Uber operates in Edinburgh, and for most short trips around the city it does the job well. Uber's own city page says the app is available 24 hours a day, offers larger UberXL cars for groups, and lets riders reserve a ride up to 30 days ahead. What it does not publish is a fixed price: the fare is quoted in the app at the moment you ask, and when demand is high it rises.
That matters in a city whose calendar swings so hard. In August, at Hogmanay and on Murrayfield match days, Edinburgh fills up, and app prices and wait times follow. At the airport, app pickups happen in the car park zones rather than at the terminal door. A pre-booked Elly8.net car from Edinburgh Airport to the New Town costs from US$130 in a business sedan to US$340 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed per vehicle, with the chauffeur waiting inside arrivals. Here is how to decide between the two.
Is Uber available in Edinburgh?
Yes. Uber operates in Edinburgh around the clock, with standard and larger UberXL cars and rides that can be reserved up to 30 days ahead. Prices are quoted in the app and change with demand, and at Edinburgh Airport app pickups use the car park pickup zones, not the terminal kerb.
Availability is generally good in the city centre on an ordinary weekday. It thins out late at night, at the edges of the city and during the big events, which is when you are most likely to see a higher price and a longer wait.

How Uber pricing works, and why it surges
Uber's fares are not published as a tariff the way taxi fares are. Uber explains its surge pricing as an automatic, algorithm-driven increase that applies when there are more riders in an area than drivers available, updated in real time and calculated for small local zones. Its stated purpose is to draw more drivers to busy areas. The practical effect for a rider is simple: the same trip can cost noticeably more at 11 pm on a festival Saturday than at 11 am on a Tuesday.
On its Edinburgh page, Uber shows only average UberX prices to a handful of popular destinations, with a note that actual prices vary with traffic, demand and other factors. It also notes that some trips to and from airports can carry a surcharge to cover the minimum cost of parking at airport car parks, and that if dynamic pricing is in effect the quoted fare will take it into account.
That is why this guide does not quote an Uber fare for any route. The honest answer is that the price is known only when you open the app.
Where Uber picks you up at Edinburgh Airport
Edinburgh Airport has one terminal, and its official taxi rank, in the East Terminus a short walk from arrivals, is run exclusively by Capital Cars, according to the airport's taxi page. Other taxi and private hire operators, which includes app-based rides, use one of two zones instead:
- the charged pickup and drop-off zone on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park, the closest option to the terminal;
- the free zone in the Long Stay car park, which the airport says is about a ten-minute walk from the terminal and free for 30 minutes, with no shuttle bus.
Both are described on the airport's pickup and drop-off zones page. In practice, after a transatlantic flight, that means collecting your bags, walking to the multi-storey with them, finding your driver in the zone, and paying whatever parking charge is passed through on the fare. With a family and four cases, it is a longer walk than it sounds.
By contrast, an Elly8.net chauffeur tracks your flight and waits inside arrivals with a name board, and walks to the car with you. Waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, so a long passport queue costs nothing extra.
When Edinburgh demand peaks
August. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the International Festival and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo all run in August. The Fringe takes over the Old Town, streets are pedestrianised, hotels are full and every kind of car is in demand, particularly when the late shows let out.
Hogmanay. The New Year celebrations open with the Torchlight Procession on 29 December 2026 and peak with the Street Party on 31 December 2026, per the organisers. Getting any car near Princes Street as the Street Party ends is hard. See Edinburgh's Hogmanay.
Murrayfield. Scotland rugby internationals and stadium concerts fill a ground of about 67,000 beside the main road to the airport. After the final whistle, everyone wants a ride at once. See Scottish Rugby.
July 2027. The Open returns to St Andrews from 11 to 18 July 2027, according to The Open, and many visitors stay in Edinburgh and travel north each day.
Friday and Saturday nights. Ordinary weekend nights bring their own peaks around closing time, when bars and restaurants empty at once.
If your trip falls on any of these, plan your rides, not just your hotel.
Uber, taxi, tram, bus or a pre-booked car
| Option | Price | Pickup at the airport | Pricing behaviour | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uber or other app | Quoted in the app; not published | Car park pickup zones | Rises with demand | Light travellers, ordinary days |
| Taxi from the official rank | Metered on the council tariff | East Terminus rank | Fixed tariff by time of day | Walk-up trips, no booking |
| Edinburgh Trams | £7.90 adult airport single | Tram stop at the terminal | Fixed fare | One traveller, hotel near the line |
| Airlink 100 bus | £6.00 single | Bus stops outside the terminal | Fixed fare | Budget trips, any hour |
| Elly8.net business sedan | US$130 fixed, per vehicle | Inside arrivals, name board | Fixed when booked | Families, groups, events, late arrivals |
The tram fare is published by Edinburgh Trams and the Airlink fare by Lothian Buses. Taxi fares in Edinburgh are set by the City of Edinburgh Council, which published its current taxi fare table effective 25 July 2026. Our companion guide, Edinburgh taxi or rideshare, goes through that tariff in detail.
When Uber is the smarter call
Be fair to the app. For a short hop across the city on an ordinary afternoon, from the New Town to Stockbridge or from a restaurant in Leith back to your hotel, Uber is quick, convenient and almost certainly cheaper than any pre-booked car. For one person with a carry-on landing at midday, the tram at £7.90 is cheaper still and very reliable. There is no reason to book a chauffeur for those trips, and we would not suggest it.
When a pre-booked car wins
Arrival day after a long flight. Transatlantic flights from North America often land early in the morning. A car waiting inside arrivals, at a price already paid in US dollars, removes the walk to the car park zone and any guesswork about the fare.
Families and groups. An Executive Sprinter takes twelve passengers and twelve bags in one vehicle, at a fixed US$340 from the airport to the New Town. A Business SUV takes six passengers and six bags for US$170. Splitting a group across several app rides, each arriving at a different moment, is the alternative.
Golf bags and heavy luggage. A business sedan takes three passengers and two bags; golfers with clubs need an SUV or a Sprinter. Booking ahead guarantees the right size.
Event nights. On a festival evening, for Hogmanay or after a match, the chauffeur waits at an agreed point outside the closures. The evening out and event night package costs from US$450 in a business sedan, US$575 in a business SUV and US$900 in an Executive Sprinter, with the car waiting for you.
Child seats. Request them when you book and the partner fits them before pickup.
Business travel. A fixed fare, an invoice and one desk for every city. Companies can open a corporate account with monthly invoicing.
What about Uber Black and premium app cars?
Premium app tiers vary by city and by the hour, and their prices move with demand in the same way. The difference with a pre-booked chauffeur is the fixed price, the meeting inside arrivals and the vehicle class confirmed in advance. We set out the comparison in general terms in Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft.
Elly8.net fares in Edinburgh
| Vehicle | Seats and bags | Airport to the New Town | By the hour, 3-hour minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 passengers, 2 bags | US$130 | US$90 |
| Business SUV | 6 passengers, 6 bags | US$170 | US$115 |
| First Class SUV | 6 passengers, 6 bags | US$210 | US$135 |
| First Class Sedan | 3 passengers, 2 bags | US$230 | US$145 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 passengers, 12 bags | US$340 | US$180 |
Fares are fixed, all-in and per vehicle, including the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet; parking and road charges are billed at cost. The airport fare is the same in either direction. Rides in Edinburgh are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. The full price list is on the Edinburgh fares panel.
If you do use the app: practical tips
Check the price before you confirm. The quote in the app reflects demand at that moment. If it looks high on a festival night, waiting a little or walking a few streets away from the crowd sometimes helps, because surge is calculated for small local zones.
Confirm the car before you get in. Match the registration and the driver's name shown in the app. Licensed private hire cars in Edinburgh must be booked, which is why the airport asks walk-up passengers to book at the rank.
At the airport, choose your zone first. Decide whether you will walk to the charged zone in the multi-storey or the free zone in the Long Stay car park before you request the ride, and allow for the walk with your bags.
Have a fallback for big nights. On Hogmanay or after a match, know where the nearest tram stop or bus route is, or book the ride home before you go out.
Keep receipts for expenses. App receipts arrive by email; a corporate account with us gives one monthly invoice instead.
Longer trips out of the city
Apps are built for short urban rides. For a day out to St Andrews or Glasgow, a booked car with a fixed price is the more predictable choice; see our guides to Edinburgh to St Andrews and Edinburgh to Glasgow by car.

Frequently asked questions
Does Uber work at Edinburgh Airport?
Yes, but app pickups do not happen at the terminal kerb. The official rank in the East Terminus is run by Capital Cars; other operators use the charged pickup zone on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park or the free zone in the Long Stay car park, about a ten-minute walk.
How much is an Uber from Edinburgh Airport to the city centre?
Uber does not publish fixed fares; the price is quoted in the app and changes with demand, and airport trips can include a parking surcharge. For a known price, the tram is £7.90, the Airlink bus £6.00, and an Elly8.net business sedan US$130 per vehicle, fixed.
When is surge pricing worst in Edinburgh?
When demand outruns available drivers: festival nights in August, Hogmanay, the end of matches and concerts at Murrayfield, and weekend closing time. A pre-booked car's price is fixed when you book, so these peaks do not change it, and the chauffeur is already waiting.
Can you book an Uber in advance in Edinburgh?
Uber's city page says rides can be reserved up to 30 days ahead. A reserved app ride still meets you at the airport pickup zones. An Elly8.net booking is met inside arrivals with a name board, and the price is fixed and charged in US dollars when you book.
Is a pre-booked car worth it for a family?
Usually, yes. A Business SUV takes six passengers and six bags for a fixed US$170 from the airport to the New Town, with child seats fitted on request and the chauffeur waiting inside arrivals. One app ride may not fit a family's luggage, and two rarely arrive together.
What is the Elly8.net cancellation policy?
Free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go to the original card. If your flight changes, message the 24/7 desk and the pickup moves.
