Rome to Positano by private car is about 269 km (167 mi) from the historic centre, roughly 3 hours 25 minutes on a clear road, by our routed estimate on the public OSRM network. From Fiumicino Airport it is about 296 km (184 mi), roughly 3 hours 50 minutes. Almost all of it is motorway, the A1 Autostrada del Sole to the south of Naples, then the A3, before the Sorrento peninsula road and the last kilometres of the cliff road into Positano.
There is also a slower and more scenic way: across to the coast of southern Lazio through Sperlonga and Gaeta, then on to Naples and the peninsula, about 317 km (197 mi) and over five hours of driving before any stops. A one-way Rome to Positano car is quoted through the Elly8.net web booker as a fixed price per vehicle; once you are on the coast, published fares apply, such as Positano to Naples Airport from US$280 for the flight home.
How long is the drive from Rome to Positano?
About 3 hours 25 minutes on a clear road from Rome's historic centre, 269 km (167 mi), and about 3 hours 50 minutes from Fiumicino, routed on the public OSRM network. Allow more for traffic leaving Rome, around Naples and on the summer cliff road. The seaside route via Sperlonga and Gaeta is about 5 hours 15 minutes of driving.
Most travellers make one comfort stop on the fast route, which makes the realistic door-to-door time closer to four hours. With a sightseeing stop it becomes a day, which is often the best way to use it.

The fast route: motorway nearly all the way
| Leg | Road | Approximate distance |
|---|---|---|
| Rome to the motorway south | Via Casilina and the A1 spur | about 25 km |
| South through Lazio and Campania | A1 Autostrada del Sole | about 185 km |
| Around the Bay of Naples | A3 Napoli-Salerno | about 18 km |
| Along the Sorrento peninsula | SS145 Sorrentina | about 18 km |
| Into Positano | SS163 Amalfitana | about 9 km |
| Total, historic centre to Positano | 269 km / 167 mi, about 3 h 25 min clear road |
The road names come from the OSRM routing; the chauffeur may choose a different exit from Rome depending on traffic at your pickup time. The long middle section on the A1 is the easy part of the day. The pace changes twice: once on the approach to Naples, where the motorway is busy at peak hours, and again on the peninsula, where the road narrows and climbs before it reaches the coast.
The last stretch is the SS163, the coast road. Under the 2026 ANAS rules published by the Comune di Praiano, private cars on that road are restricted between 10.00 and 18.00 on restricted days by the last digit of the plate, while taxis and NCC licensed hire cars with driver are exempt. A rental car from Rome can arrive on the wrong day; a licensed chauffeur's car cannot.
The seaside route via Sperlonga and Gaeta
If you have a day and want to see the coast of southern Lazio, this route is a good alternative to the motorway. On the OSRM routing it leaves Rome on the A1, crosses the Lepini hills towards Terracina, joins the Via Appia briefly and follows the SR213 along the sea to Sperlonga, then Gaeta, before heading on towards Naples.
| Leg | Distance | Clear-road drive |
|---|---|---|
| Rome historic centre to Sperlonga | 146 km / 91 mi | about 2 h 15 min |
| Sperlonga to Gaeta | 17 km / 10 mi | about 23 min |
| Gaeta to Positano | 154 km / 95 mi | about 2 h 35 min |
| Total, without stops | 317 km / 197 mi | about 5 h 15 min |
Sperlonga. The seaside town is the first stop. Its own municipal site lists the Villa of Tiberius, the emperor's seaside residence, and the Torre Truglia watchtower among its landmarks. A walk through the village and a coffee with the sea view is a natural first stop.
Gaeta. A short drive further, Gaeta has its castle on the promontory, the Serapo beach and the Grotta del Turco, all featured on the Comune di Gaeta site. Lunch here works well, and from Gaeta to central Naples is about 105 km (65 mi), roughly 1 hour 40 minutes on a clear road.
This route adds close to two hours of driving to the motorway plan, before any time at the stops, so treat it as a full travel day and start early. It is best on a weekday outside high summer, when the seaside towns are quieter.
Stops on the fast route
If you take the motorway, the stops cluster around the Bay of Naples, where the motorway passes close to some of the most important sites in Italy.
Herculaneum. About 223 km (138 mi) from central Rome, roughly 2 hours 35 minutes, and then about 50 km (31 mi) and an hour on to Positano. The smaller Roman town is easier to see in two hours than Pompeii; check times on the Herculaneum Archaeological Park site.
Pompeii. About 235 km (146 mi) from central Rome, roughly 2 hours 40 minutes, then about 36 km (22 mi) and 46 minutes to Positano. Allow at least three hours and buy entry in advance from the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. The car waits with the luggage.
Lunch in Naples. Central Naples is about 221 km (137 mi) from central Rome, roughly 2 hours 30 minutes, and about 58 km (36 mi) and 65 minutes from Positano. A lunch stop in the city breaks the drive neatly in two. Central Naples has narrow streets and limited kerb space, so give the chauffeur the restaurant's exact address.
One sightseeing stop is plenty on the day of the transfer. Pompeii and Herculaneum on the same day make a long day in the car with your luggage, and both are easy as a day out from the coast later: the signature 8-hour Pompeii day trip from the Amalfi Coast costs from US$665 in a business sedan to US$1,325 in an Executive Sprinter.
What a private car from Rome to Positano costs
The Rome to Positano transfer is not on our published price list, because the price depends on where in Rome you are collected, the hotel in Positano, the route and any stop. Enter the pickup, the drop-off and the stop in the web booker and the desk returns a fixed price per vehicle, charged in US dollars, before you pay anything. Motorway tolls are billed at cost; standard gratuity is included. Book it as a city to city car service.
Two published price lists bracket the trip:
| Published Elly8.net fare | Business Sedan | Business SUV | First Class Sedan | Executive Sprinter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rome: Fiumicino to the historic centre | US$180 | US$235 | US$315 | US$470 |
| Amalfi Coast: NAP to Positano, either direction | US$280 | US$365 | US$490 | US$730 |
| Amalfi Coast: by the hour, 3-hour minimum | US$90 / hour | US$115 / hour | US$145 / hour | US$180 / hour |
| Amalfi Coast: full-day chauffeur | US$665 | US$850 | US$1,070 | US$1,325 |
Prices are per vehicle, never per person. As arithmetic for comparison only, a business SUV seats six with six bags, so two couples travelling together share one fixed vehicle price rather than buying four sets of train, commuter train and bus tickets.
For the train alternative, with its changes in Naples or Salerno, see our comparison of Rome to the Amalfi Coast by private car or train.
Choosing the vehicle for a long drive
Three and a half hours, or a whole day on the seaside route, is long enough that comfort matters. The fleet page lists capacities:
- Business sedan or First Class Sedan. Three passengers and two bags. Fine for a couple with modest luggage; a First Class Sedan for a quieter, more spacious ride.
- Business SUV or First Class SUV. Six passengers and six bags. The most practical choice for families or two couples with full-size cases for a long trip.
- Executive Sprinter. Twelve passengers and twelve bags, for wedding parties and groups heading to Ravello or Positano together. See Sprinter van with driver.
Child and booster seats are fitted on request before pickup; give the children's ages when you book. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer.
Timing the day
Start in the morning. A pickup between about 8 and 10 am gets you out of Rome after or before the worst commuter traffic and onto the coast in good light. The desk suggests a time once it knows the hotel and the stop.
Mind the arrival hour. On the coast road, mid-afternoon in summer is busy. Arriving earlier, or in the early evening, is often smoother.
From Fiumicino on arrival day. The chauffeur meets you inside arrivals with a name board after passport control and baggage claim, having tracked the flight; waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. Many travellers prefer to go straight to the coast with no sightseeing stop after an overnight flight.
The way back. If you fly home from Rome, book the return north at the same time, so both long legs are fixed. If you fly home from Naples, the coast to NAP is about 62 km (38 mi), roughly 70 minutes on a clear road, from US$280 in a business sedan.
Arriving in Positano
Positano is built up the cliff, and the arrival is unlike a city hotel. The coast road loops through the town above the beach, and many hotels have their entrance on that road or a short walk below it by steps. The chauffeur stops as close to the entrance as the road and the rules allow and helps with the bags to reception. Tell us the exact hotel when you book, and ask the hotel whether it sends a porter to meet cars; access varies a great deal from one property to the next, and the desk passes the details to the chauffeur.
If you are staying in a villa above the town or in Praiano, Montepertuso or Nocelle, give the full address and any instructions the owner has sent. Some private roads are steep and narrow, and the vehicle class matters: a business SUV is often a better choice than a Sprinter for a small group bound for a villa lane.
Groups and wedding parties from Rome
Destination weddings in Positano and Ravello often bring guests in through Rome. An Executive Sprinter carries twelve guests and twelve bags in one vehicle, and several can be timed to leave Rome together or to collect guests from Fiumicino across the day. For the couple, a First Class Sedan or First Class SUV can travel separately. See wedding transportation and group transportation; planners and travel agents can book on account through travel agent accounts.
