An Ottawa taxi fare is the meter's starting amount, plus a charge for the distance driven, plus a charge for time spent stopped or crawling in traffic, plus the tip you add. The City of Ottawa licenses the taxis and their meters, and the rates differ by provincial rules once you cross the river: a taxi licensed in Gatineau charges Quebec's published provincial rates.
This guide works like a calculator. It shows how to estimate a metered fare from distance and traffic, gives worked examples with the official numbers that are published, and then compares the result with fixed, per-vehicle prices on Elly8.net. The short version: for one person on a short trip, the meter is usually cheaper; for groups, multi-stop days and late or event-night trips, a flat rate often wins.
How do you calculate a taxi fare in Ottawa?
Add four parts: the starting amount shown when the meter begins, the distance charge for each kilometre, the time charge for minutes spent stopped or slow in traffic, and your tip. Ask the driver or dispatcher for an estimate for your route. Elly8.net prices, by contrast, are fixed per vehicle before you travel, from US$105 airport to Parliament Hill.
Meters do not charge distance and time at once. Below a certain speed the meter counts time; above it, it counts distance. That is why the same 6 km trip costs more at 5 p.m. on a weekday than at 10 a.m. on a Sunday: the kilometres are identical, but more of the trip is billed by the minute.
Step 1: measure the distance and the slow minutes
Use any map app to get the driving distance, then look at the traffic estimate. The gap between the clear-road time and the traffic time is a fair guess at the minutes the meter will count as waiting.
Some useful reference distances, by road:
- Ottawa airport (YOW) to Parliament Hill: about 14 km (9 mi), about 18 minutes on a clear road. On a weekday morning, 30 to 40 minutes is realistic.
- Downtown to the Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata: about 25 km (16 mi) west.
- Parliament Hill to the VIA Rail station at 200 Tremblay Road: a short run east of downtown.
- Downtown Ottawa to a Gatineau hotel or the Canadian Museum of History: across a bridge, where the approach is usually the slow part.
Step 2: apply the rate for the side of the river you start on
Ottawa side. Taxis are metered and licensed by the City of Ottawa. The meter rates are set locally and are shown in the vehicle; ask for an estimate when you book or before you set off if the trip is long.
Gatineau side. Quebec publishes its taxi rates in full. According to the Commission des transports du Québec, in force since September 12, 2022, taxes included:
| Quebec rate | Starting amount | Per km with a passenger | Waiting, per hour (per minute) | Added fee per trip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day: trips starting 5:00 a.m. to 10:59 p.m. | C$4.10 | C$2.05 | C$46.20 (C$0.77) | C$1.05 |
| Night: trips starting 11:00 p.m. to 4:59 a.m. | C$4.70 | C$2.35 | C$53.40 (C$0.89) | C$1.05 |
The C$1.05 is a C$0.90 fee plus tax that funds compensation for former taxi permit holders. Quebec also requires app rides to show the maximum price in writing, and get your consent, before the driver is told about the request.
Step 3: work the examples
These are arithmetic illustrations using the published Quebec rates, before any tip.
- 5 km by day, moving freely: C$4.10 + (5 x C$2.05) + C$1.05 = C$15.40.
- The same 5 km with 8 minutes stuck at a bridge approach: add 8 x C$0.77 = C$6.16, for about C$21.56.
- 12 km at night, moving freely: C$4.70 + (12 x C$2.35) + C$1.05 = C$33.95.
- 12 km at night with 10 slow minutes: add 10 x C$0.89 = C$8.90, for about C$42.85.
The lesson carries across the river: the distance part is predictable, the time part is not. In Ottawa traffic, a rush-hour crossing, a closed street on a ceremony day or a snow-narrowed lane adds minutes, and minutes add money.
Step 4: add the people and the bags
A calculator that stops at one fare misses the most common reason flat rates win: group size. A standard taxi takes up to four passengers in theory, but four adults with full-size cases rarely fit. Two taxis double the fare.
Elly8.net prices are per vehicle, never per person. Here is the arithmetic for the airport run to Parliament Hill, divided by a full vehicle for comparison only:
| Elly8.net vehicle | Fixed price, YOW to Parliament Hill | Seats and bags | Per person if full (arithmetic only) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business sedan | US$105 | up to 3, 2 bags | US$35 |
| Business SUV | US$140 | up to 6, 6 bags | about US$23 |
| First class SUV | US$170 | up to 6, 6 bags | about US$28 |
| First class sedan | US$185 | up to 3, 2 bags | about US$62 |
| Executive Sprinter | US$275 | up to 12, 12 bags | about US$23 |
The fare is the same fixed price in the other direction, from your hotel to the airport, and it already includes taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet inside arrivals. There is nothing to add at the curb except tolls or parking, which are billed at cost.
Three Ottawa trips, calculated
A couple from the airport to a ByWard Market hotel, mid-afternoon. Two people, two cases, a quiet arrival. A metered taxi from the queue outside the centre door on Level 1 is the natural choice, and on a clear road the run to the core is short. The Elly8.net business sedan at US$105 buys a chauffeur inside arrivals, flight tracking and a known price. If those matter less than the money, take the taxi.
A family of five landing at 11:45 p.m. in February. Five people do not fit one standard taxi with luggage, so the realistic comparison is two taxis, each on its own meter, each with a tip, both waiting in the cold queue, and no child seat unless you brought one. A Business SUV at US$140 takes all five with their cases, has the seat fitted before pickup and is already there when you clear the baggage hall.
A sales team of eight with four appointments between Kanata, downtown and Gatineau. That is several separate taxis per leg, a new search at every stop and waiting time on any meter you hold. An Executive Sprinter by the hour is US$220 an hour; a corporate roadshow day is US$1,980 for the vehicle, about US$248 a person as arithmetic, with the chauffeur waiting outside every meeting and one invoice. See corporate car service and roadshow chauffeur.
When a flat-rate car is cheaper
Groups of four or more. If the alternative is two taxis, one Business SUV at US$140 for up to six people usually comes out ahead once both meters, both tips and the wait are counted.
Several stops in one day. Five metered rides between the Hill, a Gatineau office, a Kanata technology park and a dinner in the ByWard Market each start a new meter and each require finding a new car. An hourly chauffeur costs a fixed US$110 an hour in a business sedan, 3-hour minimum, so US$330 for three hours, and the car waits outside each stop. See hourly chauffeur service.
Waiting built in. A taxi asked to wait keeps the meter running. A booked hourly car or an event package already includes the waiting.
Event nights. The evening out and event night package, from US$550 in a business sedan to US$1,100 in an Executive Sprinter, covers a game, a show or a dinner and the ride home. For a group of 12 in a Sprinter, that is about US$92 each as arithmetic, with no surge and no search at the exit.
A round trip. Booked together, YOW and Parliament Hill both ways is US$200 in a business sedan and US$525 in an Executive Sprinter.
When the meter or transit is cheaper
Be clear about the other side of the calculation.
- One person, short trip, quiet hours. A short metered ride across the core will cost less than any pre-booked car.
- Public transit. OC Transpo's adult fare is C$4.10 with a Presto card or a tap of your bank card, C$4.15 in cash, with a 90-minute transfer window; daily fares cap at C$12.25, and children 10 and under ride free, per OC Transpo fares. From the airport, O-Train Line 4 runs from 6:00 a.m. to midnight and bus route 105 runs 24 hours, every 30 minutes, according to the Ottawa International Airport Authority.
- Flexible plans. If you might stay an extra hour, or might walk, the meter costs nothing until you use it.
Departures: run the calculation in reverse
Heading to YOW for an early flight is the same arithmetic in the other direction, with one difference: timing risk. A taxi ordered at 4:30 a.m. or an app request at that hour depends on who is awake and nearby. The Elly8.net fare to the airport is the same fixed price as the fare from it, US$105 in a business sedan, booked for the minute you choose. Taxis drop off on Level 3, Departures, per the airport authority.
One more variable: currency
Elly8.net charges in US dollars. Ottawa taxi meters, Gatineau taxi meters, app fares and OC Transpo are in Canadian dollars. To compare fairly, convert the Canadian figure at your card's exchange rate on the day, and remember that the Elly8.net price already includes the gratuity and taxes.

Rides in Ottawa are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Every Ottawa route and package is on the Ottawa car service page. For the general trade-offs, see chauffeur vs taxi and how much a limo costs. Companies that book often can open a corporate account with monthly invoicing.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a flat taxi rate from Ottawa airport to downtown?
The airport authority does not publish a flat taxi fare to downtown Ottawa; taxis queue outside the centre door on Level 1 and run on the meter. A flat rate is available by pre-booking: an Elly8.net business sedan from YOW to Parliament Hill is US$105, fixed and all-in, in either direction.
Why does the same trip cost more at rush hour?
Because meters switch to charging by time when the car is stopped or slow. The distance stays the same, but more of the trip is billed by the minute. On Quebec's published day rate that is C$0.77 a minute, so ten slow minutes add C$7.70 on the Gatineau side before any tip.
Are Gatineau taxis priced differently from Ottawa taxis?
Yes. Gatineau is in Quebec, where the Commission des transports du Québec sets the rates: C$4.10 to start, C$2.05 per kilometre and C$0.77 per waiting minute by day, plus a C$1.05 fee per trip. Ottawa taxis are licensed and metered under City of Ottawa rules.
How should a group split an Elly8.net fare?
Divide the vehicle price by the number of riders; the price itself is per vehicle, not per person. As arithmetic only, six people in a US$140 Business SUV from the airport pay about US$23 each, with gratuity and taxes already included. One card pays for the booking.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go back to the original card. Waiting, tolls and parking beyond what is included are billed at cost.
