The best Copenhagen day tours leave the city altogether. North along the Øresund coast are Kronborg Castle, the setting of Hamlet, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. Inland, Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød holds the Museum of National History. To the west, Roskilde has the Viking Ship Museum and the royal burial church of Denmark's kings and queens. Each is 40 to 50 minutes by road from Kongens Nytorv, and with a private driver you can put two or three of them into one day.
Elly8.net sells the signature route, Kronborg Castle and the Danish Riviera, as a six-hour package from US$500 in a business sedan to US$995 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. Any other route runs as a full-day chauffeur, from US$665 to US$1,325, or by the hour. Rides in Copenhagen are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
What is the best day tour from Copenhagen?
For a first visit, the coast road north to Kronborg Castle in Helsingør, about 48 km (30 mi) from Kongens Nytorv, with a stop at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. It is the signature six-hour Elly8.net day. History lovers add Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød; Viking fans head west to Roskilde instead.
Distances below are routed estimates from Kongens Nytorv using the public OSRM router, for a clear road. Weekday rush hours on the northbound motorway and summer weekends on the coast road add time; the fixed price does not change.

Route 1: Kronborg Castle and the Danish Riviera
This is the day most visitors want, and it is the one Elly8.net prices as a package. The coast road north of the city is the stretch Danes call the Danish Riviera, lined with harbour towns, beach villas and views across the water to Sweden.
Karen Blixen Museum. At Rungsted, about 29 km (18 mi) from the centre, the Karen Blixen Museum is the museum of the Danish writer, on Rungsted Strandvej. It makes a short first stop on the way north.
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. About 39 km (25 mi) from the centre at Humlebæk, Louisiana is known as much for its sculpture park and setting above the sea as for its collection. Its published hours are 11.00 to 22.00 Tuesday to Friday and 11.00 to 18.00 at weekends, and it is closed on Mondays.
Kronborg Castle. About 10 km (6 mi) further north, in Helsingør, Kronborg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the castle Shakespeare used for Hamlet. Its website lists an adult ticket at DKK 150, or DKK 135 bought online, with children free, and shows the castle closed on Mondays, with hours on other days of 10.00 to 16.00 or 17.00. The castle's own guide runs from the cellars where Holger the Dane sits to the top of the cannon tower, with its view over the Øresund; children tend to remember both.
The six-hour package covers the coast road, the museum, lunch and the castle. It costs from US$500 in a business sedan, US$635 in a business SUV, US$750 in a First Class SUV and US$805 in a First Class Sedan, to US$995 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle, all-in. Museum and castle tickets are bought separately.
Route 2: the castles of North Zealand
If Kronborg is the castle of legend, Frederiksborg is the castle of state. It stands in Hillerød, about 40 km (25 mi) from the centre, and houses the Museum of National History, with the castle gardens alongside. Its website says the castle and museum are open every day of the year.
Frederiksborg and Kronborg are about 27 km (17 mi) apart, roughly 33 minutes on a clear road, and from Kronborg the coast road back passes Louisiana, about 10 km (6 mi) south of the castle. Copenhagen, Frederiksborg, Kronborg, Louisiana and back is a full day, and a full-day chauffeur, from US$665 in a business sedan to US$1,325 in a Sprinter, gives you the time to do it without watching the clock. Avoid Mondays, when both Kronborg and Louisiana are closed; Frederiksborg makes Monday the day to go there on its own.
Route 3: Roskilde, Vikings and royal tombs
West of the city, Roskilde is about 37 km (23 mi) from Kongens Nytorv. The Viking Ship Museum displays five Viking ships, known as the Skuldelev ships, alongside full-size reconstructions from its own boatyard, and offers boat trips with oars and sails on Roskilde Fjord every day from 1 May to 30 September.
A short drive up the hill, Roskilde Cathedral describes itself as Denmark's royal burial church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and still an active parish church, with the tombs of Danish monarchs in its chapels. Viking ships in the morning and the cathedral after lunch make an easy day. Roskilde to Frederiksborg is about 40 km (25 mi) if you want to add a castle on the way back.
Roskilde Festival, one of Europe's big music festivals, takes over the area at the end of June. If your trip falls that week, expect heavy traffic around the town and plan Roskilde for another day.
Route 4: across the bridge to Sweden
Malmö is about 40 km (25 mi) from the centre over the Øresund Bridge, and Lund about 20 km (12 mi) beyond it. It is a different country, so everyone needs a passport, and the bridge toll is billed at cost. Our Copenhagen to Malmö by car guide covers the drive, the border check and the stops in detail.
A sample six-hour coast day
Here is how the desk would typically shape the Kronborg package on a Tuesday to Saturday, working from the published opening hours. Treat it as a starting point rather than a timetable.
9.30, hotel pickup. The chauffeur meets you at the hotel door, or at an agreed corner if your street has no kerb space, and heads north out of the city.
10.20, Kronborg. Arriving soon after the castle opens at 10.00 gives you the castle rooms, the cellars and the tower before the midday groups. Allow about two hours.
12.30, lunch in Helsingør or on the coast. The chauffeur waits or comes back at a set time.
13.45, Louisiana. About 10 km (6 mi) and 17 minutes south of Kronborg on a clear road, the museum is open from 11.00, so an afternoon visit fits naturally. Allow at least an hour and a half for the galleries and the sculpture park.
15.30, back to Copenhagen. About 38 minutes to the centre on a clear road, which brings you back inside the six hours. If you would rather add the Karen Blixen Museum at Rungsted, about 11 km (7 mi) south of Louisiana, book a full day instead and nobody has to hurry.
Package, full day or hourly: which booking?
| Booking | Business Sedan | Business SUV | First Class SUV | Executive Sprinter | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kronborg and the Danish Riviera, 6 hours | US$500 | US$635 | US$750 | US$995 | The classic coast day |
| Full-day chauffeur | US$665 | US$850 | US$995 | US$1,325 | Frederiksborg and Kronborg, Roskilde, Malmö and Lund |
| By the hour, 3-hour minimum | US$90 per hour | US$115 per hour | US$135 per hour | US$180 per hour | One museum or a short outing |
| Private city highlights tour | US$360 | US$460 | US$540 | US$720 | Copenhagen itself |
Prices are per vehicle, not per person, and include the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes and a standard gratuity. Parking and tolls are billed at cost. The First Class Sedan costs US$805 for the Kronborg package and US$1,070 for a full day. All published fares are on the Copenhagen page and the packages page.
The city itself. The private city highlights tour covers Nyhavn, Amalienborg, the Little Mermaid on the Langelinie promenade, Christiansborg and Christianshavn, with the chauffeur waiting while you walk. Copenhagen is built for bikes and public transport, and kerb space for cars is limited, so the chauffeur agrees a pickup point at each stop. See private city tours.
Day tour by train, or by car?
Many of these places can be reached by public transport, and for a couple on a budget that is a fine way to do it. What a car changes is the joins. On a train day, each sight is a station walk away, and combining Louisiana, Kronborg and Frederiksborg means three separate legs and timetables. With a driver, the car goes from door to door, waits outside, and the order of the day can change at lunch.
The car also changes the cost picture for a group. The Kronborg package in a Business SUV is US$635 for up to six passengers; divided by six, that is about US$106 each, as arithmetic for comparison only. For two people, the train is far cheaper and we would say so.
For short city trips, the metro and taxis do the job; our guides to Uber in Copenhagen and the Copenhagen taxi compare them honestly.
Timing and practical tips
Avoid Mondays for the coast. Kronborg and Louisiana both list Monday as closed. Frederiksborg is open every day.
Start mid-morning. Leaving around 9.30 misses the worst of the northbound traffic and gets you to the first stop as it opens.
Book timed tickets yourself and send us the times. Kronborg sells cheaper tickets online, and special tours, such as its guided tours in English, have their own registration. The chauffeur plans the route around your slots.
Winter. Days are short, so keep to one or two stops. Kronborg lists a Christmas programme from 30 November to 19 December 2026, and Frederiksborg a winter Hans Christian Andersen exhibition; check each site's own calendar.
Children. Ask for child or booster seats when you book and give the ages; the partner fits them before pickup.
Cruise passengers. If you are starting or ending a Baltic cruise in Copenhagen, a day tour can double as the transfer between the ship and the airport or hotel. See cruise port transfers.
Choosing the vehicle
| Vehicle class | Passengers | Bags | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 | 2 | Couples and small families on a day trip |
| First Class Sedan | 3 | 2 | The same in an S-Class |
| Business SUV / Van | 6 | 6 | Families with strollers and child seats |
| First Class SUV | 6 | 6 | Families wanting more comfort |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 | 12 | Extended families, groups, corporate outings |
On a day tour, bags means coats, strollers and shopping. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer; the fleet page shows every class. Planning a longer Scandinavian trip? The same desk runs the Stockholm chauffeur, the Oslo chauffeur and Hamburg and Berlin car services, and travel agents book on account through travel agent accounts.
