Is Uber Black worth it? On a short, spontaneous trip at an ordinary hour, when you want a nicer car than the standard tier and the quote on screen looks reasonable, often yes. On a trip that matters, at a busy hour, with a group, children or a client, it is often not the best value, because its price is set at the moment you request and it cannot be fixed in advance. And on plenty of trips, neither Uber Black nor a chauffeur is worth it, because a regulated taxi or a train does the job for much less.
Rather than argue in general, this guide judges six real trips in Washington, DC, Boston, Nashville and Miami. Each one uses official taxi and transit figures where they exist, the fixed Elly8.net price for the same trip, and a plain description of how Uber Black would be priced, since its fares are not published. The verdicts are not all in our favour, and they should not be.
Is Uber Black worth it?
Uber Black is worth it for short, spontaneous trips when you want a premium car now and the quote is fair. It is weaker value at peak times, for groups, families needing car seats and client pickups, where a fixed pre-booked price with meet and greet usually wins. For one light traveller, a taxi or train often beats both.
Three questions decide it for any trip. Can the trip be planned ahead? Does the arrival time matter to someone else? And is there a regulated taxi or train that does the job well? If the answers are no, no and no, Uber Black is a fine choice. If any answer is yes, read on.

What you are actually paying for with Uber Black
It helps to be clear about the product. Uber Black is a premium app tier built around black sedans, with Uber Black SUV as the larger version. You pay more than the standard tier for a nicer vehicle and, at some airports, a closer pickup point. The price is an upfront quote at the moment of request, made up of distance, expected time, the tier premium and the demand at that moment, with tolls shown in the breakdown and a tip on top if you choose. Our guide to Uber Black cost takes that fare apart line by line.
A pre-booked chauffeur is a different product: a fixed price per vehicle agreed in advance, a flight-tracked pickup with the chauffeur waiting inside arrivals, complimentary waiting after a tracked landing, child seats on request, Sprinters for groups, and standard gratuity already included.
Trip 1: one traveller, Reagan National to downtown DC, mid-afternoon
The facts. DCA sits about 4 miles (6 km) from downtown, roughly 8 minutes on a clear road. The airport publishes approximate taxi fares of about US$19 to the US Capitol, US$23 to Union Station and US$22 to the Convention Center, before a US$3 airport fee, on its ground transportation page. Metro's Blue and Yellow lines serve the airport, with fares from US$2.25 on WMATA's fare page. An Elly8.net business sedan is US$125.
Verdict: neither. Take Metro or a taxi. Uber Black would buy a nicer car for eight minutes at a premium; our sedan would buy meet and greet you do not need. If you are alone with a carry-on at 3 p.m., the cheapest regulated option is the right one.
Trip 2: a client landing at Dulles at 9 p.m.
The facts. Dulles is about 30 miles (48 km) from downtown, roughly 54 minutes on a clear road. The airport's taxi concession publishes an estimate of about US$65 to US$73 to Washington, DC on its estimated fares page; those taxis are metered. Uber Black would be quoted when the client requests, after landing. An Elly8.net business sedan is US$255, and a First Class Sedan US$450, fixed.
Verdict: the chauffeur. The cost of a client waiting at a curb, or opening an app to an evening quote after a long flight, is higher than the fare difference. A named chauffeur inside arrivals, a tracked flight and a fixed price on a corporate account is what the job needs. If the traveller were a colleague happy to queue for a taxi, the Flyer estimate would be the honest budget choice.
Trip 3: two people, Logan to Back Bay, Tuesday afternoon
The facts. Back Bay is about 5 miles (9 km) from Logan, roughly 13 minutes on a clear road. The MBTA says on its Logan Airport page that Silver Line service from the airport is always free. App pickups for Terminals A, C and E are in the Central Parking Garage, according to Massport. An Elly8.net business sedan is US$130.
Verdict: Uber Black is reasonable, the Silver Line is better value. For two people with modest bags, a premium app ride at a quiet hour is a fair purchase if the quote looks sensible, and the walk to the garage is short. If budget matters, the free Silver Line to South Station is hard to argue with. The fixed car earns its price here only if you want to be met inside arrivals or are carrying more than a sedan holds.
Trip 4: five friends, a Friday night on Broadway in Nashville
The facts. A Friday night downtown means a ride to dinner, a few hours on Broadway, and a ride back to the hotel at the same time as everyone else. Five people need an SUV tier in an app, and the return request is made at the busiest moment of the night. The Elly8.net evening out and event night package is five hours with the car waiting: US$600 in a Business SUV that seats six, US$725 in a First Class SUV, per vehicle, gratuity included.
Verdict: the chauffeur, for the return trip alone. The outbound ride at 7 p.m. could easily be an app ride. The problem is 1 a.m., when the quote and the wait are both at their worst and the group may not fit one premium car. One booked SUV, waiting at an agreed pickup point, removes that. As arithmetic only, US$600 shared by five is US$120 each for the whole evening. See the Nashville car service page and hourly chauffeur service.
Trip 5: a family of five landing at Miami during Art Week
The facts. Art Basel Miami Beach takes place in December, and the week around it brings collectors, galleries and parties to Miami Beach at the same time. MIA publishes its taxi meter: US$2.95 for the first sixth of a mile, a sliding per-mile rate, a US$2.00 airport origination fee and a US$15 minimum, and SUV or van taxis add a 30 percent surcharge, on its taxi and ride app page. On the published meter, the 15 miles to Miami Beach come to roughly US$55 before waiting, tolls and tip. An Elly8.net Business SUV, seating six with six bags, is US$235 with child seats on request.
Verdict: the chauffeur. Five people, luggage and two car seats rule out a standard sedan from any provider. A larger app tier at a peak week is the most expensive version of the app. The fixed SUV, with the seats fitted and the chauffeur inside arrivals, is the calm choice. If the same family arrived on a quiet weekday with no car seats needed, an SUV taxi on the meter would deserve a serious look. The Miami car service page lists every class.
Trip 6: a last-minute meeting across town
The facts. A meeting moves at short notice and you need to be across the city in 25 minutes, in a car where you can take a call. There is no time to book anything.
Verdict: Uber Black. This is exactly what an on-demand premium tier is for. A pre-booked chauffeur cannot help if you did not know you needed one, and a taxi may not be at the door. If this happens every week, though, an hourly booking or a corporate account that holds a car for the day becomes the better plan.
The six verdicts at a glance

The costs that never appear on a receipt
Price is only one column. Three other costs decide whether Uber Black is worth it, and none of them shows up on the fare.
Time waiting for a match. At a quiet hour, a premium car may be minutes away. At a busy one, a premium car is not necessarily any closer than a standard one, and the wait can stretch just when you can least afford it.
The walk to the pickup point. Some airports send app rides to garages or remote lots. Premium tiers sometimes get a closer spot, but a chauffeur inside arrivals is closer still.
The risk to a fixed appointment. A wedding ceremony, a board meeting, a show curtain or a departing flight does not move because the car was late. When a missed time costs more than any fare, the value of a fixed, pre-assigned booking goes up sharply.
A simple rule of thumb
Use Uber Black when the trip is short, spontaneous and only matters to you. Use a regulated taxi or the train when you are travelling light and the published fare is low. Book a fixed price when the trip can be planned and matters to someone else, when the group outgrows a sedan, or when the hour is one everybody else wants too. The longer category comparison is on Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur, and if you are asking about the ride out to catch a flight, read how much is an Uber to the airport.
How a fixed booking works
Enter the pickup and drop-off, with a flight number for airport pickups, choose the vehicle and reserve; confirmation arrives by email. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 72 hours or less costs 10%; 48 hours or less 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%. In Washington, Boston, Nashville and Miami, rides are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Frequently asked questions
Is Uber Black worth the extra money?
For short, spontaneous trips when you want a premium car and the quote is reasonable, it can be. For planned trips that matter to someone else, peak-hour rides, groups and families with car seats, a fixed pre-booked price with meet and greet is usually better value. For one light traveller, a taxi or train often beats both.
Is Uber Black better than a pre-booked chauffeur?
They solve different problems. Uber Black is on demand and priced at the moment you request. A pre-booked chauffeur is planned, fixed per vehicle in advance, flight-tracked, met inside arrivals, and includes standard gratuity. If you cannot plan the trip, Uber Black wins; if you can, the fixed booking usually does.
Is Uber Black more expensive than a taxi?
Generally it is a premium tier priced above the standard app tier, and its quote moves with demand, while a taxi runs on a regulated meter or a published flat fare. At Reagan National, for example, the airport publishes approximate taxi fares of about US$19 to US$23 to central destinations plus a US$3 fee.
When is a taxi better than both Uber Black and a chauffeur?
When you are one or two people with light bags, the trip is short, and a regulated fare is published. Short airport runs such as Reagan National to downtown DC are a good example. A taxi or the train is the honest recommendation there.
Does Uber Black include the tip?
No. App fares do not include a tip; the app offers the option after the ride. Elly8.net prices include standard gratuity, so add the tip to the Uber Black quote before you compare.
Can Uber Black carry a family with car seats?
App vehicles rarely carry the right child seats, and five people with luggage need a larger tier. An Elly8.net Business SUV seats six with six bags, and child seats are available on request and fitted before pickup when you give ages and weights at booking.
