If you search for a Vancouver airport shuttle expecting a shared van that drops each passenger at their downtown hotel, you will find that YVR works differently. The airport's own transportation pages list the Canada Line train for downtown and Richmond, courtesy buses for airport hotels and car parks, and scheduled long-distance coaches to Whistler and Victoria. There is no airport-listed shared van to downtown hotels, because the train does that job in under half an hour.
So the real question is not "shuttle or car" but "train, hotel bus, coach, taxi, app ride or a pre-booked car". The Elly8.net reservations desk books YVR pickups every day, and this guide sets out the published numbers for each option, says plainly when the cheaper choice is the right one, and shows where a fixed Elly8.net fare from US$110 to downtown earns its place.
What counts as an airport shuttle at YVR?
YVR lists three shuttle-style services: courtesy buses to airport hotels, car parks and Airport South, boarded outside Departures Level 3; YVR Skylynx coaches to Whistler (via Squamish) and to Victoria (via the ferries), ticketed online or at a Domestic Arrivals kiosk; and the Canada Line train, which reaches downtown in under 30 minutes.
The YVR courtesy shuttles page explains that hotel and off-airport car rental buses pick up outside Departures Level 3, on the International side near U.S. check-in and outside the Domestic terminal. You call your hotel from the direct-dial phones on Departures Level 3 and wait for its bus. These buses serve the airport hotels on Sea Island and in Richmond, not downtown Vancouver.
The long distance buses page names YVR Skylynx as the operator of two daily routes direct from the airport: a Whistler express via Squamish and Creekside, and a Victoria service via the Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay ferry terminals. For downtown, YVR points travellers to the Canada Line, which runs from a station between the International and Domestic terminals.

The options side by side, YVR to downtown

The Canada Line. TransLink's fare table lists C$3.50 for one zone, C$5.10 for two zones and C$6.70 for three, and adds a C$6.50 YVR Airport AddFare to journeys that start at YVR-Airport, Sea Island Centre or Templeton stations. All trips after 6:30 p.m. on weekdays, at weekends and on statutory holidays are charged as one zone. YVR says the line reaches downtown in under 30 minutes and Richmond in 18, and that you can tap a contactless card at the gate. For one person staying near Waterfront, Vancouver City Centre or Yaletown-Roundhouse stations, it is the obvious answer. When the trains are not running, YVR lists the N10 NightBus to downtown or Richmond.
Taxi. YVR publishes flat taxi zone fares for trips from the airport, on a map updated October 11, 2024. The Canada Place/Downtown zone is C$46, Stanley Park C$48, Kitsilano/Broadway C$40 and the University of British Columbia C$46. Those fares already include a C$4.00 Passenger Load Charge, do not include a tip, and are governed by the Passenger Transportation Board of British Columbia. Taxi stands are on Level 2 of International and Domestic Arrivals.
Rideshare. Uber and Lyft are the authorised app services at YVR, with pickup areas on Level 2 of International and Domestic Arrivals and at the South Terminal. YVR's rideshare page says prices vary by provider, time of day and location, and asks passengers to collect bags before requesting a ride, because drivers wait in a holding area a short distance away.
When the train or a taxi is the smarter call
Be honest about your trip and the cheaper option often wins.
- One traveller, one roller bag, a downtown hotel near a station. Take the Canada Line. The fare is a fraction of any car, and the trains are frequent.
- Two people at an off-peak hour, going downtown. The C$46 taxi zone fare is fixed by the zone map, so the meter cannot run up on the bridge. It is good value for two.
- An overnight stop at an airport hotel. Call the hotel's courtesy bus from Departures Level 3. A car makes no sense for a ten-minute hop.
- Staying in Richmond. The North Richmond zone fare is C$25 and the Central Richmond zone C$31, and the Canada Line reaches Richmond in 18 minutes.
None of those travellers needs us, and we would rather say so than sell a car nobody needs.
When a door-to-door car wins
A pre-booked chauffeur earns its fare in a few clear situations.
Late arrivals. Long-haul flights from Asia and Europe often land in waves, and the taxi line and the app pickup area can both get busy at once. With an Elly8.net booking, the chauffeur tracks your flight, waits inside arrivals with a name board and works to the actual landing time, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. Nothing needs to be requested after a 12-hour flight.
Families and child seats. A taxi may not carry the right seat, and a train with two children, a stroller and four cases is hard work. Child seats are available on request when you book, fitted before pickup. A Business SUV at US$145 seats up to six with six bags.
Groups. Prices are per vehicle, never per person. An Executive Sprinter at US$290 seats up to 12 with 12 bags. As arithmetic for comparison only, that is about US$24 a head for a full group of 12, and everyone arrives together. Four taxis for the same group would each cost the zone fare plus tip, and you would have to coordinate four cars at the stand.
A meeting or a sailing. Cruise passengers heading to Canada Place and business travellers going straight to an office tower do not want to discover the queue at the stand. A fixed pickup time and a fixed price take the variables out.
Corporate billing. A corporate account puts every ride on a monthly invoice, with saved traveller profiles. That is easier to reconcile than a stack of taxi receipts. See corporate car service for how accounts work.
| Situation | Cheapest sensible option | When a pre-booked car is worth it |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, light bag, downtown hotel | Canada Line | Arrival after midnight or straight to a meeting |
| Couple, off-peak, downtown | Taxi zone fare | Need a guaranteed pickup or a First Class car |
| Family of four with child seats | Taxi if seats are not needed | Business SUV, seats fitted before arrival |
| Group of 8 to 12 with bags | Several taxis | Executive Sprinter, one vehicle, US$290 |
| Cruise embarkation day | Taxi or train with light bags | Ship schedule and a week of luggage |
YVR to Whistler: Skylynx coach or a private car?
This is where the word shuttle matters most at YVR. The Skylynx Whistler express runs direct from the airport and is sold online or at the Skylynx kiosk in Domestic Arrivals. YVR notes that the Whistler coaches have Wi-Fi, washrooms and extra legroom. For one skier with one bag on a daytime arrival, a seat on the coach is usually the cheapest way up the Sea-to-Sky Highway.
A private car is a different product. The Elly8.net fare from YVR to Whistler Village is US$370 in a Business Sedan, US$485 in a Business SUV and US$965 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed and per vehicle, as shown on our Whistler car service page. The road distance is about 135 km (84 mi), roughly 2 hours 20 minutes on a clear road. The car leaves when you land, stops where you ask, and drops at the hotel or chalet door rather than a central stop.
It tends to win for families with skis and child seats, groups who would otherwise buy many coach seats, and anyone landing after the last scheduled departure. In winter the vehicle must meet British Columbia's winter tire rules on the signed highway, and the desk checks road conditions before mountain departures. Our sister post on Seattle to Vancouver by private car covers the other long drive many YVR visitors make.
YVR to Victoria: coach and ferry, or a car each side
Skylynx also runs a Victoria service from YVR via the Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay ferry terminals. For a solo traveller that is simple: one ticket covers the coach and the crossing is part of the journey.
Elly8.net does not sell ferry seats. What we do is book the car at either end. A Vancouver car takes you from YVR or a downtown hotel to Tsawwassen, and a car on the island collects you at Swartz Bay or the airport; see Victoria car service for fixed fares on the island, which start at US$145 from Victoria International Airport (YYJ) to the Inner Harbour. Ferry-terminal transfers are quoted in the web booker, and the chauffeur times the pickup to the sailing you give us.
Groups: what YVR asks of shuttle and coach bookings
YVR has a group arrivals page that every wedding planner and tour leader should read. It recommends that larger groups coordinate with an approved commercial vehicle operator, and says only approved operators have access to the terminal curb for pickups. It suggests a pickup time 45 minutes to an hour after the flight's arrival time, basing the time on the latest flight when a group is spread across several arrivals, and having a greeter inside the terminal to gather everyone.
That advice matches how we plan larger YVR moves. Give us every flight number, and the desk sets the pickup time from the last arrival, holds the vehicle and keeps one contact with your greeter. For a wedding weekend with guests on many flights, our guide to Vancouver wedding limo timelines explains how a guest shuttle plan is built, and group transportation covers the general approach.
What the door-to-door fare includes
Elly8.net fares from YVR to downtown Vancouver are US$110 in a Business Sedan, US$145 in a Business SUV, US$180 in a First Class SUV, US$195 in a First Class Sedan and US$290 in an Executive Sprinter. The same fixed fare applies from downtown to YVR for departures. Each fare includes the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost.
Rides in Vancouver are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer.
Booking takes three steps: enter the pickup and drop-off with your flight number, choose the vehicle, and press Reserve now on a priced route or use the web booker for any other address, such as a North Shore home or a Richmond hotel. Confirmation arrives by email. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 72 hours or less is 10%, 48 hours or less is 50%, and 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100%, refunded to the original card.
For the wider argument, see chauffeur vs airport shuttle, chauffeur vs taxi and our airport transfers page. Every Vancouver price is on the Vancouver car service page, and nearby trips run to Seattle and Kelowna.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a shared shuttle from YVR to downtown Vancouver hotels?
YVR's transportation pages do not list a shared van service to downtown hotels. For downtown, the airport points to the Canada Line, which reaches the city in under 30 minutes. Courtesy shuttles serve airport hotels and car parks, and YVR Skylynx coaches run to Whistler and Victoria. For door-to-door service downtown, the choices are a taxi, an app ride or a pre-booked car.
How much is a taxi from YVR to downtown?
YVR's published zone fare from the airport to the Canada Place/Downtown zone is C$46, on the map updated October 11, 2024. It includes the C$4.00 Passenger Load Charge but not a tip. Trips to the airport are metered, and trips beyond the zone map use the meter plus the load charge.
What does the Canada Line cost from the airport?
A regular TransLink fare plus the C$6.50 YVR Airport AddFare. Downtown is a two-zone trip at C$5.10 by day on weekdays, and one zone at C$3.50 after 6:30 p.m., at weekends and on holidays. You can tap a contactless card at the gate.
How much is a private car from YVR to downtown Vancouver?
Elly8.net fares start at US$110 in a Business Sedan and run to US$290 in an Executive Sprinter for up to 12 passengers. Fares are fixed, all-in and per vehicle, with meet and greet inside arrivals, flight tracking and complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. The same fare applies for departures to YVR.
Is the Skylynx coach or a private car better for Whistler?
For one traveller with light bags arriving in daytime, the coach is usually cheaper. A private car, from US$370 in a Business Sedan to US$965 in an Executive Sprinter, suits families with child seats and ski bags, groups and late arrivals, and drops at your hotel door.
Can you meet a group arriving on several flights?
Yes. Send every flight number and the desk sets the pickup from the last arrival, as YVR recommends for groups. An Executive Sprinter seats 12 with 12 bags, and larger groups use several vehicles. A greeter inside the terminal helps gather everyone before the chauffeur arrives.
