Ask for a San Jose airport shuttle and you could mean five different things: the free bus that loops the terminals and the Rental Car Center, VTA's free Airport Flyer to the light rail and BART, a hotel's courtesy van, a shared door-to-door shuttle, or a scheduled coach to the Monterey Bay. Mineta San Jose International (SJC) publishes a numbered stop for every one of them, which makes the comparison unusually clear.
A pre-booked private car from Elly8.net is the other end of the scale: one vehicle for your party, a chauffeur waiting inside, and a fixed, all-in price from US$145 to Mountain View in a Business Sedan or US$380 in a 12-seat Executive Sprinter. This guide sets out each shuttle honestly, including the cases where the free option is the right one.
Is there a free shuttle from San Jose airport?
Yes. VTA Route 60, the Airport Flyer, is free from both SJC terminals to the Metro/Airport light rail station, Milpitas BART and Winchester, with connections to Caltrain. Hotel courtesy shuttles are free for their guests. Door-to-door shuttles charge per trip, and an Elly8.net private car is fixed from US$145 to Mountain View.
Free does not always mean cheapest once onward fares, transfers and waiting are counted. The right choice depends on where you are going, how much you are carrying and how many of you there are.

The terminal and Rental Car Center shuttle
The first shuttle most travellers meet never leaves the airport. According to SJC's shuttle bus page, inter-terminal shuttles stop at both terminals and the Rental Car Center every 7 to 10 minutes, 24 hours a day. At Terminal A you board at Stop 6 on the ticketing-level curb; at Terminal B you cross to the middle island and use Stop 3 or 4. A separate shuttle serves Economy Lot 1.
If you are collecting a rental car, this is your ride. It does not go to downtown San Jose or Silicon Valley, and it is not a substitute for any of the options below.
VTA Route 60, the Airport Flyer
This is the best-value public link at SJC. Route 60 stops at Terminal A, Stop 7 and Terminal B, Stop 5, and runs to Milpitas BART and Winchester stations. SJC's public transit page states that it is free to ride in either direction from SJC; light rail beyond the Metro/Airport station needs a fare, which is US$2.50 for an adult single ride on the VTA fares page.
The airport publishes typical journey times using Route 60 and a connection:
| Destination | How | Airport's estimated time |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown San Jose (convention centre, City Hall) | Route 60 to Metro/Airport, then Blue or Green light rail | 25 to 35 minutes |
| SAP Center | Route 60 to Santa Clara Transit Center, then bus 22 or a train to Diridon | 30 to 40 minutes |
| Levi's Stadium | Route 60 to Metro/Airport, then Green Line to Great America | 45 to 60 minutes |
| PayPal Park | Route 60 direct to Coleman Ave and Earthquakes Way | 20 to 30 minutes |
| Caltrain for the Peninsula | Route 60 to Santa Clara Transit Center | then train time |
For one traveller with a carry-on and a hotel near a light rail stop, this is the right answer and costs a few dollars at most. With two large cases, a meeting at a campus away from the line, or a late arrival after the buses thin out, each transfer adds walking, waiting and risk.
Hotel courtesy shuttles
If you are sleeping near the airport, a hotel shuttle is often ideal. SJC's hotel shuttle page puts the pickup at the Terminal A Ground Transportation Center, Stop 8, and at Terminal B, Stop 12, to the right of baggage claim. The airport adds a practical warning: many hotels need a phone call once you are ready, so the van is not necessarily circling when you walk out.
Check three things when you book the room: whether the hotel runs a shuttle at all, the hours (the first and last runs matter for early departures and late landings), and whether it is on demand or on a timetable. A hotel shuttle only goes to its own hotel, so it does not help with a meeting in Palo Alto or a dinner in Los Gatos.
Door-to-door shared shuttles
Shared-ride vans still operate at SJC. On-demand shuttles wait at Terminal A, Stop 2 and Terminal B, Stop 1, and pre-arranged shuttles collect at Terminal A, Stop 3 and Terminal B, Stop 11, according to the airport's door-to-door page. Fares are set by each operator.
A shared van suits a solo traveller going somewhere a train does not reach, at a time when the van is not making many other stops. The trade-off is built into the model: the vehicle may wait for other passengers, and your address may be the third drop of four. On a weekday evening on US-101, the order of drops can matter more than the fare.
Scheduled coaches to the Monterey Bay
For travellers heading south to Carmel, Pebble Beach or Monterey, SJC lists a scheduled bus service that collects at the Terminal A Ground Transportation Center, Stop 4, and at Terminal B, Stop 12. That is a sensible option for one or two people on a fixed schedule. For a golf group or a family heading to the Pebble Beach area, a private car with room for clubs and luggage is quoted in the Elly8.net web booker, and the city to city car service page explains longer one-way trips.
The comparison in one table
| Option | Cost | Typical wait | Goes to your door? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Terminal and Rental Car Center shuttle | free | 7 to 10 minutes, 24 hours | no, airport only | rental cars, Economy Lot 1 |
| VTA Route 60 Airport Flyer | free from SJC; light rail US$2.50 | bus frequency | stations only | solo travellers with light bags |
| Hotel courtesy shuttle | free for guests | often called on arrival | yes, if it is your hotel | airport-area hotel stays |
| Door-to-door shared shuttle | operator's fare | on demand or pre-arranged | yes, after other drops | solo trips off the rail lines |
| Elly8.net Business Sedan to Mountain View | US$145 fixed, all-in | chauffeur waits inside | yes, first and only stop | late flights, meetings, up to 3 people |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter to Mountain View | US$380 fixed, all-in | chauffeur waits inside | yes | teams and families of up to 12 with bags |
Elly8.net fares include the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost.
Wait time: the cost a fare does not show
A shuttle is cheap because it is shared or runs to a timetable, and both of those mean waiting. Add the walk to the stop, the wait for the next departure, the transfer at Metro/Airport and the walk at the far end, and a 15-minute drive can take an hour.
A private car turns that round. The chauffeur tracks your flight, waits inside the terminal with a name board, and walks you to the car in the airport's pre-arranged area: the first floor of Hourly Lot 2 outside baggage claim at Terminal A, Stop 3 for International Arrivals, and Hourly Lot 5 at Terminal B, as listed on the SJC limousine page. Complimentary waiting starts after a tracked landing, so a late flight does not become a missed shuttle. More on how that works on our meet and greet page.
Comfort, luggage and children
Shuttles are built for passengers with manageable bags. A family with a stroller, two car seats and four cases will find a shared van tight and a bus impossible. Elly8.net can install child seats on request; add the ages when booking. A Business SUV carries up to six people with luggage, and the Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 passengers with up to 12 bags, which is why teams arriving for an offsite or a recruiting day usually choose it.
There is also the matter of arriving ready to work. A private car is quiet enough for a call, and the chauffeur can take you straight to a campus lobby with the building number you sent ahead, instead of a station two miles away.
Groups: when one vehicle beats several seats
For four or more people, the per-person picture shifts. An Executive Sprinter from SJC to Mountain View is US$380 for the vehicle. For ten people that is about US$38 each, as arithmetic for comparison only; Elly8.net prices are per vehicle. Ten seats on a shared van would rarely cost less, and the group would not arrive together. Our group transportation page explains multi-vehicle arrivals, and companies can book through a corporate account with monthly invoicing.
SJC or SFO?
If the shuttle question is really a question about which airport to use, the answer for most South Bay addresses is SJC: it is about 11 miles (18 km) from Mountain View, around 17 minutes on a clear road, against about 29 miles (47 km) from SFO. A private car from SFO to Mountain View starts at US$255. For San Francisco hotels, the San Francisco page covers SFO's own shuttle network.
The honest verdict
- Free shuttle wins: one traveller, carry-on, staying near a light rail or Caltrain station, or at an airport hotel with a courtesy van.
- Shared van wins: a solo traveller going somewhere the rail lines do not reach, outside rush hour.
- Private car wins: late or uncertain arrivals, families with child seats, groups of four or more, meetings that start soon after landing, and anyone who wants the price fixed before the flight.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a shuttle from SJC to downtown San Jose?
Yes. VTA Route 60 is free from both terminals to the Metro/Airport light rail station, where you board the Blue or Green line into downtown for a light rail fare of US$2.50. The airport estimates 25 to 35 minutes. A private car or taxi is quicker door to door.
Where do hotel shuttles pick up at San Jose airport?
Hotel courtesy shuttles use the Terminal A Ground Transportation Center, Stop 8, and Terminal B, Stop 12, to the right of baggage claim. Many hotels ask you to phone once you have your bags, so check the hotel's process and operating hours before you fly.
How often does the SJC terminal shuttle run?
The inter-terminal and Rental Car Center shuttles run every 7 to 10 minutes, 24 hours a day, and stop at both terminals and the Rental Car Center. They do not leave the airport, so they will not take you to a hotel or office.
Is a private car cheaper than a shuttle for a group?
Often, from about four people. An Elly8.net Executive Sprinter from SJC to Mountain View is US$380 for up to 12 passengers with bags, including gratuity. Divided by ten that is about US$38 each, as arithmetic only, since the price is per vehicle, and the group travels together.
Where does the Elly8.net chauffeur meet you at SJC?
Inside the terminal with a name board, then at the airport's pre-arranged limousine area: Hourly Lot 2 at Terminal A, Stop 3 for International Arrivals, or Hourly Lot 5 at Terminal B. The flight is tracked, and complimentary waiting starts after a tracked landing.
What is the cancellation policy for an SJC car?
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10%, at 48 hours or less it is 50%, and at 24 hours or less or for a no-show it is 100%, refunded to the original card. Time changes are often possible if you contact the desk early.
