From Rome to the Amalfi Coast, a private car takes about 3 hours 25 minutes on a clear road from the historic centre to Positano, about 269 km (167 mi), with no changes. The train is faster on its first leg, about 55 minutes from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale on Italo's nonstop, but no train reaches the coast: you change in Naples for the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento and a bus, or in Salerno for a ferry.
For American and Canadian travellers the choice usually comes down to the day you are travelling. Leaving Rome after a few days there, rested and with time, the train via Naples or Salerno works well for a couple. Landing at Fiumicino off an overnight flight with a family and four suitcases, one car from arrivals to the hotel is the easier day. On the coast, Elly8.net fares are fixed: Naples Airport (NAP) to Positano from US$280, useful for the flight home.
Is it better to take a car or the train from Rome to the Amalfi Coast?
Take the train if you are one or two travellers with light bags, leaving Rome rested: Italo reaches Naples in about 55 minutes and Salerno in about 1 hour 39 minutes. Take a car for families, groups, heavy luggage or arrival day from Fiumicino: about 3 hours 25 minutes to Positano, door to door, with one vehicle.
Most of the difference is not speed but effort. The rail plan has three or four legs and each change is made on foot with luggage; the car has one. On paper, the rail plan can be quicker in the middle of the day; in practice, waits between connections and the final stretch to a cliffside hotel close much of the gap.

The drive from Rome: distances and times
These are routed estimates from the public OSRM road network on a clear road. Traffic leaving Rome, around Naples and on the coast road in summer can add a good deal.
| From | To | Distance | Clear-road drive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rome historic centre | Positano | 269 km / 167 mi | about 3 h 25 min |
| Rome historic centre | Amalfi | 275 km / 171 mi | about 3 h 15 min |
| Rome historic centre | Ravello | 265 km / 165 mi | about 3 h 20 min |
| Rome historic centre | Sorrento | 260 km / 161 mi | about 3 h 15 min |
| Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) | Positano | 296 km / 184 mi | about 3 h 50 min |
| Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) | Amalfi | 301 km / 187 mi | about 3 h 45 min |
Most of the route is motorway south past Naples; the last part is the cliff road, where pace depends on buses and bends. A comfort stop on the way is normal, and a longer stop at Pompeii fits naturally; our Rome to Positano by private car guide sets out the stops and a slower coastal alternative.
Plan A by rail: Rome, Naples, Sorrento, then the bus
Rome to Naples. Italo gives its fastest Rome to Naples time as 55 minutes, with tickets from €14.90; Trenitalia runs the route too. Fares rise as trains fill, so buy ahead and choose a changeable ticket if your flight could be late.
Naples to Sorrento. From Napoli Garibaldi, next to Napoli Centrale, the Circumvesuviana runs to Sorrento every 30 minutes on the EAV timetable in force from 17 October 2026, in about 70 minutes, with the last departure at 22:03. It is a commuter line with many stops, not an intercity train.
Sorrento to the coast. SITA buses run from Sorrento station along the cliffs to Positano and Amalfi. By road, Sorrento centre to Positano is about 16 km (10 mi).
This plan suits hotels in Sorrento best, and it adds up to a long day for Positano or Amalfi with full-size bags.
Plan B by rail: Rome to Salerno, then the ferry
High-speed trains continue past Naples to Salerno. Italo's Rome to Salerno page gives its fastest time as 1 hour 39 minutes, from €14.90. From Salerno, ferries run along the coast: Travelmar describes boarding at Salerno's Concordia port and reaching Positano in about an hour, with Positano to Amalfi a further 25 minutes.
Plan B is the more scenic arrival and avoids the Circumvesuviana, but boats run to a timetable and depend on the sea. Check sailings close to your travel date and have a road plan in reserve. By road, Amalfi is about 27 km (17 mi) from Salerno station, roughly 30 minutes on a clear road.
Arriving at Fiumicino and heading straight south
Many itineraries from North America land in Rome and go straight to the coast. If you take the train, the first leg is the Leonardo Express, which Trenitalia gives as 32 minutes nonstop from the airport to Roma Termini, every 15 minutes, for €14. Then the high-speed train to Naples or Salerno, then the coast legs above: four rail or road legs after a transatlantic flight.
The car from Fiumicino is about 296 km (184 mi) and roughly 3 hours 50 minutes to Positano on a clear road. It is a long ride, but it is one ride: the chauffeur meets you in arrivals with a name board after passport control and baggage claim, the bags go in the boot once, and children can sleep in fitted seats. On a day when you have already been travelling since the evening before, that difference is the whole case.
There is a third plan worth considering: spend the first night in Rome. Fiumicino to the historic centre costs from US$180 in a business sedan on the Rome car service, and you travel south the next morning, rested, by whichever plan suits.
The two days side by side
It helps to picture the day rather than the timetable. Take a family of four flying overnight from New York to Fiumicino, landing mid-morning, with a hotel in Positano.
By rail. Passport control and bags, then the Leonardo Express to Termini, 32 minutes once you are on board. A wait for the high-speed train, then about 55 minutes to Naples on the fastest Italo service. A walk across Piazza Garibaldi with four suitcases to the Circumvesuviana, about 70 minutes to Sorrento, a wait for the SITA bus, the ride along the cliffs, and finally the walk from the bus stop to the hotel entrance. That is at least five separate legs, three ticket purchases and every change made by two tired adults with two tired children and the luggage.
By car. Passport control and bags, then the chauffeur with a name board in arrivals. The cases go into a business SUV once, the children sit in seats fitted before pickup, and the car stops where you want a break. About 3 hours 50 minutes later on a clear road, the chauffeur helps carry the bags to the hotel entrance.
For a rested couple with two carry-ons leaving a Rome hotel at 10 am, the same rail day is easy and pleasant, and the ferry from Salerno makes it memorable. That is why there is no single right answer, only the right answer for your party.
Travelling south during the 2027 America's Cup
Plan further ahead if your trip falls in spring or summer 2027. The Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup is being sailed off the Naples waterfront in the spring and summer of 2027, with the America's Cup Match starting on 10 July 2027. Expect fuller hotels around the bay, busier trains into Naples and heavier traffic on the waterfront on race days. Booking the car early fixes the price and the vehicle; see event transportation.
Which plan for which traveller
| Traveller | Our honest pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Couple, carry-ons, a few days in Rome first | Train via Naples or Salerno | Fast, inexpensive, scenic; the changes are manageable |
| Couple landing at FCO on an overnight flight | Car, or a night in Rome first | Four legs after a long flight is hard work |
| Family of four or five with large cases | Car (business SUV) | One vehicle, child seats fitted, no changes |
| Group of eight to twelve | Car (Executive Sprinter) | One vehicle, 12 seats and 12 bags |
| Hotel in Sorrento, light bags | Train via Naples | The Circumvesuviana ends in Sorrento |
| Hotel in Ravello or Praiano | Car | Further from Sorrento station and the main piers |
| Arrival after 9 pm | Car | The last Circumvesuviana leaves Garibaldi at 22:03 |
Leaving from a Rome hotel
If you have spent a few days in Rome, the pickup is at your hotel door rather than an airport kerb, and the timing is yours. A mid-morning start usually misses the worst of the commuter traffic leaving the city, and the desk suggests a pickup time once it knows the hotel, the coast address and whether you want a stop. Give the exact hotel name and street: central Rome has limited traffic zones and narrow lanes, and the chauffeur needs to plan the nearest permitted kerb.
A stop turns the transfer into a day. Pompeii lies close to the motorway on the way south, about 235 km (146 mi) from central Rome and roughly 2 hours 40 minutes on a clear road, then about 36 km (22 mi) and 46 minutes on to Positano, by our routed estimates. Allow at least three hours inside the site, and buy entry in advance from the Archaeological Park of Pompeii before the day. The bags stay locked in the car while you walk the ruins.
What a private car from Rome costs
The Rome to Amalfi Coast transfer is not on our published price list, because it depends on the pickup (Fiumicino, Ciampino or a Rome hotel), the town on the coast and any stop on the way. Enter the addresses in the web booker and the desk returns a fixed price per vehicle, charged in US dollars, before you pay anything. Motorway tolls are billed at cost, as on every Elly8.net booking; standard gratuity is included. Book it as a city to city car service.
Once you are on the coast, the published fares apply:
| Amalfi Coast booking | Business Sedan | Business SUV | First Class Sedan | Executive Sprinter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NAP to Positano, one way | US$280 | US$365 | US$490 | US$730 |
| NAP to Positano, round trip | US$535 | US$695 | US$935 | US$1,390 |
| By the hour, 3-hour minimum | US$90 / hour | US$115 / hour | US$145 / hour | US$180 / hour |
| Day trip to Pompeii, 8 hours | US$665 | US$850 | US$1,070 | US$1,325 |
Prices are per vehicle, never per person. As arithmetic for comparison only, a business SUV seats six with six bags, so a family of five compares one fixed vehicle price with five sets of train and bus tickets plus the effort of the changes.
Rome in, Naples out
The most comfortable pattern for many travellers is open-jaw: fly into Rome, travel south once, and fly home from Naples International Airport (NAP). The coast to NAP is about 62 km (38 mi), roughly 70 minutes on a clear road, and the Elly8.net fare is the same in either direction, from US$280 in a business sedan to US$730 in an Executive Sprinter. You never have to go back north with your luggage. See airport transfers.
If the flight home leaves from Rome instead, book the return to Rome in the web booker when you book the trip south, so both long legs are fixed before you leave home.
Practical notes for the day of travel
- Licensed cars only. Rides on the Amalfi Coast and in Naples are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Licensed hire cars with driver are exempt from the coast road's alternating-plate restriction on restricted days, under the 2026 ANAS rules published by the Comune di Praiano.
- Size the vehicle by bags. On the fleet page, a business sedan carries three passengers and two bags; a business SUV six and six; an Executive Sprinter twelve and twelve.
- Tell us the exact hotel. Many Positano hotels are reached by steps from the road; the chauffeur helps with bags to the entrance.
- Flight tracking. For a pickup at Fiumicino, the chauffeur tracks the landing, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary.
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 10% at 72 hours or less; 50% at 48 hours or less; 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, per the cancellation policy.
If you will start from Naples rather than Rome, our guide to Naples to the Amalfi Coast by train or driver covers the local options in detail.
