A Lake Como transfer is a pre-booked private car from one fixed point to another: an airport, a train station, a hotel, a pier or another city. On Elly8.net it is priced before you travel, per vehicle and all-in, from US$315 in a business sedan for Milan Linate to Bellagio and the lake towns and US$320 from Malpensa, with the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet included.
First-time visitors usually need more than one. The lake has no airport, its towns sit on three long arms of water, and the fastest way between two hotels is sometimes a boat rather than a road. This guide explains each kind of transfer, how the meeting works, which vehicle suits the narrow lake roads, and the mistakes we see first-timers make.
What is a private transfer on Lake Como?
A private transfer is a car and chauffeur booked for one journey at a fixed price, such as Malpensa to a Bellagio hotel or a Varenna station pickup. The driver tracks your flight or train, meets you with a name board, handles the luggage and drives you door to door. Elly8.net fares are per vehicle, not per person.
The difference from a taxi is that everything is agreed in advance: the pickup point, the vehicle, the price in US dollars and the cancellation terms. The difference from a tour is that the car goes where you need it, when you need it, and nowhere else.

Where a fare is published, the range runs from the Business Sedan to the Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. Round trips from the airports booked together cost from US$610 (Malpensa) and US$600 (Linate) in a business sedan. Everything else is priced in the web booker, which returns a fixed figure before you pay.
Airport transfers: which airport, and why it matters
Malpensa (MXP). The airport most transatlantic travellers use for Lake Como. It sits north-west of Milan, on the Como side of the city, so the drive avoids Milan altogether. See our comparison of the Malpensa to Lake Como train and private car for the full picture.
Linate (LIN). Milan's city airport, for European and domestic flights, including a connection through a European hub. The fare to Bellagio is slightly lower than from Malpensa, at US$315 in a business sedan.
Bergamo (BGY). Milan Bergamo, east of Milan, is the area's third airport, worth checking if your European flight lands there. By our routed estimate it is about 60 km (37 mi) from Bellagio, roughly 79 minutes on a clear road, and the web booker gives a fixed price.
North American travellers have specific questions about the Bellagio arrival, from passport control to departure-day timing; our Lake Como airport transfer guide for North American travellers answers them. For the service itself, see airport transfers.
Station transfers: the train to the lake and the car for the last mile
Some visitors take the train from Milan and want a car for the final stretch. Trenord trains run from Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni in about 40 minutes and to Varenna-Esino in about 64 minutes, and from Milano Cadorna to Como Lago in about 60 minutes (Trenord, Milano Centrale to Varenna).
A station pickup works like an airport pickup: give the train number and arrival time, and the chauffeur meets you at the station and takes the bags. This is a good plan for travellers who want the train's speed out of Milan but are staying at a hotel or villa well away from the station, such as up on the hillside above the lake. See train station transfers.
Hotel-to-hotel moves on the lake
Many first trips split the stay: a few nights in Como or Cernobbio, then a few in Bellagio or Tremezzo. That move is its own transfer, and it is where the lake's geography surprises people.
Tremezzo and Bellagio face each other across the water. By road, with no car ferry, the drive goes round the southern end through Como: about 31 km (20 mi) from Tremezzo to Como and about 30 km (19 mi) from Como to Bellagio, by our routed estimates, so over an hour of shore roads. By water, the public car ferry links Bellagio, Cadenabbia, Varenna and Menaggio across the centre of the lake, run by Navigazione Laghi, when it is running.
The desk plans the move on the day: car ferry where it is operating, the road round where it is not. Check the operator's notices too; in autumn 2026, vehicle service was suspended at the Varenna and Menaggio piers for works. A move from Cernobbio to Bellagio, which is on the same side of the water as Como, is about 36 km (22 mi), roughly 46 minutes.
Pier hand-overs: combining the car and the boat
On Lake Como the boat is part of getting around, and a good transfer plan uses it. Typical hand-overs:
- Drop at the pier, meet at another town. The chauffeur drops you at Bellagio's pier in the morning; you cross by passenger boat to Varenna, spend the day, and the car meets you there or back in Bellagio.
- Luggage by car, people by boat. On a hotel move, you take the scenic boat while the chauffeur takes the suitcases round by road.
- Pier to hotel. Several hotels and villas are a steep walk from the nearest landing stage. A short transfer from the pier saves carrying bags uphill.
Short hops like these are usually best booked by the hour: US$90 an hour in a business sedan up to US$180 in a Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. See hourly chauffeur.
Onward: Switzerland, the Alps and the rest of Italy
Lake Como sits close to the Swiss border, and many itineraries continue north or west. Lugano and Swiss Ticino are just over the border from the western shore. St. Moritz is a mountain drive over the Alps, and Zurich is a longer drive north. Each is booked as a fixed-price city to city car service, and the chauffeur hands over to our St. Moritz car service or Zurich chauffeurs for the rest of your stay. Bring passports for the border.
What is included in every transfer
- Flight or train tracking on airport and station pickups.
- Meet and greet inside arrivals or at the station, with a name board; see meet and greet.
- Complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. Waiting beyond the included time is billed at cost.
- Luggage handling at both ends.
- Child seats on request. Give ages when you book and the partner fits them before pickup.
- Taxes and standard gratuity. Tolls and parking are billed at cost.
Rides on Lake Como are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer, seven for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley.
Choosing the vehicle for narrow lake roads
On Lake Como the right car is a balance between space and manoeuvrability. A Business Sedan or First Class Sedan takes three passengers and two large bags and goes anywhere. A Business SUV or First Class SUV takes six passengers and six bags and is the family choice. An Executive Sprinter takes twelve passengers and twelve bags, which is right for a wedding party or a group, but some hotel driveways and village centres are too tight for it. Give us the exact hotel when you book; if access calls for two smaller cars instead of one Sprinter, the desk will say so. See the fleet and group transportation.
Groups, weddings and guests on several flights
Lake Como hosts a great many destination weddings and private events, and the guest transfers are usually the most complicated part of the logistics. Guests fly in from different cities, land at different times at Malpensa and Linate, and are staying at two or three hotels around the lake.
The way we plan it: one booking per arrival window rather than one per guest, so that a Business SUV or Executive Sprinter collects everyone landing within an hour or so of each other, with each flight tracked. Guests landing outside those windows get their own sedan. On the wedding day, Sprinters shuttle guests between hotels, the ceremony and the reception, and a First Class Sedan carries the couple. Send the guest list and flight numbers through the web booker, and the desk returns a schedule and a fixed total. See wedding transportation and Sprinter van with driver.
Corporate retreats and board meetings at lake hotels work the same way, with monthly invoicing and NDAs on request through a corporate account.
Timing your transfers
A few timings help first-timers plan. Arrivals from North America often land in the morning, before hotel check-in, so a stop in Como town on the way can fill the gap. Hotel moves work best in late morning, after check-out and before the lunchtime traffic on the shore roads. Departures to Malpensa should leave a generous margin over the clear-road time, especially on summer weekends; the desk suggests a pickup time for every airport run.
Mistakes first-timers make
- Booking "Como" when the hotel is in Bellagio. Como town and Bellagio are about 30 km apart by road. Always give the hotel's name, not just the town.
- Assuming the hotel has a driveway. Some lake hotels sit in pedestrian village centres or on the water with a small forecourt. The chauffeur plans the nearest drop-off.
- Planning a hotel move at the same time as a boat trip without telling the desk. Tell us and the luggage can travel separately.
- Leaving the airport return too late. The shore roads are slow on summer weekends. Let the desk suggest a pickup time.
- Forgetting the car ferry timetable. The ferry runs on a schedule and can be suspended for works; the road round is always there, but takes longer.
