On Opera Ball night or after a concert at the Musikverein, a car waiting outside beats an app queue at 2 am. The evening out and event night package costs from US$425 in a Business Sedan to US$850 in an Executive Sprinter.

Leaving Vienna: the hotel to airport run
The departure deserves the same planning as the arrival. From a hotel near Wien Mitte, the CAT coach leaves every 12 minutes, and from Wien Hauptbahnhof the long-distance trains run around twice an hour, so a light traveller has easy options. A fixed-price taxi booked in advance is the simple choice for two people with luggage; the tourist board notes that one dispatcher's fixed price applies only to direct trips from a Vienna address to the airport, so mention any extra stop when you order.
A pre-booked Elly8.net car costs exactly what the arrival did, because every airport fare is the same fixed price in either direction. Booking both legs together as a round trip costs from US$240 in a Business Sedan to US$620 in an Executive Sprinter, and the car for your departure is settled before you land. Vienna Airport checks in passengers in Terminals 1, 1A and 3; give the desk your airline and flight number and the chauffeur sets you down at the right terminal.
Getting around once you are in Vienna
For short hops around the Innere Stadt, a taxi from a rank or an app ride is quick and fairly priced, and our Vienna taxi guide explains the meter, the night rate and the ranks in detail. For a day with several stops, an hourly car is simpler than calling a new ride at each address. For trips out of the city, a private driver opens up routes such as Vienna to Bratislava by car or train.
How booking works
Rides in Vienna are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer, seven for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley.

Frequently asked questions
Does Uber work in Vienna?
Yes. Vienna's tourist board confirms that rides can be ordered through the Uber and Bolt apps. Under the city's rules, a pre-booked ride with an agreed price may cost at most 20% more or less than the same ride on the official taxi meter, which keeps agreed prices for rides within the city close to the meter.
How much is a taxi from Vienna Airport to the city centre?
Vienna's tourist board lists fixed airport fares of €37 and €42 from the city's large radio-taxi dispatchers, each for up to four passengers, when booked in advance. At the airport, use only the rank in front of the arrivals hall or the City Transfer counters, as the airport advises.
Is the train cheaper than Uber from Vienna Airport?
Yes. Long-distance trains reach Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes from €4.10, including the Vienna network, and the CAT coach runs to Wien Mitte every 12 minutes for €14.90. During rail works until the end of October 2027, the CAT runs by coach.
Why are Vienna Airport taxi prices fixed?
The airport is in Schwechat, in Lower Austria, outside Vienna's tariff area. The city's binding taxi tariff does not apply to trips beyond the tariff area or the state border, so taxi firms offer fixed airport prices booked in advance instead.
What does a private car from VIE to the Innere Stadt cost?
A fixed Elly8.net transfer costs from US$125 in a Business Sedan and US$165 in a Business SUV to US$325 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle, in either direction. It includes the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet; parking and extra waiting are billed at cost.
When is a private car worth it in Vienna?
For families and groups of five or more, delegations heading to the Vienna International Centre, late arrivals, and big nights such as the Opera Ball. A pre-booked chauffeur waits for you with a name board, the price is fixed in advance, and one vehicle carries everyone.
