A Rome airport transfer that is genuinely waiting for you comes down to three things done before you leave home: the right airport and flight number, an honest count of passengers and bags, and the exact address of where you are staying. With those, your chauffeur tracks the flight from departure, stands in the arrivals hall with your name once you have cleared passport control and baggage claim, and walks you to a car sized for your group.

With Elly8.net, the fare is fixed when you book and charged in US dollars: from US$180 in a business sedan from Fiumicino (FCO) to the historic centre and from US$125 from Ciampino (CIA), per vehicle and all-in, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. This guide is the practical part: what to send, what happens on the day, and what to do if the day does not go to plan.

How do you book a Rome airport transfer that waits for you?

Book a fixed-price transfer before you fly with your flight number, the airport, the number of passengers and bags, any child seats and the exact hotel address. The chauffeur tracks the flight and waits inside arrivals with a name board. Elly8.net fares start at US$180 from Fiumicino and US$125 from Ciampino per vehicle.

The most common reason a transfer goes wrong anywhere is missing information, not a missing driver. A flight number lets the chauffeur follow the aircraft rather than a clock. A bag count decides whether a sedan is enough. A precise hotel address matters more in Rome than in most cities, because the historic centre sits inside a limited traffic zone with pedestrian squares and narrow lanes.

What to send when you book

DetailWhy it matters in Rome
Flight number and dateThe chauffeur tracks the flight, so an early or late landing is handled without a call
Airport: Fiumicino (FCO) or Ciampino (CIA)Rome has two airports about 33 km apart; most North American flights use Fiumicino
Passengers, including childrenSedans carry three passengers, SUVs six, the Executive Sprinter twelve
Number of large bagsSedans carry two bags, SUVs six, the Sprinter twelve
Child or booster seats, with agesSeats are fitted before pickup
Exact hotel name and street addressPlans the approach through the ZTL and to hotels on pedestrian streets
Mobile number with country codeLets the chauffeur or the desk reach you if plans change
Lead passenger nameThe name on the board, which can be different from the person booking

Capacity figures come from our fleet page. If you are unsure between two classes, choose the larger one: a business SUV costs US$235 from Fiumicino against US$180 for a sedan, and avoids the problem of a fourth suitcase that will not close the boot.

Fiumicino or Ciampino, and which terminal

Nonstop flights from the United States and Canada land at Fiumicino. Aeroporti di Roma's terminal guide assigns Terminal 3 to extra-Schengen and intercontinental flights and Terminal 1 to domestic and Schengen flights. In practice, that means:

  • A nonstop flight from North America normally arrives at Terminal 3.
  • A connection through another Schengen-area hub, such as a change in another European airport, usually arrives at Terminal 1, because you cleared passport control at the first European airport.
  • A low-cost European flight may arrive at Ciampino, south-east of the city, which handles mostly short-haul traffic.

Some airlines use more than one terminal, so do not worry about getting this exactly right. Give us the flight number and the chauffeur checks the terminal on the day. If you are arriving by private aviation, see private jet and FBO transfers, where the meeting point is the handler's terminal instead.

What happens after you land

1. Passport control. On a flight from outside the Schengen area, passport control comes first, and after an overnight flight it can be busy when several long-haul aircraft arrive close together.

2. Baggage claim. Collect your bags, including any oversize items such as strollers or golf bags.

3. The arrivals hall. Walk through to the public arrivals area. Your chauffeur is there with a name board showing the lead passenger's name. Because the flight is tracked and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, a slow passport queue or a late belt is already allowed for.

4. The walk to the car. The chauffeur helps with the bags and walks you to the vehicle. Aeroporti di Roma's chauffeur service page explains that hire cars with driver, known in Italy as NCC, must be booked in advance, cannot be taken from the taxi rank, and wait in the area in front of the airport exit. That is where your car will be.

5. The drive. Fiumicino to the historic centre is about 34 km (21 mi), roughly 54 minutes on a clear road; Ciampino is about 18 km (11 mi), roughly 30 minutes. Commuter hours on the motorway and along the Tiber slow both. Your fare does not change.

Our airport meet and greet page describes the hand-over in more general terms, and airport transfers covers how it works in every city we serve.

What to ignore on the way out

ADR warns travellers to be careful of transport offers made inside the airport by unauthorised people, and notes that vehicles near the exit may be operating without a permit. Italy's tourism portal gives the same advice for airports and stations across the country. If someone approaches you in the arrivals hall offering a car, decline politely and look for your name board. Your chauffeur will not ask you to pay anything on the day; the fare was settled when you booked.

Your phone and the first hour

You do not need mobile data to find your chauffeur: the name board is in the arrivals hall. A working phone still helps if a bag is lost or a connection is missed. Before you fly, check whether your plan includes roaming in Italy, or buy a travel pass or an eSIM, and make sure the number in your booking is the one you will carry. Switch off airplane mode once you land; if the chauffeur or the desk needs to reach you while you are still in passport control, a message is the quickest way.

When the day does not go to plan

The flight is early. The chauffeur sees the new landing time and adjusts. Nothing for you to do.

The flight is late or diverted. The same applies to a delay. If a diversion or cancellation changes your arrival day, contact the 24/7 desk as soon as you can and we rebook the transfer for the new flight.

A bag is missing. Lost-baggage desks take time. Message or call the desk to let us know you are at the baggage service counter; the chauffeur keeps waiting.

You cannot see the chauffeur. Stay in the arrivals hall rather than walking out to the kerb, and contact the desk using the details in your confirmation email.

Your plans change before you travel. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, refunded to the original card. The full terms are on the cancellation policy page.

What the transfer costs

All Rome airport fares are fixed, per vehicle and in US dollars, and include the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Tolls and parking are billed at cost. The same fare applies in either direction, so your departure transfer costs the same as your arrival.

The historic centre is the reference point for these fares, and the same prices cover central Rome addresses such as Prati near the Vatican and Trastevere. For addresses further out, the web booker returns a fixed quote. Our Rome airport to city center guide lists routed drive times to the main hotel districts.

For a fair comparison: the Leonardo Express train is €14 per person to Termini and a licensed taxi from Fiumicino is a fixed €55 per car inside the Aurelian Walls. Our Rome airport taxi and rideshare guide explains when those are the better choice.

The hotel end: limited traffic zones and pedestrian streets

Rome's centre is protected by limited traffic zones. Roma Mobilità lists taxis and licensed hire cars with driver among the vehicles exempt from the ZTL Centro Storico and Tridente rules, so your chauffeur can take you into the zone. What no car can do is drive onto a pedestrian square. For hotels on or just off Piazza Navona, Piazza di Spagna or the streets around the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain, the chauffeur stops at the nearest permitted point and helps with the bags for the last few metres.

That is why the exact hotel name matters. With it, the partner knows the approach, the kerb and whether the hotel has a door attendant before you arrive.

Arriving as a family or a group

Families and groups gain the most from a transfer that is already waiting, because they lose the most time when it is not. A family of five off an overnight flight does not want to split between two taxis at the rank, or wait while one parent queues and the other watches the bags and the children.

Book one vehicle for everyone. A business SUV or first class SUV seats six with six bags; an Executive Sprinter seats twelve with twelve bags, which suits a wedding party, a reunion or a team arriving on the same flight. Prices are per vehicle, never per person, so the Sprinter at US$470 from Fiumicino is the same fixed fare whether eight or twelve people travel in it.

If your group arrives on different flights, book one transfer per flight, or tell the desk the arrival times and let us suggest the most sensible split. Child and booster seats are fitted before pickup when you give the children's ages, and a stroller counts as one of the bags. For larger parties, see group transportation.

Booking for someone else

Executive assistants, family members and travel planners often book Rome transfers for other people. Enter the traveller's name as the lead passenger so the board shows the right name, and add the traveller's mobile number. Travel agents and hotel concierges can book on account through travel agent accounts and hotel accounts, and companies can open a corporate account with fixed fares at both airports, monthly invoicing and NDAs on request.

Departures: getting back to Fiumicino

The return trip is booked the same way, with your flight number so the desk can see the departure time. Build in the check-in time your airline recommends for an international flight, then add the drive: about 54 minutes on a clear road from the historic centre to Fiumicino, longer at commuter hours. The chauffeur will suggest a pickup time when you book. The fare is the same fixed price as your arrival.

If you are flying out of Ciampino, the drive is shorter, about 30 minutes on a clear road, and the fare starts at US$125 in a business sedan. More answers on common questions are on our FAQ, and a comparison with the app's premium option is in our Uber Black in Rome guide.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the driver meet you at Fiumicino?

Inside the arrivals hall of your terminal, holding a name board with the lead passenger's name, once you have cleared passport control and collected your bags. Nonstop flights from North America normally use Terminal 3. The chauffeur tracks the flight, so a change of terminal or landing time is handled automatically.

What happens if your flight to Rome is delayed?

The chauffeur tracks the flight and adjusts to the actual landing time, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. If a cancellation or diversion moves your arrival to another day, contact the 24/7 desk and the transfer is rebooked for the new flight.

How far ahead should you book a Rome airport transfer?

As soon as your flight is confirmed. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, so booking early costs nothing if plans change in good time, and it secures the vehicle class you need for busy weeks such as Holy Week or the Christmas period.

Is the price the same from the hotel to the airport?

Yes. Every Elly8.net airport fare in Rome is the same fixed price in either direction. A business sedan between the historic centre and Fiumicino is US$180 each way, and between the centre and Ciampino US$125, per vehicle and all-in. Round trips are also published, from US$345 for Fiumicino and US$240 for Ciampino in a business sedan.

Do you pay the driver anything in Rome?

No. The fare is paid by card in US dollars when you book, and it already includes taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet. Only tolls, parking or waiting beyond the included time are billed afterwards, at cost. There is no cash to carry for the chauffeur.

Can the chauffeur reach a hotel inside the ZTL?

Yes. Licensed hire cars with driver are exempt from the ZTL Centro Storico and Tridente rules, according to Roma Mobilità. On pedestrian squares such as Piazza Navona, the chauffeur stops at the nearest permitted point and helps with the bags.
