How much an Uber to the airport costs is decided by the app at the moment you request it. The upfront price reflects the distance, the expected time on the road, the vehicle tier and how many other people want a ride right then. A ride from Back Bay to Logan at 2 p.m. on a Wednesday and the same ride at 5 a.m. on the Monday after a holiday weekend are different prices, and the second one may also be a different wait.
That is the real difference between a ride from the airport and a ride to it. On arrival, a late car costs you some minutes. On departure, a late car can cost you the flight. This guide explains how app fares for departures behave, what US airports publish about where app cars drop you off, the official fares you can use as a benchmark, and when a pre-booked car at a fixed price, the same in either direction, is the better choice.
How much is an Uber to the airport?
There is no published Uber fare to any airport. The app quotes an upfront price when you request, based on distance, expected time, tier and demand, and early-morning departure peaks can push it up. Benchmarks help: a Denver taxi from the airport downtown is a published US$72.04 flat rate, and an Elly8.net sedan from Back Bay to Logan is a fixed US$130.
Because rideshare companies do not publish route prices, the honest way to estimate is to open the app a day or two ahead and look at the quote for the same time of day, then treat it as a guide, not a promise. The fare you get is the fare at the moment you actually request.
Why departure rides are priced and timed differently
Three things make the ride out to the airport its own problem.
The early bank. Many first flights of the day leave between 6 and 8 a.m. That puts a lot of airport requests into a short window, when fewer drivers are on the road. Demand pricing and longer waits are both more likely then.
You cannot wait out a surge. On the way home from dinner, you can have another coffee and request again in twenty minutes. Before a flight, you request when you need to leave, at whatever the price is.
Traffic is part of the fare and the risk. The app's estimate includes expected time. A slow morning on the highway raises the quote and eats into your margin at check-in at the same time.
A pre-booked car turns those three variables into one fixed number agreed in advance. Elly8.net airport fares are the same price in either direction, so the ride out costs exactly what the ride in costs.
Where app cars drop you off at five US airports
It is worth knowing where an app car can legally stop, because at some airports it is not the departures curb.
- Boston Logan. Massport's ride-app page places ride-app pickup and drop-off for Terminals A, C and E in the Central Parking Garage, and for Terminal B on Level 2 (Departures) of the Terminal B Parking Garage. With bags and children, that is a walk through the garage before check-in.
- San Francisco (SFO). App drop-offs at the domestic terminals are curbside on the Departures levels, and the airport encourages passengers to request Arrivals level or garage drop-offs to avoid Departures traffic at peak times, according to SFO's ride-app page.
- Seattle-Tacoma (SEA). App rides drop at the terminal on the airport drives, and at peak times the driver may use the Arrival or Departure drive to avoid congestion, per the Port of Seattle. If you land on the baggage claim level, an elevator takes you up to ticketing.
- Los Angeles (LAX). LAX-it is for pickups only. Los Angeles World Airports confirms on its LAX-it page that taxis and app rides still take departing guests directly to the terminals.
- Denver (DEN). App pickups are on Island 5 of Level 5 on either side of Jeppesen Terminal, according to Denver International Airport. Check the drop-off side for your airline before you leave, because Jeppesen Terminal has an east and a west side.
A chauffeur drops you at the departures level of your terminal, and the desk confirms the right side of the building for your airline when you book.
Benchmarks you can check before you request
Rideshare prices are not published, but plenty of other ground transport is. Here is what the airports and transit agencies publish for six common city-to-airport runs, next to the fixed Elly8.net price, which is the same in either direction.
| Route | Transit (official fare) | Taxi benchmark (official source) | Elly8.net fixed price, per vehicle, either direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Back Bay to Boston Logan, about 5 mi (9 km) | MBTA; the Silver Line is free from the airport | Metered, set by the city | US$130 business sedan to US$340 Executive Sprinter |
| The Loop to O'Hare, about 22 mi (35 km) | CTA Blue Line; a regular ride is US$2.50, trips starting at O'Hare US$5 | Average O'Hare to downtown taxi about US$50 | US$215 business sedan to US$560 Executive Sprinter |
| The Loop to Midway, about 13 mi (21 km) | CTA Orange Line, regular fare | Midway to downtown about US$35 to US$40 | US$160 business sedan to US$420 Executive Sprinter |
| LoDo to Denver International, about 25 mi (40 km) | RTD A Line, US$10 Airport Day Pass | Airport to downtown taxi flat rate US$72.04, access fee included | US$225 business sedan to US$585 Executive Sprinter |
| Downtown Seattle to SEA, about 15 mi (24 km) | Link light rail US$3.00 | Metered; US$20 minimum from the airport | US$170 business sedan to US$445 Executive Sprinter |
| Midtown Atlanta to ATL, about 12 mi (20 km) | MARTA US$2.50 | Set at the stand by zone and passengers | US$150 business sedan to US$390 Executive Sprinter |
Sources: MBTA Logan Airport, CTA airports and CTA fares, the O'Hare taxi page, DEN taxi rates, RTD fares, Sound Transit fares and MARTA fares. Several of the taxi figures are published for the ride from the airport; they are still a useful yardstick for the same distance in the other direction.
If an app quote for your departure is close to the taxi benchmark, it is a fair price. If it is well above it at 5 a.m., that is demand pricing, and a fixed booking made the day before would have avoided it.
When the app is the sensible choice for a departure
We would not book a chauffeur for every airport run, and neither should you. The app or the train makes sense when:
- You are one person with a carry-on, leaving at an ordinary hour with plenty of margin.
- The airport is close. Back Bay to Logan is about 5 miles (9 km); a short trip limits how far demand pricing can move the fare.
- A train goes nearly door to door and you have the time: the RTD A Line from Union Station, the Link from downtown Seattle, MARTA from Midtown.
- Your flight time could change and you prefer to request only when you know it.
- You are travelling light on a weekday afternoon, the quote on screen is close to the published taxi benchmark, and nobody is waiting for you at the other end.
When a booked car is the better departure
- The first flight of the day. A car reserved for 4:45 a.m. is assigned in advance; you are not hoping a driver is awake when you open the app.
- Families and car seats. Child seats are available on request and fitted before pickup. An app car rarely carries the right seat.
- Groups and luggage. An Elly8.net Business SUV seats six with six bags; an Executive Sprinter seats 12 with 12 bags. One vehicle replaces two or three app cars that may not arrive together.
- A fixed budget. For a company, a corporate car service account with monthly invoicing replaces a stack of variable app receipts.
- Peak travel days. Holiday Mondays, the morning after a convention closes, and storm days are when app prices and waits both rise.
Leaving from a hotel: the doorman, the app or a booked car
Most visitors start the airport run from a hotel, and that changes the calculation in small but real ways.
The taxi stand at the door. Many downtown hotels have taxis waiting or a doorman who can whistle one up. For one or two people at an ordinary hour, that is quick and the meter is regulated. It is also the option most exposed to traffic, because the meter runs on time as well as distance.
The app from the lobby. Convenient, but the pickup point at a busy hotel can be a crowded driveway or a side street, and at checkout time on a convention's last morning, dozens of guests request at once. That is the moment the quote climbs and the wait stretches.
A booked car. The chauffeur arrives at the time you set, loads the bags while you settle the bill, and the price was fixed when you reserved. For a client, a family or a group with luggage, it removes the one part of the trip home that can go wrong before you even reach the airport.
If you are at a hotel for a conference, ask the desk about a single booking for several colleagues on the same flight: one Executive Sprinter at one fixed price instead of five app requests in the lobby. Hotels that book for guests can use Elly8.net hotel accounts.
Booking both directions together
Because airport fares are the same either way, many travellers book the ride out and the ride home in one go. Round trips booked together are on the price lists: O'Hare to the Loop and back is US$410 in a business sedan, and Denver International to LoDo and back is US$430. The return is flight-tracked, with the chauffeur waiting inside arrivals with a name board and complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. Dividing the fare across a group
Elly8.net prices are per vehicle, never per person. As arithmetic for comparison only: a US$295 Business SUV from LoDo to Denver International, shared by five colleagues with skis, is US$59 each, and a US$390 Executive Sprinter from Midtown Atlanta to ATL, shared by ten conference attendees, is US$39 each. The booking itself is for the vehicle, with one confirmation and one receipt.
How booking a departure works
- Enter the pickup address, the airport and your flight number on the city page or the web booker.
- Choose the pickup time. The desk can suggest one for your airport, terminal and time of day.
- Choose the vehicle and reserve. Confirmation arrives by email.
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 72 hours or less costs 10%; 48 hours or less 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%. Rides in these cities are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. The airport transfers page has the detail, and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft compares the categories.
Frequently asked questions
How much is an Uber to the airport?
Uber does not publish airport fares. The app quotes an upfront price when you request, based on distance, expected time, the tier and demand. Check a quote for the same time of day in advance as a guide, and compare it with published benchmarks such as the US$72.04 Denver airport taxi flat rate or a fixed Elly8.net fare.
Is an Uber to the airport more expensive early in the morning?
It can be. Many first flights leave in a short early-morning window when fewer drivers are working, so demand pricing and longer waits are both more likely. A pre-booked car reserved the day before has a fixed price and an assigned pickup time.
Where does an Uber drop you off at Boston Logan?
Massport places ride-app pickup and drop-off for Terminals A, C and E in the Central Parking Garage, and for Terminal B on Level 2 of the Terminal B Parking Garage. A pre-booked chauffeur drops you at the departures level of your terminal.
Is the Elly8.net price to the airport the same as from the airport?
Yes. Every one-way airport fare on Elly8.net is the same fixed price in either direction. Back Bay to Logan is US$130 in a business sedan, the same as Logan to Back Bay, with taxes and standard gratuity included. Tolls and parking are billed at cost.
How early should you book a car to the airport?
As early as your plans allow. Booking more than 72 hours ahead keeps the free cancellation window open, and early-morning slots on peak days are the first to fill. Include your flight number so the desk can confirm the right terminal and side of the building.
