A San Jose taxi from Mineta San Jose International (SJC) runs on a published meter, an Uber or Lyft is priced by the app at the moment you ask, and a pre-booked Elly8.net car has a fixed, all-in price before you fly: from US$145 in a Business Sedan from SJC to Mountain View. For a short hop downtown with one bag, the taxi or the app is usually the cheaper answer, and we say so.
The picture changes when the trip gets longer, the group gets bigger, the flight lands late or the day has several stops. This guide works through the real SJC meter rates, the pickup rules for each option at both terminals, and six common San Jose trips with an honest pick for each.
Is a San Jose taxi cheaper than Uber or a private car?
For short rides, usually yes. SJC taxis charge US$15 for the first mile, US$4 per additional mile and US$1 per minute of waiting, so downtown San Jose is roughly US$28 before traffic minutes and tip. App prices move with demand. An Elly8.net car costs more on short hops but stays fixed: SJC to Mountain View is US$145, gratuity included.
The useful comparison is not the cheapest fare on a quiet Tuesday afternoon. It is the fare you can count on when you book, the time you spend finding the car, and what happens if the flight is two hours late.
What the SJC taxi meter actually charges
Taxis at SJC are metered at one rate set by the airport. According to the SJC taxi page, every taxi from the airport charges US$15.00 for the first mile, US$4.00 for each additional mile and US$1.00 per minute of wait time. On-demand taxis wait at Terminal A, Stop 2 and Terminal B, Stop 1; pre-arranged taxis use Terminal A, Stop 3 and Terminal B, Stop 11.
The table applies that published meter to approximate road distances from the airport. It is arithmetic, not a quote: traffic minutes are charged on top, and a tip is customary.
| From SJC to | Approx. road distance | Taxi meter, distance only | Elly8.net fixed fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown San Jose (convention centre) | 4.3 mi (7 km) | about US$28 | quoted in the web booker |
| Santana Row | 4.5 mi (7 km) | about US$29 | quoted in the web booker |
| Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara | 6.2 mi (10 km) | about US$36 | quoted in the web booker |
| Cupertino (Apple Park area) | 9 mi (15 km) | about US$47 | quoted in the web booker |
| Mountain View | 11 mi (18 km) | about US$55 | US$145 Business Sedan, US$190 Business SUV |
| Palo Alto | 15.5 mi (25 km) | about US$73 | quoted in the web booker |
Two things follow. On a short run downtown the taxi is far cheaper, and that is the honest answer for one traveller with a carry-on. On longer runs into the valley the gap narrows once you add 15 or 20 minutes of US-101 traffic at a dollar a minute and a tip, and the Elly8.net fare already includes the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet inside the terminal.

Rideshare at SJC: the zones, Waymo and the Uber Black question
App-based rides at SJC pick up from set stops rather than the curb outside baggage claim. The SJC rideshare page lists them: at Terminal A, the arrivals curbside and ground transportation island, Stop 1 for Lyft, Tesla, Uber and Wingz and Stop 9 for Waymo; at Terminal B, the ground transportation island, Stops 7 (Waymo), 8 (Tesla, Uber), 9 (Uber) and 10 (Lyft, Wingz). Drop-offs are allowed at the departures curbs of both terminals.
That list makes SJC one of the few US airports where a driverless Waymo is a normal option at the curb. For a solo traveller with a backpack heading somewhere in its service area, that is a perfectly sensible choice.
Rideshare prices are not published in advance. They rise when many people ask at once, which at SJC tends to mean the evening arrival bank, the end of a big convention day downtown, and nights when Levi's Stadium or SAP Center empties. The price you see at 6 p.m. on a Thursday is not the price you see at 11 p.m. after a game.
A note on the premium app products. The SJC limousine page says that cars booked through an app, Uber Black or Lyft Black, pick up at the rideshare locations unless the driver redirects you. A pre-arranged chauffeur is different: the airport assigns pre-booked limousines their own areas, and with Elly8.net the chauffeur meets you inside first. Our Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur page sets out the other differences, including how surge pricing applies to premium tiers too.
Where each option meets you at SJC
The walk from baggage claim to the car is part of the comparison, especially with children or heavy bags.
| Option | Terminal A | Terminal B | Price known before you book? |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-demand taxi | Stop 2 | Stop 1 | Meter rate yes, total no |
| Lyft, Uber, Wingz, Tesla | Stop 1 | Stops 8, 9, 10 | No, set by the app at request |
| Waymo | Stop 9 | Stop 7 | No, set by the app at request |
| Pre-arranged limousine or chauffeur | Hourly Lot 2, first floor, outside baggage claim; International Arrivals at Stop 3 | Hourly Lot 5, outside baggage claim | Yes, with Elly8.net a fixed all-in fare |
With Elly8.net, the chauffeur tracks your flight, waits inside with a name board and walks you to the car in the pre-arranged area. Complimentary waiting starts after a tracked landing, so a delay in the air does not run up a waiting meter. Read how that works on our airport meet and greet page.
Six San Jose trips and the honest pick
1. One traveller, carry-on, a hotel near the convention centre. Take the taxi or an app ride. The meter is about US$28 before traffic, or ride free on VTA Route 60 to the Metro/Airport light rail station and pay the light rail fare into downtown. A chauffeur is more than you need for this trip, unless you land after midnight and want the certainty.
2. Two colleagues, three meetings in Santa Clara, Cupertino and Palo Alto. Book a chauffeur by the hour. Hourly service is US$100 an hour in a Business Sedan with a 3-hour minimum, so US$300 for three hours, and the car waits outside each building with your bags in the trunk. Three separate taxi legs would each start a new meter, and waiting time between meetings at US$1 a minute is the expensive part. For a full day of pitches, the corporate roadshow day runs from US$900. See hourly chauffeur and investor roadshow chauffeur.
3. A family of five with car seats and four suitcases. Book a Business SUV with child seats requested in advance. Taxis and app rides rarely carry seats for young children, and a standard car will not take five people plus luggage. SJC to Mountain View is US$190 in a Business SUV; other addresses, such as Los Gatos or Saratoga, are quoted in the web booker.
4. A 49ers game or stadium concert at Levi's Stadium. If you are close to a light rail line, VTA's Green Line to Great America station is the cheapest way in. If you want to come and go as a group, book the evening out and event night package from US$500 in a Business Sedan or US$1,000 in a 12-seat Executive Sprinter. The stadium's pickup and drop-off page puts rideshare pickup at Red Lot 7, which is where the post-game queue builds. Our sports event transportation page explains how the chauffeur stages for the end of the night.
5. A flight landing at 11:40 p.m. that may run late. Pre-book. The chauffeur tracks the flight, so a 1:00 a.m. landing still finds someone inside the terminal, and the price does not change at night. App availability late at night is usually fine at SJC, but it is not guaranteed, and the price can move.
6. A team of nine arriving together for an offsite. An Executive Sprinter from SJC to Mountain View is US$380 for the vehicle, which works out at about US$42 each for nine people. That is arithmetic for comparison only; the price is per vehicle. Three app rides would cost less on a quiet afternoon, but they will not arrive together. Our group transportation page covers multi-vehicle days.
Surge, meters and a budget you can approve
The difference between the three options is really about who carries the uncertainty. With a taxi, you carry the traffic: the meter keeps running at a dollar a minute. With an app ride, you carry demand: the price is set when you request. With a pre-booked car, the price is fixed before you travel, and the chauffeur carries both.
For a personal trip that rarely matters. For a company it often does. Travel managers can book Elly8.net cars on a corporate account with monthly invoicing, saved traveller profiles and a fixed price on every booking, which makes approvals simpler than reconciling app receipts. The corporate car service page explains the set-up for Silicon Valley teams, and NDAs are available on request for confidential visits.
Tolls and parking are billed at cost, and waiting beyond the included time is billed at cost too. Nothing else is added after the trip.
When VTA or Caltrain beats all three
There is a fourth option, and for some trips it is the best one. VTA Route 60, the Airport Flyer, stops at Terminal A, Stop 7 and Terminal B, Stop 5, and runs to Milpitas BART and Winchester stations. According to SJC's public transit page, it is free to ride in either direction from SJC. Light rail requires a fare; the adult single ride is US$2.50 on the VTA fares page. From the Santa Clara Transit Center you can connect to Caltrain for the Peninsula.
The airport's own estimates put downtown San Jose at 25 to 35 minutes by Route 60 and light rail, and Levi's Stadium at 45 to 60 minutes. For a traveller with one bag and time to spare, that is excellent value. With a large suitcase, a meeting at a campus away from the line, or a group, the transfers start to cost more than they save. Our guide to the San Jose airport shuttle options goes through every free and shared service at SJC in detail.
The quick decision guide
- Choose a taxi for short rides from SJC to downtown San Jose, Santana Row or nearby hotels, when you have no booking and the queue is short.
- Choose an app ride off-peak, when you are travelling light and flexible, and when you are happy to walk to the rideshare stop.
- Choose VTA if you are one person with a carry-on heading near a light rail or Caltrain station.
- Choose a pre-booked chauffeur for late or uncertain arrivals, families with child seats, groups who want one vehicle, multi-stop business days, event nights and any trip where a fixed number matters more than the lowest number.
Rides in San Jose and Silicon Valley are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer.
How booking works
Enter the pickup and drop-off, adding the flight number for SJC or SFO, choose the vehicle, then pay with Reserve now on a fixed-price route or use the web booker for any other address in the valley. Confirmation arrives by email with the chauffeur's details before you fly. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 72 hours or less is 10%, 48 hours or less 50%, and 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%, refunded to the original card.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from San Jose airport?
SJC taxis charge a metered US$15 for the first mile, US$4 for each additional mile and US$1 per minute of waiting, set by the airport. That makes downtown San Jose roughly US$28 and Mountain View roughly US$55 on distance alone, before traffic minutes and a tip. These are estimates from the published meter, not quotes.
Where do you catch Uber or Lyft at SJC?
At Terminal A, app rides pick up at Stop 1 on the arrivals curbside and ground transportation island. At Terminal B, Uber uses Stops 8 and 9 and Lyft uses Stop 10 on the ground transportation island. Waymo uses Stop 9 at Terminal A and Stop 7 at Terminal B. Follow the airport signs from baggage claim.
Is a private car worth it from SJC to Silicon Valley?
It depends on the trip. For one person going a few miles downtown, a taxi or app ride costs less. For Mountain View, Palo Alto or Cupertino, late arrivals, families needing child seats, groups or several meetings, a fixed fare from US$145 with meet and greet and gratuity included is often the better value.
Does the Elly8.net price change if the flight is delayed?
No. The chauffeur tracks the flight and adjusts to the actual landing, and complimentary waiting starts after a tracked landing. The fare is fixed when you book. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost, and the desk is available 24/7 if your plans change.
Can you book a car by the hour for meetings in San Jose?
Yes. Hourly service is US$100 an hour in a Business Sedan, US$125 in a Business SUV and US$200 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. The chauffeur waits outside each meeting. For a full programme, the corporate roadshow day runs from US$900 to US$1,800 depending on the vehicle.
What is the cheapest way from SJC to downtown San Jose?
VTA Route 60 is free from either terminal to the Metro/Airport light rail station, and the adult light rail fare is US$2.50. The airport estimates 25 to 35 minutes to downtown. A taxi is about US$28 on distance alone and quicker door to door.
