Pompeii is about 235 km (146 mi) from the historic centre of Rome by road, roughly 2 hours 40 minutes on a clear road, according to a route on the public OSRM network. That makes a day trip possible, but only with a plan: five and a half hours or more of round-trip driving, a site that deserves at least three hours, and a last entry that falls in mid-afternoon for half the year.
The train is a fair alternative for travellers who are comfortable with a change in Naples and a shuttle at the far end. A private driver makes the most sense for families, for anyone who wants to walk the site without watching the clock for a train, and above all for travellers moving on to Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast, where Pompeii becomes a stop on the way rather than a long return trip.
How long is the drive from Rome to Pompeii?
Routed on the public OSRM network, Rome's historic centre to the Pompeii archaeological site is about 235 km (146 mi) and 2 hours 40 minutes on a clear road, on the A1 and then the A3 towards Salerno. Allow extra time for traffic around Rome and Naples; a round trip means at least five and a half hours of driving.
The route runs south on the A1 Autostrada del Sole to Naples, then onto the A3 Napoli-Salerno motorway. The Archaeological Park of Pompeii gives the Pompei Scavi exit on the A3 for drivers. From central Naples the ruins are only about 26 km (16 mi) further, roughly 26 minutes on a clear road, which is why the site pairs so naturally with Naples, Sorrento and the coast.
| Leg (routed estimate) | Distance | Clear-road drive |
|---|---|---|
| Rome historic centre to Pompeii | 235 km / 146 mi | about 2 h 40 min |
| Fiumicino airport (FCO) to Pompeii | 260 km / 162 mi | about 3 h 5 min |
| Rome historic centre to Herculaneum | 223 km / 139 mi | about 2 h 35 min |
| Herculaneum to Pompeii | 16 km / 10 mi | about 17 min |
| Pompeii to Sorrento | 26 km / 16 mi | about 37 min |
| Pompeii to Positano | 36 km / 22 mi | about 46 min |
All figures are routed estimates from OSRM on a clear road, not traffic forecasts.
Tickets and time slots: the rules that shape the day
Pompeii changed the way it admits visitors, and the new rules matter more than the drive. According to the park's timetables and tickets page:
- Tickets are personal, issued in the visitor's name, and the site has a daily limit of 20,000 entries.
- Time bands apply in the busy season. From 16 March to 14 October, up to 15,000 visitors are admitted between 9.00 and 13.00, and up to 5,000 between 13.00 and 17.30.
- Prices from 12 January 2026 are €20 for Pompeii Express, the ancient city only, and €25 for Pompeii+, which adds the suburban villas, including the Villa of the Mysteries, and Villa Regina at Boscoreale, with the shuttle bus. Each ticket is valid for one entry, so you cannot leave and come back on the same ticket.
- Opening hours are 9.00 to 17.00 from 15 October to 15 March, with last entry at 15.30, and 9.00 to 19.00 from 16 March to 14 October, with last entry at 17.30. The site is closed on 25 December and 1 January.
For a day from Rome, those last-entry times are the real deadline. In winter, a car that leaves Rome at 10 a.m. reaches Pompeii at around 12.45 on a clear road, which leaves less than three hours before the gates stop admitting visitors. Buy tickets online in advance, in each traveller's name, and build the departure time backwards from the slot you want.
Three entrances, and which one the car should use
The park lists three entrances to the ancient city: Porta Marina on Via Villa dei Misteri, Piazza Esedra on Piazza Porta Marina Inferiore, and Piazza Anfiteatro on Piazza Immacolata, at the opposite end of the site near the amphitheatre.
That geography is one of the quiet advantages of a car. You can be dropped at one entrance and collected at another, which saves walking back across the whole site in the afternoon heat. Tell the desk which ticket you hold and which part of the city you want to see first, and the partner will plan the drop and the pickup point. Pompeii is large and paved with uneven ancient stone, so comfortable shoes and water matter more than a fixed route.
A realistic day plan from Rome
This is an example, not a promise of road conditions. It uses the routed clear-road time and adds margin.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 7.00 | Pickup at your hotel in Rome |
| about 8.30 | Coffee stop on the A1 |
| about 9.45 to 10.00 | Arrival at your Pompeii entrance |
| 10.00 to 13.30 | Visit the ancient city, about three and a half hours |
| 13.30 to 14.30 | Lunch near the site, or a short drive to Herculaneum instead |
| 14.30 | Depart for Rome |
| about 17.30 to 18.00 | Back at your hotel in Rome |
That is a long day of ten to eleven hours with the car. Children and older travellers often find it easier to break the journey, either by staying a night near Naples or by making Pompeii the stop on a one-way transfer south.
Herculaneum: the smaller, closer alternative
Herculaneum, buried by the same eruption, lies between Naples and Pompeii, about 223 km (139 mi) from central Rome by road and some 16 km (10 mi) before Pompeii. It is much smaller and easier to see properly in two hours, which suits a day trip from Rome that does not want to be rushed. Check opening times and tickets with the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum before you go.
Some travellers do both sites in one day. From Rome, that is ambitious: two sites, two sets of security checks and five and a half hours of driving. If you want both, an overnight in Naples or Sorrento makes it a pleasure rather than an endurance test.
The train, compared fairly
Trenitalia's Rome to Pompeii by train page describes several options from Roma Termini: direct Frecciarossa trains on selected days, high-speed trains to Naples with an onward regional connection, and Frecce plus PompeiLink, a combined train and bus service to the site. On Trenitalia's journey planner, checked for a weekday in November 2026, the fastest Termini to Pompei Scavi solutions with PompeiLink took about 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 32 minutes, with fares from about €24 to €32 per person for the departures shown.
The park's own page lists the local alternatives too: the Circumvesuviana Napoli-Sorrento line to Pompei Villa dei Misteri for the Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra entrances, the Napoli-Poggiomarino line to Pompei Santuario for Piazza Anfiteatro, and the mainline Napoli-Salerno trains to Pompei, with PompeiLink connecting the station to the site in about 15 minutes.
When the train is the better choice. One or two travellers, light bags, a hotel near Termini and a willingness to change trains. It is quicker door to door than many expect and costs far less per person than a car for two.
When the car is the better choice. Families with children, groups who would pay for four or more train tickets, anyone with limited mobility who would rather not manage station changes, and every traveller carrying luggage to a hotel further south. The car also lets you choose the entrance and leave when you are ready, not when the next connection runs.
What a driver costs from Rome
There are two sensible ways to book.
A there-and-back day from Rome, by the hour. Rome hourly rates are on the Rome price list: US$85 an hour in a business sedan, US$110 in a business SUV, US$140 in a first class sedan, US$130 in a first class SUV and US$170 in an Executive Sprinter, all per vehicle with a three-hour minimum. Hourly bookings run up to 12 hours at checkout, which covers the day plan above. The eight-hour full-day chauffeur, from US$630 in a business sedan to US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter, is usually too short for Pompeii from Rome once you count the driving. Motorway tolls are billed at cost.
A one-way transfer south with a Pompeii stop. Rome to Sorrento or Positano via Pompeii is not on the published list, so enter it in the web booker with the stop and the desk returns a fixed price per vehicle in US dollars. This is the plan we suggest most often: the drive does double duty, your luggage stays locked in the car while you walk the site, and the evening is spent on the coast rather than on the A1.
If you are already staying on the Amalfi Coast, our Amalfi Coast and Naples service has a published eight-hour Pompeii day trip from US$665 in a business sedan to US$1,325 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle.
Straight from the plane: Pompeii on arrival day
Some travellers land at Fiumicino on an overnight flight and head south the same day rather than checking into Rome first. From FCO to Pompeii is about 260 km (162 mi), roughly 3 hours 5 minutes on a clear road, routed on OSRM, because the airport sits west of Rome and the car has to cross or skirt the city first.
It can work, with two cautions. Overnight flights from North America land in the morning, and passport control and baggage claim take time before you are even in the car. And after a night in the air, three hours on a motorway followed by three hours on ancient paving is a lot to ask. If you want to try it, book the transfer from Fiumicino with the stop at Pompeii and the coast hotel as the destination, so the chauffeur tracks the flight and the day can bend around a late landing. Our airport transfers page explains how the meeting works, and the city to city car service covers long one-way drives like this one. If the plan is to stay in Rome first, the Rome car service page lists every airport fare, and hourly chauffeur bookings cover the Pompeii day later in the week.
Choosing the vehicle
The fleet page gives capacity by class. A business sedan or first class sedan carries three passengers and two bags, enough for a couple on a day trip. A business SUV or first class SUV carries six passengers and six bags, and is the right choice for a family or for anyone moving hotels with full-size cases. An Executive Sprinter carries twelve passengers and twelve bags; see Sprinter van with driver. Child and booster seats are fitted on request before pickup.
Tips for the day
- Book tickets first, then the car. The ticket slot decides the departure time.
- Start early in summer. The busiest admissions band runs until 13.00, and the heat builds through the afternoon.
- Leave margin in winter. With last entry at 15.30 from mid-October to mid-March, a late start can cut the visit short.
- Travel light into the site. On a one-way transfer, your suitcases stay with the vehicle while you visit, so you walk the ruins with a day bag only.
- Gratuity is included. Standard gratuity is already in every Elly8.net fare. Tolls and any parking are billed at cost.
For a broader menu of shorter outings, see our Rome day trips guide, and if Naples itself is on your list, our Rome to Naples guide covers the drive and the fast train. Tips on what to expect from a driver in Italy are in our guide to hiring a private driver in Rome.
How to book
- Enter your Rome hotel as pickup, and Pompeii, or your coast hotel with a Pompeii stop, as the destination.
- Choose the vehicle and, for a return day, the number of hours.
- Reserve and receive confirmation by email.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to drive from Rome to Pompeii?
About 2 hours 40 minutes on a clear road for roughly 235 km (146 mi), routed on the public OSRM network from Rome's historic centre to the site. Traffic around Rome and Naples can add time, so plan the departure around your ticket slot and Pompeii's last entry.
Can you do Rome to Pompeii as a day trip?
Yes, but it is a long day of ten to eleven hours with the car, including more than five hours of driving. An hourly booking of up to 12 hours fits it. Many travellers prefer a one-way transfer to Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast with a stop at Pompeii.
What does a Pompeii ticket cost in 2026?
The park lists €20 for Pompeii Express, the ancient city only, and €25 for Pompeii+, which adds the suburban villas and the shuttle, from 12 January 2026. Tickets are personal, valid for one entry, and subject to a daily limit of 20,000 visitors.
What time is the last entry at Pompeii?
From 15 October to 15 March the site opens at 9.00, with last entry at 15.30 and closing at 17.00. From 16 March to 14 October it opens at 9.00, with last entry at 17.30 and closing at 19.00. It is closed on 25 December and 1 January.
Is the train cheaper than a driver from Rome to Pompeii?
For one or two people, yes. Trenitalia's fastest solutions with PompeiLink took about 2 hours 20 minutes and cost about €24 to €32 per person on the weekday we checked. A driver is priced per vehicle, so it becomes competitive for families and groups and is easier with luggage.
Can the driver wait while we visit Pompeii?
Yes. On an hourly booking the car waits for you and can collect you at a different entrance from the one where you were dropped. On a one-way transfer south, your luggage stays in the locked car while you visit.
