"Airport shuttle New Orleans" can mean four different things: a hotel courtesy van, a private shared-ride service, the public airport bus, or a pre-booked private car. They differ by a factor of a hundred in price and by an hour or more in door-to-door time. The cheapest way from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International (MSY) into the city is the public Airport Express bus at US$1.25, and the most convenient is a pre-booked car, from US$170 to the French Quarter for the whole vehicle.
For most travellers the real choice sits in between, and New Orleans makes it easier than most cities because the airport publishes a taxi flat rate. This comparison uses the fares the airport itself lists, says plainly when the bus or a taxi is the smarter call, and shows where a door-to-door chauffeur wins. Rides booked through Elly8.net in New Orleans are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
Is the New Orleans airport shuttle worth it?
For one or two travellers with light bags, the public Airport Express bus at US$1.25 or the US$36 taxi flat rate is better value than any shuttle. For three or more, the taxi's US$15 a person is the benchmark. A door-to-door car, from US$170 for the vehicle, wins for late flights, families, groups and heavy luggage.
The rest of this guide sets out each option with its source, then compares them by group size. For the full Elly8.net fare table, see the New Orleans price list.

What "airport shuttle" means at MSY
Hotel and parking courtesy shuttles. According to the airport's shuttles page, courtesy shuttles serve off-airport parking and hotels and motels in the immediate vicinity of the airport, picking up at the Ground Transportation Center at Doors 1 to 5 on Level 1 baggage claim. These are useful if you are staying near the airport in Kenner. They do not take you to the French Quarter.
Rental car and garage shuttles. A separate shuttle runs from outside Level 1 baggage claim Door 9 to the rental car and economy garage areas. Again, not a ride into town.
Shared-ride shuttles into the city. The airport's own ground transportation pages do not list a shared-ride shuttle service or its fares. Private operators offer shared rides from time to time; if you find one, the fare is set by that company, and the useful test is simple: compare its per-person price with the taxi flat rate of US$15 a person for groups of three or more, and remember that a shared ride stops at other passengers' hotels along the way.
The public airport buses. The airport's public transportation page lists two routes, both boarding at Level 1 Baggage Claim outside Door 2, Zones B4 and B5:
- RTA Airport Express (202), US$1.25, to downtown New Orleans at Elk Place at Cleveland or the Union Passenger Terminal.
- JET Veterans-Airport (E1), US$1.50 within Jefferson Parish or US$2.00 into New Orleans, ending at City Park Avenue.
For a budget traveller, the 202 bus is effectively the airport shuttle into the city, at a fraction of the price of any private service.
The taxi flat rate: the benchmark to beat
According to the MSY taxi page, a taxi from the airport to the Central Business District or the French Quarter costs US$36 for up to two passengers, and US$15 per passenger for three or more. Taxis load in a dedicated zone on the Arrivals Curb outside Level 1 Baggage Claim Door 7.
That flat rate is why a shared shuttle rarely makes sense into the Quarter or the CBD. Two people sharing a taxi pay US$18 each and go straight to their hotel. Tip is extra.
App rides pick up on the middle curb outside baggage claim, with Lyft through Doors 7 to 9 and Uber through Doors 9 to 11, according to the airport's ride app page. Fares are not published and change with demand, so festival weekends and Friday evenings can cost well above a quiet weekday.
Side by side: price, time and luggage
| Option | Price into the Quarter or CBD | Door to door? | Time, beyond the 26-min clear-road drive | Luggage reality |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RTA Airport Express (202) | US$1.25 per person | No, ends at Elk Place or the Union Passenger Terminal | wait for the bus, stops on the way, walk at the end | fine with a carry-on, hard with big cases |
| JET E1 bus | US$2.00 per person into New Orleans | No, ends at City Park Avenue | longer, best for Mid-City | as above |
| Shared-ride shuttle (private) | set by the operator | Usually, after other drop-offs | wait to fill, then stops at other hotels | varies by van |
| Taxi flat rate | US$36 for 1 to 2; US$15 each for 3 or more | Yes | taxi queue at Door 7, then direct | a few cases per cab |
| Uber or Lyft | varies with demand | Yes | queue at the middle curb, then direct | depends on the car that arrives |
| Elly8.net Business Sedan | US$170 per vehicle, up to 3 | Yes | chauffeur waiting in arrivals, then direct | up to 2 bags |
| Elly8.net Business SUV | US$225 per vehicle, up to 6 | Yes | as above | up to 6 bags |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter | US$445 per vehicle, up to 12 | Yes | as above | up to 12 bags |
The drive from MSY to the French Quarter is about 16 miles (26 km), roughly 26 minutes on a clear road along I-10. Every option shares that drive; what differs is the waiting, the stops and the walk at the end.
By group size: which one wins
One traveller, a carry-on, daytime. Take the 202 bus or a taxi. At US$1.25, the bus is the obvious choice if your hotel is near Elk Place or you do not mind a short walk. A taxi at US$36 is the comfortable middle. A private car at US$170 is hard to justify unless it is late, you are working on the way, or a client is paying.
A couple. The taxi flat rate, US$36 for both, beats a shared shuttle and a private car on price. We would take the taxi ourselves in that situation. The case for a pre-booked car is a late landing, a lot of luggage, or simply wanting someone waiting with your name.
A family of four with car seats. The taxi costs US$60 plus tip, and you cannot count on child seats being available. An Elly8.net Business SUV is US$225 with child seats fitted before pickup on request, and room for a stroller and six bags. That is the clearest case for the private car.
Six friends with checked bags. Taxi: US$90 plus tip, possibly two cabs. Business SUV: US$225, one vehicle, everyone together, bags in the back. Close on value; the SUV wins on simplicity.
Ten to twelve people. Taxis at US$15 each come to US$150 to US$180 plus tips, in three or four cabs. The Executive Sprinter is US$445 for up to twelve, about US$37 each, in one vehicle with one chauffeur and all the bags. The taxis are cheaper; the Sprinter keeps a wedding party, a team or a festival crew together and on time. Our New Orleans Sprinter van guide covers group bookings.
| Party | Bus (202) | Taxi flat rate | Elly8.net | Per person, Elly8.net |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | US$1.25 | US$36 | US$170 Business Sedan | US$170 |
| 2 | US$2.50 | US$36 | US$170 Business Sedan | US$85 |
| 4 | US$5 | US$60 | US$225 Business SUV | about US$56 |
| 6 | US$7.50 | US$90 | US$225 Business SUV | US$37.50 |
| 12 | US$15 | US$180 | US$445 Executive Sprinter | about US$37 |
Taxi figures exclude tip; Elly8.net figures include taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet, with tolls and parking billed at cost.
When the door-to-door car is the right call
Being fair cuts both ways. A pre-booked chauffeur is the better buy when:
- You land late. Late-evening arrivals are when queues are long and options thin. Check the bus schedule if you are relying on it for a late flight; a booked car is waiting regardless.
- You have children. Child seats are available on request and fitted before pickup.
- You have more luggage than a cab takes. Golf bags, instruments, trade show cases.
- The group must arrive together. Weddings, conference teams and festival crews.
- You are heading beyond the CBD and the Quarter. The taxi flat rate covers the CBD and the French Quarter. For Uptown, the Garden District, Metairie or anywhere else, the web booker gives a fixed price before you pay.
- It is a big weekend. Mardi Gras, which according to New Orleans & Company ends on Fat Tuesday, February 9, 2027, and Jazz Fest, usually in late April and early May, are when app prices rise and queues lengthen.
- The trip is on a company card. A corporate account gives monthly invoicing and saved traveller profiles.
How the pickup works, step by step, is in our New Orleans airport transfer walkthrough. In short: the chauffeur tracks the flight, meets you in arrivals with a name board, and there is complimentary waiting after a tracked landing.
Going back to the airport
The same logic applies on departure day, and the Elly8.net fare is the same fixed price in the other direction: US$170 in a Business Sedan up to US$445 in an Executive Sprinter from the French Quarter to MSY. Booking both legs together gives the round-trip price, from US$325 to US$850. For groups leaving after a wedding or a festival, a single scheduled pickup is often the difference between a calm morning and a lobby full of people refreshing an app.
The verdict
The New Orleans "airport shuttle" most people are looking for is either the US$1.25 Airport Express bus, which is excellent value for a solo traveller with light bags, or a shared-ride service that has to beat a US$36 taxi for two and US$15 a head for groups, which is a high bar. For one to three people at a normal hour, take the bus or the taxi. For families, groups of six or more, late arrivals, heavy luggage, event weekends and anywhere beyond the CBD and the Quarter, a door-to-door car with a fixed price is the better buy.
