Yes, you can use Uber in Budapest, but it works differently from home. BKK, the Budapest transport authority, lists Uber Taxi among the licensed taxi companies that meet the city's taxi regulation, alongside Bolt, City Taxi, Elit Taxi and Főtaxi. Budapest taxis charge an official fare that BKK says is the same at all times of day and for all operators, calculated from a base fare, a distance rate and a time rate.
For a North American visitor that is mostly good news: the app is familiar, the car is a licensed yellow taxi and the tariff is public. What the app cannot do is guarantee a large vehicle, a meeting point inside the terminal or a car waiting when your cruise ship empties onto the embankment. For those trips, a pre-booked Elly8.net car from Budapest Airport (BUD) to the Danube embankment costs from US$115 per vehicle, fixed and all-in.
How does Uber work in Budapest, and what does it cost?
In Budapest, Uber operates as Uber Taxi, one of the licensed taxi companies listed by BKK. Rides are licensed taxis charging the official Budapest fare: a base fare, HUF 520 per km and HUF 130 per minute in slow traffic, with a HUF 2,100 airport base fare for trips to or from the airport.
BKK publishes the current tariff on its taxi services page. The fare table shows a base fare of HUF 1,300, an airport base fare of HUF 2,100, a time-based rate of HUF 130 per minute that applies when the taxi is moving below 15 km/h, and a distance-based rate of HUF 520 per km. Fare calculation starts when the taximeter is switched on after you get in and stops when you arrive. BKK adds that the official price is the same at all times of day and for all operators, and that you can pay with cash or with physical or digital bank cards.

What about surge pricing?
At home, Uber's surge pricing raises fares automatically when riders outnumber available drivers, with prices updating frequently until supply catches up. In Budapest the picture is different. Because BKK lists Uber Taxi as a licensed operator under the municipal taxi regulation, and states that the official taxi price is the same at all times and for all operators, the tariff itself does not rise with demand the way a North American surge multiplier does.
That does not mean the busy moments disappear. When demand peaks, what changes is how long you wait for a car to accept and arrive. Those moments are predictable:
- Cruise disembarkation mornings, when several river ships empty onto the embankment within the same hour.
- Late nights around Deák Ferenc tér and the Gozsdu Courtyard, where bars and clubs close at similar times.
- Formula 1 weekend at the Hungaroring, which Formula 1 schedules from 30 July to 1 August 2027, with the race on the Sunday, and big festival days in August.
- Rain and winter weather, when walkers take cars.
Bear in mind too that the time-based part of the tariff runs whenever the taxi is crawling below 15 km/h. Traffic does not change the rates, but a slow trip costs more than a fast one over the same distance.
Uber at Budapest Airport
Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport sits about 24 km (15 mi) from the Danube embankment, about 32 minutes on a clear road. Under BKK's rules, from August 2026 every licensed taxi trip to or from the airport carries the HUF 2,100 airport base fare.
As arithmetic for comparison only, and assuming the airport base fare applies in place of the standard one, a 24 km run at the published rates comes to about HUF 14,600 before any minutes spent below 15 km/h in traffic. The actual taximeter reading depends on the route and conditions on the day.
With the app, you request after landing and meet the driver at the pickup point shown in the app. A pre-booked Elly8.net chauffeur tracks your flight from the number you give us and waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary.
The cheapest option of all is the bus. BKK's 100E Airport Express runs directly between the airport and Deák Ferenc tér via Kálvin tér in about 40 minutes, for a HUF 2,500 single ticket paid by bank card on board. In the daytime it runs every 6 to 10 minutes on Mondays and Fridays and every 7 to 10 minutes on other days, and every 30 to 40 minutes on average at night. For a solo traveller with a rolling case and a hotel near Deák Ferenc tér, it is the right choice.
The options from BUD side by side
| Option | Price | Time to the centre | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100E Airport Express bus | HUF 2,500 single, bank card on board | About 40 min to Deák Ferenc tér | Solo travellers, light bags |
| Uber Taxi or another licensed taxi | Official tariff plus HUF 2,100 airport base fare | About 32 min clear road | One to three people, short notice |
| Elly8.net business sedan | From US$115 per vehicle, fixed | About 32 min, door to door | Late flights, couples with bags |
| Elly8.net Business SUV / Van | US$150 per vehicle, fixed | About 32 min, door to door | Families of up to 6 with 6 bags |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter | US$300 per vehicle, fixed | About 32 min, door to door | Groups of up to 12 with luggage |
Groups: where the app runs out of room
Uber's Budapest city guide describes group rides, where each person can add their own pickup or drop-off, and notes that a single account holder can order up to three rides on demand. It also lets you reserve a ride up to 30 days ahead. Unlike the Oslo or Stockholm guides, it does not list a larger UberXL-type option for Budapest.
For a family or group with luggage, that usually means two or three taxis. The Elly8.net vehicle classes are defined by seats and bags: a Business Sedan or First Class Sedan takes three passengers and two large bags, a Business SUV or First Class SUV six passengers and six bags, and an Executive Sprinter twelve and twelve. Every fare is per vehicle. As arithmetic for comparison only, an Executive Sprinter from BUD at US$300 shared by ten travellers is US$30 each, with one meeting point and one loading of the bags. See the fleet.
River cruises: the busiest kerb in town
Budapest is a major port of call on the Danube, and river ships tie up along the embankments in the city centre, at berths that depend on the ship and the day. On disembarkation mornings, many guests want a car at the same time, which is exactly when app requests take longest.
For a cruise transfer, give us the ship name, the cruise line, the berth from your cruise documents and the time you expect to leave the ship. The chauffeur meets you at the agreed point on the embankment with a name board, loads the luggage and drives you to the airport, a hotel or on to Vienna. See cruise port transfers. If Vienna is next, our guide to Vienna to Budapest by car covers the drive in both directions.
When Uber is the right call in Budapest
Fairness matters here, because Budapest's taxis are regulated and good value:
- Short trips across Pest or over the bridges to Buda, especially off-peak.
- One or two travellers who would rather not wait for a bus.
- Evenings when your plans are open, since you can request a licensed taxi whenever you are ready.
- A quick hop to the thermal baths, such as the Széchenyi Bath in the City Park, about 7 km (5 mi) and 12 minutes from the embankment by routed estimate.
Make sure the car is a licensed taxi. BKK says Budapest taxis are yellow, carry the words "qualified Budapest taxi" on the left front door, show the official fare table on the dashboard and the two rear doors, and display an internal licence plate on the rear side windows. BKK recommends ordering by app or by phone.
Receipts and complaints
Keep the details of any taxi trip that goes wrong. BKK says it can investigate a complaint quickly if you provide the details that identify the driver, such as the vehicle's registration number or the licence number on the right front door, and if you fill in and sign its complaint report form. If a driver is found to have broken the law, BKK requests the revocation of the taxi rank permit, which keeps that driver off Budapest's streets for a year. Through the app, the trip record and receipt make this easier, which is one more reason to follow BKK's advice to order a taxi by app or by phone.
When a pre-booked chauffeur wins
- Arrivals, especially late flights and long-haul connections through Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam or Vienna, when you want someone waiting with your name.
- Families with child seats, fitted before pickup when you give the ages.
- Groups and luggage, where one SUV or Sprinter replaces several taxis.
- Cruise mornings and race days, when demand peaks.
- A fixed budget in US dollars, paid when you book, including standard gratuity.
- Full days. The hourly service costs US$85 an hour in a business sedan to US$170 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum, and the evening out and event night package from US$425 to US$850. See hourly chauffeur.

Frequently asked questions
Is Uber legal in Budapest?
Yes. BKK, the city's transport authority, lists Uber Taxi among the licensed taxi companies that meet the Municipal Taxi Regulation, together with Bolt, City Taxi, Elit Taxi and Főtaxi. Rides are licensed taxis charging the official Budapest fare.
Does Uber surge in Budapest?
BKK states that the official taxi price is the same at all times of day and for all operators, so the tariff does not rise with demand the way a surge does at home. Busy periods still mean longer waits, and slow traffic adds the HUF 130 per minute time rate.
How much is an Uber from Budapest Airport to the city?
Airport trips start from the HUF 2,100 airport base fare and add HUF 520 per km and HUF 130 per minute below 15 km/h. As arithmetic only, 24 km comes to about HUF 14,600 before slow-traffic minutes. An Elly8.net car is US$115 per vehicle, fixed.
Can a group of six take one Uber in Budapest?
Uber's Budapest guide does not list a large-vehicle option, so a group of six with luggage usually needs two taxis. An Elly8.net Business SUV or Van takes six passengers and six large bags from BUD for US$150, and an Executive Sprinter twelve and twelve for US$300.
Is the 100E bus better than Uber?
For one person with light luggage going to Deák Ferenc tér or Kálvin tér, yes: HUF 2,500, about 40 minutes, every few minutes by day. For two or more people, heavy bags or a hotel away from the route, a taxi or a pre-booked car is simpler.
Can you meet us from a Danube river cruise?
Yes. Give us the ship name, cruise line, berth and the time you expect to disembark. The chauffeur meets you at the agreed point on the embankment with a name board, loads the luggage and drives you to the airport, a hotel or on to Vienna.
