Hiring a private driver in London works much as it does at home, with a few local differences that are worth knowing before you land. Chauffeur cars are licensed as private hire vehicles by Transport for London and must be booked in advance rather than hailed. Traffic drives on the left, so you get in and out on the left-hand side. Road charges such as the Congestion Charge are part of daily driving. And with a fixed-price booking, the gratuity is already in the fare.

With Elly8.net, a London chauffeur by the hour costs from US$105 in a business sedan to US$210 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum, and fixed packages run from a 4-hour city tour at US$420 to a 10-hour corporate roadshow day at US$945, all priced per vehicle in US dollars. This guide covers the costs, the rules, the etiquette and the booking habits that make a London trip run smoothly.

How much does it cost to hire a private driver in London?

An Elly8.net chauffeur in London costs from US$105 an hour in a business sedan, US$135 in a Business SUV and US$210 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. An 8-hour day starts at US$775, and Heathrow to Mayfair transfers from US$195. Prices are fixed, all-in and per vehicle.

The packages are cheaper than the same time booked by the hour: the full day is priced 8% below eight hourly hours (US$775 against US$840 in a business sedan) and the roadshow day 10% below ten (US$945 against US$1,050). Hourly bookings go up to 12 hours at checkout. The full list, including Gatwick, London City, Stansted and Farnborough fares, is on the London chauffeur service page.

What is included, and what is billed at cost

Every fixed Elly8.net price includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and, on airport pickups, meet and greet in arrivals. A few costs depend on where you go, and those are passed on at cost, never marked up:

  • The Congestion Charge. Transport for London sets it at £18 a day when paid on the day or in advance, for driving in central London from 7:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and 12:00 to 18:00 at weekends and on bank holidays.
  • The Ultra Low Emission Zone. TfL's ULEZ runs 24 hours a day, every day except Christmas Day, across all London boroughs, with a £12.50 daily charge for vehicles that do not meet its standards. If it ever applies to a booking, it is billed at cost.
  • Airport charges. Heathrow charges £7 each time a vehicle enters a terminal drop-off zone, and car park charges apply when the chauffeur meets you inside.
  • Parking and waiting beyond the included time.

You see the fixed fare when you book, and any of these appear separately afterwards, so the price you agreed never changes.

How London licenses chauffeurs

London's rules are among the strictest anywhere, which is reassuring for a first-time visitor. Transport for London's guide to taxis and private hire explains that both taxi and private hire drivers must pass background checks through the Disclosure and Barring Service, as well as medical fitness checks. Private hire vehicles, a category that includes chauffeur and executive cars and limousines, must be pre-booked through a TfL-licensed operator, and the operator must give the passenger a booking confirmation before the journey, including the vehicle registration and the driver's first name. TfL also runs an online licence checker for drivers, vehicles and operators.

Rides in London are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer, seven for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley. Your confirmation arrives by email when you book, and the chauffeur's details follow before pickup.

Etiquette: what to expect from a London chauffeur

Meeting. At an airport, the chauffeur waits in arrivals with your name on a board. At a hotel, they wait at the entrance or in the driveway at the time on your booking, and message you when they are there. Our guide to the Heathrow transfer for first-time visitors walks through the airport meeting step by step.

Which side. Britain drives on the left, so the kerb is on your left. Passengers normally sit in the rear and get in and out on the kerb side, which in London means the left-hand rear door. The front passenger seat is on the left too, which surprises many Americans the first time.

Luggage and doors. The chauffeur loads and unloads the luggage. If anyone in your party needs a hand getting in or out, mention it when you book so the chauffeur is ready for it.

Conversation and calls. Chauffeurs take their lead from you. If you want to work or take calls, say so; if you would like suggestions for dinner, ask. For confidential business, NDAs are available on request.

Timing. Agree how you will message the chauffeur when you are ready, especially on tours, where the car may be waiting a few streets away because stopping is not allowed on many main roads. Our London private tours guide explains how pickups work around the red routes.

Changes on the day. Plans change, and on an hourly booking the chauffeur follows them: a longer lunch, an extra stop, a different route home. For anything that affects the end time or the vehicle, such as adding hours or passengers, message the 24/7 desk so the booking is updated and the price stays clear.

Dress. There is no dress code for passengers. For Royal Ascot or a black-tie dinner, the chauffeur drops you where the venue's arrival arrangements direct, and collects you from the agreed point afterwards.

Chauffeur, black cab or app: which to use when

London's licensed black cabs are excellent, and for short hops they are often the right choice. Transport for London's taxi fares page sets a minimum fare of £4.40, adds up to £2 when a taxi is booked by phone, app or online, and estimates £70 to £120 between Heathrow and central London on the meter. Drivers must normally accept hirings of up to 12 miles within Greater London, or 20 miles from Heathrow. For a one-mile ride from your hotel to a restaurant, hailing a cab is simple and cheap.

A pre-booked chauffeur is the better tool when the price needs to be known in advance, when the car needs to wait, when you are carrying luggage or travelling with children, and when you are three or more people with bags. App-based rides vary in price with demand and use designated pickup points at the airports, which is fine for light travellers but less so after a long flight. Our comparisons of chauffeur vs taxi and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft set out the trade-offs in more detail.

Choosing the class of car

Pick the vehicle by passengers and luggage first, comfort second. A Business Sedan seats three with two large bags and suits most couples and solo travellers. The Business SUV or van seats six with six bags and is the family choice. The First Class Sedan, an S-Class or similar, is the car for a client, an anniversary or an arrival that matters, and the First Class SUV gives six people the same standard. The Executive Sprinter carries twelve with twelve bags. Full details are on the fleet page.

A few words that help

British English trips up even fluent speakers. The trunk is the boot, the sidewalk the pavement, the curb the kerb and the highway the motorway. A roundabout is a traffic circle, a dual carriageway is a divided highway, and a lay-by is a pull-out at the side of the road. If the chauffeur says you will be dropped "outside the front", they mean the main entrance.

Tipping: already done

If you are used to adding a tip at the end of every ride at home, there is nothing to calculate here. Standard gratuity is included in every fixed Elly8.net fare, so nothing is expected at the end of the journey. Any extra is entirely your choice and never assumed.

Children and child seats

GOV.UK says children must normally use a child car seat until they are 12 years old or 135cm tall, whichever comes first. Licensed taxis and minicabs have an exemption when no seat is provided, but that is a legal minimum, not a recommendation. Request child or booster seats when you book, give the children's ages, and they are fitted before pickup. It saves carrying seats across the Atlantic.

Booking tips for the busiest weeks

London fills up in early summer, and cars go first. Book well ahead for these dates, published by the organisers for the next editions:

  • RHS Chelsea Flower Show, 18 to 22 May 2027 at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, according to the RHS.
  • Royal Ascot, 15 to 19 June 2027, according to Ascot Racecourse.
  • The Championships, Wimbledon, in late June and early July, when hourly bookings for SW19 are in demand.

Three more habits help at any time of year. Give flight and train numbers, not just times, so the chauffeur can track them. Book departures with the return, which as a round trip saves 5% on airport fares. And if you are travelling with a group, book one large vehicle rather than several small ones; an Executive Sprinter for twelve costs less than three sedans and keeps everyone together. Our sports event transportation page explains how race-day and match-day pickups are staged.

Corporate travel and assistants

Companies with people in London regularly can open a corporate account with monthly invoicing, fixed fares across all five London airports and NDAs on request. Executive assistants can book for any traveller and receive the confirmations. The corporate roadshow day gives a deal team ten hours with one chauffeur and a planned route, from US$945 in a business sedan to US$1,890 in a Sprinter; see investor roadshows. Travel agents and hotel concierges have their own travel agent accounts.

How booking works

  1. Enter pickup and drop-off. Add flight numbers for airport pickups, or choose an hourly block or package on the London prices page.
  2. Choose the vehicle. Business or First Class sedan, SUV or van, or Executive Sprinter, plus child seats and notes.
  3. Reserve now. Fixed fares go to secure checkout in US$; any other address goes through the web booker. Confirmation arrives by email.

Book any address

Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, refunded to the original card; see the cancellation policy. For days out of the city, our London day trip planner compares the routes.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private driver in London cost per hour?

From US$105 an hour in a business sedan, US$135 in a Business SUV, US$160 in a First Class SUV, US$170 in a First Class Sedan and US$210 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. Prices are per vehicle and include the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity.

Do you need to tip a chauffeur in London?

No. Standard gratuity is already included in every fixed Elly8.net fare, so nothing is expected at the end of the ride. If you want to add something for exceptional service, that is your choice, but it is never assumed or added to the bill.

Are London chauffeurs licensed?

Yes. Transport for London licenses private hire operators, drivers and vehicles; drivers pass background and medical checks, and private hire journeys must be pre-booked through a licensed operator, which sends a booking confirmation. Elly8.net bookings use licensed, commercially insured partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network.

Is the Congestion Charge included in the price?

It is billed at cost rather than built into the fare. TfL charges £18 a day for driving in central London from 7:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and 12:00 to 18:00 at weekends. You pay exactly what TfL charges, shown separately after the booking.

How far ahead should you book a chauffeur in London?

As soon as your flights are confirmed is the simple rule. For Royal Ascot, Wimbledon, the Chelsea Flower Show and other big weeks, book as soon as your dates are set. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, so booking early carries little risk.

Can you hire a chauffeur for several days?

Yes. Book each day as an hourly block or package, or combine airport transfers, tours and day trips in one reservation. For regular business travel, a corporate account adds monthly invoicing, and the same desk books our other cities across Europe and North America.
