Vienna to Salzburg is about 297 km (184 mi) by road and roughly 3 hours 10 minutes on a clear road, by routed estimate from Vienna's Innere Stadt to Salzburg's old town. Almost all of it is on the A1 West Autobahn, past St. Pölten and Linz. With a private driver, the more rewarding version leaves the motorway at the start for the Wachau, the Danube valley between Krems and Melk, and adds about 45 minutes of driving for a day you will remember.
ÖBB runs trains from Vienna to Salzburg twice an hour without a change, so for one or two travellers with light bags the train is an excellent choice. A private driver makes sense for families and groups, for heavy luggage, for a hotel door that is hard to reach in Salzburg's old town, and above all for the stops. The one-way fixed price is shown on the Elly8.net web booker; in Vienna, chauffeurs by the hour cost from US$85.
How long is the drive from Vienna to Salzburg?
About 3 hours 10 minutes for 297 km (184 mi) on a clear road, by routed estimate, almost entirely on the A1 West Autobahn. Through the Wachau via Krems and Melk, the driving rises to about 3 hours 55 minutes. Weekday traffic leaving Vienna and summer weekends add time.

The route
The direct drive leaves Vienna to the west and joins the A1 West Autobahn, which runs almost all the way to Salzburg past St. Pölten and Linz. Austrian motorways are tolled with a vignette, which ASFINAG, the motorway operator, sells as a digital product linked to the licence plate; partner vehicles carry what they need, and on an Elly8.net booking tolls are billed at cost.
There is little to slow you on a clear day, but weekday rush hours leaving Vienna and holiday weekends can add time. The fixed fare does not change with the traffic.
The best stops between Vienna and Salzburg
Melk Abbey
If you make one stop, make it Melk. According to the abbey, Melk Abbey is one of the biggest and most beautiful Baroque ensembles in Europe, Benedictine monks have lived and worked there without interruption since 1089, and it stands within the Wachau UNESCO World Heritage site. The ticketed visit takes in the abbey church, the abbey library, the museum in the former imperial rooms and the abbey park.
Melk is about 1 hour 4 minutes from Vienna, so a 9:00 departure has you at the abbey by mid-morning, and the remaining run to Salzburg is about 2 hours 15 minutes. Allow two hours at the abbey and a lunch, and you reach Salzburg in the late afternoon.
The Wachau valley
UNESCO describes the Wachau Cultural Landscape as the stretch of the Danube valley between Melk and Krems, with monasteries, castles, ruins, small towns and villages, and vineyards that trace its history back to prehistoric times. Driving it means leaving the motorway at Krems, about 1 hour 2 minutes from Vienna, following the valley to Melk, about 38 minutes, and rejoining the A1 there.
It is the stop that suits a private driver best. The road is the attraction, the villages invite short stops, and a winery visit is easy when nobody in your party has to drive. The chauffeur follows local rules on everything inside the vehicle. Vienna's signature eight-hour day trip goes to the Wachau and back; on a Salzburg transfer, the valley simply becomes the first half of the journey. See wine tours.
Linz
Linz, on the Danube, sits about 2 hours 7 minutes from Vienna, almost exactly the halfway point by time, with about 1 hour 31 minutes left to Salzburg. It is the natural lunch stop on the direct motorway route if you have skipped the Wachau.
Mondsee and the lakes
Close to Salzburg, the A1 passes the lake town of Mondsee. It is about 2 hours 53 minutes from Vienna and only about 27 minutes short of Salzburg, which makes it an easy last stop. For travellers who want the region's most famous lake village, Hallstatt is a bigger detour; our guide to Vienna to Hallstatt by car or train shows how to fit it in, and from Hallstatt it is about 1 hour 14 minutes on to Salzburg.
Car or train from Vienna to Salzburg?
The train deserves a fair hearing, because it is very good. According to ÖBB, its trains run from Vienna to Salzburg twice an hour without any change, with the RJX the fastest on the route, and Sparschiene tickets can be booked up to six months ahead in either class, getting cheaper the earlier you buy. Coming straight from the airport, Vienna Airport's rail table gives 2 hours 49 minutes from the airport station to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof by Railjet, every 30 minutes.
| Private driver | ÖBB train | |
|---|---|---|
| Departure | Your hotel, your time | Twice an hour from Vienna, no change |
| Time | About 3 h 10 min direct, about 3 h 55 min through the Wachau | Fast RJX services; from the airport about 2 h 49 min |
| Stops | Melk, the Wachau, Linz, Mondsee, any address | None |
| Luggage | Business Sedan 2 large bags; Business SUV 6; Executive Sprinter 12 | What you can carry to the platform |
| Price basis | Fixed per vehicle, shown on the booker | Per person; Sparschiene fares cheaper when booked early |
| Best for | Families, groups, stops, heavy bags, old-town hotels | One or two travellers, light bags |
The honest verdict: if you are one or two people with a suitcase each and no interest in stopping, take the train; it is fast, frequent and cheaper per person. The car wins when you have three or more people and real luggage, when you want Melk or the Wachau on the way, when children need seats, or when your Salzburg hotel is inside the old town.
Arriving in Salzburg by car
Salzburg's centre is the Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg, which UNESCO describes as an extraordinarily rich urban fabric from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, when the city was ruled by a prince-archbishop, and the birthplace of Mozart. Its streets were not built for cars, and the city manages them closely.
According to Salzburg's tourist board, car access to the old town is limited, partly because of the construction-related closure of the Siegmundstor, also known as the Neutor. Hotel guests and residents can still reach the centre by car, using the hotel guidance system and the automated bollards that control access, and car parks in the centre remain open, though some access routes have changed. All parking in the city centre is paid.
This is where a driver helps most. Give the desk your hotel's exact address when you book, and the chauffeur follows the hotel access route rather than circling the bollards. Once you are settled, the tourist board notes that overnight guests in the state of Salzburg receive the Guest Mobility Ticket, valid for the whole stay, with unlimited use of public transport across the region, so you will not need a car in town.
What a private driver from Vienna to Salzburg costs
Salzburg is a city-to-city route, so the one-way fixed price for your vehicle, with or without stops at Melk or in the Wachau, is shown on the web booker before you pay. The web booker handles multi-stop transfers. For reference, these are the published Vienna rates.
| Vehicle | Passengers / large bags | By the hour, 3-hour minimum | Full-day chauffeur, 8 hours | Wachau day trip, 8 hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$85 | US$630 | US$630 |
| Business SUV / Van | 6 / 6 | US$110 | US$810 | US$810 |
| First Class Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$140 | US$1,035 | US$1,035 |
| First Class SUV | 6 / 6 | US$130 | US$960 | US$960 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 / 12 | US$170 | US$1,255 | US$1,255 |
Prices are per vehicle and include the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost; abbey and museum tickets are separate. Because the fare is for the vehicle, a family of five in a Business SUV or a group of ten in an Executive Sprinter pays one price, which is often the deciding factor against five or ten train tickets plus taxis at both ends. See group transportation and city to city car service.
Two ways to make the trip easier still: split it, or upgrade it. Some guests spend a night in the Wachau and book two one-way transfers, Vienna to Krems or Melk on the first day and on to Salzburg on the second, so the valley is not rushed. Others choose a First Class Sedan, a Mercedes-Benz S-Class or similar, or a First Class SUV, an Escalade, Navigator or similar, for a three-hour run that feels shorter. Both options are priced on the web booker before you pay.
Planning the day
- Choose the route. Direct, about 3 hours 10 minutes; via Melk, about 3 hours 20 minutes of driving; or through the Wachau, about 3 hours 55 minutes.
- Set the stops. Melk works best in the morning; a winery lunch in the Wachau fits around midday; Mondsee makes an easy final break.
- Count the bags. A Business Sedan takes two large bags, a Business SUV six and an Executive Sprinter twelve.
- Give the hotel address. Especially in Salzburg's old town, so the chauffeur plans the access route.
- Book the next leg. Salzburg to Munich, or back to Vienna Airport for a flight, can be booked at the same time on the web booker.
Salzburg back to Vienna Airport for the flight home
Many trips run the other way at the end: a few days in Salzburg, then a flight home from Vienna International Airport. The airport lies east of the city, so it is further from Salzburg than central Vienna is: about 322 km (200 mi) and roughly 3 hours 30 minutes on a clear road, by routed estimate. By rail, the airport's table gives about 2 hours 49 minutes between Salzburg Hauptbahnhof and the airport station by Railjet, every 30 minutes, which is the faster choice for light travellers.
If you go by car, plan the pickup backwards from the flight: the airline's check-in and bag-drop deadline, security, the drive and a generous margin for traffic around Vienna. A private driver collects you at your Salzburg hotel and sets you down at your terminal, with the bags handled at both ends. Tell the desk your airline and flight number when you book. See airport transfers.
Families and groups on the Salzburg run
Three hours in a car is easy with the right vehicle. Ask for child or booster seats when you book and give the children's ages, and the partner fits them before pickup. A Business SUV or Van leaves room for a stroller as well as six large bags, and the planned stops at Melk or Mondsee break the drive into manageable pieces. For a group of eight to twelve, an Executive Sprinter keeps everyone and everything in one vehicle, so nobody is split between trains or carriages.
Beyond Salzburg
Salzburg sits between Vienna and Munich, and many itineraries carry on into Germany. The same desk runs the Munich car service, and in the other direction Prague and Budapest. If your trip began in the Czech capital, see Prague to Vienna by private driver or train.
How booking works
Rides from Vienna are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Enter your Vienna hotel and your Salzburg address, add the stops, choose the vehicle and child seats, and the web booker shows the fixed price; pay by card in US$ and confirmation arrives by email.
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Every Vienna fare is on the Vienna chauffeur service page.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to drive from Vienna to Salzburg?
About 3 hours 10 minutes for 297 km (184 mi) on a clear road, by routed estimate, almost all on the A1 West Autobahn. Weekday traffic leaving Vienna and summer holiday weekends can add time. Through the Wachau via Krems and Melk, allow about 3 hours 55 minutes of driving.
Is it better to take the train from Vienna to Salzburg?
For one or two travellers with light bags, often yes: ÖBB runs trains twice an hour without a change, and early Sparschiene tickets are good value. A private driver is better for families and groups, heavy luggage, old-town hotels and stops at Melk or in the Wachau.
What is the best stop between Vienna and Salzburg?
Melk Abbey, about 1 hour 4 minutes from Vienna, is the classic: a vast Baroque abbey where Benedictine monks have lived since 1089, inside the Wachau UNESCO site. For a longer, more scenic day, drive the Wachau valley from Krems to Melk first.

The one-way fixed price for your vehicle, with or without stops, is shown on the Elly8.net web booker before you pay. For reference, Vienna chauffeurs cost from US$85 an hour, and a full eight-hour day from US$630 in a Business Sedan to US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter.
Can a car drive into Salzburg's old town?

Is a vignette needed for the drive?
Austrian motorways require a vignette, sold by ASFINAG as a digital product linked to the licence plate. Partner vehicles carry what they need, and on an Elly8.net booking, motorway tolls are billed at cost. If you rented a car, buying the vignette would be your job.
