An Ottawa taxi is metered and licensed by the City of Ottawa, so the price depends on distance, time in traffic and the hour, with a tip customary on top. Rideshare apps quote before you confirm, but the quote rises when many people request at once. For short trips around the core at quiet times, either one is usually fine and cheaper than a chauffeur.
The difference shows up when Ottawa is busy: a sold-out game in Kanata, a ceremony that closes Wellington Street, a snowfall at rush hour, or a late arrival with four people and their luggage. This guide from the Elly8.net reservations desk sets out how each option behaves, where the official numbers exist, and when a pre-booked car with a fixed price is worth paying for.
How much is a taxi in Ottawa?
Ottawa taxis charge by the meter under City of Ottawa licensing, so a fare grows with kilometres driven and minutes stuck in traffic, plus a customary tip. App rides show a price before you accept, and that price moves with demand. A pre-booked Elly8.net business sedan from the airport to Parliament Hill is US$105, fixed and all-in.
The meter is the honest answer for most short city rides: you pay for the trip you actually take. The catch is that you do not know the final number until you arrive, and in Ottawa the variables are unusually seasonal. A 15-minute summer ride across Centretown can take twice as long in a January squall or on a Canada Day afternoon when half the core is closed.
If you want to estimate a specific trip before you go, our Ottawa taxi rates calculator walks through the arithmetic, including the Gatineau side of the river, where Quebec sets the taxi rates.
How rideshare pricing behaves in Ottawa
App rides are priced by the platform, not by a published tariff. You see the price, or a range, before you confirm, which removes the meter surprise. What you cannot control is the level: when demand jumps, the app raises the price and stretches the wait while it finds a driver.
Rideshare prices are not published in advance, so we do not quote them. What we can describe is the pattern our desk sees every week in Ottawa:
- Weekday daytime in the core: short waits and moderate prices. Rideshare and taxi are both reasonable for a solo traveller hopping between the Hill, a hotel and a lunch in the Market.
- Late evenings in the ByWard Market: many people leave restaurants and bars at the same time, the narrow streets fill, and both the app price and the pickup wait rise.
- Event exits: after a Senators game, a concert or a festival night, thousands of phones open the same app in the same few minutes.
- Weather: the first heavy snowfall of the season, freezing rain or a cold snap brings more requests and slower driving at the same time.
At the airport, app pickups have their own place. The Ottawa International Airport Authority assigns rideshare pickup and drop-off to pillars 12 and 13, on the curb furthest from the terminal on Level 1. The airport side of this comparison has its own guide: taxi at Ottawa airport.
What makes Ottawa waits longer
Neither taxis nor apps publish wait times, but the causes are predictable, and most of them are on a calendar.
Game nights in the west end. The Canadian Tire Centre, home of the Ottawa Senators and the PWHL's Ottawa Charge, sits in Kanata, about 25 km from downtown. A sold-out crowd leaves at once, and cars heading back to the core all use the same highway. Expect a long queue for any car that was not arranged in advance; see the Canadian Tire Centre for event schedules.
Lansdowne. TD Place, home of the Ottawa Redblacks and the 67's, sits on Bank Street in the Glebe. Bank Street fills before and after games, and drivers struggle to stop near the gates.
Ceremonies and closures. Ottawa closes streets for national events. The National Remembrance Day Ceremony at the National War Memorial on 11 November closes Confederation Square, Elgin and Wellington around it. Canada Day on 1 July closes Wellington Street and restricts bridge traffic to Gatineau. Winterlude, from late January to mid-February, puts sites on both sides of the river.
Bridges. At rush hour the bridge approaches are often the slowest part of any trip between a downtown hotel and an office or museum on the Quebec side.
Snow. Ottawa winters are long. Snow clearing narrows lanes, and pickups on side streets in Lower Town or Centretown take longer to reach.
Crossing to Gatineau: different province, different rules
Ottawa and Gatineau feel like one city, but they are in two provinces. A taxi licensed in Gatineau charges the rates set by Quebec's transport tribunal, the Commission des transports du Québec, which publishes them in full: by day, C$4.10 to start, C$2.05 per kilometre and C$46.20 per hour of waiting; by night (trips starting 11 p.m. to 4:59 a.m.), C$4.70, C$2.35 and C$53.40. A C$1.05 fee is added to every trip. The CTQ also requires an app to show the maximum price in writing before the driver is told about your request.
For a visitor, the practical point is simple: which taxi you get depends partly on which side of the river you start, and a ride across a bridge in traffic adds waiting time on the meter. A pre-booked chauffeur charges the same fixed price for an Ottawa or Gatineau address, because we treat both as one service area.

When the taxi or the app is the smarter call
Be fair to the alternatives. For many Ottawa trips, a taxi or an app ride is the right choice and a chauffeur is not.
- Short hops in the core. Château Laurier to the Rideau Centre, the Market to a Centretown hotel: a few minutes either way, and a meter costs little.
- Flexible timing. If you are happy to wait ten minutes, or walk a block to a quieter street, the app works well.
- One person, no luggage, quiet hours. No pre-booked service beats a short metered ride on price.
- Transit-friendly days. The O-Train and buses cover much of the core. OC Transpo's adult fare is C$4.10 with a Presto card or a tap of your bank card, with a 90-minute transfer window and a daily cap of C$12.25, according to OC Transpo fares.
When a pre-booked car wins
A booked chauffeur earns its price when the trip has to work the first time.
- Late arrivals. A flight landing near midnight, or a delayed train into the station at 200 Tremblay Road, is not the moment to start searching. The chauffeur tracks the arrival and waits.
- Groups and bags. One Business SUV carries up to six people and six bags; an Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 people with luggage. Splitting a group into two taxis costs time and often money.
- Fixed appointments. A committee appearance, a reception at an official residence or a board meeting does not move because the app is busy. Our government and diplomatic transportation and corporate car service pages explain how we plan around Ottawa's closures.
- Event nights. A car held near the arena or the venue, with a pickup point agreed before the game, avoids the exit queue. See sports event transportation.
- A fixed budget. The price is set before you travel, in US dollars, with tolls and parking billed at cost.

Frequently asked questions
Is a taxi or Uber cheaper in Ottawa?
It depends on the hour and the demand. A taxi charges the meter, so a quiet, short trip can be cheaper than a busy-hour app fare. An app shows the price first, which helps when you want certainty for a single ride. On event nights and in bad weather, app prices tend to rise, while the meter keeps running in slow traffic.
Is it easy to get a taxi after a Senators game?
Expect a wait. The Canadian Tire Centre is in Kanata, about 25 km from downtown, and the whole crowd leaves at once. A car arranged in advance with an agreed pickup point is the reliable option. Our evening out and event night package starts at US$550 in a business sedan and covers the drive out, the wait and the return.
Do Ottawa taxis and rideshare cars have child seats?
Generally you should expect to bring your own. With Elly8.net, child seats are available on request: give the child's age and weight when you book, and the right seat is fitted before pickup. That matters most for families landing at the airport with luggage and no car seat.
Can one booked car take us to both Ottawa and Gatineau?
Yes. We treat Ottawa and Gatineau as one service area, so a booked car crosses the river without any change of vehicle or price. Hourly bookings start at US$110 in a business sedan with a 3-hour minimum, which suits a day mixing the Hill, a Gatineau office and a dinner in the Market.
What does it cost to cancel a booked car?
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10%, at 48 hours or less 50%, and at 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%. Refunds go to the original card. Taxis and app rides have no advance commitment, which is part of why they suit flexible plans.
Is the Elly8.net price in Canadian or US dollars?
US dollars. Every Elly8.net price is fixed and charged in US$, including taxes and standard gratuity. Ottawa taxi meters, app fares and OC Transpo fares are in Canadian dollars, so compare them after your card's exchange rate. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost.
