The best Edinburgh day trip depends on what you came to Scotland for. Loch Lomond and the Trossachs give you the classic Highland scenery without the long haul north, Stirling and Doune put three centuries of Scottish royalty within an hour of the New Town, St Andrews is the pilgrimage for golfers, and Rosslyn Chapel or Linlithgow Palace fit into a morning. A private driver turns each of these into a door-to-door day with no coach timetable and no driving on the left.
Elly8.net books these days at fixed, all-in prices per vehicle, charged in US dollars. The ten-hour Loch Lomond and the Trossachs day costs from US$830 in a business sedan to US$1,660 in an Executive Sprinter, and a full-day chauffeur for any other route costs from US$665 to US$1,325. Rides in Edinburgh are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
What is the best day trip from Edinburgh with a private driver?
For scenery, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, about 113 km (70 mi) west, is the signature day. For history, Stirling Castle and Doune Castle sit 63 to 70 km (39 to 43 mi) away. Golfers head 85 km (53 mi) to St Andrews. Rosslyn Chapel, 13 km (8 mi) south, fits into half a day.
All distances in this guide are routed estimates from the New Town, made with the public OSRM router for a clear road. Real drive times are longer on weekday mornings around the city bypass, on Murrayfield match days on the A8, and during the August festivals. The fare does not change with traffic.

Loch Lomond and the Trossachs: the signature ten-hour day
This is the day most North American visitors picture when they think of Scotland, and it is the one Elly8.net sells as a fixed package. The drive west to Balloch at the southern tip of Loch Lomond is about 113 km (70 mi), roughly an hour and 35 minutes on a clear road. From there the shore road continues north to the conservation village of Luss, about 125 km (78 mi) from the New Town, where the loch is at its widest and the hills close in.
The return goes through the Trossachs rather than back the same way. From Balloch to Callander, the gateway town on the eastern edge of the national park, is about 45 km (28 mi), and Callander to Edinburgh about 83 km (52 mi). That loop takes in the wooded lochs and hill passes that made the area famous long before anyone printed a postcard of it. Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park publishes visitor information, parking rules and seasonal advice for the lochside villages.
The package runs for ten hours and costs from US$830 in a business sedan, US$1,060 in a business SUV, US$1,245 in a First Class SUV and US$1,335 in a First Class Sedan, to US$1,660 in an Executive Sprinter for a group. Ten hours sounds generous until you add a boat trip on the loch, lunch, a walk at Luss and a stop in Callander; it is the right length for the day, not a padded one.
Stirling, Doune and the Kelpies: a day of castles
If you came for history rather than scenery, head north-west up the M9. Stirling Castle, about 63 km (39 mi) from the New Town, holds the Great Hall and the Royal Palace that Historic Environment Scotland describes as the childhood home of Mary Queen of Scots. Entry is by tickets for a specific date and time, so book the slot first and send it to us; the chauffeur plans the departure around it.
Doune Castle is about 13 km (8 mi) beyond Stirling. It is a medieval courtyard castle, and Historic Environment Scotland notes it has featured in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Game of Thrones and Outlander, which explains the number of fans who ask for it by name. It also sells timed tickets.
On the way back, the Kelpies, two giant horse-head sculptures by the artist Andy Scott at The Helix park in Falkirk, are about 39 km (24 mi) from the New Town and make a natural last stop. The Falkirk Wheel, the rotating boat lift, is close by at about 44 km (28 mi). Stirling, Doune and the Kelpies make a comfortable full day; book it as a full-day chauffeur, from US$665 in a business sedan to US$1,325 in a Sprinter.
St Andrews and the East Neuk of Fife
St Andrews, the home of golf, is about 85 km (53 mi) from the New Town across the Queensferry Crossing, roughly an hour and 20 minutes on a clear road. From Edinburgh Airport it is about 76 km (47 mi), which suits golfers who want to go straight from a transatlantic arrival to their hotel. St Andrews Links manages the Old Course and the other links and publishes tee-time and visitor information.
Non-golfers in the group are not short of things to do: the cathedral ruins, the castle, the West Sands beach and the town's university quarter fill a day. Continue along the coast to the fishing villages of the East Neuk; Crail is about 17 km (11 mi) south-east of St Andrews. Golf bags change the vehicle choice. A business sedan takes two bags, so three golfers with clubs and a change of clothes belong in a Business SUV or First Class SUV, which carry six passengers and six bags.
The Open returns to the Old Course in July 2027. During the championship, roads into the town are tightly managed and spectator transport follows official arrangements, so treat a St Andrews day that week as a different booking, made early and planned around the drop-off points the organisers publish.
Half days close to the city
Not every outing needs a full day, and the hourly chauffeur service, from US$90 an hour in a business sedan to US$180 in a Sprinter with a 3-hour minimum, covers the short ones well.
Rosslyn Chapel. About 13 km (8 mi) south of the New Town, roughly 22 minutes on a clear road. Rosslyn Chapel was founded in 1446, is still a place of worship and lists adult admission at £12. Its carvings drew a new audience after The Da Vinci Code, and a morning visit is usually quieter.
Linlithgow Palace. About 28 km (18 mi) west, the ruined royal palace that Historic Environment Scotland calls the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. It sits on the way to Stirling, so it can be added to the castle day.
North Berwick. About 45 km (28 mi) east along the coast, with sandy beaches, golf and the Scottish Seabird Centre looking out to the Bass Rock.
The Borders. Melrose Abbey is about 64 km (40 mi) south, and a day among the Border abbeys and mill towns is a gentler alternative to the Highlands; book it as a full day.
In the city itself, the private city highlights tour, from US$360 in a business sedan to US$720 in a Sprinter, covers the castle, the Royal Mile, Holyrood, Calton Hill and the New Town with the chauffeur waiting while you walk. See private city tours.
Glencoe and the far Highlands: be honest about the distance
Glencoe is the request we talk people out of as a day trip more than any other. It is about 188 km (117 mi) from the New Town, about 2 hours 45 minutes each way on a clear road, which means over five and a half hours in the car before anyone has stepped out to look at a mountain. It can be done in a long full day, but most travellers enjoy it far more as an overnight, or as one stop on a city to city drive north. The web booker quotes these longer routes at a fixed price before you pay.

The First Class Sedan costs US$1,335 for the Loch Lomond day and US$1,070 for a full day. All published packages are on the Edinburgh page and the packages page.
Before the first day trip: arriving from North America
Most transatlantic flights reach Edinburgh Airport early in the morning, and the temptation is to start sightseeing straight away. Resist it for the long days. Put Rosslyn or the city tour on arrival day and save Loch Lomond or St Andrews for when everyone has slept.
Edinburgh Airport has one terminal. Elly8.net chauffeurs track the flight and wait in arrivals with a name board, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. The transfer to the New Town costs from US$130 in a business sedan to US$340 in an Executive Sprinter, the same fixed price in either direction; see airport transfers.
The public options are good for light travellers. The Airlink 100 costs £6.00 for an adult single to the city, and the tram runs from the terminal through Haymarket to Princes Street. Edinburgh Airport says its official taxi rank, run by Capital Cars, is in the East Terminus a short walk from arrivals, and that other operators, including app-booked cars, use the charged pickup zone on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park or a free zone in the long stay car park. One traveller with a carry-on should take the bus or the tram. A family of four with suitcases after an overnight flight is the case for a car.
On tipping: Elly8.net fares already include a standard gratuity, so there is nothing to calculate at the end of a long day in the hills.
Why not just rent a car?
Plenty of visitors do, and on a two-week Highland road trip it can make sense. For day trips from Edinburgh the balance tips the other way. Scotland drives on the left, the city centre has a one-way grid, bus gates and scarce parking, lochside villages fill their car parks early in summer, and the driver is the one person who cannot enjoy the view on a single-track road. A whisky tasting is also off the table for whoever holds the keys. With a chauffeur, everyone gets the day; the chauffeur follows Scottish rules on everything inside the vehicle. Our chauffeur vs car rental guide sets out the trade-offs in more detail.
Choosing the vehicle
| Vehicle class | Passengers | Bags | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 | 2 | A couple or three friends with day bags |
| First Class Sedan | 3 | 2 | The same group in an S-Class |
| Business SUV / Van | 6 | 6 | Families and golfers with clubs |
| First Class SUV | 6 | 6 | Golf groups wanting more comfort |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 | 12 | Extended families, clubs, corporate groups |
For a day trip, bags mostly means coats, walking boots and shopping, but golf clubs and child seats take real space. Ask for child or booster seats when you book and the partner fits them before pickup. The fleet page shows every class.
Timing tips through the year
Summer. Long daylight makes the ten-hour loch day easy, but lochside villages and castle car parks are at their busiest. Start early.
August. The festivals fill the city; plan day trips for mornings and keep evenings free, or the other way round, because getting back into the Old Town is slow. Hourly evening cars are the practical answer.
Winter. Days are short, so pick shorter routes such as Stirling, Linlithgow or Rosslyn, and leave the Trossachs loop for spring.
Big dates. The Tour de France starts in Edinburgh in July 2027 with rolling road closures, and The Open follows at St Andrews later that month. Book those weeks early.
Travel agents and hotel concierges can book these days for clients on account through travel agent accounts. If you are building a longer European trip, the same desk plans Copenhagen day tours with a driver and a Brussels day trip by private car, and runs the London car service, Manchester chauffeur and Dublin car service.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a private day trip from Edinburgh?
The Loch Lomond and the Trossachs package costs from US$830 in a business sedan to US$1,660 in an Executive Sprinter for ten hours. A full-day chauffeur for Stirling, St Andrews or the Borders costs from US$665 to US$1,325. Prices are per vehicle and include the chauffeur, taxes and a standard gratuity.
Can we do Stirling Castle and Doune Castle in one day?
Yes. Stirling is about 63 km (39 mi) from the New Town and Doune about 13 km (8 mi) further on. Both sell timed tickets through Historic Environment Scotland, so book the slots, send us the times and the chauffeur plans the day, with the Kelpies on the way home.
Is Glencoe realistic as a day trip from Edinburgh?
It is possible but long: about 188 km (117 mi) each way, roughly 2 hours 45 minutes on a clear road, so over five and a half hours of driving. Most travellers prefer it as an overnight or a stop on a longer drive north. The web booker quotes it at a fixed price.
Which vehicle do we need for golf clubs?
A business sedan carries two bags, so for three or more golfers choose a Business SUV or First Class SUV, which carry six passengers and six bags, or an Executive Sprinter for larger groups. St Andrews is about 85 km (53 mi) from the New Town.
Is a tip included?
Yes. Every Elly8.net fare includes a standard gratuity, along with the chauffeur, vehicle and taxes. Parking and any road charges are billed at cost. Admission tickets, boat trips and meals are paid separately, and the chauffeur's time waiting during your visits is part of the booked hours.
What happens if our flight is late on arrival day?
The chauffeur tracks the flight and waits after a tracked landing at no extra charge. If a delay pushes back a day trip planned for later, message the 24/7 desk and we move the pickup; cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup.
