Yes, you can open the Uber app in Santorini and request a ride. What arrives is not a private Uber car of the kind you know from the United States or Canada. Uber's own Santorini taxi page explains that every ride requested there is operated by a fully licensed taxi driver. In other words, the app is a new way of calling the island's existing taxis, and the island does not have many of them.
That single fact shapes everything else in this guide. When taxis are free, the app is convenient: you set the pickup and destination in English, see an estimate and pay by card. When they are not, at a busy flight bank, a ferry arrival at Athinios or the end of a sunset in Oia, the app cannot conjure a car that is not there. For those moments, a pre-booked chauffeur at a fixed price, from US$135 per vehicle for the airport to Fira and Oia, is the dependable option.
Does Uber work in Santorini?
Yes, through Uber Taxi. Uber says every Santorini ride requested in the app is operated by a licensed taxi driver, with requests possible 24/7, card or PayPal payment and vehicles for up to four or larger ones for groups. Availability depends on how many island taxis are free at that moment, which in summer can be very few.
Uber's page lists two sizes: taxis for up to four riders and larger vehicles for six to nine. Its FAQ says taxis requested through the app support up to six passengers and suggests trying a different ride option if no taxi is available when you request. You can add card payment or PayPal to your account, tip in the app or in cash, and change the destination or add a stop during the ride.
The Municipality of Thira is candid about the underlying supply. It says taxis on the island are limited in number, waits can be long, especially in peak season, and fares are fixed for common routes because island taxis do not use meters; it advises confirming the price before the ride. That is the market the Uber app plugs into.

How Uber pricing works on the island
There is no published Uber fare table for Santorini, so we will not invent one. What Uber does publish is how its pricing works. The Uber Taxi page promises an upfront fare estimate before you request, and notes that the price can change if you add stops, change the destination, make significant changes to the route or duration, or pass a toll not included in the estimate; wait-time fees can also apply if you take time to reach the car.
Uber's page for Santorini airport adds that the cost of a ride depends on the type of ride, the length and duration of the trip, tolls, city fees and current demand for rides. That last item is what most North American travellers know as surge: when demand is high and few cars are free, the price shown in the app can rise. On an island where the taxi fleet is small and demand arrives in waves, with flights landing together, ferries docking and the whole island watching the same sunset, those waves are exactly when you are most likely to need a car.
The same page describes Uber Reserve, which lets you schedule a ride up to 90 days ahead and lock in the price, with free cancellation until one hour before pickup. If Reserve is offered for your trip in the app, it helps with the price. It does not change the vehicle, which is still an island taxi, and it depends on a driver accepting the job.
At Santorini airport
Santorini International Airport (JTR) is open around the clock, according to the airport's taxi page, which places the taxi stand in front of the departures building. Uber's airport page says you receive step-by-step directions in the app to meet your driver after landing. The public bus also serves the terminal on the route between Fira, Kamari and Monolithos.
The airport is small, and several flights often land within a short window in summer. When that happens, the taxi stand and the app draw on the same few cars, and the queue can be the longest part of the journey. A pre-booked Elly8.net chauffeur works differently: the driver tracks your flight number, waits in arrivals with a name board, and loads the bags, and complimentary waiting after a tracked landing covers a slow baggage belt. The fixed fare from JTR to Fira and Oia is from US$135 in a business sedan, US$180 in a business SUV, US$220 in a First Class SUV, US$240 in a First Class Sedan and US$355 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle, and the same price applies on the way back. See airport transfers and meet and greet.
Oia is about 19 km (12 mi) and roughly 22 minutes from the airport on a clear road. If you are connecting from Athens, give us the number of the flight that lands on Santorini; if you miss the connection, the 24/7 desk moves the pickup.
Athinios ferry port and the cliff road
Ferries dock at Athinios, below the caldera cliff, and the only road up is a switchback. When a large ferry arrives, everyone leaves at once: coaches, buses, rental cars and every taxi that made it down. The municipality lists Athinios as one of the places to find taxis, but on a busy afternoon, requesting a car in the app from the quay means competing with a boatload of passengers for the same handful of vehicles.
The KTEL bus is the budget answer, and an honest one for a light traveller: the KTEL Santorini fare table lists €2.70 between Fira and the port. With suitcases, children or a hotel in Oia, a chauffeur already waiting at the quay is the calmer start. There is no fixed price-list fare for Athinios, so enter it in the web booker for an instant fixed price; send the ferry operator and arrival time and the desk adjusts if the boat runs late. Read more on cruise and ferry port transfers.
Oia at sunset, and getting back
Oia's sunset is the island's daily rush hour. The road north fills before sunset, parking fills, and when the sun goes down, thousands of people want to leave at the same moment. That is the worst possible time to open a ride-hailing app on an island with few taxis. The KTEL fare from Fira to Oia is €2.20, and the buses run, but they fill too.
The pre-booked alternative is to set the return before you go. The evening out and event night package, from US$450 in a business sedan to US$900 in an Executive Sprinter, keeps the car and chauffeur with you through sunset and dinner. Many guests have the chauffeur drop them early, agree a meeting point away from the main crowd, and leave after the first wave of traffic has cleared. The chauffeur follows local rules on everything inside the vehicle. Our guide to a Santorini private tour by car explains how to fit Oia into a full island day.
Late nights
The app accepts requests at any hour, but late at night the question is again how many taxis are working. KTEL's fare table includes a 25% night supplement from 00:30 to 05:00, which brings the Fira to Oia fare to €2.80, but check the timetable for the last bus on your route before relying on it. For a dinner in Imerovigli or Oia with a hotel at the other end of the island, a car booked for a set time removes the guesswork.
Uber, taxi, bus or a pre-booked car
| Option | What you pay | How you get it | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uber app | Upfront estimate; can rise with demand | Licensed island taxi, if one is free | Short hops at quiet times, paying by card |
| Island taxi | Fixed fares on common routes, no meter | Stand at the airport, Athinios or Fira, or by phone | Short trips when the rank has cars |
| KTEL bus | €2.20 Fira to the airport or Oia; €2.70 to Athinios | Timetabled routes from Fira | One traveller with a light bag |
| Elly8.net chauffeur | From US$135 per vehicle, fixed in US$ | Pre-booked, meet and greet, flight tracking | Families, groups, ferries, sunsets, late arrivals |
When the app is the right call
Be fair to it: the Uber app is useful in Santorini. If you are two people staying in Fira, with an afternoon free and a wish to see Pyrgos or a beach, opening the app on a quiet weekday in May may get you a taxi in minutes, with the destination entered in English and the fare paid by card. It is also handy for a short ride you did not plan, such as a change of restaurant. And for one traveller with a carry-on, the bus at €2.20 is cheaper than anything else on this page.
When pre-booking wins
Pre-book when timing is fixed and supply is tight. That means the airport arrival in July and August, any ferry at Athinios, a cruise call with an all-aboard time, the return from Oia after sunset, a wedding or celebration with guests at several hotels, and any family needing child seats. It also means groups: an Executive Sprinter seats up to twelve with room for twelve bags, so a family reunion or a group of friends travels in one vehicle rather than three taxis, each found separately. The price is per vehicle and fixed before you travel, in US dollars.
A pre-booked car also changes what happens if plans slip. Flights are tracked, a delayed ferry is followed by the desk, and a missed connection in Athens means a message to the 24/7 desk rather than a new search for a taxi. For a general comparison, see chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft and Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur.
Uber Reserve and a pre-booked chauffeur are not the same thing
Reserve, where it is offered, schedules a request in advance and locks the price. A pre-booked chauffeur through Elly8.net is a different product: a named booking with a licensed, commercially insured local partner, a vehicle class you choose (Business Sedan, Business SUV, First Class Sedan, First Class SUV or Executive Sprinter), meet and greet inside arrivals, flight tracking, complimentary waiting after a tracked landing and a fixed, all-in fare that includes taxes and standard gratuity. Rides in Santorini are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.

Frequently asked questions
Is there Uber X or Uber Black in Santorini?
Uber's Santorini page describes Uber Taxi: every ride requested in the app is operated by a licensed taxi driver. Check the app on the day for what is offered, but plan on an island taxi rather than a private Uber car. A pre-booked chauffeur is the way to choose a specific vehicle class.
Does Uber surge in Santorini?
Uber says ride costs depend partly on current demand, and shows an upfront estimate before you request. On a small island, demand peaks at flight banks, ferry arrivals and sunset, which is when prices and waits tend to rise. Reserve, where offered, can lock a price in advance.
Can you get an Uber from Santorini airport?
You can request one; Uber's airport page gives in-app directions to meet the driver. The car is an island taxi drawn from the same small fleet as the taxi stand outside departures, so waits can be long when several flights land together. A pre-booked car from US$135 is waiting at arrivals.
How many people fit in an Uber in Santorini?
Uber lists taxis for up to four riders and larger vehicles for six to nine, and its FAQ says app taxis support up to six passengers. For a group with luggage, an Elly8.net Business SUV seats up to six with six bags, and an Executive Sprinter seats up to twelve.
Is the bus a good alternative?
For one traveller with a light bag, yes. KTEL lists €2.20 from Fira to the airport and to Oia, and €2.70 to Athinios, with a 25% supplement from 00:30 to 05:00. Buses run from Fira and fill at busy times, so allow extra time in summer.
What does a pre-booked car include?
A fixed, all-in fare in US dollars, per vehicle, with the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. The chauffeur tracks your flight and waits in arrivals with a name board. Parking is billed at cost, and child seats are available on request.
