Brussels to Bruges is an easy trip by rail. Visit Bruges, the city's official tourism office, says three trains an hour leave Brussels-South for Bruges every day and the journey takes about an hour. By road, the drive from the Grand-Place to the Markt in Bruges is about 97 km (60 mi) and roughly 1 hour 17 minutes on a clear road, by our routed estimate. For a day trip with a small bag, the train is quicker door to door from a central hotel, and we would book it.
The calculation changes when Bruges is not a day out but a move. A family checking out of a Brussels hotel with four large suitcases, a group of eight heading to a canal-side hotel, cruise passengers bound for Zeebrugge or a traveller landing at Brussels Airport and going straight to Bruges all face the same problem: the train goes station to station, and Bruges hotels sit inside a historic centre where cars are restricted. Elly8.net quotes the one-way transfer at a fixed price per vehicle in the web booker; the eight-hour Bruges day package costs from US$630 in a business sedan.
How long does it take to get from Brussels to Bruges?
By train, about an hour from Brussels-South to Bruges, with three trains an hour every day, according to Visit Bruges. By car, about 1 hour 17 minutes on a clear road from the Grand-Place to the Markt, a routed 97 km (60 mi). From Brussels Airport, direct trains take about 1 hour 25 minutes; the drive is about 75 minutes.
The train figures come from Visit Bruges, which adds that the trains from Brussels-South terminate in Ostend, Knokke or Blankenberge, and that from the major hubs, Brussels included, one to four direct trains an hour run to Bruges station. Our road figures are routed estimates from the public OSRM router for a clear road; the motorways around Brussels and Ghent are slow at rush hour, so a weekday departure mid-morning is the sweet spot.

The train: what the journey really involves
Rail is the default for good reasons. Trains are frequent, the journey is short, and there is no traffic to worry about. A few practical points matter for first-time visitors.
Get off at the right station. Visit Bruges points out that Bruges has two stations. Brugge Sint-Pieters is in the north-east of the city; to visit the city, take a train that stops at "Brugge" station, which is within walking distance of the historic centre.
The last stretch. From Brugge station, the walk into the old town is pleasant with a daypack and harder with wheeled cases on cobbles. Visit Bruges mentions De Lijn buses and taxis, including bike taxis, for the rest of the journey.
From the airport. Brussels Airport lists direct trains to Bruges taking about 1 hour 25 minutes, from the station directly beneath the terminal. Train journeys to and from the airport usually include the €6.90 Brussels Airport Supplement in the ticket price, collected by the railway.
International connections. Visit Bruges lists Eurostar and TGV services into Brussels-South from London, Paris and Lille, where you can change to a train that stops at Bruges, so a London to Bruges day is one change.
What a private car does differently
Door to door with luggage. The car collects you at the hotel in Brussels or in arrivals at BRU and sets you down as close to your Bruges hotel as the streets allow. The chauffeur handles the bags.
No station changes. From Brussels Airport, the train to Bruges is direct, but from a hotel outside central Brussels, or with a stop on the way, a train trip becomes a chain of connections.
Stops on the way. Ghent is about halfway, 56 km (35 mi) from the Grand-Place and 51 km (32 mi) from Bruges. A transfer can pause there for lunch and the Van Eyck brothers' Mystic Lamb, then continue. The historic port town of Damme is about 7 km (5 mi) from Bruges. A car can add either; a train cannot easily take your luggage with you.
A vehicle sized for the group. You choose by passengers and bags, not by what is on the rank.
| Vehicle class | Passengers | Bags | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 | 2 | A couple with two cases |
| First Class Sedan | 3 | 2 | The same in an S-Class |
| Business SUV / Van | 6 | 6 | Families with checked luggage |
| First Class SUV | 6 | 6 | Families wanting more comfort |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 | 12 | Groups, wedding parties, tour groups |
Arriving in Bruges by car: the restricted centre
Bruges protects its historic centre. Visit Bruges warns that certain streets in the historic centre are car-free or have vehicle restrictions at specific times, and its parking page explains that all parking in the centre is paid, steering day visitors to peripheral car parks and Park and Ride, with a large coach park run by Interparking on the edge of town.
For a transfer, that means planning the final approach. Give us the exact hotel address and arrival time, and the partner plans the closest legal set-down. Where the last few metres are pedestrian, the chauffeur helps with the bags. Hotels can usually advise on access for arriving guests, and it is worth asking them when you book.
Cruise passengers: Zeebrugge, Bruges and Brussels
Cruise ships call at Zeebrugge, the port on the coast north of Bruges; Visit Bruges has a welcome page for passengers arriving at the cruise terminal. Zeebrugge is about 22 km (14 mi) from Bruges station and about 115 km (72 mi) from the Grand-Place, roughly an hour and a half on a clear road.
Three trips come up again and again:
- Brussels Airport or a Brussels hotel to the ship at the start of a cruise, with luggage. A Business SUV or Sprinter carries the group and the cases in one vehicle.
- The ship to Bruges and back on a port day, with the chauffeur waiting while you walk the old town. Book an hourly chauffeur, from US$85 an hour in a business sedan to US$170 in a Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum.
- The ship to the airport at the end, timed to disembarkation.
Give us the ship name and the expected disembarkation time, and see cruise port transfers.
Coaches, Charleroi and other ways in
Not everyone starts in central Brussels. Visit Bruges lists Flibco coaches between Bruges and Brussels South Charleroi Airport, with 12 services a day timed as far as possible to flights, and FlixBus services that stop at Brussels-South and Brussels Airport among other European stations and airports. Long-distance coaches use a terminal at the rear of Brugge station, at the roundabout in Spoorwegstraat.
Coaches are the cheapest way to cover the distance and suit backpackers and solo travellers. For travellers flying into Charleroi on a short European connection after a transatlantic flight, a car avoids a second long wait. Charleroi is about 57 km (35 mi) south of the Grand-Place, so Charleroi to Bruges is a longer drive than Brussels to Bruges; the web booker quotes it at a fixed price before you pay.
Weddings, groups and tours in Bruges
Bruges is a favourite for destination weddings and group trips, and moving a wedding party from Brussels hotels, or guests from the airport, is a classic Sprinter job: one Executive Sprinter for up to 12 guests and 12 bags, with a First Class Sedan for the couple. See wedding transportation and group transportation. Tour leaders and travel agents can book on account through travel agent accounts.
Private car vs train: a fair verdict
| Situation | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Couple, day trip, small bags, central Brussels hotel | Train | About an hour, three trains an hour, no traffic |
| Solo traveller from Brussels Airport to Bruges, carry-on | Train | Direct from beneath the terminal, about 1 h 25 min |
| Family of five moving hotels with checked luggage | Private car | One vehicle, door to door, no cobbles with cases |
| Group of eight or more | Private car | One Executive Sprinter, one bill |
| Arriving at BRU after an overnight flight with children | Private car | Met in arrivals, child seats fitted, straight to the hotel |
| Cruise embarkation at Zeebrugge | Private car | Luggage and timing to the ship |
| Lunch in Ghent on the way | Private car | Stop and continue with your bags in the boot |
Train prices are per person; Elly8.net prices are per vehicle. For a family of five or a group of ten, a single vehicle can compare well with a stack of rail tickets, especially once you add a taxi at each end.
What the car costs
One-way transfer. Brussels or Brussels Airport to a Bruges address is a fixed price per vehicle, quoted in the web booker before you pay. For scale, the published BRU to Grand-Place transfer costs from US$115 in a business sedan, US$150 in a business SUV and US$185 in a First Class SUV to US$300 in an Executive Sprinter. Prices include the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet; tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost.
A day in Bruges and back. If you are staying in Brussels and want Bruges as a day out, the eight-hour package costs from US$630 in a business sedan, US$810 in a business SUV, US$960 in a First Class SUV and US$1,035 in a First Class Sedan, to US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter. Our Brussels day trip guide compares it with Ghent, Antwerp, Waterloo and other days out.
Onward. From Bruges, many travellers continue to Amsterdam or Paris. See city to city car service and our Amsterdam car service and Paris chauffeur service.
Planning tips for North American travellers
- Choose "Brugge" station, not Sint-Pieters, if you take the train.
- Pack for cobbles. Bruges is a walking city; heavy cases are the main reason visitors switch to a car.
- Ask your hotel about access for arriving guests inside the historic centre, and send us the answer.
- Book the return with the outbound if you are coming back to Brussels or flying out of BRU, so the departure is settled.
- Flights. Give us the flight number for airport pickups. The chauffeur tracks the landing and waits in arrivals with a name board; waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. See airport transfers.
- Getting around Brussels itself before you leave? Our Brussels Uber vs taxi guide covers the city's rules.
How booking works
