Athens International Airport (ATH) sits about 34 km (21 mi) by road from Syntagma Square, and it is well connected. Metro Line 3 runs from the airport into the centre without a change, the X95 express bus runs to Syntagma 24 hours a day, the suburban railway goes to the central station, and yellow taxis charge a flat fare to the city centre. For one traveller with a carry-on and a hotel near a metro station, the train is quick and cheap, and we would say so at the desk.
A pre-booked private driver earns its fare in other cases: a family or group with full luggage, a hotel on a pedestrian lane in Plaka or out on the Riviera, a late-night landing, child seats, or a meeting soon after you land. With Elly8.net the transfer to Syntagma costs from US$150 in a business sedan to US$390 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed, all-in and per vehicle, and the chauffeur is waiting inside arrivals with your name.
Is the metro or a private driver better from Athens airport?
The metro is better for one or two light travellers going to a hotel near Line 3: a €9 ticket, no road traffic, no change. A private driver is better for families, groups, heavy bags, late arrivals, hotels away from the metro and anyone needing child seats, at a fixed US$150 to US$390 per vehicle.
The rest of this guide sets out each option with the published numbers, then works through common arrival situations so you can see which one fits yours.
The options, with the published numbers
| Option | Published price | Journey | Hours | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metro Line 3 to Syntagma | €9 single, €16 two-way (OASA) | Direct, no change | Metro runs 5 am to midnight, later at weekends | One or two travellers, light bags |
| Suburban railway to Larissis station | Same Metro Airport ticket (OASA) | About 45 min to the central station | Trains every 15 to 25 min to Doukissis Plakentias | Hotels near the railway station, onward trains |
| X95 express bus to Syntagma | €5.50 single (OASA) | About 60 min | 24 hours | Lowest cost, night arrivals |
| Yellow taxi from Exit 3 | €40 flat 05:00 to midnight, €55 midnight to 05:00 | Door to door, about 34 min clear road | 24 hours | Two or three people, walk-up trips |
| Elly8.net private driver | US$150 sedan to US$390 Sprinter, per vehicle | Door to door, met inside arrivals | 24 hours, pre-booked | Families, groups, bags, late flights, meetings |
The fares come from the OASA fare table, which lists the Metro Airport ticket at €9 full price, €4.50 discounted and €16 for a two-way ticket valid for 30 days, and the Airport Express bus at €5.50. The official City of Athens airport guide gives the flat taxi fares, which include all surcharges, the taxi rank location outside Exit 3, the X95's estimated 60-minute journey and the suburban railway's 45 minutes to Larissis station.
The metro: fast and simple, with two caveats
Line 3 is the obvious choice for a light traveller. You buy the Metro Airport ticket at the station, ride into the centre without changing, and step out at Syntagma under the Parliament. There is no road traffic to sit in, which matters at rush hour. The city's public transport guide says the metro runs daily from 5 am to midnight, with Lines 2 and 3 running until 2 am on Fridays and all night on Saturdays.
The first caveat is luggage. A large suitcase per person on a crowded train, then the walk from the station to your hotel along the uneven pavements of the old centre, is fine for some travellers and miserable for others after a ten-hour flight.
The second is evening works. The city guide currently warns of upgrade works on Line 3 between Panormou and Nomismatokopio, with those stations closing at 9.40 pm from Sunday to Thursday, airport trains running only as far as Agia Paraskevi after that time, and a temporary X20 replacement bus covering the gap. If you land in the evening, check the current notice before you rely on the metro, and allow extra time.
If you plan to use public transport heavily, OASA also sells a 3-day tourist ticket for €20 that includes one round trip to the airport, which is good value for a short city stay.
The X95 bus and the suburban railway
The X95 is the cheapest way into the city at €5.50 and the one that runs all night. Tickets are sold at the booth outside arrivals between Exits 4 and 5, according to the city guide. The trade-off is time: around an hour to Syntagma, longer in traffic, and your bags travelling with you on a public bus.
The suburban railway suits travellers heading to Larissis, the central railway station, for an onward train, or staying near it. The same Metro Airport ticket is valid on it, OASA notes, for the airport to Piraeus section.
The flat-fare taxi
The yellow taxi is a strong option and we say so plainly. €40 to the city centre in the day and €55 at night, all surcharges included, is a reasonable price for two or three people. The rank is outside Exit 3. In Athens, the City of Athens taxi guide notes, Uber operates as UberTaxi, which dispatches a yellow taxi, so the app is another way of getting the same car.
The limits are the size of a standard taxi, which struggles with four people and four large cases, the queue at the rank when several long-haul flights land together, and the absence of a booked child seat. A party of five or six needs two taxis. For a deeper look at the rank and the app, see our general chauffeur vs taxi and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft comparisons.
The private driver: what you pay for
You give us the flight number of the segment that lands in Athens. The chauffeur tracks it, adjusts to an early or late landing, and waits inside the arrivals hall with a name board; waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. Bags go straight into a vehicle sized for them, and the car goes to your hotel's door, or the nearest point a car can reach in pedestrian Plaka, with the chauffeur walking the bags in. See meet and greet and airport transfers for how arrivals work.
| Vehicle | Seats and bags | ATH to Syntagma, per vehicle | Round trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 passengers, 2 bags | US$150 | US$285 |
| Business SUV | 6 passengers, 6 bags | US$195 | US$375 |
| First Class SUV | 6 passengers, 6 bags | US$240 | US$460 |
| First Class Sedan | 3 passengers, 2 bags | US$265 | US$505 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 passengers, 12 bags | US$390 | US$745 |
Fares include the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet; tolls and parking are billed at cost. The same fixed fare applies in either direction, so the ride back to the airport costs the same. The clear-road drive is about 34 minutes; at rush hour or on a summer Friday, allow 50 minutes to an hour. The fare does not change with traffic.
Which one fits your arrival
Solo, carry-on, hotel near Syntagma. Take the metro. It is cheaper and quicker at rush hour.
A couple with two large cases. The flat-fare taxi at €40 is fair value; the metro is fine if you travel light. A business sedan at US$150 makes sense if you want to be met inside, or if your hotel is hard to find.
A family of four with luggage and young children. As arithmetic for comparison: four Metro Airport tickets at full price cost €36, and the taxi €40, but neither comes with child seats or room for four large cases. A Business SUV at US$195 per vehicle takes six passengers and six bags, with seats fitted before pickup.
A group of eight to twelve. Two or three taxis, or one Executive Sprinter at US$390 for the whole group, which keeps everyone and the bags together.
Landing after 11 pm. The night taxi fare rises to €55, the metro may be affected by the evening works, and the bus takes an hour. A booked car waiting in arrivals is the calm answer.
A hotel on the Riviera. Hotels in Glyfada and Vouliagmeni are not on Line 3. They are about 20 to 25 km (12 to 16 mi) from the airport by road, and the web booker gives a fixed price to any address on the coast.
Straight to a ship or ferry. Piraeus is about 49 km (30 mi) from the airport by our routing; Line 3 continues to the port, about 55 minutes from the airport according to the city guide, and the X96 express bus runs there too. Our guide to Athens to Piraeus covers that run in detail.
A meeting the same morning. A car lets you work or rest on the way and arrive composed. Companies with regular travel to Athens can open a corporate account with monthly invoicing and fixed fares in US dollars.
What the desk asks for when you book
Four details make an airport pickup go smoothly. The flight number of the leg that lands in Athens, so the chauffeur tracks the right aircraft. The number of passengers and bags, including strollers, golf bags or a wheelchair, so the vehicle is the right size. The children's ages, if you need child or booster seats. And the exact hotel address, because hotel names can be similar and some hotels sit on lanes a car cannot enter, in which case the chauffeur stops at the nearest permitted point and walks the bags in with you.
If you are arriving on a private flight, give us the handling agent instead of a terminal; see private jet and FBO transfers. If you would like the car to wait while you change money or buy a SIM card first, say so in the booking notes.
The way back to the airport
The same options run in reverse. For a flight home to North America we suggest reaching the terminal three hours before departure, two hours for a flight within Europe or to the islands. From Syntagma that usually means leaving three and a half to four hours before take-off with a car, and more if you take the metro with luggage at a busy time. The Elly8.net fare to the airport is the same fixed price as the fare from it, and booking the round trip together locks in both, from US$285 in a business sedan to US$745 in a Sprinter.
Paying and planning from North America
Currency. Metro, bus and taxi fares are paid in euros on the day. The Elly8.net fare is charged in US dollars to your card when you book, so the transfer is settled before you leave home.
Connections. Most travellers from the US and Canada reach Athens through a European hub. Give us the flight number of the final leg; if a connection is missed, message the 24/7 desk and the pickup moves to the new flight.
The first day. Arrival day is not the day for Delphi. Keep it light with a short walk around Syntagma and Plaka; our guide to Athens private tours by car suggests easy routes for the first days, and Athens to Delphi by car for when you are rested.
Who drives. Rides in Athens are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer; see the fleet.
