A Copenhagen taxi is easy to find, licensed, metered and paid by card, and for most short trips across the city it is a sensible choice. It is not cheap by North American standards: a daytime ride of 10 km lasting 12 minutes costs around DKK 230 with one of the large companies, and the evening rate is higher. Since 2025 you can also order the same licensed taxis through Uber, which matters less than most visitors expect, because the prices follow the same Danish rules.
This guide walks through the meter line by line, shows what common rides cost on a published tariff, and says plainly when the metro, a taxi or a pre-booked car is the right call. For reference, a fixed Elly8.net transfer from Copenhagen Airport (CPH) to Kongens Nytorv costs from US$115 in a business sedan to US$300 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle.
How much is a taxi in Copenhagen?
On TAXA 4x35's published tariff, a weekday daytime fare is DKK 39 to start plus DKK 11 per km and DKK 6.75 per minute. Evenings, weekends and holidays cost DKK 49 plus DKK 14.70 per km and DKK 7 per minute. Its "door price" for a 10 km, 12-minute ride is DKK 230 by day and DKK 280 at night.
Copenhagen taxis are run by several companies, each setting its own tariff within the Danish taxi rules, so prices differ slightly between them. We use TAXA 4x35's figures throughout because the company publishes a complete, dated tariff, valid from 1 December 2023. Treat the numbers as a representative example rather than the price of every cab on the rank.

The meter, line by line
| TAXA 4x35 tariff | Start fee | Per km | Per minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car, 1-4 passengers, weekdays 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. | DKK 39 | DKK 11 | DKK 6.75 |
| Car, 1-4 passengers, evenings, weekends, holidays | DKK 49 | DKK 14.70 | DKK 7 |
| Minibus, 5-8 passengers, weekdays 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. | DKK 69 | DKK 15.40 | DKK 6.70 |
| Minibus, 5-8 passengers, evenings, weekends, holidays | DKK 79 | DKK 22 | DKK 7 |
| Car, Christmas and New Year dates | DKK 49 | DKK 16.21 | DKK 7.50 |
The same page lists supplements: DKK 20 for trips from the airport, DKK 25 for each bicycle or piece of baggage carried outside the vehicle, and, for trips over the bridges, a charge for both directions, DKK 410 for the Øresund Bridge and DKK 595 for the Great Belt Bridge. The Christmas and New Year tariff applies on 24 to 26 December and 31 December to 1 January.
The per-minute charge is the part that surprises visitors. In slow traffic the meter keeps running at DKK 6.75 to DKK 7 a minute, so the same trip costs more at rush hour than on a quiet Sunday morning, even before the evening rate starts.
Door prices: the comparison tool built into the law
Because every company combines a start fee, a distance price and a time price differently, comparing them by eye is hard. TAXA 4x35 explains that the Danish taxi legislation requires companies to display a "door price", defined as the average price of a 10 km trip lasting 12 minutes, so passengers can compare like with like. TAXA's door prices are DKK 230 on weekdays and DKK 280 in the evening and at weekends. Look for the door price on the taxi before you get in if you want to compare.
What typical Copenhagen rides cost
Here is the TAXA tariff applied to a few common trips, using routed clear-road distances and times from the public OSRM router. This is arithmetic on a published tariff for comparison, not a quote; real traffic adds minutes, and minutes add money.
| Trip | Routed distance and clear-road time | Weekday day rate | Evening or weekend rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kongens Nytorv to Copenhagen Central Station | 2 km, about 4 min | about DKK 88 | about DKK 106 |
| Kongens Nytorv to the Bella Center | 6 km, about 10 min | about DKK 173 | about DKK 207 |
| Kongens Nytorv to Hellerup | 7 km, about 13 min | about DKK 204 | about DKK 243 |
| Copenhagen Airport to Kongens Nytorv | 10 km, about 22 min | about DKK 318 with the airport supplement | about DKK 370 with the airport supplement |
On the airport run, a business sedan with Elly8.net costs US$115 fixed, with the chauffeur waiting inside the terminal, a standard gratuity and meet and greet included. Whether that is good value depends on who is travelling and what they are carrying, which is the rest of this guide.
How to get a taxi: ranks, phone, apps
Ranks. Taxis wait at marked ranks around the city and at the airport. The tariff is the same whether you take one from a rank or order it by phone or app.
Phone. TAXA 4x35 takes bookings around the clock on 35 35 35 35, and Dantaxi on +45 48 48 48 48. Bookings by phone run on the meter unless a fixed price is agreed.
Company apps. Booking in TAXA's app lets you choose a fixed price, calculated from the pickup and drop-off addresses, that will not rise if the trip runs into traffic. That is the closest a Copenhagen taxi gets to the certainty of a pre-booked car.
Uber. Uber launched in Copenhagen in early 2025 with licensed taxi drivers and announced the purchase of Dantaxi in May 2025, saying trips would be priced under the Danish taxi rules and shown before booking. The app is convenient if you already use it at home; it is not a cheaper tier of car. Our companion piece, Uber in Copenhagen vs taxi vs private car, covers the app side in detail.
Paying for the ride
Card payment is standard. TAXA 4x35 lists cash, credit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay in the car, with MobilePay available only for fixed-price trips booked in its app. Uber notes that limousines that pick up its requests have no card terminal and are paid in the app. Keep your receipt if a company or client is paying; for regular business travel, a corporate account with monthly invoicing removes the expense claim altogether.
The metro: the option that beats both
Before choosing between a taxi and a car, check whether you need either. The Copenhagen Metro takes 14 minutes from the airport to the centre and runs around the clock, and a 3-zone adult ticket between the centre and the airport costs DKK 30. Its City Pass, at DKK 100, covers zones 1 to 4 including the airport for 24 hours. Visit Copenhagen adds that trains to Central Station run every ten minutes in the daytime and take about 15 minutes.
For one person with a carry-on, the metro is quicker than a taxi to Kongens Nytorv and costs a fraction of the fare. We would take it.
When the taxi is the right choice
- Short hops in the evening between Nyhavn, Vesterbro and your hotel, when walking or cycling is not appealing.
- Rain and a short distance, where the start fee is most of the fare.
- Spontaneous trips you could not have planned, because a rank or an app is the fastest way to a car right now.
- Two travellers with light bags heading somewhere the metro does not reach directly.
When to pre-book a chauffeur instead
- Arrivals with luggage and children. A Business SUV carries six passengers and six bags for US$150 from CPH, with child seats fitted before pickup and the chauffeur in arrivals with a name board. Waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary.
- Groups. A minibus taxi uses a separate, higher tariff. An Executive Sprinter, for up to 12 passengers and 12 bags, costs US$300 fixed from the airport.
- A fixed budget in US dollars. The fare is set when you book, not when you arrive, and includes the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet.
- Busy nights. When Tivoli, a concert or a congress empties, every rank and app is stretched at once.
- Long trips. Malmö, the coast north to Kronborg, Roskilde; see our guides to Copenhagen to Malmö by car and Copenhagen day tours with a driver.
Hourly taxi or hourly chauffeur?
TAXA 4x35 also sells a taxi at a fixed hourly price, listed at DKK 600 an hour on weekdays and DKK 690 in the evening, at weekends and on holidays for an ordinary car, with a start fee added when the meter is used. Elly8.net's hourly chauffeur service costs US$90 an hour in a business sedan, US$115 in a business SUV and US$180 in an Executive Sprinter, as directed, with a 3-hour minimum. The two are not the same product: a pre-booked chauffeur is assigned in advance, holds a meeting point and comes with a chosen vehicle class, and the evening out and event night package, from US$450 in a business sedan to US$900 in a Sprinter, covers a whole night.
Christmas, Tivoli and the busiest nights
Christmas in Tivoli runs from 13 November to 3 January, and the evening crowds at the gardens' entrances, next to Central Station, make taxis scarce just when the weather turns. On 24 to 26 December and 31 December to 1 January, TAXA's higher Christmas and New Year tariff applies. If you are going to Tivoli with a family, agree a pickup point and time with a chauffeur before you go in. Congress days at the Bella Center work the same way: the metro has its own Bella Center stop, but delegates with bags or a tight schedule book conference transportation.
A worked example: a family of four from Toronto
Take two adults and two children aged eight and ten, landing at CPH at 8 a.m. on a weekday with four checked suitcases, staying at a hotel near Kongens Nytorv.
The metro. The adults need a 3-zone ticket each at DKK 30, and the Copenhagen Metro lets an adult bring two children under 12 for free, so the family rides for DKK 60. The catch is the luggage: four large cases, two children and a short walk from the station at the other end, after a night on a plane.
A taxi. On the TAXA tariff, the clear-road trip works out at about DKK 318, and more if the morning traffic is slow. An ordinary taxi carries up to four passengers, but four large suitcases may not all fit, and a child seat is something to ask about rather than assume.
A pre-booked car. An Elly8.net Business SUV, for six passengers and six bags, costs US$150 fixed, with the chauffeur waiting in arrivals, child seats fitted before pickup, and the price set before the family left Toronto.
There is no single right answer. A family travelling light should take the metro and spend the difference on lunch. A family with a car seat, a stroller and four cases is the case for the car.
A fair verdict
For a single traveller, the metro. For short city hops, a taxi from the rank or an app, ideally at a fixed app price. For arrivals with luggage, families, groups, busy nights and anything that has to run to a schedule, a pre-booked chauffeur at a fixed fare. Compare the general case on chauffeur vs taxi and chauffeur vs airport shuttle.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from Copenhagen Airport to the city centre?
It depends on the company, traffic and time of day. On TAXA 4x35's tariff, the 10 km, 22-minute clear-road trip to Kongens Nytorv works out at about DKK 318 on a weekday, including the DKK 20 airport supplement, and about DKK 370 in the evening. That is arithmetic, not a quote.
Are Copenhagen taxis metered?
Yes. The meter combines a start fee, a price per kilometre and a price per minute, with higher rates in the evening, at weekends and on holidays. Booking through a company app can give you a fixed price in advance that will not rise if traffic is slow.
What is a taxi door price in Denmark?
It is the average price of a 10 km trip lasting 12 minutes, which Danish taxi companies must display so passengers can compare them. TAXA 4x35 lists DKK 230 on weekdays and DKK 280 in the evening and at weekends.
Is a taxi or Uber better in Copenhagen?
They are often the same licensed taxi. Uber in Copenhagen works with licensed taxi drivers and prices trips under the Danish taxi rules. Use whichever app you prefer; the bigger choice is between an on-demand taxi, the metro and a pre-booked car.
When is a pre-booked car worth it in Copenhagen?
When you arrive with checked bags or children, travel as a group, need a fixed budget in US dollars, or are leaving a busy venue. An Elly8.net Business SUV from CPH costs US$150 for up to six passengers and six bags, with the chauffeur waiting inside.
Do taxis charge extra for the Øresund Bridge?
Yes. TAXA 4x35 lists a DKK 410 charge for the Øresund Bridge, covering both directions. On an Elly8.net booking to Malmö, the bridge toll is billed at cost on top of the fixed fare quoted in the web booker, and passports are needed for the crossing.
