Manchester to Liverpool by car is about 55 km (34 mi) from central Manchester to the Royal Albert Dock, roughly 50 minutes on a clear road, according to our routing on the public OSRM server. Most of the drive is motorway, west on the M62, with the slow parts at either end: getting out of central Manchester and finding your way through Liverpool's waterfront traffic. At the weekday peaks and on match days, allow well over an hour.
A private driver for the day, collecting you in Manchester, waiting in Liverpool and bringing you back, costs from US$630 in a business sedan to US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter on Elly8.net's full-day chauffeur package, fixed and charged in US dollars. A one-way transfer to a Liverpool hotel is quoted in the web booker at a fixed price. This guide covers the route, the stops worth making, an honest look at the train, and how to plan the day around Anfield, the docks or the Grand National.
How long is the drive from Manchester to Liverpool?
About 50 minutes on a clear road for roughly 55 km (34 mi) from central Manchester to the Royal Albert Dock, by our routed estimate on the public OSRM server. Weekday rush hours on the M62 and M60, roadworks and Liverpool match days can stretch it beyond an hour, so plan any fixed-time arrival with a margin.
The distances below are routed estimates from the public OSRM server, measured on a clear road. Real journeys are longer at peak times.
| From central Manchester to | Distance | Clear-road time |
|---|---|---|
| Liverpool Lime Street station | about 54 km (33 mi) | about 47 min |
| Royal Albert Dock, Liverpool waterfront | about 55 km (34 mi) | about 49 min |
| Anfield | about 54 km (34 mi) | about 46 min |
| Aintree Racecourse | about 60 km (37 mi) | about 49 min |
| Dunham Massey (a stop on the way) | about 19 km (12 mi) | about 30 min |
Arriving from the airport, the run from Manchester Airport straight to the Liverpool waterfront is about 58 km (36 mi), roughly 48 minutes on a clear road by the same routing, so a family flying into MAN and staying in Liverpool does not need to go through central Manchester at all.

The route, and where the time goes
The direct route leaves central Manchester for the M602 or the M60 ring and joins the M62 heading west. Visit Liverpool's travel guide lists the M6, M62, M58 and M56 among the motorways that serve the city region, and the M62 is the one that links the two city centres. For most of its length it is a straightforward motorway drive.
The time goes at the ends. Leaving Manchester at 8 am means queues on the M60 and at the motorway junctions; arriving in Liverpool, the approach to the city centre and the waterfront slows down, and parking near the docks fills up on busy days. That is the real case for a driver: you are dropped at the door of the museum, the stadium or the restaurant and collected from the same spot, with no car park to find and no ticket machine to feed. Parking, if the chauffeur has to wait in a paid car park, is billed at cost.
Two timing tips. Leave Manchester after the morning peak, around 9:30, and the drive is close to the clear-road time. Head home before about 4 pm on a weekday or after 7 pm, and you miss the worst of the evening traffic on the M62.
Stops worth making on the way
Dunham Massey. Just outside Manchester, near Altrincham, this National Trust estate is described by the Trust as a garden for all seasons, an ancient deer park and a house filled with treasures. The National Trust's visitor page puts it on Woodhouse Lane, off the A56, and lists opening times by month, which vary in winter. It is a detour from the most direct line but a natural first stop, about 30 minutes from the city centre, with about 45 km (28 mi) and 45 minutes onward to the Liverpool waterfront.
Anfield. Liverpool FC's ground is about 6 km (4 mi) from the waterfront. The club's stadium tours page sells stadium tours, the club museum and matchday tours; book a slot first and the car around it. On match days the streets around the ground close and fill, so tours are a non-match-day plan unless you are going to the game itself.
The Royal Albert Dock and the waterfront. The restored dock is the centre of a visitor's Liverpool, with museums, restaurants and the river. The Beatles Story welcomes visitors at the Royal Albert Dock while it prepares to move to a new home in the city centre in 2028. National Museums Liverpool runs several of the city's museums, including those on the waterfront.
Liverpool Cathedral. On the ridge above the city centre, Liverpool Cathedral describes itself as Britain's largest cathedral. It is an easy drop-off by car and a good last stop before the drive home.
A full day for most visitors looks like this: collection in Manchester at 9:30, a morning at the docks and a Beatles visit, lunch on the waterfront, the afternoon at Anfield or the Cathedral, and back in Manchester by early evening. The full-day chauffeur is built for a day like that, with the car waiting at each stop.
Driving it yourself: what North Americans should know
Plenty of visitors consider renting a car for the day. The motorway part is easy; the rest takes more care. England drives on the left, and many rental cars are manual unless you book an automatic. Roundabouts replace most four-way stops, and on the approach to both city centres the lanes split quickly, with bus lanes and tram routes in Manchester that are easy to stray into. Parking near the Liverpool waterfront and around Anfield is limited on busy days and paid by the hour.
None of that is a reason not to drive if you are confident, staying several days and touring further afield. For a single day between two cities, though, the sums are close. Add the rental, fuel, parking in Liverpool and parking again at your Manchester hotel, then subtract the time spent on navigation and looking for spaces. A Business Sedan for the full day at US$630, with the chauffeur waiting at each stop and no parking to find, often looks better once everything is counted, and it means everyone in the party, the driver included, can enjoy the day.
A sample day with a driver
9:30. Collection at your Manchester hotel. In a family SUV, car seats are fitted before pickup if you ask for them when booking.
10:00. A first stop at Dunham Massey for the deer park and the gardens, or straight on to Liverpool if the day is about the city.
11:30. Drop at the Royal Albert Dock. The chauffeur waits nearby while you visit The Beatles Story and walk the waterfront.
13:30. Lunch near the docks, then the short drive to Anfield for a pre-booked stadium tour, or up the hill to the Cathedral.
16:30. Leave Liverpool ahead of the evening rush and arrive back in Manchester in time for dinner.
That is about seven hours with the car, and the order can change around tour slots and opening times.
The train compared: when it is the better choice
Liverpool Lime Street is a major station, served by several train companies, Northern and TransPennine Express among them, according to Visit Liverpool. For one or two travellers with day bags, walking from Lime Street to the sights, the train is the cheaper and perfectly good answer, and we would say so on the phone.
| Option | What you pay | Door to door | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train, Manchester to Liverpool Lime Street | Rail fare per person | Walk or taxi at both ends | One or two people, light bags, central hotels |
| Self-drive rental | Rental, fuel and parking | Left-hand-side driving and city parking | Confident drivers on a multi-day touring trip |
| Black cab or app car | Metered or app price for the trip | Door to door, one way | A single one-way ride with no stops |
| Elly8.net full-day chauffeur | US$630 to US$1,255 per vehicle, fixed | Door to door all day, car waits at each stop | Families, groups, multi-stop days, Grand National and match days |
The calculation changes with people and stops. Four travellers on the train pay four fares and still need taxis to Anfield and back across the city. Six supporters going to an evening match need two cabs at either end and face the post-match scramble for trains. A business traveller with three meetings across Liverpool and a dinner back in Manchester needs a car between each appointment. Those are the days when a single vehicle at a fixed price is simpler and often comparable. The general trade-offs are set out on chauffeur vs taxi and chauffeur vs car rental.

Tolls and parking are billed at cost. See city to city car service.
Which vehicle. A Business Sedan or First Class Sedan carries three passengers with two large bags. A Business SUV or First Class SUV carries six passengers and six bags, the usual choice for a family with luggage. An Executive Sprinter carries up to twelve passengers and twelve bags, which suits a group of supporters or a corporate team; details on the fleet page and Sprinter van with driver.
Match days, concerts and the Grand National
Match days in Liverpool. Evening and weekend matches change the drive completely. The chauffeur drops at an agreed point outside the closures and collects you from a point agreed in advance after the final whistle. See sports event transportation.
The Grand National. The Randox Grand National Festival at Aintree runs from 8 to 10 April 2027, according to The Jockey Club. Aintree is about 60 km (37 mi) from central Manchester, roughly 49 minutes on a clear road, but race-day traffic on the approach roads is slow. A driver who drops you at your entrance and waits for the last race saves the long queues for trains and taxis afterwards. Book early; the price stays fixed whichever day you choose. For hospitality groups, see event transportation.
Concerts and nights out. For an evening in Liverpool and the drive home, book the car by the hour for the length of the evening, with the chauffeur following English rules on everything inside the vehicle.
Corporate days between the two cities
Many companies have offices in both cities, and a day of meetings across Manchester and Liverpool is a common corporate booking. The corporate roadshow day, from US$765 in a business sedan to US$1,530 in an Executive Sprinter, keeps one car and chauffeur with the visitor all day. A corporate account adds monthly invoicing, fixed US-dollar fares and NDAs on request; see roadshow chauffeur for multi-meeting days.
