Vienna to Budapest is about 244 km (152 mi) by road, a drive of about 2 hours 38 minutes on a clear road by routed estimate from Vienna's Innere Stadt to the Danube embankment in Budapest. The route is motorway almost all the way: the A4 east out of Vienna to the Hungarian border, then the M1 past Győr into Budapest. From Vienna International Airport (VIE) it is a little shorter, about 228 km (142 mi) and 2 hours 26 minutes.
That makes this one of the easiest capital-to-capital transfers in Europe, and one where the train is a strong rival. ÖBB runs trains from Vienna to Budapest every hour. For one or two travellers with light bags, the train is the sensible choice. For a family or group with luggage, a river-cruise passenger with a week of cases, or anyone who wants to stop at Pannonhalma Archabbey or the Esterházy Palace on the way, a private driver from door to door is worth it. The one-way fare is fixed and shown on the Elly8.net web booker before you pay.
How long is the drive from Vienna to Budapest?
About 2 hours 38 minutes for 244 km (152 mi) on a clear road, by routed estimate from central Vienna to the Danube embankment in Budapest. From Vienna Airport it is about 228 km (142 mi) and 2 hours 26 minutes. With one stop for coffee or a sight, plan on three and a half to four hours door to door.
Of that distance, about 66 km is on Austria's A4 and about 170 km on Hungary's M1, by routed estimate, with the last few kilometres through the city to your hotel. Traffic around Vienna and on the approach to Budapest at rush hour adds time; the fare is fixed whatever the clock does.

The honest case for the train
ÖBB, Austria's federal railway, describes a fast, direct connection from Vienna to the Hungarian capital every hour. Its Sparschiene fares are good value, can be booked up to six months ahead and are limited in number on each train, so it pays to book early.
From the airport, Vienna International Airport's rail table gives 2 hours 59 minutes to Budapest by Railjet with a change at Vienna Central Station, every two hours. The airport's bus page also lists coach operators FlixBus and RegioJet on the Budapest route.
For a solo traveller or a couple with a suitcase each, staying near the stations, take the train. It is comfortable, frequent and much cheaper per person than a car, and the time on board is about the same as the drive.
When a private driver is worth it
Three or more people with luggage. Elly8.net prices are per vehicle, never per person. A Business SUV or Van takes six passengers and six large bags, and an Executive Sprinter twelve and twelve, so a family or group pays one fixed fare and nobody hauls cases through two stations and onto a platform.
Before or after a Danube river cruise. Many cruises begin or end in Budapest, with ships tying up along the city-centre embankments, while flights home often leave from Vienna. A car can collect you at the berth and drive you to your Vienna hotel or straight to VIE, with the luggage in the boot the whole way. Give us the ship, the cruise line, the berth and the time you leave the ship. See cruise port transfers.
Straight from the plane. If you land at Vienna and want to sleep in Budapest tonight, the chauffeur meets you in arrivals with a name board and drives you on, about 2 hours 26 minutes on a clear road. No train change at Vienna Central Station, no carrying bags between platforms.
A stop on the way. The motorway passes two UNESCO World Heritage sites within a short detour. A private driver stops wherever you like, and the web booker prices multi-stop transfers.
Children and timing. Child seats are fitted before pickup when you give the ages, and the departure time is yours, not the timetable's.
Stops worth making between Vienna and Budapest
The times below are routed clear-road estimates from central Vienna to the Danube embankment in Budapest with the stop added. Compared with the direct drive, each adds between a few minutes and an hour of driving, plus the time you spend there.
Győr. About 124 km (77 mi) and 1 hour 30 minutes from Vienna, then about 122 km (76 mi) and 1 hour 23 minutes to Budapest: almost exactly halfway, and only about 15 minutes of extra driving. A walk and lunch in the city centre make the easiest break of the day. Total driving: about 2 hours 53 minutes.
Pannonhalma Archabbey. About 140 km (87 mi) and 1 hour 41 minutes from Vienna, then about 131 km (81 mi) and 1 hour 29 minutes to Budapest. UNESCO lists the Millenary Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma as a World Heritage site: the first Benedictine monks settled here in 996, founded the country's first school and in 1055 wrote the first document in Hungarian, and the monastic buildings, the oldest dating from 1224, still house a school and the community. Total driving: about 3 hours 11 minutes.
Győr and Pannonhalma together. Vienna to Győr about 1 hour 30 minutes, Győr to Pannonhalma about 22 km and 25 minutes, then on to Budapest about 1 hour 31 minutes: some 277 km (172 mi) and 3 hours 26 minutes of driving. With lunch in Győr and an hour at the abbey, it is a full but easy day.
Fertőd and the Esterházy Palace. About 97 km (60 mi) and 1 hour 25 minutes from Vienna, then about 191 km (119 mi) and 2 hours 12 minutes to Budapest, some 288 km (179 mi) and 3 hours 38 minutes in all. The palace sits in the Fertő / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape, which UNESCO lists as World Heritage, and which it describes as including the Fertőd Esterházy Palace among outstanding examples of the landed aristocracy's architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Bratislava. About 82 km (51 mi) and 1 hour 2 minutes from Vienna, then about 200 km (124 mi) and 2 hours 6 minutes to Budapest: three capitals in one day, with lunch below Bratislava Castle. Total driving: about 3 hours 8 minutes.
The Danube Bend route. For travellers heading into Budapest from the north-west, an alternative runs by way of Esztergom and Szentendre, about 296 km (184 mi) and 4 hours 9 minutes of driving. Alternatively, arrive directly and take the Danube Bend as a separate day: the signature 6-hour Szentendre and Visegrád package from Budapest costs from US$470 in a business sedan to US$940 in an Executive Sprinter.
A sample day: Vienna to Budapest by way of Pannonhalma
Using routed clear-road times:
- 09:00, Vienna. The chauffeur loads the bags at your hotel in the Innere Stadt and heads east on the A4.
- About 10:45, Pannonhalma. An hour and a half at the archabbey.
- About 12:30, Győr. Lunch in the old centre, about 25 minutes from the abbey.
- About 14:15, back on the M1. Győr to Budapest is about 1 hour 23 minutes.
- About 15:45, Budapest. Check in by the Danube with the evening free.
On the train the trip has no stops, which is perfectly fine if you do not want any. The car's advantage is that the stop costs you nothing but time, and the luggage stays in the boot.
Budapest to Vienna: the trip in reverse
The search for Budapest to Vienna is almost as common, usually from travellers ending a river cruise or a Budapest stay with a flight from Vienna. The route and the times are the same in reverse: about 244 km and 2 hours 38 minutes to central Vienna, or about 228 km and 2 hours 26 minutes to VIE. For an afternoon flight, a morning pickup from the embankment with a stop at Győr or Pannonhalma still reaches the airport with time to spare. Ask the desk to set the pickup time from your flight's check-in window.
What a Vienna to Budapest driver costs
This long one-way transfer has no fixed package on the city price lists; the fixed, all-in price for your date, route and vehicle is shown on the web booker before you pay. It includes the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity. Motorway tolls on both sides of the border and parking are billed at cost. See city to city car service.
For scale, the published city prices at each end are:
- Vienna Airport to the Innere Stadt: from US$125 in a business sedan to US$325 in an Executive Sprinter. See the Vienna chauffeur service.
- Budapest Airport to the Danube embankment: from US$115 in a business sedan to US$300 in an Executive Sprinter. See the Budapest chauffeur service.
- By the hour in either city: from US$85 an hour in a business sedan to US$170 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. See hourly chauffeur.
As a rule, the car makes financial sense for groups. For four to six travellers with luggage, one Business SUV can compare well with four to six train tickets and taxis at both ends. For a couple, the train will usually cost less.
