Nice to Monaco is a short trip with a lot of choice. From the Promenade des Anglais to Monte-Carlo is about 21 km (13 mi), roughly 26 minutes on a clear road by our routing, and the regional train from Nice-Ville takes 23 minutes. From Nice Côte d'Azur Airport the drive is longer, about 35 km (21 mi) and 45 minutes on a clear road, because the airport sits on the far west side of the city.
For one or two people with carry-on bags, the train is quick and inexpensive, and we would recommend it. A private car earns its place for long-haul arrivals, families, heavy luggage, evenings out and days that take in Villefranche or Èze along the way. An Elly8.net transfer from Nice airport to Monte-Carlo costs from US$220 per vehicle in a business sedan to US$575 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed in dollars and all-in.
How do you get from Nice to Monaco?
By TER train from Nice-Ville in 23 minutes, with about sixty services a day; by ZOU bus along the corniche; by bus 80 or a €95 fixed taxi from the airport; by helicopter in about seven minutes; or by private car, from US$220 per vehicle from Nice airport to Monte-Carlo with Elly8.net.
The first question is where you are starting. Travellers who land and go straight to Monaco face a different choice from those who spend a few nights in Nice first and then move along the coast. The airport has its own coach, taxi rank and helicopter link; the city centre has the station and the corniche buses.
Rides in Monaco are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
Distances and drive times
The airport figure below comes from our Monaco fact sheet; the others are routed estimates on the public road network for a clear road. Summer traffic, the evening rush and event days add time.

Motorway or coast road into Monaco
The Monaco Tourist Office's road access page describes the options clearly. The A8 motorway, La Provençale, is the fast road, reaching Monaco by exit 56 for Monaco and Cap-d'Ail or exit 57 for La Turbie, both of which lead down through a tunnel to the Rock, Fontvieille, Port Hercule and Monte-Carlo, and by exit 58 for Beausoleil, near Larvotto.
The older roads are the scenic ones. The Basse Corniche follows the sea from the airport along the Promenade des Anglais, past Port Lympia and Cap-d'Ail, and enters Monaco on boulevard Charles III. The Moyenne Corniche winds through Èze on the hillside. The Grande Corniche, the oldest, runs high above the sea between Nice and Roquebrune.
For a transfer, the chauffeur chooses between the motorway and the coast road on live traffic; the fixed fare does not change. For a day out, ask for the corniches, which is where the views are.
The train: fast, frequent and good for light bags
The coastal railway is the best-value way between the two. According to the tourist office's train page, about sixty TER services a day run each way between Nice and Monaco, taking 23 minutes, and no reservation is needed. The Nice Côte d'Azur Tourist Office adds on its regional trains page that a TER ticket is valid on any train that day for the route you chose.
Two things matter for American travellers with suitcases. First, Monaco-Monte-Carlo station is underground, reached by escalators, stairs and passages, with exits for Monte-Carlo, the Parvis Sainte-Dévote towards the port, La Condamine, and Fontvieille and the Rock; several have lifts and there are taxi stands. Second, Nice has four stations, and the one near the airport is Nice Saint-Augustin, a short walk from the Grand Arénas tram stop and about seven minutes on foot from Terminal 1.
The fair verdict: for a day visit from a Nice hotel with a small bag, take the train. With three large cases, a stroller, a late arrival or a dinner reservation at a set time, the stairs and the walk at each end add up.
The bus: corniche lines and the airport express
From central Nice, the ZOU regional network runs line 600 from Nice to Menton through Monaco and line 602 from Nice through Èze to Monaco, both described by the tourist office as a practical and panoramic alternative, especially on the Moyenne Corniche. Tickets can be bought on board or in the ZOU app.
From the airport, express line 80 runs to Monaco and Menton every 30 minutes, leaving from bay 1 at the Terminal 2 bus station, according to the airport's public transport page. The line 80 site lists a single ticket at €21.40 and a mini-group ticket for three to nine people travelling together from €45. Tickets must be bought before boarding, or by tapping a bank card on the validator.
Taxi and helicopter
The Nice airport rank, at entrance A3 at both terminals, charges a fixed €95 to Monaco as a 2026 indicative fare excluding supplements. For the return, Taxi Monaco charges €100 from the principality to the airport by motorway. Our Monaco taxi guide covers the border rules that sit behind those two numbers.
The helicopter is the fastest crossing. The tourist office describes a flight of about seven minutes from the airport to the Monaco heliport in Fontvieille, around fifty round trips a day, and a free minibus to your hotel included with the booking. On a jammed August afternoon, for a light traveller, it is a very good answer.

What a private car costs from Nice

The round trip costs from US$420. The chauffeur tracks your final flight and meets you inside arrivals with a name board; waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. See Nice airport to Monaco transfers.

As a day out. The signature Nice day trip is the six-hour Èze and Monaco package, from US$500 in a business sedan, US$635 in a business SUV and US$995 in an Executive Sprinter, listed with our other packages.
All fares are per vehicle, not per person, and include the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Tolls and parking are billed at cost.
A day from Nice to Monaco by car
A car turns the transfer into the best day on the coast. Leave the Promenade on the Basse Corniche to Villefranche-sur-Mer, about 14 minutes away, for the bay and the old town. Detour to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat for the gardens of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. Climb to Èze, the hilltop village and its exotic garden, about 12 minutes from Villefranche. Then drop into Monaco, 13 minutes on, for the Rock and the Prince's Palace, lunch on the harbour and the Casino square in the evening. The chauffeur waits between stops and the luggage stays in the car.
For guests already based in Monaco who want the reverse, see private city tours and the Monaco chauffeur page.
Landing from North America: the first hour
Seasonal nonstops connect Nice with New York, Washington and Montréal in summer, according to the tourist office, but most of the year North American travellers arrive through Paris, London or another hub. That shapes the first hour more than any fare table does. Give us the flight number of the segment that lands in Nice, not the first leg from home. The chauffeur tracks that flight and adjusts to an early or late landing, and if the connection is missed, the 24/7 desk moves the pickup to the new flight without a new booking.
Nice has two terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, linked by a free tram, so check which one your airline uses. The chauffeur waits in the arrivals hall of the right terminal with a name board, walks you to the car and loads the bags, and you are on the motorway while the coach queue is still forming. On a late arrival, after the trains and buses thin out, that is the difference between a calm drive and a long wait.
Event days on this stretch of coast
The coast between Nice and Monaco carries everyone on the busiest weekends. The Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco from 4 to 6 June 2027 closes roads inside the circuit during sessions, and the Monaco Yacht Show from 22 to 25 September 2027 fills Port Hercule. Expect every way of getting there to be busier than usual. If you are staying in Nice for either event, book the car early and let the desk time the run around the closures, with drop-offs at the nearest permitted point.
Tipping, payment and paperwork
North American travellers often ask about tipping. Elly8.net fares already include standard gratuity, so nothing more is expected; anything extra is your choice. Payment is by card in US dollars when you reserve, which avoids a currency question at the kerb. For taxis, pay the driver in euros and keep the receipt; the airport asks for it with any fare complaint. For business travel, a corporate account puts every ride on a monthly invoice.
When the train wins, and when the car does
Take the train for a day visit with light bags, outside the busiest hours. Take the bus if you want the corniche views on a budget. Take the helicopter if speed matters and you travel light.
Book the car when you land after a long-haul night with luggage, when you are four or more, when you need child seats, when the day includes Villefranche or Èze, or when the time is fixed, such as a dinner or the Grand Prix on 4 to 6 June 2027. For the broader view, read chauffeur vs airport shuttle. Coming from further west instead, our guide to Cannes to Monaco covers that longer drive.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the train from Nice to Monaco?
The Monaco Tourist Office gives 23 minutes from Nice, with about sixty TER services a day in each direction and no reservation needed. Monaco station is underground, with exits for Monte-Carlo, the port, La Condamine and Fontvieille. The drive from the Promenade des Anglais is about 26 minutes on a clear road by our routing.
How much is a private car from Nice airport to Monaco?
A fixed Elly8.net transfer to Monte-Carlo costs from US$220 in a business sedan, US$290 in a business SUV and US$575 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. It includes the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet, with tolls and parking billed at cost. The same fare applies on the way back.
Is the train or the car better with luggage?
The car, in most cases. The train is quick, but Monaco station is underground and both ends involve escalators or lifts. A Business SUV takes six passengers and six bags door to door. For one person with a carry-on, the train is the sensible choice.
Can we stop in Èze on the way?
Yes. Book by the hour from Nice, at US$90 an hour in a business sedan with a 3-hour minimum, or take the six-hour Èze and Monaco day trip from US$500. The chauffeur waits while you walk the village and its exotic garden.
How much is a taxi from Nice airport to Monaco?
The airport lists a fixed €95 from the rank, a 2026 indicative fare excluding supplements. The rank is at entrance A3 at both terminals. In the other direction, Taxi Monaco charges €100 to the airport by motorway. A pre-booked Elly8.net car costs from US$220 per vehicle either way.
Is the helicopter worth it?
For a light traveller on a busy day, often yes. The tourist office describes a flight of about seven minutes with a free minibus to your hotel included. Families with luggage, child seats or a fixed arrival time usually find a door-to-door car simpler.
