Naples to Positano by car is about 58 km (36 mi) from Napoli Centrale, roughly 65 minutes on a clear road, by our routed estimate on the public OSRM network. From Naples International Airport (NAP) it is about 62 km (38 mi), roughly 70 minutes. Most drivers take the western road over the Sorrento peninsula; the alternative is the full length of the Amalfi coast road from Vietri sul Mare, which is longer and slower but passes every town on the coast.
A pre-booked Elly8.net driver from Naples Airport to Positano costs from US$280 in a business sedan and US$365 in a business SUV, fixed per vehicle and charged in US dollars, with tolls billed at cost. For a pickup in central Naples, or a transfer with a stop at Herculaneum or Pompeii on the way, the web booker returns a fixed price before you pay. This guide covers both roads, the stops and the costs.
How long does it take to drive from Naples to Positano?
About 65 minutes on a clear road from central Naples, about 58 km (36 mi), and about 70 minutes from Naples Airport, routed on the public OSRM network. In summer the cliff road is often slower because of buses and bends. The longer eastern route via Vietri sul Mare is about 90 km (56 mi) and 1 hour 35 minutes.
The clear-road figure is a floor, not a promise. The motorway part of the drive is quick; the last stretch, on the narrow road that clings to the cliffs above Positano, is where time goes. Allow more for a dinner booking or a boat.

The two roads into Positano
| Route | Distance | Clear-road drive | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Napoli Centrale to Positano, western road via the Sorrento peninsula | 58 km / 36 mi | about 65 min | Motorway along the bay, then over the peninsula and down to the coast |
| Naples Airport (NAP) to Positano, western road | 62 km / 38 mi | about 70 min | The usual airport transfer |
| Napoli Centrale to Vietri sul Mare | 50 km / 31 mi | about 45 min | Motorway towards Salerno |
| Vietri sul Mare to Positano on the coast road | 40 km / 25 mi | about 48 min on a clear road | Every town on the coast; slow in season |
| Napoli Centrale to Positano via Vietri, total | 90 km / 56 mi | about 1 h 35 min | The scenic way in |
The western road. This is the standard transfer. The routed path follows the A3 Napoli-Salerno motorway around the Bay of Naples past Vesuvius, then the SS145 Sorrentina along the peninsula, and joins the SS163 coast road for the last few kilometres into Positano. It is the shortest and most predictable way, and it reaches Positano before the busiest towns of the coast.
The eastern road. Here the car stays on the motorway towards Salerno and joins the coast at Vietri sul Mare, where the SS163 Amalfitana begins. From Vietri, the road runs about 40 km through Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Atrani, Amalfi, Conca dei Marini, Furore and Praiano before Positano. On a quiet morning out of season it is one of the great drives in Europe; on a summer afternoon it is a long crawl behind buses. Choose it if you want to see the whole coast on arrival, or if you are staying in Ravello or Amalfi, which it reaches first.
Plate days on the coast road. The SS163 Amalfitana, which begins at Vietri sul Mare and runs through the towns of the coast, is the road covered by the alternating-plate ordinance. Under the 2026 ANAS rules published by the Comune di Praiano, private cars are restricted between 10.00 and 18.00 on restricted days, depending on the last digit of the plate and the date; taxis and NCC licensed hire cars with driver are exempt. A self-drive rental may be barred on half the days of a summer week; a licensed driver is not.
Stops worth making on the way
The drive is short enough that a stop does not ruin the day, and the Bay of Naples has some of the best sites in Italy within a few minutes of the motorway.
Herculaneum. The smaller Roman town on the bay sits about 10 km (6 mi) from Napoli Centrale, roughly 12 minutes on a clear road, and from there Positano is about 50 km (31 mi), roughly an hour. It is compact, so a visit of two hours or so fits easily into an arrival day. Check opening times on the Herculaneum Archaeological Park site before you go.
Pompeii. The great site is about 24 km (15 mi) from Napoli Centrale and 27 km (17 mi) from the airport, roughly 25 minutes either way, and from the ruins to Positano is about 36 km (22 mi), roughly 46 minutes. Pompeii is large; allow at least three hours and buy entry in advance from the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. Your luggage stays in the car while you walk.
Vico Equense and the Sorrento peninsula. On the western road, the car passes the small towns of the peninsula. Vico Equense is about 44 km (27 mi) from the airport, roughly 46 minutes. A coffee stop with a view of the bay is easy to add.
Sorrento. If the plan includes Sorrento for lunch or a look at the old town, the detour is small: Sorrento centre to Positano is about 16 km (10 mi), roughly 21 minutes on a clear road. Our guide to Naples Airport to Sorrento by car covers Sorrento as a destination.
On the eastern road: Amalfi and Ravello. If you come in via Vietri, Amalfi is the natural pause: the cathedral square and the harbour, about 19 km (12 mi) and 28 minutes before Positano. Ravello, with the gardens of Villa Rufolo, is about 7 km (5 mi) and 9 minutes up the hill from Amalfi.
A realistic arrival day with a stop
For travellers landing from North America, a stop works best when the flight lands in the morning. A sample plan:
- Land at NAP, mid-morning. The chauffeur meets you in arrivals with a name board, having tracked the flight; waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary.
- Herculaneum or Pompeii, two to three hours. The car waits with the bags.
- Lunch on the way. The chauffeur can suggest a place near the route, or keep going.
- Positano by mid-afternoon. Check-in, with the bags carried to the hotel entrance.
If your flight lands late, skip the stop. A day out from the coast to Pompeii later in the week is easy: the signature 8-hour Pompeii day trip costs from US$665 in a business sedan, US$850 in a business SUV and US$1,325 in an Executive Sprinter, all-in.

From central Naples, the station or the port. The reference fare is from the airport. For a pickup at Napoli Centrale, a Naples hotel or the port at Molo Beverello, enter the address in the web booker and the desk returns a fixed price per vehicle. Train arrivals are met at the station; see train station transfers.
With a stop. A transfer with a stop at Herculaneum or Pompeii is quoted through the web booker as one fixed price. Alternatively, book the car by the hour: as arithmetic only, five hours in a business sedan is US$450, which covers a pickup, a visit of a couple of hours and the drive to Positano. The desk will say which works out better for your plan.
What is included. The chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Motorway tolls and parking are billed at cost.
For comparison. The City of Naples sets a fixed taxi fare of €145 per car from the city to Positano, including the airport supplement and luggage, with tolls extra, published on its taxi service page. That is cheaper than our business sedan, and a fair choice for a straightforward ride from the rank. A pre-booked car adds the booking from home, the price in US dollars, the meeting inside arrivals, child seats fitted before pickup, stops planned in advance and vehicles up to an Executive Sprinter. For the train and bus alternative, see our guide to Naples to the Amalfi Coast by train or driver.
Which vehicle for the coast road
The fleet page lists capacities; on the coast road, the choice is about luggage and comfort on the bends.
- Business sedan or First Class Sedan. Three passengers and two bags. Right for a couple with carry-on sized cases.
- Business SUV or First Class SUV. Six passengers and six bags. The sensible choice for families and for two couples with full-size suitcases, and the most comfortable ride for children on the hairpins.
- Executive Sprinter. Twelve passengers and twelve bags, for wedding parties and groups. See Sprinter van with driver and group transportation.
Child and booster seats are fitted on request before pickup; give the children's ages when you book.
Tips for the drive
- Tell us the exact hotel. Positano is vertical, and many hotels are reached by steps from the road. The drop-off point varies a great deal between properties.
- Motion on the bends. If anyone in the party is prone to car sickness, say so; the chauffeur will take the bends gently and stop if needed.
- Plan the boat days. If you are heading on to Capri, the road part is to the harbour. Visitors' cars are not allowed on the island, per the Capri tourism office.
- Book the return now. Positano to NAP is the same fixed fare as the arrival, and the morning run to an early flight is the one you do not want to leave to chance.
The drive back to Naples
The return is the same road in reverse and the same fixed fare, from US$280 in a business sedan to NAP. What changes is the clock. A flight home to North America usually means a morning departure from Naples or a connection through another European hub, and the coast road is at its quietest early in the day. Uber's own page for Naples Airport suggests reaching the airport three hours before an international flight; build the pickup time back from that, then add a margin for the cliff road in summer. The desk proposes a pickup time when you book, based on your flight and the hotel.
If you are flying out of Rome instead, the drive north is about 269 km (167 mi) from Positano to central Rome, roughly 3 hours 25 minutes on a clear road, and it is quoted through the web booker as a fixed price.

Which road is better, via Sorrento or via Amalfi?

The eastern road via Vietri sul Mare shows you the whole coast but is about 1 hour 35 minutes on a clear road and slower in summer. For Ravello or Amalfi hotels, the eastern road can make sense.
Does the alternating-plate rule affect the drive?
Not for a licensed driver. The 2026 ANAS rules published by the Comune di Praiano exempt taxis and NCC licensed hire cars from the restriction on the SS163 Amalfitana, the coast road that begins at Vietri sul Mare. Private cars and rentals are limited between 10.00 and 18.00 on restricted days.
Is a Naples taxi a good alternative?
For a simple ride from the rank, yes. The city's fixed fare to Positano is €145 per car, including the airport supplement and luggage, with tolls extra. A pre-booked car adds a meeting inside arrivals, the price in US dollars, child seats, planned stops and larger vehicles.
