If you land at Westchester County Airport (HPN) expecting a taxi rank with cabs waiting, you will be disappointed. The county's rules say taxi trips from the airport should be prearranged by calling a licensed company, and that cruising for passengers and hailing unoccupied taxis are not permitted at the airport. In practice, a Westchester airport taxi is a phone call followed by a wait.
That does not make taxis a bad choice. For a short trip with a carry-on, a called cab or the US$2.75 Bee-Line bus to White Plains can be exactly right. This guide sets out every option from HPN with the official rules and fares, then says plainly when each one wins, including when a pre-booked Elly8.net car at a fixed price from US$130 to White Plains is worth it.
Is there a taxi rank at Westchester Airport?
Not in the big-airport sense. Westchester County says taxi trips from HPN should be prearranged with a company licensed by the county Taxi and Limousine Commission or by Harrison, North Castle, Rye Brook or White Plains, and that cruising and hailing are not permitted. You call a company, then wait for the cab to arrive.
The airport's taxi and limousine page lists the licensed companies that actively serve the airport, with phone numbers, and notes that additional transportation options are posted on signs in the main terminal. Any taxi, limousine or car service authorised in the county or its municipalities may drop passengers at the terminal; pickups are where the prearrangement rule applies.

How a taxi pickup at HPN actually works
- You land and collect bags in the arrivals hall.
- You call a licensed company from the airport's list or the terminal signage, and give your destination.
- You wait for the cab to be dispatched to the terminal. How long depends on the time of day and how busy the company is; late evenings and bad-weather days are the hardest.
- You meet the cab at the curb. Curb space is limited and the airport enforces it strictly, so the driver cannot wait long for you.
- You pay the company's fare. The airport does not publish taxi fares, so ask for the price or the basis of the fare when you call.
The smartest version of this is simply to call the company before you fly and arrange the pickup for your landing time. At that point, you have pre-booked a car; the difference from a chauffeur service is mostly in the meeting (curb versus inside), flight tracking and whether the price is fixed in writing.
Every option from HPN, compared
| Option | Price | Wait and meeting point | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Called taxi | Set by the licensed company; not published by the airport | Call on landing, wait for dispatch, meet at the curb | One car's trunk | Short local trips, no booking |
| Bee-Line bus route 12 | US$2.75 | Bus stop on the island in front of the terminal, scheduled service | What you can carry on a bus | One traveller to downtown White Plains, daytime |
| Bus + Metro-North to Grand Central | US$2.75 + US$13.75 peak or US$10.25 off-peak | Bus to the TransCenter, then the next train | Carry-on | One traveller heading into Manhattan |
| Uber or Lyft | Set by the app at request time | Depends on driver availability | Depends on the car sent | Off-peak solo trips |
| Your own car, garage | US$8.76 an hour, up to US$36.47 a day (2026) | Garage across from the terminal | Unlimited | Short trips when you drive yourself |
| Elly8.net Business Sedan to White Plains | US$130, fixed and all-in | Inside arrivals, flight tracked | 3 passengers, 2 large bags | Executives, early flights, fixed budget |

The Bee-Line bus: the best value from HPN
The airport's public transit page says Bee-Line route 12 runs daily between the airport and the TransCenter in downtown White Plains, with stops at Purchase College and Manhattanville College. The fare is US$2.75, paid with a MetroCard or exact change, and children under five ride free with a fare-paying adult. The stop is on the island in front of the main terminal.
For one traveller with a carry-on going to a hotel or office in downtown White Plains during the day, this is hard to beat. It is less useful at night, with heavy luggage or children, or for anywhere the bus does not go: Greenwich, Bedford, Chappaqua and the river towns all need a second leg.
Metro-North: when you are heading to Manhattan
From the White Plains TransCenter, Metro-North's Harlem Line runs to Grand Central Terminal. The MTA's fare tables list White Plains in fare zone 4, at US$13.75 one way at peak and US$10.25 off-peak to Grand Central; buying on board costs more. Add the US$2.75 bus and you are in Midtown for under US$17 at peak.
That makes HPN plus the train a genuinely good way into the city for a solo traveller. It is two vehicles and a change, so it suits people travelling light who are comfortable with a timetable.
App rides at HPN
The airport's ground transportation pages cover taxis, limousines, car rental, parking and the Bee-Line bus; they do not describe a designated app pickup zone. Uber and Lyft can work for a trip from HPN, but the price is set by the app at the moment you request, and availability depends on how many drivers are nearby at that hour. Late in the evening, or when several flights land together in bad weather, waits can be long. Our chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft page goes through the differences in general.
Driving yourself and parking
The airport's parking page lists 2026 garage rates of US$4.38 per half hour, US$8.76 per hour and a maximum of US$36.47 per calendar day, with the long-term lot at US$20.88 a day for stays of more than three days. For a day trip, driving yourself is cheap and simple. For a week away, seven days in the long-term lot is about US$146, roughly the price of a fixed car one way to White Plains, without the early-morning drive.
A realistic plan for a late-night arrival
Suppose your flight is due at 10:30 pm and lands at 11:40 pm after a weather delay. Here is how each option plays out.
- Bus. Check the Bee-Line schedule for route 12 before you rely on it late at night; the airport describes it as a daily service between the terminal and the TransCenter, so the timetable decides whether a late bus is still running.
- Called taxi. You phone from the arrivals hall at midnight. Whether a cab is free depends on the company and the night.
- App ride. You request from the terminal and wait for a nearby driver to accept, at whatever price the app shows at that moment.
- Pre-booked car. The chauffeur has followed the delay and is in the arrivals hall when you come through. The price was fixed when you booked.
If the late arrival is a one-off and you are travelling light, calling a cab is a reasonable plan. If late landings are routine for you, a standing booking is the calmer option.
When a taxi is the right choice
Be fair to the taxi. It is a sensible option when:
- You are travelling alone or as a couple with light luggage.
- You are going somewhere close: Purchase, Harrison, Rye Brook or White Plains.
- You are flexible on time and comfortable calling from the terminal.
- You have arranged it by phone in advance with a licensed company you know.
If those boxes are ticked, a called cab or the bus is the efficient answer, and there is no reason to pay for more.
When a pre-booked car wins
A fixed-price chauffeured car is the better buy when:
- You land late. Late evenings are when called cabs and app rides are hardest to find, and the terminal empties quickly.
- Your flight is unpredictable. Weather delays on HPN routes are common in winter and summer storm season. A chauffeur tracks the flight; a taxi dispatched for 6:15 does not.
- You have luggage, golf bags or children. An SUV takes six people and six large bags, and child seats are available on request, fitted before pickup.
- You need a fixed budget. The price is known before you fly and covers the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet; only tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost.
- You are going further. Greenwich, Bedford, Tarrytown and the New York airports are a long way to rely on a call from the terminal.
- You are travelling for work. A corporate account puts every ride on one monthly invoice.
