By private car, Milan to Lake Como takes about 48 minutes to Como town and about 78 minutes to Bellagio on a clear road, by our routed estimates from central Milan. The drive is short to the southern tip of the lake and slow at the end for the towns in the middle, where the roads follow the shore through one village after another.
What it costs depends on the plan. A one-way drive from a Milan hotel to the lake is quoted at a fixed price in the Elly8.net web booker before you pay; for reference, our published fare from Milan Linate, on the city's eastern edge, to Bellagio and the lake towns is US$315 in a business sedan. If you want to see the lake and come back the same evening, the 8-hour Lake Como day trip from Milan starts at US$665.
How long does it take to drive from Milan to Lake Como?
From central Milan, Como town is about 50 km (31 mi), roughly 48 minutes on a clear road, and Bellagio about 72 km (45 mi), roughly 78 minutes, by our routed estimates. Tremezzo and Varenna take about 84 minutes each. Weekend and summer traffic on the shore roads can add a great deal to these times.
Those are routed estimates from the public OSRM routing engine, from the fashion district in the city centre. They assume a clear road, which on a Friday afternoon leaving Milan or a Sunday in July you will not have. The drive to Como town is mostly motorway; the drives to the central lake towns are not.
See Lake Como prices and reserve
Drive times from central Milan to each lake town
| From central Milan to | Road distance (routed estimate) | Clear-road drive | Shore |
|---|---|---|---|
| Como town | 50 km / 31 mi | about 48 min | Southern tip |
| Cernobbio | 54 km / 34 mi | about 49 min | Western shore, just north of Como |
| Bellagio | 72 km / 45 mi | about 78 min | The point where the three arms meet |
| Tremezzo | 79 km / 49 mi | about 84 min | Western shore, opposite Bellagio |
| Varenna | 77 km / 48 mi | about 84 min | Eastern shore |
From Milano Centrale station rather than the fashion district, Bellagio is about 69 km (43 mi), roughly 72 minutes, by the same method. If you arrive in Milan by high-speed train and go straight to the lake, give us the train number and the chauffeur meets you at the station; see train station transfers.
Two ways out of Milan: via Como, or via Lecco
Lake Como is shaped like an upside-down Y. Como town sits at the bottom of the left arm, Lecco at the bottom of the right arm, and Bellagio on the point between them. That geography gives a driver two approaches.
Via Como. The motorway north from Milan towards Como and the Swiss border reaches Como town in under an hour on a clear road. From Como, one road runs up the western shore through Cernobbio, Moltrasio and Argegno to Tremezzo and Menaggio; another climbs along the western side of the Bellagio peninsula to Bellagio. This is the natural route for Cernobbio, the western-shore villas and, on most days, Bellagio.
Via Lecco. The fast road north-east from Milan towards Lecco serves the eastern shore, Varenna and the towns beyond. From Lecco, the road along the eastern arm continues north towards Varenna and Bellano.
A local chauffeur picks the approach on the day. The lake roads are narrow in places, with tunnels, tight bends and bus traffic, and the faster way to Bellagio on a summer Saturday is not always the shorter one. That judgement is part of what you are paying for.
Leaving Milan: hotel pickups and the first half hour
The first part of the trip is the city itself. Many central Milan hotels sit on narrow streets or in areas with restricted traffic, and pickup points are not always at the front door. Give us the hotel name when you book and the chauffeur plans the pickup point and time. Traffic leaving Milan is heaviest on weekday mornings and on Friday afternoons, so a 9:30 or 10:00 start is often better than an early one.
Luggage matters on this transfer too. If you are moving from a Milan hotel to a lake hotel for the rest of the trip, count the cases before you choose the car: a Business Sedan or First Class Sedan takes three passengers and two large bags, a Business SUV or First Class SUV six passengers and six bags, and an Executive Sprinter twelve and twelve. See the fleet.
Stops worth making on the way
A private car turns the transfer into part of the trip. These are the stops we see booked most:
- Como town. The cathedral, the lakefront and the funicular up to Brunate for the view over the lake. An hour is enough for a first look.
- Cernobbio. A lakeside town just north of Como with a promenade and a pier, and a good place for coffee before the shore road.
- Villa del Balbianello. The villa on its own peninsula at Tremezzina, run by Italy's national trust; check the FAI's visitor information for opening arrangements and how to reach it.
- Villa Carlotta. The garden villa at Tremezzina, close to Tremezzo, which pairs naturally with Balbianello; see Villa Carlotta for opening days.
- Bellagio. If you are staying elsewhere, an afternoon here is worth the detour.
A short stop on a one-way transfer can be added when you book in the web booker, and the fixed price reflects it. For anything longer than a quick stop, book the car by the hour: on Lake Como that is US$90 an hour in a business sedan, US$115 in a business SUV, US$145 in a First Class Sedan and US$180 in a Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. See hourly chauffeur.
What the drive costs
There are four ways to book Milan to the lake, and each is fixed and all-in before you travel:
| Plan | How it is priced | From |
|---|---|---|
| One-way, Milan hotel to a lake hotel | Fixed quote in the web booker | Quoted before you pay |
| One-way, Linate Airport to Bellagio and the lake towns | Published fare | US$315 business sedan to US$820 Sprinter |
| Lake Como day trip from Milan, 8 hours | Published package on the Milan page | US$665 business sedan to US$1,325 Sprinter |
| By the hour, as directed | Hourly, 3-hour minimum | US$90 an hour business sedan |
All prices are per vehicle and include the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet. Tolls and parking are billed at cost. If you are coming straight from Malpensa rather than from the city, the published fare is US$320 to Bellagio and the lake towns; our Malpensa to Lake Como comparison covers that route in detail.
For a same-day return, the 8-hour day trip is the better buy than two one-way transfers; see the Lake Como day trip with a private driver for routes and timing. For a one-way transfer that continues beyond the lake, to St. Moritz or Zurich for example, book it as a city to city car service.
The train from Milan, fairly compared
The train from Milan to the lake is quick, frequent and inexpensive, and for many travellers it is the right choice. Trenord's published figures:
- Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni: about 40 minutes without changes, around 17 trains a day from 06:43 to 21:43, second-class tickets from €5.40 (Trenord).
- Milano Cadorna to Como Lago: about 60 minutes, roughly hourly from 05:43 to 22:43, arriving by the lakefront (Trenord).
- Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino: about 64 minutes without changes, about 16 trains a day from 06:20 to 21:20 (Trenord); from Varenna, boats cross to Bellagio, Menaggio and Cadenabbia.
If you are one or two people with light bags and you are staying in Como town or a short walk from Varenna station, take the train. It is faster than most people expect and costs a few euros.
The car earns its place when the hotel is not near a station, when the plan includes villas on the western shore, when you are moving four people and several suitcases between hotels, when you have children who need fitted seats, or when you simply want to be collected at one door and set down at another.
A Milan taxi or an app ride to the lake
A licensed Milan taxi can take you to the lake, but there is no fixed fare for it. Milan's taxis follow one official tariff set by the Comune di Milano, with fixed fares only on a few airport and fair routes; everything else, including a trip to the lake, runs on the meter, and motorway tolls are paid on top on metered rides (Comune di Milano, taxi service). The official tariff starts at €4.10 on weekdays from 6:00 to 21:00 and charges by distance and time after that, so you know the rules but not the total until you arrive.
App rides in Milan are premium licensed cars and app-requested taxis, priced by demand when you request them. Either way, the price is set on the day. Compare the two models on chauffeur vs taxi.
Should you rent a car instead?
Plenty of visitors consider driving themselves, and on the motorway to Como it is straightforward. The difficulties come later: unfamiliar shore roads only just wide enough for two vehicles in places, very little parking in the lake towns, hotels with small forecourts, and an evening plan that depends on someone not having a glass of wine at dinner. A chauffeur also drops you at the pier and meets you at another town after the boat, which a rental car cannot do. See chauffeur vs renting a car.
A sample transfer day, Milan to Bellagio
To show how the pieces fit, here is a typical one-way move we plan for couples who spend three nights in Milan and four on the lake. Pickup at the Milan hotel at 10:00, after the morning rush. Motorway to Como, with a 45-minute stop on the lakefront and a coffee by the cathedral. On along the lake road to Bellagio, arriving in the early afternoon in time for a late lunch and check-in. The fixed price is set in the web booker when you add the stop, and the luggage stays in the car the whole time.
The same move in reverse, at the end of the stay, often finishes at Malpensa or Linate rather than in Milan. In that case book the published airport fare from the lake instead of a Milan transfer: it is the same fixed price in either direction.
