On Santorini, the honest answer to "taxi, Uber or private car" changes with the trip. The island's taxis do not run on meters, charge fixed fares on common routes and are limited in number, according to the municipality. The Uber app calls those same licensed taxis. The KTEL bus costs €2.20 for most routes out of Fira. And a pre-booked private car, at a fixed price agreed before you travel, starts at US$135 per vehicle from the airport to Fira and Oia through Elly8.net.
None of these is right every time. The bus is excellent value for one person with a small bag. A taxi or the app is fine for a short hop at a quiet hour. A private car earns its price when timing is fixed, supply is tight or the party is large: ferries, flight banks, sunsets, families and groups. Below, trip by trip, is which to use and why.
Which is better in Santorini: taxi, Uber or a private car?
For one traveller with light luggage, the KTEL bus at €2.20 is the best value, and a taxi or the Uber app suits short trips at quiet times. A pre-booked private car is better for airport arrivals in summer, ferries at Athinios, Oia at sunset, families with child seats and groups, at a fixed price from US$135 per vehicle.
The reason is supply. The Municipality of Thira says taxis are available at the airport, at Athinios port and in Fira's main square, or by phone, but that they are limited and waits can be long in peak season. It also notes that fares are fixed for common routes and that taxis do not use meters, so confirm the price before you set off. Uber's Santorini page confirms that the app connects you with licensed taxi drivers. On a busy evening, the taxi stand and the app are drawing on the same small pool of cars.

The options at a glance
| Option | Price | How it works | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KTEL bus | €2.20 most routes from Fira; €2.70 to Athinios and Perissa | Timetabled routes, all starting in Fira | Cheapest by far | Changes in Fira; crowded at peak times |
| Island taxi | Fixed fares on common routes, no meter | Stands at the airport, Athinios and Fira, or by phone | Door to door | Few cars; long waits in summer |
| Uber app (Uber Taxi) | Upfront estimate, can vary with demand | Requests a licensed island taxi | English interface, card payment | Same cars as the taxi stand |
| Cable car | €10 one way, €5 per bag | Old Port to Fira in about three minutes | The way up from cruise tenders | Queues on busy cruise days |
| Elly8.net private car | From US$135 per vehicle, fixed in US$ | Pre-booked, meet and greet, flight tracking | Certainty, space, waiting included | More than one light traveller needs |
Bus fares are from the KTEL Santorini fare table, last updated in May 2026, which also lists a 25% night supplement from 00:30 to 05:00. The cable car fares come from the Santorini Cable Car price list.
Trip 1: arriving at Santorini airport
Solo traveller or a couple with carry-ons, staying in Fira. The bus serves the terminal on the route via Kamari and Monolithos for €2.20, and a taxi from the stand in front of the departures building is a short ride when the queue is short. Either is reasonable.
A family, a group, or anyone staying in Oia or Imerovigli. Pre-book. Several flights often land close together in summer, and the stand and the app empty quickly. The chauffeur tracks your flight, waits in arrivals with a name board, and the fare is fixed: from US$135 in a business sedan, US$180 in a business SUV, US$220 in a First Class SUV, US$240 in a First Class Sedan and US$355 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. Oia is about 19 km (12 mi) from the airport, roughly 22 minutes on a clear road. See airport transfers.
Arriving late at night. The airport is open around the clock, but taxis and buses thin out late. A tracked, pre-booked car removes the uncertainty after a long day of connections.
Trip 2: Athinios ferry port
Athinios sits at the bottom of the caldera cliff, and when a big ferry docks, a convoy of coaches, rental cars and taxis climbs the same switchback road. Taxis are available at the port, but the first ones go quickly and the app has nothing extra to offer. The bus is €2.70 between Fira and the port.
Our verdict: a light traveller heading to Fira can take the bus with a clear conscience. Anyone with luggage heading to a cliff-side hotel in Oia, Imerovigli or Firostefani is better off with a car waiting at the quay. There is no fixed price-list fare for Athinios, so enter it in the web booker for an instant fixed quote, and send the ferry operator and arrival time so the desk can follow any delay. Leaving by ferry, aim to reach the port an hour before departure. See cruise and ferry port transfers.
Trip 3: a cruise day from the Old Port
No car can reach the Old Port below Fira, so no taxi, app or chauffeur can collect you there. The way up is the cable car, which takes about three minutes and costs €10 one way plus €5 per piece of luggage, the long staircase, or the traditional donkey path. The question is what happens at the top.
With a short call and a fixed all-aboard time, a car by the hour waiting in Fira is the efficient choice: Oia, a winery and a viewpoint in a few hours, with a return planned around the cable car queue. Elly8.net hourly rates are US$90 in a business sedan, US$115 in a business SUV, US$135 in a First Class SUV, US$145 in a First Class Sedan and US$180 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. If you would rather stroll Fira and take the bus to Oia, that is perfectly possible on a quieter day.
Trip 4: Fira to Oia, and Oia at sunset
During the day, the bus between Fira and Oia (11.8 km on KTEL's table, €2.20) or a taxi are both sensible. The problem is the evening. The municipality warns that parking in Oia and Fira fills quickly, and after sunset thousands of people want to leave the village at the same moment. Taxis are scarce and the app competes for them.
If sunset in Oia is the plan, set the return before you go. The evening out and event night package, from US$450 in a business sedan, US$575 in a business SUV and US$900 in an Executive Sprinter, keeps the car with you through sunset and dinner, so you can leave after the first wave of traffic. Our guide to Uber in Santorini explains in more detail why the app struggles at that hour.
Trip 5: beaches and the south
The black-sand beaches of the east and south are easy by bus from Fira: Kamari is 7.3 km and €2.20 on the KTEL table, and Perissa is 20.4 km and €2.70. For a beach afternoon with a towel and a book, take the bus. A taxi makes sense for a one-way hop to a restaurant when the bus timing does not suit.
A car becomes useful when the beach is one stop among several: Akrotiri's archaeological site, a lighthouse at the island's tip, a beach and a winery in one day, all on different bus routes that each start in Fira. Our Santorini private tour by car shows how those combine.
Trip 6: wineries
Several of the island's wineries are within a few kilometres of each other in the south, around Pyrgos, Megalochori and Episkopi Gonia. A taxi between each tasting means a new wait and a new fare every time, and nobody in a tasting party should be driving a rental car. A chauffeur by the hour, or a full day from US$665 in a business sedan to US$1,325 in an Executive Sprinter, waits outside each stop. The Santorini wine tour guide suggests routes. See also wine tours.
Trip 7: departure day
A morning flight from Oia is the one trip where the stakes are highest and the options thinnest: early taxis are few and the bus starts in Fira. Book the departure with the arrival, as a round trip from US$260 in a business sedan to US$675 in a Sprinter, and the car is assigned before the season gets busy. The same fixed price applies to the airport in either direction. We usually suggest reaching the terminal two hours before a flight to Athens or within Europe, and three hours before a long-haul connection.
Trip 8: weddings, celebrations and groups
Santorini's caldera venues host weddings and celebrations through the season, and they are where taxis and buses fall shortest. Guests are spread across hotels in Fira, Imerovigli and Oia, the ceremony is timed to the light, and twenty people cannot each wait for a taxi on a lane outside a venue. One desk holding the guest list is simpler: an Executive Sprinter, seating up to twelve with twelve bags, carries guests where the road allows, a First Class Sedan carries the couple, and departures are timed to the programme rather than to whichever cars happen to be free.
As arithmetic for comparison only, a US$355 Sprinter airport transfer shared by ten guests works out at US$35.50 each, but the price is per vehicle and charged as one booking. See group transportation and wedding transportation.
Paying and tipping, for North American visitors
With an island taxi hailed at a stand, agree the fare before you set off, as the municipality advises, and carry some euros in case the driver prefers cash. Through the Uber app, the card or PayPal account on your profile is charged, and Uber says you can tip in the app or in cash. On the bus, buy the ticket as the timetable and conductor direct, with small change ready. An Elly8.net booking is paid in advance by card in US dollars, with standard gratuity already included, so there is nothing to settle with the chauffeur at the end of the ride.
What about renting a car or an ATV?
The municipality notes that rental agencies operate at the airport, at Athinios and in the main towns, that roads can be narrow, and that parking in Oia and Fira fills quickly; it suggests a compact car or ATV for high season. For confident drivers who want independence for a week, a rental can work. It is a poor fit for arrival day with luggage, for a wine day, or for an evening in Oia, where parking is the problem. Our chauffeur vs car rental guide sets out the trade-off.
The decision in one table
| Your situation | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One traveller, light bag, staying in Fira | KTEL bus | €2.20 and frequent in season |
| Couple, quiet afternoon, short hop | Taxi or the Uber app | Door to door when cars are free |
| Family or group arriving in July or August | Pre-booked car | Waiting at arrivals, room for bags and child seats |
| Ferry arrival at Athinios with luggage | Pre-booked car | No scramble on the quay |
| Cruise tender to the Old Port | Cable car, then a car by the hour | Cars cannot reach the Old Port |
| Sunset in Oia, dinner after | Evening package | Return fixed before the rush |
| Winery day | Chauffeur by the hour or full day | Nobody drives after tastings |
What a private car includes
Every Elly8.net fare is per vehicle, fixed in US dollars and all-in: chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet, with parking billed at cost. Frequently asked questions
Do Santorini taxis use meters?
No. The Municipality of Thira says island taxis do not use meters and that fares are fixed for common routes, so confirm the price with the driver before you set off. Taxis are found at the airport, at Athinios port and in Fira's main square, or can be called by phone.
Is Uber cheaper than a taxi in Santorini?
The Uber app calls the same licensed island taxis, so it is not a cheaper fleet. It shows an upfront estimate and lets you pay by card, and Uber says prices partly depend on current demand. At busy times, availability is the bigger issue than price.
How much is the bus from Fira to Oia?
€2.20 on the KTEL fare table, for a route of 11.8 km. The same fare covers Fira to the airport and Fira to Kamari, while Fira to Athinios port and to Perissa cost €2.70. A 25% supplement applies from 00:30 to 05:00.
Can a taxi pick us up from a cruise tender?
No vehicle can reach the Old Port below Fira. Take the cable car, about three minutes and €10 one way plus €5 per bag, or the staircase. Your taxi or chauffeur meets you at the top, in Fira, so allow for the queue at the lower station on busy cruise days.
When is a private car worth it in Santorini?
When timing is fixed and taxis are scarce: summer airport arrivals, ferries at Athinios, a return from Oia after sunset, winery days, and families or groups. A pre-booked Elly8.net car starts at US$135 per vehicle from the airport to Fira and Oia.
Can we book the departure at the same time?
Yes. The round trip between the airport and Fira or Oia costs from US$260 in a business sedan to US$675 in an Executive Sprinter, and the one-way fare is the same in either direction. Booking both legs secures the early departure car before the island gets busy.
