A taxi at Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW) is a walk-up affair: collect your bags, go out to Level 1, Arrivals, and join the queue that forms outside the centre door. Fully accessible taxis are available on request through the on-site attendant. The fare is metered, so it depends on where you are going and how the traffic moves, and a tip is customary on top.
For most travellers arriving in daylight with modest luggage, that is a perfectly good way into Ottawa. This guide from the Elly8.net desk explains exactly where the rank is, how the YOW curbs are organised, how to estimate the fare, and the specific arrivals when a pre-booked car with a fixed price is the better choice.
Where is the taxi rank at Ottawa airport?
The YOW taxi queue forms outside the centre door on Level 1, the Arrivals level, according to the Ottawa International Airport Authority. Accessible vehicles are available on request from the on-site attendant. Taxis drop off on Level 3, Departures. Passenger loading is not permitted on Level 3, so all pickups happen on Level 1.
The airport authority's ground transportation page recommends airport-authorized services for your safety and lists a Parking and Ground Transportation service office on Level 1 of the parkade (P1), in the rental car corridor, reachable at 613-248-4304. That is the office to contact about anything that goes wrong at the curb.
Every YOW pickup point on one page
Ottawa's terminal is compact, but each mode has its own spot. Knowing them saves walking in the wrong direction with a heavy case.
| Mode | Where it picks up | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Taxi | Queue outside the centre door, Level 1 | Accessible vehicles on request from the attendant |
| Rideshare | Pillars 12 and 13, curb furthest from the terminal, Level 1 | Request in the app once you have your bags |
| Pre-arranged service (for example a luxury vehicle) | Pillars 12 and 13, Level 1 | Where Elly8.net chauffeurs bring you after meeting you inside |
| Hotel shuttles | Pillars 13 to 15, Level 1 | Check with your hotel whether it runs one |
| Charter bus and Park'N Fly | Pillars 15 and 16, Level 1 | Groups with a pre-arranged coach |
| Para Transpo | Pillars 9 and 10, road closest to the terminal | Advance registration required |
| OC Transpo route 105 | Departures roadway, Level 3, south end | 24 hours, every 30 minutes |
| O-Train Line 4 | Airport station, connected to Level 3, north end | 6:00 a.m. to midnight |
All of these come from the airport authority's own list. The practical takeaway: everything you can hail or meet in a car is on Level 1; everything on rails or on a city bus is on Level 3.
What a taxi from YOW costs
YOW does not publish a flat taxi fare to downtown Ottawa; taxis run on the meter, licensed by the City of Ottawa. The meter counts distance while the car moves and time when it crawls, so two numbers drive the fare:
- Distance. Parliament Hill is about 14 km (9 mi) from the terminal, roughly 18 minutes on a clear road. Kanata, Orléans and Gatineau are further.
- Traffic. On a weekday morning, 30 to 40 minutes to the Hill is realistic on the Airport Parkway and Bronson or Riverside. Those extra minutes are billed by time.
If your trip ends in Gatineau, remember that the return leg or a later local ride on the Quebec side will be in a Gatineau taxi charging Quebec's provincial rates. Our Ottawa taxi rates calculator walks through estimating a metered fare step by step, with the published Quebec numbers.
The taxi ride, compared with the other ways in
| YOW to Parliament Hill | Price | Wait at YOW | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi | Meter plus tip, in C$ | The queue, usually short in daytime | Walk-up arrivals, light luggage |
| Rideshare | App quote, moves with demand, in C$ | Request after bags, walk to pillars 12 and 13 | Flexible, price-conscious travellers |
| O-Train Line 4 plus connections | C$4.10 by Presto or tap, C$4.15 cash | Train frequency, then a change at South Keys | One traveller, small bag, daytime |
| OC Transpo route 105 | Same fare | Up to 30 minutes | Night arrivals on a budget |
| Elly8.net business sedan | US$105 fixed, all-in | None: chauffeur waiting inside arrivals | Late flights, meetings, fixed budgets |
| Elly8.net business SUV | US$140 fixed, all-in | None | Families, up to 6 people and 6 bags |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter | US$275 fixed, all-in | None | Groups and delegations, up to 12 |
Transit fares are from OC Transpo, which also lists a 90-minute transfer window, a C$12.25 daily cap and free travel for children 10 and under.
When the airport taxi is the right call
Fairness first: for many arrivals at YOW, the taxi is exactly what you need.
- Daytime arrivals with one or two bags. The queue moves, the meter to downtown is modest, and you are at the hotel quickly.
- Spontaneous plans. If you do not yet know which hotel, or your meeting moved, a taxi needs no booking.
- Wheelchair users who need an accessible vehicle now. The airport attendant can request a fully accessible taxi. If you prefer to book ahead, tell the Elly8.net desk what you need and we will confirm what the partner vehicle can do before you travel.
- Short trips to airport-area hotels. For a hotel a few minutes from the terminal, a meter is hard to beat.
When a pre-booked car wins
The late arrival. Flights that land near midnight, especially after a delay, arrive into a quieter terminal and a longer wait for whatever is still running. A booked chauffeur tracks the flight, adjusts to the real landing time and waits inside arrivals with a name board, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing.
Customs and slow bags. International and transborder arrivals take longer to clear. With a taxi, nothing starts until you reach the curb; with a booked car, the chauffeur is already watching your flight.
Families with small children. Taxis generally expect you to bring a child seat. An Elly8.net Business SUV at US$140 has the seat fitted before pickup, on request.
Groups and luggage. Four adults with full-size cases often need two taxis. One Business SUV takes up to six with six bags; an Executive Sprinter takes up to 12.
Delegations and VIPs. A minister's office or an embassy needs a confirmed car, a name at the door and discretion; see government and diplomatic transportation. For private aircraft, see private jet and FBO transfers.
A known budget. The price is fixed before you fly and charged in US dollars, with taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet included. Tolls and parking are billed at cost.

Where YOW arrivals usually go
Knowing your destination before you reach the rank makes the ride smoother, whichever option you choose.
Parliament Hill, the Château Laurier and the Rideau Centre. The classic run, about 14 km (9 mi). Visitors with a booked tour of Parliament should allow for security screening, which the Parliament of Canada visitor site asks you to plan for; a taxi or chauffeur can drop you at the visitor entrance.
Rogers Centre Ottawa. The convention centre on Colonel By Drive, beside the canal and the Rideau Centre, sits at the same distance as the Hill. On the first morning of a big congress, the drop-off lane fills with taxis and shuttles at once. Speakers and organisers often pre-book; see conference transportation.
Gatineau. Hotels and the Canadian Museum of History are across the river, so bridge traffic sets the time. One booked car covers both sides without a change of price.
Kanata. Technology offices and the Canadian Tire Centre are a longer west-end run on Highway 417. On an event evening, a pickup from Kanata back to the airport or downtown is harder to find than the ride out.
Airport-area hotels. For a hotel a few minutes from the terminal, the meter is short; also check whether your hotel runs a shuttle from pillars 13 to 15.
Winter arrivals
Ottawa winters are long and cold, and the YOW taxi queue is outside. In daylight with a short queue that is a minor point. After a delayed evening flight in January, with children and luggage, it is a bigger one. A booked chauffeur meets you inside, walks you straight to a warm car at the pre-arranged curb, and loads the cases while you settle the children. On a night when the queue is long and the wind is up, that difference is felt more than any price gap. If you plan to use the taxi rank in winter, keep a coat and gloves in your carry-on rather than your checked bag.
Going to the airport: taxi or booked car?
For departures, taxis and app rides drop off on Level 3. The question is less about the drop-off than about the pickup at your end: a 5 a.m. pickup in Orléans, Kanata or a Gatineau suburb depends on a car being free at that hour. An Elly8.net booking fixes the time and the price days ahead; the fare to the airport is the same as the fare from it, US$105 in a business sedan from Parliament Hill and the core. Other addresses are priced in the web booker.
What Elly8.net costs from YOW
- YOW and Parliament Hill, either direction: business sedan US$105, business SUV US$140, first class SUV US$170, first class sedan US$185, Executive Sprinter US$275.
- Round trip booked together: business sedan US$200, business SUV US$270, Executive Sprinter US$525.
- Need the car to stay? Hourly from US$110 in a business sedan, 3-hour minimum; see hourly chauffeur service.
Rides in Ottawa are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. The full price panel is on the Ottawa car service page. For a general comparison, see chauffeur vs taxi; for app rides by traveller type, Uber vs taxi vs private car in Ottawa.
Flying out of another city on the same trip? The desk also books Montreal and its airport, Kingston and Toronto.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a flat taxi fare from Ottawa airport?
The airport authority does not list a flat taxi fare to downtown Ottawa; YOW taxis are metered. A flat rate is available by pre-booking: an Elly8.net business sedan from the airport to Parliament Hill is US$105, fixed and all-in, including gratuity and meet and greet, and the same price applies in the other direction.
How long is the taxi ride from YOW to downtown Ottawa?
About 18 minutes on a clear road for the 14 km (9 mi) to Parliament Hill. On weekday mornings, 30 to 40 minutes is realistic, and snow or event closures add more. Because the meter counts slow minutes, the same ride costs more in traffic.
Are wheelchair-accessible taxis available at Ottawa airport?
The airport authority says fully accessible taxis are available on request; speak to the on-site attendant at the taxi queue outside the centre door on Level 1. Para Transpo, for registered users, picks up between pillars 9 and 10. For a pre-booked car, tell our desk your needs before travel.
Where do taxis drop off for departures?
Taxis drop off on Level 3, the Departures level. Pickups, including taxis, rideshare and pre-arranged cars, all happen on Level 1, Arrivals; loading is not permitted on Level 3.
What happens to a booked car if the flight is late?
Nothing changes on your side. Elly8.net tracks every airport pickup and moves the chauffeur to your actual landing time, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. Waiting well beyond the included time is billed at cost, and the desk will tell you before that starts.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go back to the original card.
