Vienna to Hallstatt is about 288 km (179 mi) by road and roughly 3 hours 30 minutes on a clear road, by routed estimate from the Innere Stadt. The route follows the A1 West Autobahn most of the way, then leaves it for the Salzkammergut road through Gmunden and Bad Ischl to the shore of Lake Hallstatt. By rail, you take an ÖBB train to Attnang-Puchheim, change to the Salzkammergut line, and finish with a ferry across the lake, because Hallstatt's station is on the opposite shore.
Which is better? Hallstatt's own tourist office recommends the train for travellers from Vienna or Salzburg, because parking in the village is scarce and the centre is closed to traffic, and for light travellers that is sound advice. A private driver is the better choice for families with suitcases, for a stay at a hotel in the village, for a same-day transfer that continues to Salzburg, and for anyone who does not want three changes after a transatlantic flight. One-way fixed prices are shown on the Elly8.net web booker; in Vienna, chauffeurs by the hour cost from US$85.

The train and ferry route, step by step
Hallstatt's tourist office sets out the rail journey from Vienna:
- Vienna to Attnang-Puchheim. Take an ÖBB train, for example a Railjet, from Wien Hauptbahnhof to Attnang-Puchheim, the junction on the Western line between Vienna and Salzburg. According to ÖBB, an hourly Intercity on the route stops at the major interchange stations with connections to holiday regions such as the Salzkammergut via Attnang-Puchheim.
- Attnang-Puchheim to Hallstatt station. Change to the Salzkammergutbahn, the REX towards Hallstatt. The tourist office calls this single-track line one of the most beautiful railways in Austria.
- The ferry. Hallstatt station is on the opposite side of the lake, so you cross by the Hallstätter Seeschifffahrt ferry to the landing stage in the village. The ferry runs regularly and the crossing takes about 15 minutes.
It is a lovely journey, and for one or two people with backpacks or small cases it is the right one. With a family's luggage, the same trip means lifting bags on and off two trains and a boat, and the last connection of the day matters if your flight landed late.
Driving to Hallstatt: what day visitors need to know
Hallstatt manages its traffic tightly, and anyone arriving by car should know the rules before setting out. According to the tourist office's parking page:
- The village centre is closed to traffic by barriers. Cars park outside it, and the walk from the car parks to the sights takes 5 to 20 minutes.
- Day visitors cannot book parking in advance. The large car parks, the P1 garage, open all year, and P2, open in summer, cannot be reserved, so the tourist office advises arriving early or switching to bus and train.
- Electronic signs show free spaces on the road into the village.
- Overnight guests use P1, with a shuttle bus from the car park to accommodation in the centre; questions go to your host.
The tourist office also reminds drivers that Austrian motorways require a vignette, and that a warning triangle and safety vests for everyone on board are compulsory. Its advice for Hallstatt in particular is to allow plenty of time and arrive by train or very early in the day to avoid queues and full car parks.
A private driver does not change those rules; the chauffeur uses the same roads and car parks as everyone else. What changes is your part of it. You are dropped at the edge of the centre while the chauffeur deals with the parking, and when you stay overnight the desk works out the luggage plan with your hotel in advance. On an Elly8.net booking, parking is billed at cost.
Why American travellers often choose the car
Three things tip the balance for visitors from the United States and Canada.
Jet lag and connections. Many travellers fly into Vienna and want to reach the lake the same day. Vienna Airport to Hallstatt is about 3 hours 45 minutes by routed estimate, door to door. The rail route from the airport adds a train into the city or onwards, a change at Attnang-Puchheim and the ferry.
Luggage for a longer trip. Two weeks in Europe means big suitcases. A Business SUV or Van takes six passengers and six large bags, and an Executive Sprinter twelve and twelve, loaded at the curb by the chauffeur.
Driving yourself is harder than it looks. A rental car means buying the vignette, carrying the compulsory safety kit, finding a space in car parks that cannot be booked, and driving home tired. See chauffeur vs car rental.
One price in US dollars. The fare is fixed per vehicle before you travel and charged to your card in US dollars, with the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity included. There is no meter running in a summer queue on the lake road, and the desk that took the booking is reachable around the clock if plans change.
Three ways to do Hallstatt with a private driver
1. One way, with a night by the lake
The best way to see Hallstatt is to stay, so you are there in the early morning and the evening when the day visitors have gone. Book a one-way transfer from your Vienna hotel or from VIE with your flight number; the web booker shows the fixed price for your vehicle. Your chauffeur can stop for lunch in Gmunden on Lake Traunsee, about 2 hours 34 minutes out of Vienna, and have you at the lake by mid-afternoon.
2. Vienna to Salzburg by way of Hallstatt
This is the route many itineraries need: leave Vienna in the morning, spend three or four hours in Hallstatt, and finish the day in Salzburg. The driving is about 3 hours 30 minutes to Hallstatt and about 1 hour 15 minutes on to Salzburg, under five hours in total. The web booker prices it as a multi-stop transfer, with the stop set in advance. If you prefer a gentler route without Hallstatt, our guide to Vienna to Salzburg by car covers Melk and the Wachau instead.
3. A day trip from Vienna and back
It can be done, but it is a long day: about seven hours of driving for the round trip, before any time in the village. Booked by the hour, a twelve-hour day costs US$1,020 in a Business Sedan, US$1,320 in a Business SUV and US$2,040 in an Executive Sprinter, as arithmetic at the published hourly rates of US$85, US$110 and US$170. We would usually suggest option 1 or 2 instead, or the Wachau Valley, Vienna's eight-hour signature day trip, from US$630 in a Business Sedan.
Staying near Hallstatt instead of in it
Hallstatt is a small village, and the neighbouring villages around the lake, covered by the same tourist office, make good bases too. Obertraun, on the fjord-like Lake Hallstatt beneath the Dachstein massif, has its own station, Obertraun Dachsteinhöhlen, on the Salzkammergut line, and drivers reach it on the B145 and the L547. Bad Goisern, the largest village in the UNESCO World Heritage region, is easy by car, train or bus. Gosau is reached by train to Steeg-Gosau and then bus. For a private driver, any of them is an address like any other: the car goes to the door, and Hallstatt is a short hop away for the day.
What to see once you are there
Hallstatt lies inside the Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape, which UNESCO describes as a landscape where salt was mined as early as the second millennium BC, a prosperity reflected in the village's fine architecture. Above the village, Salzwelten Hallstatt runs a funicular to the High Valley, a Skywalk viewing platform over the lake, and tours of what it calls the world's oldest salt mine, through 7,000 years of mining history, with a mine train, miners' slides and an underground salt lake. Book timed tickets before the day, and give the time to the desk so the pickup is planned around it.
Fitting Hallstatt into a longer trip
Hallstatt rarely stands alone in an itinerary. These are the combinations the desk books most often for North American visitors, each priced on the web booker as a fixed transfer.
- Vienna, Hallstatt, Salzburg, Munich. Salzburg is the natural next stop after the lake, and Munich follows across the German border; the same desk runs the Munich car service for the airport and the city.
- Prague, Vienna, Hallstatt. Travellers coming from the Czech capital often start with the Prague to Vienna leg, then head west a day or two later; see the Prague chauffeur service for the start of the trip.
- Vienna first, then the lake. A few days in Vienna with a car by the hour for palace visits and dinners, then the transfer to Hallstatt; see hourly chauffeur.
Whatever the order, give the desk the whole plan when you book. The chauffeur for each leg then knows the luggage, the hotels and the timing, and the 24/7 desk can move a pickup if a train, a ferry or a flight changes.
Car or train: who should choose what
| Traveller | Our honest pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo or a couple, backpacks, flexible | Train and ferry | Scenic, simple, recommended by the tourist office |
| Family with suitcases and child seats | Private car, Business SUV | One vehicle, no changes, bags handled |
| Group of eight to twelve | Private car, Executive Sprinter | Everyone and everything together |
| Landing at VIE and heading straight to the lake | Private car from arrivals | About 3 h 45 min, met with a name board |
| Vienna to Salzburg with a Hallstatt stop | Private car, multi-stop | Under five hours of driving in total |
| A day trip and back to Vienna | Think twice, or take the train | About seven hours of driving |
