Uber operates in Zurich, and its city pages list everyday options such as UberX and the larger UberXL. For a short ride in the city at a quiet hour, an app ride is a reasonable choice. The price, though, is set by the app at the moment you book and changes with demand, so the same trip can cost noticeably more on a wet Friday evening or when a concert lets out than it did that morning.
A pre-booked Elly8.net car works the other way round: the price is fixed when you book, from US$135 in a business sedan for Zürich Airport to the Bahnhofstrasse, and the chauffeur tracks your flight or waits outside your meeting. This guide explains how app rides fit Zurich's rules, what drives surge pricing, how the airport handles pickups, and where each option makes sense, including the times when the tram or a taxi beats both.
Can you use Uber in Zurich?
Yes. Uber operates in Zurich with options such as UberX and UberXL. Prices are calculated by the app and change with demand, so they are not published as a fixed tariff. The canton's 2024 law regulates taxis and pre-booked limousine services, and Zurich Airport's ground transport pages do not list a dedicated app pickup zone.
As with any app, the number of nearby drivers at the moment you press the button decides how long you wait and, often, how much you pay.
The rules behind every ride in Zurich
Since 1 January 2024, a cantonal law on passenger transport by taxis and limousines, the PTLG, has applied across the canton of Zurich, and the canton rather than each town is responsible for both. It draws a line between two kinds of service.
Taxis. According to the canton's taxi services page, anyone who regularly and commercially carries taxi passengers in the canton needs a cantonal taxi vehicle permit and a cantonal taxi ID, and the fees for the taxi ID include a criminal record check. Taxis carry a cantonal roof lamp and can wait at public ranks.
Limousine services. The canton's limousine services page says that anyone running or offering limousine services must, before the trip, register the driver, the vehicle and its keeper, and display a cantonal limousine sticker on the inside of the windscreen when the driver, keeper or provider is based in the canton. The canton's question-and-answer sheet notes that limousine drivers may agree the price freely with the customer.
What that means for you as a passenger is reassuring: whichever kind of car you get into, there is a registration behind it. If you want to check, a taxi shows its lamp; a non-taxi car from a Zurich-based operator should carry the cantonal sticker on the windscreen.
How surge pricing works, in plain terms
Ride-hailing apps price each trip at the moment of booking, based on the route and on the balance between people requesting rides and drivers nearby. When demand jumps faster than drivers can arrive, the app raises prices to pull more drivers in and to ration the cars that are there. The app shows the price, or a higher multiplier, before you confirm.
In Zurich, the moments that tend to push demand up are easy to predict:
- Rain and cold evenings, when people who would have walked or taken the tram want a car.
- Friday and Saturday nights, especially around closing time in the old town and Zurich West.
- Events, when thousands of people leave a venue at once, such as a concert at the Hallenstadion in Oerlikon or a match at the Letzigrund.
- Festival weeks, such as the Zurich Film Festival, which usually runs from late September into early October.
- Early mornings, when fewer drivers are online and many travellers want the airport.
A fixed pre-booked price does not move with any of these. That is the main difference, and it is why companies, families and anyone on a set budget tend to book ahead.
App rides at Zurich Airport
Zurich Airport's own pages describe trains, trams, official Airport Taxis and limousine services, but do not list a dedicated pickup zone for app rides. Pickups are arranged through the app itself. The arrivals curbside lanes are charged: according to the airport's picking-up page, a stop of up to 5 minutes costs CHF 4 and up to 30 minutes CHF 27, and regular commercial use of the inner curbside lane requires a permit.
For comparison, the official Airport Taxis wait along the inner curbside lanes of Arrival 1 and 2 and charge around CHF 65 to the city centre, according to the airport. The train is the bargain: Zurich Tourism lists a CHF 7 single and 10 to 15 minutes to the main station. Our Zurich Airport to city center guide compares all four options in detail.
An Elly8.net chauffeur meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, after passport control and baggage reclaim. The flight is tracked, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, so a late landing does not turn into a cancelled ride or a new price.
Uber, taxi, tram or a pre-booked car
| Option | Price | Price known in advance | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tram or S-Bahn | CHF 7 airport single, CHF 14 for 24 hours | Yes | Solo travellers with light bags |
| City taxi | Meter, typically CHF 6 plus CHF 3.80 per km | Estimate only | Short hops, any hour |
| Official Airport Taxi | around CHF 65 to the city centre | Approximately | Walk-up airport arrivals |
| App ride | Set by the app, varies with demand | At booking, then subject to the app's terms | Short city trips at quiet times |
| Elly8.net business sedan | US$135 ZRH to the Bahnhofstrasse, fixed per vehicle | Yes, weeks ahead | Executives, fixed budgets, early flights |
| Elly8.net Business SUV | US$180 ZRH to the Bahnhofstrasse | Yes | Families, six seats and six bags |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter | US$355 ZRH to the Bahnhofstrasse | Yes | Groups up to twelve with twelve bags |
We do not quote an app price because none is published; any number would be invented. The taxi benchmark comes from Zurich Tourism's airport guide, which says most taxis charge a basic fare of CHF 6 and CHF 3.80 per kilometre.
When an app ride is the right call
Be fair to the app. For one or two people going a short distance in the city, at a normal hour, with a bag or two, an app ride is quick to arrange and usually reasonably priced. If you are already at a tram stop and the tram goes your way, take the tram: it is cheaper than any car and in central Zurich often just as fast. Our Zurich taxi guide covers the cab option for the same kind of trip. For those quick hops, the honest advice is to use whichever is closest and cheapest at that moment.
When the pre-booked alternative wins
Arrivals from North America. After an overnight flight, the last thing you want is to manage an app, a pickup point and a price that has just gone up. A chauffeur with your name is already in the arrivals hall.
Child seats. Ask for child or booster seats when you book and give the ages; the partner fits them before pickup. If you are relying on an app, check in advance whether a car with seats is actually available.
Luggage and groups. A standard car takes a couple of large cases. A Business SUV or van seats six with six bags, and an Executive Sprinter twelve with twelve bags, in one vehicle on one price. See the fleet and group transportation.
Meeting days. Hourly service from US$100 an hour in a business sedan, 3-hour minimum, keeps one car and one chauffeur with you all day, waiting outside between meetings around the Paradeplatz. The corporate roadshow day costs from US$900 in a business sedan to US$1,800 in a Sprinter. See hourly chauffeur and corporate car service.
Big nights. The evening out and event night package, from US$500 in a business sedan to US$1,000 in a Sprinter, means the car is outside when the performance ends, rather than an app showing a surge. See event transportation.
Leaving town. Lucerne, the Rhine Falls, Davos and St. Moritz are long rides for an app. Our guides to Zurich day trips and Zurich to Lucerne cover those routes and the fixed full-day price, from US$740 in a business sedan.
Company travel. A corporate account gives fixed fares, monthly invoicing, one booking contact for many travellers and NDAs on request, with the same terms in Geneva, Frankfurt and our North American cities.
When plans change
Travel rarely runs exactly to plan, and the two models handle change differently. With an app, a ride is matched to a driver at the moment you request it. If your flight is two hours late, there is nothing to change in advance; you simply request a car when you land, at whatever the price is then.
A pre-booked chauffeur is assigned ahead and follows the flight. If it lands late, the pickup moves with it, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. If you miss a connection in another hub, message the 24/7 desk with the new flight. If the whole trip moves, Elly8.net's cancellation terms are published and simple: free more than 72 hours before pickup, then 10%, 50% and 100% as the pickup gets closer. Knowing those rules in advance is part of what a fixed booking buys. For travellers who expense their trips, a booking confirmed by email at a fixed US$ price, or a monthly invoice on a corporate account, is also simpler to reconcile than a string of separate app receipts.
Uber Black and a chauffeur: not the same thing
People often compare a premium app tier with a chauffeur. Both put you in a nicer car with a professional driver. The differences are the ones that matter on a business trip: a booked chauffeur is assigned in advance, tracks the flight, waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, holds the price regardless of demand, and can stay with you by the hour. We set out the comparison in Uber Black vs a chauffeur and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft.

Frequently asked questions
Is Uber available in Zurich?
Yes. Uber operates in Zurich, with options such as UberX and UberXL. Wait times depend on how many drivers are nearby when you book. Prices are calculated by the app at booking and change with demand, so they are not published as a fixed tariff.
Why is Uber more expensive at some times in Zurich?
App prices rise when demand outruns the drivers nearby: rainy evenings, weekend nights, the end of concerts and matches, festival weeks and early mornings. A pre-booked Elly8.net car is priced when you book, from US$135 in a business sedan for the airport run, and does not change.
Where do app rides pick up at Zurich Airport?
The airport's ground transport pages do not list a dedicated app pickup zone, so pickups are arranged through the app. The arrivals curbside lanes are charged, from CHF 4 for up to 5 minutes. A pre-booked chauffeur meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board.
Are app drivers regulated in Zurich?
Since 1 January 2024, the canton's PTLG regulates taxis and limousine services. Taxis need a cantonal taxi ID and vehicle permit; limousine services must register drivers, vehicles and keepers, and cars from canton-based operators display a windscreen sticker. Check any car's markings before you get in.
Is a taxi or Uber cheaper from Zurich Airport?
The train is cheapest, at CHF 7 for an adult single. Official Airport Taxis charge around CHF 65 to the city centre. App prices vary with demand. A fixed Elly8.net business sedan costs US$135 per vehicle, including meet and greet and standard gratuity.
Can I book a car by the hour instead of several app rides?
Yes. Elly8.net hourly service costs US$100 an hour in a business sedan, US$125 in a Business SUV and US$200 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. The same chauffeur waits between stops, which suits meeting days, shopping on the Bahnhofstrasse and evenings out.
