Heathrow to central London is about 26 km (16 mi) and roughly 35 minutes by car on a clear road, measured to Mayfair. That number moves a lot with the district you are heading for: Kensington is closer, the City and Canary Wharf are further east, and on a weekday morning the same drive can take an hour or more. The route is the M4 and then the A4 through Hammersmith and Kensington, the main road into London from the west.
With Elly8.net, a private car from Heathrow to Mayfair and the surrounding central zone costs from US$195 in a business sedan, US$255 in a Business SUV and US$510 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed and all-in per vehicle, with the chauffeur waiting in arrivals and tracking your flight. This guide breaks the drive down district by district, explains stops and detours, and says honestly when the Heathrow Express or the Elizabeth line is the better way in.
How long does it take to drive from Heathrow to central London?
About 35 minutes to Mayfair on a clear road, a distance of about 26 km (16 mi). Kensington is closer, at about 28 minutes, while the City takes about 45 minutes and Canary Wharf about an hour. On weekday mornings, traffic on the M4 and A4 regularly stretches the Mayfair drive to an hour or more.
The clear-road times below are routed estimates from the central terminal area for Terminals 2 and 3; Terminal 5 adds a few minutes, about 31 km (19 mi) and 38 minutes to Mayfair. They assume free-flowing roads, which in London are rarest on weekday mornings. Treat them as the floor, not the forecast.
The good news is that traffic changes the timing, not the price. An Elly8.net fare is fixed before you fly, so a slow M4 costs you minutes, not money.

What each part of town means for your arrival
Kensington, Knightsbridge and Belgravia. The first districts you reach on the A4, and the quickest drops after a long flight. The fixed Mayfair fare covers this zone, along with Marylebone and St James's.
Mayfair, St James's and Marylebone. The heart of the published London fares, a little over half an hour on a clear road. Hotels around Park Lane sit right on the route in, so the chauffeur turns off the A4 almost at your door.
Westminster, the South Bank and Covent Garden. Another few minutes beyond Mayfair. Covent Garden's streets are tight, so the chauffeur may set you down at the nearest legal point and carry the bags the last few metres.
King's Cross and St Pancras. If you are connecting to Eurostar, allow the drive plus the check-in time Eurostar sets for your ticket. Our train station transfers page explains how station pickups and drop-offs work, and we can meet you again in Paris or Brussels.
The City and Canary Wharf. The financial districts are on the far side of London from Heathrow, which is why the drive stretches to 45 minutes and an hour on a clear road. These addresses are quoted in the web booker. If you have a choice of flights, London City Airport is about 6 km (4 mi) and 14 minutes from Canary Wharf and about 11 km (7 mi) and 24 minutes from Bank by routed estimate, with fares to Mayfair from US$155.
When traffic doubles the drive
Two patterns account for most slow Heathrow runs. Weekday mornings, when commuter traffic heading into London fills the M4 and the A4 through Hammersmith, are the classic one, and overnight flights from North America often land straight into it. Friday afternoons and evenings are the other, in the opposite direction, when the run out to the airport for a departure needs the most margin.
There is no way to beat a full M4, but there are ways to stop it mattering. The chauffeur meets you after passport control and baggage reclaim rather than at a fixed clock time, so a slow border queue and a slow road do not add up to a missed pickup. If you have a morning meeting, book the car to go straight there with the bags in the boot, and check into the hotel later.
From the arrivals hall to the car
The drive starts a few minutes after you meet the chauffeur, not at the kerb outside the door. Heathrow states that no pick-ups or waiting are permitted in the terminal drop-off areas, so private cars collect passengers from the terminal car parks. Your chauffeur meets you inside arrivals with a name board, takes the trolley and walks you to the car; the short-stay parking for the pickup is billed at cost. Allow five to ten minutes for that walk when you are working out when you will reach the hotel.
Arriving late at night
Late arrivals are where the fixed fare matters most. After a delayed evening flight, the chauffeur has tracked the delay and is still in arrivals, because waiting is complimentary after a tracked landing. The roads into London are usually quieter late in the evening, so the drive is often closer to the clear-road times above, and you go straight to the hotel door rather than changing from a train to a taxi with your bags. If your hotel has a night entrance or a different door after midnight, put it in the booking notes.
Stops on the way in: multi-stop rides and detours
A private car does something a train cannot: it stops where you need it to.
Two drop-offs. Colleagues staying at different hotels, or a family dropping a grandparent in Kensington before going on to the City, can share one car. Enter both addresses in the web booker and it quotes a fixed price for the multi-stop ride before you pay.
Hotel, then meeting. For a day that starts at Heathrow and runs into meetings, book an hourly chauffeur from arrivals instead of a one-way transfer. From US$105 an hour in a business sedan with a 3-hour minimum, the chauffeur drops the bags at the hotel, waits while you change and takes you on to the first appointment.
A detour to Windsor. Windsor Castle is only about 14 minutes from Heathrow, the opposite way from London. An early landing can become a morning at the castle with the luggage locked in the car and London by mid-afternoon. Our London to Windsor guide explains the opening days and how the hourly booking works.
Fares from Heathrow and the other London airports
Fares are per vehicle, not per person, and include the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet inside arrivals. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. Every airport fare is the same fixed price in either direction.
| Vehicle | Seats / large bags | Heathrow to Mayfair | London City to Mayfair | Gatwick to Mayfair |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$195 | US$155 | US$340 |
| Business SUV / Van | 6 / 6 | US$255 | US$205 | US$445 |
| First Class SUV | 6 / 6 | US$315 | US$250 | US$545 |
| First Class Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$345 | US$275 | US$595 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 / 12 | US$510 | US$405 | US$885 |
A round trip from Heathrow to Mayfair and back costs from US$375 in a business sedan to US$970 in a Sprinter, 5% below two one-way fares. Every London price is on the London chauffeur service page, and the fleet page shows what each vehicle carries.
Choosing the vehicle for the drive in
Choose by bags first. A Business Sedan or First Class Sedan seats three with two large cases, which suits a couple or a solo traveller with a carry-on. Two cases each, a stroller or golf clubs mean the Business SUV or van, which seats six with six bags and costs US$60 more than the sedan. For a group of up to twelve, the Executive Sprinter takes twelve large bags, and at US$510 for the vehicle it costs less than three sedans at US$585. If you need to work or take calls on the way in, say so when you book and the chauffeur leaves you to it. Child seats are fitted before pickup on request.
Car or train: an honest verdict by district
Heathrow has excellent rail links, and for a solo traveller with one bag they are often better than any car.
- Staying near Paddington? The Heathrow Express takes 15 minutes, runs every 15 minutes and costs £26 for a standard single, or from £10 booked in advance; children 15 and under travel free. Hard to beat.
- Staying near Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street or Canary Wharf? Transport for London says the Elizabeth line runs from Heathrow through all of them, taking 28 minutes to Paddington, for a pay-as-you-go fare. For Canary Wharf in particular, it is direct and avoids the slowest part of the drive.
- A black cab from the rank. TfL's taxi fares estimate £70 to £120 between Heathrow and central London on the meter, plus a £1.60 extra for journeys starting at a Heathrow rank. It needs no booking, but the final price depends on the traffic.
The car wins for two or more travellers with luggage, families with children and child seats, anyone staying away from a station, late-night arrivals, multi-stop rides and anyone who wants the price fixed before the flight. Our chauffeur vs taxi and Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur pages cover the categories in detail.
Road charges in central London
Central London has a daily road charge. Transport for London sets the Congestion Charge at £18 a day when paid on the day or in advance, for driving in the zone from 7:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday and from 12:00 to 18:00 at weekends and on bank holidays. If your drop-off is inside the zone during those hours, the charge is billed at cost, never marked up, and appears separately from the fixed fare.
The other direction: central London to Heathrow
The fare to the airport is the same as the fare from it. Heathrow charges £7 every time a vehicle enters a terminal drop-off zone, which is billed at cost. Give the desk your terminal and flight time, and the chauffeur sets the pickup with a margin for the M4, especially on a Friday afternoon. For a first trip through the airport, our Heathrow transfer guide for first-time visitors covers the ETA, the eGates and the arrivals meeting.
How booking works

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take from Heathrow to central London by car?
About 35 minutes to Mayfair on a clear road, 26 km (16 mi). Kensington takes about 28 minutes, the City about 45 and Canary Wharf about an hour, by routed estimate. Weekday morning traffic can double those times; the fixed fare does not change.
How much is a private car from Heathrow to central London?
From US$195 in a business sedan, US$255 in a Business SUV, US$345 in a First Class Sedan and US$510 in an Executive Sprinter to Mayfair and the surrounding central zone. Prices are per vehicle and all-in; road charges and parking are billed at cost.
Can the car make two drop-offs in London?
Yes. Enter both addresses in the web booker and it quotes a fixed price for the multi-stop ride before you pay. It suits colleagues at different hotels, or a family dropping one person in Kensington and continuing to the City.
Is the train faster than a car from Heathrow?
To Paddington, yes: the Heathrow Express takes 15 minutes. The Elizabeth line is direct to Bond Street, Farringdon and Canary Wharf. For two or more people with luggage, or any address away from a station, a door-to-door car is simpler and often comparable in total cost.
Which route does the chauffeur take into London?
Usually the M4 and then the A4 through Hammersmith and Kensington, the main road into London from the west. On a bad morning the chauffeur may choose a different line into the centre; the price stays fixed whichever way the car goes.
What is the best airport for Canary Wharf?
London City Airport, if your flight options allow. It is about 14 minutes from Canary Wharf by routed estimate, against about an hour from Heathrow on a clear road, and fares to Mayfair start at US$155. From Heathrow, the Elizabeth line also runs direct to Canary Wharf.
