Uber works well in Ottawa for a solo traveller making short, flexible trips: you see the price before you confirm, the car usually arrives within minutes in the core, and there is no tip to calculate at the curb. A metered taxi is the better pick when you are already standing at a rank or a hotel door, or when you need an accessible vehicle on request at the airport.
A pre-booked private car wins on a narrower but important set of trips: late arrivals, families with child seats, groups with luggage, fixed appointments and anything that has to be invoiced to a company. This guide from the Elly8.net desk walks through how each option works in Ottawa, then matches six traveller profiles to the ride that actually suits them.
Is Uber cheaper than a taxi in Ottawa?
Sometimes. Uber shows a price before you accept, and at quiet times it can undercut the meter; when demand is high, its price rises and a taxi meter can be cheaper. Neither publishes a fixed airport fare. A pre-booked Elly8.net business sedan from the airport to Parliament Hill is US$105, fixed and all-in.
The honest comparison is not a single number, because app prices are set by the platform in real time and are not published. What you can compare is behaviour. The app gives you certainty for one ride at the moment you book it. The taxi meter gives you a fair price for the distance and time you actually travel. A pre-booked car gives you a price days in advance, including the gratuity, and a named chauffeur who is already on the way when you land.
How Uber works in Ottawa
Ride-hailing apps in Ottawa follow the same pattern as in most North American cities. You set a destination, the app quotes a price for the vehicle tier you choose, and a nearby driver accepts. Larger vehicles and premium cars are offered as separate tiers, and their availability depends on how many such drivers are online near you at that moment.
Three things matter for visitors:
- Pickup pins. The app picks a pickup point; at busy places such as the Rideau Centre, the ByWard Market or an arena, the pin may be a short walk from where you are standing.
- Demand pricing. When many people request at once, the price rises and so does the wait. In Ottawa that means game nights, festival evenings, the first big snowfall and late nights in the Market.
- Luggage and seats. A standard car takes a couple of suitcases. Child seats are generally not supplied, so families travel with their own or choose another option.
Uber at Ottawa airport
At Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW), the airport authority sets out where every mode of transport meets passengers on its ground transportation page:
- Rideshare picks up and drops off at pillars 12 and 13, along the curb furthest from the terminal on Level 1, the Arrivals level.
- Taxis queue outside the centre door on Level 1, and fully accessible vehicles are available on request through the on-site attendant.
- Pre-arranged services, such as a luxury vehicle, also use pillars 12 and 13.
- Passenger loading is not permitted on Level 3, the Departures level.
The difference with a pre-booked chauffeur is the step before the curb. With an Elly8.net airport transfer, the chauffeur tracks the flight, waits inside the arrivals hall with a name board and walks you to the car. With an app, you request after you have your bags and then walk out to the pillars. On a quiet afternoon that takes minutes; after a late bank of arrivals, it can take longer. Our Ottawa airport taxi guide covers the airport in more detail.
Uber Black and premium tiers vs a booked chauffeur
Premium app tiers put you in a nicer car, but they are still matched on demand: whether one is near you when you land depends on the moment. A booked chauffeur is assigned in advance to your flight or your appointment, with a fixed price and the gratuity included. We set out the full trade-off in Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur, and the broader case in chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft.
Six Ottawa travellers, six right answers
1. The solo consultant with a day of meetings. Three short appointments in Centretown and a lunch in the Market: the app or a taxi is the sensible, cheapest choice. If the day becomes five stops including Gatineau and a Kanata office, an hourly car from US$110 an hour (3-hour minimum) keeps one car and one chauffeur waiting outside each meeting. See hourly chauffeur service.
2. The family landing at 11:30 p.m. Two adults, two children, four cases and one child under booster age. The app means two cars or an XL, plus your own child seat. A Business SUV from YOW to Parliament Hill is US$140, carries up to six people and six bags, and has the child seat fitted before pickup.
3. The visiting delegation of nine. Nine people and their luggage need one vehicle and one arrival time. An Executive Sprinter from YOW to the Hill is US$275 for the vehicle; as arithmetic only, that is about US$31 a person. Our government and diplomatic transportation page explains how matched sedans, SUVs and Sprinters run under one booking.
4. The couple going to a Senators game. The Canadian Tire Centre is in Kanata, about 25 km from downtown. An app ride out is easy; the ride back, with a full arena leaving at once, is the hard part. The evening out and event night package, from US$550 in a business sedan, covers the drive out, the wait and the return from an agreed pickup point. For two people on a budget, two app rides plus some patience is cheaper.
5. The budget traveller with a backpack. Take the train. OC Transpo's O-Train Line 4 runs from the airport station, with an adult fare of C$4.10 by Presto card or tap and children 10 and under riding free, per OC Transpo fares. You change at South Keys for the rest of the network. For more on that trade-off, see our Ottawa airport shuttle vs private car guide.
6. The executive assistant booking for a CEO. The trip needs a confirmed car, a name at the door, an itinerary that may shift by the hour and a monthly invoice. That is a corporate account with a booked chauffeur, not an app on someone else's phone. See corporate car service.
Where each option works best around the city
The core: Hill, Centretown and the Rideau Centre. Distances are short and traffic is the main cost. Apps and taxis both do this well in daytime. The exception is a day when ceremonies or demonstrations close Wellington Street, when a driver who knows the open curbs matters more than the price.
The ByWard Market at night. The ByWard Market is where dinners and nights out land, and its narrow streets and patios make curbside pickups awkward. At closing time, app prices and waits rise together. A booked car can hold nearby and meet you at an agreed corner.
Kanata and the west end. Technology offices and the Canadian Tire Centre are a highway run from downtown. Getting there by app is easy; getting back after an event or a late meeting is less so, because fewer cars are waiting out west.
Gatineau. Across the river, taxis run on Quebec's provincial rates and app rides follow Quebec's rule that the maximum price must be shown in writing before the driver is told. A booked Elly8.net car treats Ottawa and Gatineau as one area, so a day that crosses the river several times stays on one booking.
The VIA Rail station. Ottawa's train station is at 200 Tremblay Road, east of downtown, per VIA Rail. A delayed evening train is a good case for a booked pickup that follows the arrival; see train station transfers.

Questions to ask before you choose
- How many people and bags? Over three people with full-size cases, a single SUV usually beats two cars.
- What time do you land or leave? Late night and event exits favour a booked car; mid-afternoon favours the app.
- Is anyone under booster age? If you are not carrying a seat, the booked car is the simple answer.
- Does the trip have a fixed start time? A hearing, a ceremony or a flight out of YOW at 6 a.m. is worth a confirmed booking.
- Who is paying? Company travel is easier on one invoice than on a stack of app receipts.
If the answers point to the app or a taxi, use them; they are good services. If they point to a booked car, the price is fixed before you go. Our companion guide, Ottawa taxi or rideshare, covers what slows each one down around the city.

Frequently asked questions
Where do Uber drivers pick up at Ottawa airport?
At pillars 12 and 13 on Level 1, the Arrivals level, along the curb furthest from the terminal, according to the airport authority. Loading is not permitted on Level 3, Departures. An Elly8.net chauffeur meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board instead, then walks you out to the pre-arranged curb.
Is Uber Black available in Ottawa?
Premium app tiers depend on which drivers are online near you at the moment you request, so availability varies. If you need a premium car at a specific time, a pre-booked chauffeur is assigned in advance. An Elly8.net first class sedan from the airport to Parliament Hill is US$185, fixed, with gratuity included.
Can a booked car be cheaper than Uber?
For groups, often yes, because the price is per vehicle. As arithmetic only, five people in a US$140 Business SUV from the airport pay US$28 each. For one person on a short daytime trip, the app or a taxi is usually cheaper, and we would tell you so.
Do you supply child seats in Ottawa?
Yes, on request. Give each child's age and weight when you book and the correct seats are fitted before pickup. App rides and taxis generally expect families to bring their own seat, which is hard to manage after a long flight.
What is the cancellation policy for a booked car?
Free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go to the original card. The same terms apply to every vehicle class.
Can my company be billed monthly?
Yes. A corporate account gives monthly invoicing, saved traveller profiles and cost-centre references, with one 24/7 desk for Ottawa and every other Elly8.net city. Travel agents and hotels can open their own accounts through the partner programme.
