Chauffeur hire in Manchester means a pre-booked private car and driver, licensed as private hire in England, collecting you at an agreed time and place. Through Elly8.net the price is fixed before you fly and charged in US dollars: a Manchester Airport (MAN) transfer to the city centre costs from US$120 in a business sedan to US$315 in an Executive Sprinter, and a car by the hour costs from US$85 an hour with a 3-hour minimum. The fare includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet in arrivals.
What catches North American visitors out is rarely the car itself. It is the paperwork before the flight, the difference between a black cab you can hail and a private hire car you cannot, driving on the left, and the habit of adding a tip on top. This guide works through each of those in the order you will meet them, then sets out honestly when the train or a cab is the better call and when hiring a chauffeur in Manchester pays for itself.
Do I need anything before I book a chauffeur in Manchester?
You need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter the UK on a US or Canadian passport for a visit, which GOV.UK lists at £20, and your flight number for the booking. The chauffeur does not need your passport details; the desk needs your arrival flight, your hotel or address and the number of passengers and bags.
The ETA is the step most travellers forget. According to GOV.UK, an ETA lets you visit the UK for up to six months, it costs £20, and visitors from the USA and Canada usually need one rather than a visa. GOV.UK also warns that other websites may charge more to apply, so apply through the official service. An ETA does not guarantee entry, but without one the airline may not let you board.
For the booking itself, the desk asks for four things: the flight that lands at Manchester (not the first leg if you connect in Dublin, Amsterdam or London), the drop-off address, how many people are travelling and how many large bags. That last detail decides the vehicle. On the fleet page, a Business Sedan or First Class Sedan carries three passengers and two large bags, a Business SUV or First Class SUV six passengers and six bags, and an Executive Sprinter twelve passengers and twelve bags. A couple with two large cases each is already an SUV booking, not a sedan.

Arriving at Manchester Airport
Manchester Airport handles its long-haul flights from Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, with the railway and tram station, called The Station, between them. Transatlantic arrivals tend to land in the early morning, and the border hall is where the time goes. GOV.UK's faster travel guidance lists nationals of the USA and Canada among those who can use the eGates once they hold valid permission such as an ETA, and asks families to stay together at the desk. Children have their own eGate rules, so check them before you travel.
Your chauffeur tracks the flight number on the booking and is in the arrivals area of your terminal with a name board once you come through with your bags. Waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, which matters on a morning when three wide-body aircraft land within an hour of each other. If the flight is diverted or cancelled, message the 24/7 desk and the pickup moves with it. The airport meet and greet page explains how the meeting works, and airport transfers covers the service in every city we serve.
The clear-road drive from MAN to the city centre is about 17 km (10 mi), roughly 24 minutes. At the weekday peaks the M56 and the M60 can push that past 45 minutes, and match days add their own queues. The fare does not change with the clock, and the same fixed price applies on the way back to the airport.
Black cab or private hire: the rule that surprises visitors
In England, two kinds of licensed car carry passengers for money, and they are engaged differently. A hackney carriage, the familiar black cab, can be hailed in the street or taken from a rank. A private hire vehicle, which is what a chauffeur's car is, has to be booked through a licensed operator in advance.
The government's best practice guidance for licensing authorities puts the safety message simply: unless you are hailing a locally licensed taxi in the street or at a rank, do not get into any other vehicle unless you have pre-booked it and received the operator's details to identify it. In practice that means two things for a visitor. Nobody in arrivals offering "a car into town" is a legitimate private hire driver unless you booked them, and your own chauffeur will be identifiable before you get in, because your confirmation email names the meeting point and the booking.
At the airport, Manchester Airport's taxi page says black cabs work from ranks outside both terminals and at The Station, with no booking needed. The fleet is wheelchair accessible, the cabs take at least five passengers, and cards are accepted with no added fee. Within the Manchester licensed area the fare is shown on the meter; for journeys outside Greater Manchester there is a published tariff of maximum fares, and the airport notes you may be able to negotiate a fixed fare with the driver first. The same page lists Uber, which connects riders with licensed private hire drivers, on demand or scheduled.
The honest comparison: train, tram, cab, app or chauffeur
Manchester Airport has a busy railway station of its own, and for a light traveller it is hard to beat. These numbers come from the airport's own pages.
| Option | What you pay | Time to the city centre | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train to Manchester Piccadilly | Rail fare, cheaper booked ahead | About 20 min, every 10 min | One traveller with a carry-on, hotel near Piccadilly |
| Metrolink tram | Tram fare, tap in with a contactless card | Longer than the train, every 12 min | Budget trips to a hotel by a tram stop |
| Black cab from the rank | Meter within the Manchester licensed area | Same roads as any car | Walk-up trips, up to five or six people |
| Uber or other app | Price set by the app at the time of request | Same roads, plus the walk to the pickup point | Light travellers comfortable with app pickups |
| Elly8.net chauffeur | US$120 to US$315 per vehicle, fixed | About 24 min on a clear road, met inside | Families, groups, early arrivals, meetings, a budget fixed in US$ |
The airport's train page says trains to Piccadilly take around 20 minutes and run every 10 minutes, seven days a week, with TransPennine Express and Northern, and that the walk from the terminals to The Station takes five to 15 minutes. The tram runs every 12 minutes from the same station. If you are alone, staying near Piccadilly and travelling light, take the train and keep the money.
A chauffeur earns its place when the arithmetic changes. A family of four with four cases and a stroller after an overnight flight faces the walk to The Station, a train, and then a cab or a walk at Piccadilly with the luggage. One US$160 Business SUV, door to door, is a single known number and a single vehicle. The same is true for a group of supporters heading to a hotel before a match, an executive with a 10 am meeting in Spinningfields, or anyone whose flight lands when the trains are thin. We set out the general case on chauffeur vs taxi and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft.
Tipping, currency and what the fare includes
North Americans are used to adding a tip on top of a car service fare. On an Elly8.net booking the standard gratuity is already in the fixed fare, along with the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes and meet and greet. There is no percentage to calculate at the kerb and no screen asking you to choose one. Tolls and parking are billed at cost, never marked up, and waiting beyond the included time is billed at cost as well.
The fare is quoted and charged in US dollars, so the number on your card statement is the number you saw when you booked, with no conversion from pounds on the day. For companies that matters at expense time; for families it means the transfer is paid for before the trip starts.
With a black cab, the meter fare is what you owe, and the airport notes that cabs accept cards without an added fee. App rides set their price in the app.
Driving on the left, and why most visitors leave it to someone else
England drives on the left, and Manchester is not a gentle place to learn. The city centre is a tangle of one-way streets, tram lines running through the streets, bus gates and expensive parking, and around it the M60 ring motorway meets the M56, M61 and M62 at busy junctions. A rental car also has to be parked at the hotel each night, often at a daily charge. Our chauffeur vs car rental guide sets out the trade-offs in more detail. For a short business trip or a city break, most North American visitors find that a chauffeur for the arrival, the match night and the day out, with walking and trams in between, costs less effort than a week behind the wheel.
What chauffeur hire covers in Manchester
The fixed packages on the Manchester city page cover the bookings North Americans make most often:
| Booking | Business Sedan | Business SUV | Executive Sprinter |
|---|---|---|---|
| MAN to the city centre, one way | US$120 | US$160 | US$315 |
| MAN round trip | US$230 | US$305 | US$600 |
| By the hour, 3-hour minimum | US$85 per hour | US$110 per hour | US$170 per hour |
| Private city highlights tour | US$340 | US$440 | US$680 |
| Evening out and event night | US$425 | US$550 | US$850 |
| Full-day chauffeur | US$630 | US$810 | US$1,255 |
| Day trip: the Lake District | US$785 | US$1,015 | US$1,565 |
First Class Sedan and First Class SUV prices sit between these, from US$210 and US$195 for the airport run. Every price is per vehicle, not per person.
Match days. Manchester City at the Etihad and Manchester United at Old Trafford bring road closures around both grounds. The chauffeur drops and collects at points agreed in advance, outside the closures, which is far easier than the queue for trams after the final whistle. See sports event transportation.
Days out. The signature day trip is a 10-hour day in the Lake District. Liverpool is closer: our guide to Manchester to Liverpool by car covers the drive, the stops and how a full day is priced.
By the hour. For a day of meetings, a shopping day or visits to family, book car service by the hour and the chauffeur stays with you between stops.
Business travellers and corporate accounts
Manchester is the north of England's centre for professional services, media at MediaCityUK and conferences at Manchester Central. Companies with people travelling regularly can open a corporate account with monthly invoicing, fixed US-dollar fares and NDAs on request, and use one desk for Manchester, London, Edinburgh and the rest of the 141 Elly8.net cities. The corporate roadshow day costs from US$765 in a business sedan to US$1,530 in an Executive Sprinter; see corporate car service for how executives and assistants book.
How the booking works, and the cancellation terms
- Pickup and drop-off. Enter Manchester Airport and your flight number, or Piccadilly and your train, and the address.
- Vehicle. Choose by passengers and large bags, using the seats and luggage on the fleet page.
- Reserve. Published fares go straight to checkout in US$; any other address, such as a Cheshire hotel or a multi-stop day, goes through the web booker at a fixed price. Confirmation arrives by email.
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, refunded to the original card.
Rides in Manchester are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer, seven for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley. Elly8.net is a member of LimousineWorldwide.Directory, LimousineAssociation.International, HotelsWorldwide.Directory and VacationsWorldwide.Directory. The city's own events calendar is on Visit Manchester.
Many North American trips to England continue somewhere warmer. The same desk books London, Edinburgh and Dublin, and in Spain our Seville day trip guide shows how a driver plans a day out in Andalusia.
Frequently asked questions
How much does chauffeur hire in Manchester cost?
A Manchester Airport transfer to the city centre costs from US$120 in a business sedan to US$315 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. By the hour, a business sedan costs US$85 an hour with a 3-hour minimum, and a full day costs from US$630. Every fare is fixed, charged in US$, and includes taxes, gratuity and meet and greet.
Do Americans and Canadians need an ETA to visit Manchester?
Usually, yes. GOV.UK says visitors from the USA and Canada normally need an Electronic Travel Authorisation rather than a visa, that it costs £20, and that it allows visits of up to six months. Apply through the official GOV.UK service before you fly, since other websites may charge more.
Should I tip my Manchester chauffeur?
There is no need. The standard gratuity is already included in every Elly8.net fare, along with taxes and meet and greet. If a chauffeur has gone well beyond the booking, an extra thank-you is your choice, but nothing is expected and nothing is added at the end of the ride.
Can I hail a private hire car in Manchester?
No. Black cabs can be hailed or taken from a rank, but private hire cars, including chauffeured cars, must be booked in advance through a licensed operator. Government guidance tells passengers not to get into any car other than a hailed taxi unless they pre-booked it and can identify it.
Where does the chauffeur meet me at Manchester Airport?
In the arrivals area of your terminal, Terminal 2 or Terminal 3, holding a name board, after you clear the border and collect your bags. The chauffeur tracks the flight, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, so a long passport queue does not cost you anything.
Is the train better than a chauffeur from Manchester Airport?
For one person with light luggage staying near Piccadilly, yes: trains take around 20 minutes and run every 10 minutes. For families, groups with suitcases, early or late arrivals and anyone with a meeting to reach, a fixed US$120 sedan or US$160 SUV door to door is usually simpler.
