Airport taxi cost is one of the few ground transport prices you can often check before you land. Many airports and cities publish a flat fare, a zone fare or an official estimate for the trip to the centre, from US$20 to downtown Phoenix to US$72.04 to downtown Denver, C$62 to downtown Edmonton, €55 to central Rome and a £70 to £120 range from Heathrow to Central London. Those are real, regulated numbers, and for one or two travellers with light bags they are usually the cheapest door-to-door option.
What the headline fare leaves out is just as important: per-passenger charges above a certain group size, night rates, airport pickup fees, tolls and the tip. This guide sets out the published fares at 14 airports in the United States, Canada and Europe, explains the surcharges, and compares each one fairly with a fixed, pre-booked car, which wins on some trips and clearly loses on others.
How much does an airport taxi cost?
It depends on the airport, and many publish the answer. Official figures include a US$20 flat rate from Phoenix Sky Harbor to downtown, US$32 from PHL to Center City, US$72.04 from Denver International to downtown, C$62 from Edmonton and €55 from Fiumicino to central Rome. Tips, and sometimes passenger or night surcharges, are extra.
Where an airport does not publish a flat fare, the taxi runs on a regulated meter and the airport may publish an estimate instead, such as the average of about US$50 from O'Hare to downtown Chicago. A meter means traffic changes the final number, which is why the same airport run can cost noticeably more at rush hour than late in the evening, even with the same taxi company.
Three ways airports price a taxi
Flat fare. One price from the airport to a defined area, whatever the traffic. Phoenix, Philadelphia, Tampa, New Orleans, Denver, Edmonton, Rome, Athens and Geneva all publish one for the centre.
Zone fare. A set of flat fares by destination zone, as Denver does for downtown, the Denver Tech Center and Boulder.
Meter with an estimate. The taxi runs on the regulated meter and the airport or city publishes a typical range. Chicago, Washington Dulles, Miami and London Heathrow work this way.
On top of any of these, some airports add a fee for a taxi pickup at the terminal. At Denver, the US$72.04 downtown flat rate already includes the airport access fee, while metered trips add a US$6.04 access fee. At Heathrow, London taxis add £1.60 for journeys that start from an airport rank.

The surcharges that sit on top of the headline fare
Passengers. Some flat fares are priced for one or two people. In Philadelphia, each extra passenger over 12 adds US$1. In New Orleans, the US$36 fare covers up to two passengers, and three or more pay US$15 each, so four people pay US$60.
Time of night. Athens charges €40 by day and €55 between midnight and 05:00. A late arrival changes the fare even though the road is emptier.
Airport pickup fees. Denver adds a US$6.04 access fee to metered trips, Miami adds a US$2.00 origination fee, and Heathrow taxis add £1.60 from the rank.
Vehicle size. At MIA, SUV and van taxis carry a 30 percent surcharge on the meter.
Tolls and the tip. Tolls are added where a route uses them, and tips are not included in North American taxi fares. Our tipping guide covers what is customary.
Canada: flat rates at the long-haul airports
Two Canadian airports with long runs into town publish especially clear numbers. Edmonton International sits about 32 km (20 mi) south of downtown, roughly 35 minutes on a clear road, and the airport sets a C$62 taxi flat rate and a C$71 limo flat rate to downtown, with taxis and limos loading curbside outside Door 9 on the Arrivals level. Halifax Stanfield is about 34 km (21 mi) from downtown, and its fare sheet for local airport car services lists C$68.00, including HST, to the Halifax peninsula zone, with higher fares to zones further out. Both are fair prices for a long drive, and for one or two people they are hard to beat. Elly8.net prices for the same runs are US$155 from YEG and US$165 from YHZ in a business sedan, charged in US dollars; see the Halifax and Edmonton pages for every class.
Europe: flat fares are common, with time rules
European airports often fix the taxi fare to the centre. In Rome, Roma Mobilità sets €55 per car from Fiumicino and €40 from Ciampino to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, supplements included. Athens fixes €40 by day and €55 at night. Geneva publishes flat fares by area on the airport's taxi page: CHF 25 near the airport, CHF 35 to the international organisations, and CHF 50 or CHF 60 to the city centre depending on the bank. London is the exception: black cabs run on the meter, and Transport for London's tariffs change with the time of day, with Tariff 1 on weekdays from 05:00 to 20:00, Tariff 2 on weekday evenings and weekend days, and Tariff 3 every night from 22:00 and on public holidays. Its published range from Heathrow to Central London is £70 to £120.
For visitors, the practical point is that the flat fares in Rome, Athens and Geneva are good value for a couple, while London's meter makes a fixed price more attractive when the M4 is slow. The London page compares the Heathrow Express and the Elizabeth line as well.
The same routes with a fixed, pre-booked car
Here is the fair comparison for six of those routes, with the fixed Elly8.net price per vehicle. Remember that the Elly8.net price already includes taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet inside arrivals, and is the same price in either direction, to or from the airport.
| Route | Taxi (official) | Elly8.net Business Sedan (3 seats, 2 bags) | Elly8.net Executive Sprinter (12 seats, 12 bags) | Better for one or two light travellers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PHX to downtown Phoenix | US$20 flat | US$115 | US$300 | Taxi |
| TPA to downtown Tampa | US$40 flat | US$120 | US$315 | Taxi |
| MSY to the French Quarter | US$36 for two; US$15 each for 3+ | US$170 | US$445 | Taxi |
| DEN to LoDo and Union Station | US$72.04 flat | US$225 | US$585 | Taxi, or the US$10 A Line |
| YEG to downtown Edmonton | C$62 flat | US$155 | US$405 | Taxi |
| FCO to Rome's historic centre | €55 flat | US$180 | US$470 | Taxi, or the train |
The last column is deliberately blunt. For one or two people with light bags, at an ordinary hour, the published taxi fare is the better value on every one of these routes, and we would book it ourselves. The full panels are on the Phoenix, Tampa, New Orleans, Denver, Edmonton and Rome pages.
When the fixed car is worth more than the taxi
The taxi wins on price for small parties. The fixed car wins on a different set of things.
Groups too big for one taxi. Eight people with luggage need two or three taxis from the rank, each with its own fare and tip, arriving separately. One Executive Sprinter carries 12 with 12 bags. As arithmetic only, the US$445 Sprinter from MSY shared by eight is about US$56 each; eight people in taxis at the US$15 per person rate would be US$120 before tips, so for New Orleans the taxis still cost less, but in two or three cars. At Denver, eight people in two taxis at the downtown flat rate would be US$144.08 plus tips, against US$585 for the Sprinter. Taxis are cheaper; the Sprinter keeps the group and the luggage together. Be clear-eyed about which matters more to you.
Arrival certainty. A long taxi line after several flights land, a midnight arrival, a delayed flight: none of these changes a flight-tracked booking, which includes complimentary waiting after a tracked landing.
Meet and greet. The chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board and helps with bags; the taxi waits at the rank outside.
Child seats and specific vehicles. Child seats are available on request and fitted before pickup. A business traveller who needs an SUV, or a client who should be met in a First Class Sedan, gets exactly that.
Destinations outside the flat-fare zone. Flat fares apply to defined areas. Beyond them, the meter runs. A fixed transfer price covers the exact address you book.
A single invoice. Corporate accounts receive monthly invoicing with one all-in figure per ride.
How the taxi fits with the train and the app
At several of these airports, the cheapest option is not the taxi but the train: the RTD A Line in Denver, the Leonardo Express in Rome, the Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express in London. App rides add a third option, priced at the moment you request and moving with demand. Our guide to how much an Uber to the airport costs covers app pricing for departures, and the Uber cab price guide does the same for Canadian cities. A short checklist before you join the taxi line
- Check whether your airport publishes a flat or zone fare, and whether your destination is inside the zone.
- Count passengers: some flat fares rise above two.
- Note the time: night rates apply in some cities.
- Ask about pickup fees, vehicle-size surcharges and tolls.
- Add the tip.
- Check where the rank is and how long the line looks. Edmonton loads taxis outside Door 9 on the Arrivals level; at busy airports, the queue after several long-haul flights land can matter more than the fare.
- Then compare with the train, the app and a fixed car for the same trip.
How booking a fixed car works
Enter the airport, your flight number and the address, choose the vehicle and reserve. Confirmation arrives by email. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 72 hours or less costs 10%; 48 hours or less 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%. Rides in these cities are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. The airport transfers page and our chauffeur vs taxi comparison go into more detail.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from the airport to downtown?
Many airports publish it. Official flat fares include US$20 from Phoenix Sky Harbor to downtown Phoenix, US$32 from PHL to Center City, US$40 from Tampa International to downtown, US$72.04 from Denver International to downtown and C$62 from Edmonton. Where taxis are metered, airports often publish an estimate, such as about US$50 from O'Hare to downtown Chicago.
Are airport taxi fares per person or per car?
Usually per car, with exceptions. In New Orleans the US$36 flat fare covers up to two passengers and three or more pay US$15 each, and in Philadelphia each extra passenger over 12 adds US$1. Rome's €55 Fiumicino fare is per car. Elly8.net prices are always per vehicle.
Do airport taxis charge more at night?
Some do. Athens charges a €40 flat fare to the centre by day and €55 between midnight and 05:00. In London, black cab meters run on different tariffs by time of day. Most US flat fares listed here do not change at night, but check the airport's own page.
Is a taxi cheaper than a pre-booked car from the airport?
For one or two travellers with light bags, yes, on every route in this guide. A pre-booked car is better value for groups needing more than one taxi, late or uncertain arrivals, families needing child seats, client pickups and destinations outside the flat-fare zone.
Is the tip included in the airport taxi fare?
Not in North America. Taxi meters and flat fares exclude the tip, so add it when you compare. Elly8.net prices include standard gratuity, along with taxes and meet and greet. Tolls and parking are billed at cost.
Does the Elly8.net price change for the return trip?
No. Every one-way airport fare is the same fixed price in either direction. Downtown Tampa to TPA is US$120 in a business sedan, the same as the arrival, and round trips booked together are listed on each city page.
