The best Budapest day trip by private driver is the Danube Bend: Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom strung along the river north of the city, a loop of about 116 km (72 mi) that takes under two and a half hours of driving on a clear road. It is the Elly8.net signature package from Budapest, a 6-hour day from US$470 in a business sedan to US$940 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle and all-in. Gödöllő, Hollókő, Eger and the north shore of Lake Balaton are the other trips that fit into a single day.
Rides in Budapest are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. This guide is for travellers from the United States and Canada who have two or three days in Budapest, perhaps at the start or end of a river cruise, and want to see Hungary beyond the embankment without renting a car, reading Hungarian road signs or arguing with a parking machine.
Which Budapest day trip is worth a private driver?
The Danube Bend is the strongest case: three towns on one riverbank road, each worth an hour or two, and awkward to link without a car in a single day. Gödöllő's royal palace suits a half day. Eger, Hollókő and Lake Balaton are each about 100 to 135 km away, so they fill a long day with a driver.
Our desk works to a simple rule for day trips: the road should take no more than about a third of the day. By that measure the Danube Bend and Gödöllő are easy, Hollókő is comfortable, and Eger and Balaton are full days that reward an early start. The distances below are routed estimates from the Danube embankment on a clear road, calculated with the public OSRM routing service; summer weekends and the M0 ring road at rush hour add time.

The Danube Bend: Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom
North of Budapest the Danube swings west and then east again around the Visegrád hills, and three very different towns sit along the bend. The loop below is how our partners usually run the signature day, but the order is yours to change.
Szentendre, first stop. About 21 km (13 mi) from the embankment, roughly 27 minutes on a clear road, Szentendre is the artists' town of painted houses, small galleries and riverside cafés. Just outside it is the Hungarian Open Air Museum (Skanzen), where rebuilt village houses and farmsteads show how rural Hungarians lived one and two centuries ago. Families with children often spend longer here than they planned, so tell the chauffeur if you want the museum as well as the old town; it changes the timing.
Visegrád, the middle of the bend. About 22 km (14 mi) further upriver, roughly 24 minutes by car, Visegrád is where the views open up. The royal palace remains are by the river; the citadel sits high above it, and the road up is the part of the day where a car earns its keep, because the hill is steep and the walking route long. From the top the whole bend lies below you.
Esztergom, the last stop. Another 23 km (14 mi), about 26 minutes, brings you to Esztergom Basilica, the great domed church on the hill above the river, with a treasury open to visitors and the far bank of the Danube already in Slovakia. Esztergom to the Danube embankment is about 51 km (32 mi) by the faster inland road, about 65 minutes, so the drive home is quicker than the river road out.
How the 6 hours work. The chauffeur collects you from your hotel or ship, drives the whole loop and waits at each stop. Six hours allows roughly an hour and a quarter at each town plus lunch, with the driving in between. If you want a long lunch by the river and both the Skanzen and the citadel, add hours by the hour at the published rate, or book the full-day chauffeur instead. The signature package costs from US$470 in a business sedan, US$610 in a business SUV, US$720 in a First Class SUV and US$775 in a First Class Sedan to US$940 in an Executive Sprinter.
Gödöllő: a half day at the royal palace
East of the city, Gödöllő Royal Palace is the palace most closely tied to Queen Elisabeth, the empress the world calls Sisi; her rooms, garden and veranda are part of the visit, along with a baroque theatre and the park. It is about 33 km (21 mi) from the embankment, roughly 35 minutes on a clear road.
Gödöllő is the trip for a morning or an afternoon rather than a whole day. Book Budapest car service by the hour, from US$85 an hour in a business sedan to US$170 in an Executive Sprinter with a 3-hour minimum, or the 4-hour private city highlights tour, from US$340 in a business sedan to US$680 in a Sprinter, and spend the rest of the time in the city. A useful pairing for cruise guests: Gödöllő in the morning after disembarking, with the luggage in the car, then straight on to the airport for an evening flight.
Hollókő: a village on the World Heritage List
The Old Village of Hollókő and its Surroundings is listed by UNESCO as an outstanding example of a deliberately preserved traditional settlement set in protected countryside. It sits in the Cserhát hills about 98 km (61 mi) from the embankment, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes on a clear road, and the last stretch is a winding country road where an experienced driver matters more than a fast one.
Hollókő is a quiet day: a walk along the two village streets, a walk into the surrounding hills, a long lunch, and back in the late afternoon. The full-day chauffeur, 8 hours from US$630 in a business sedan to US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter, covers it with time to spare. Public transport to Hollókő is limited, which is exactly why a car makes this trip easy rather than impossible.
Eger: the castle, the old town and the cellars
Eger is about 133 km (83 mi) north-east of Budapest, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes on a clear road, most of it on the M3 motorway. Eger Castle, with its casemates, exhibitions and history museum, stands above the old town, and Eger is also one of Hungary's wine towns; the castle's own site has a section on winemaking in Eger.
This is the day trip where a private driver solves a real problem: wine tastings and a long drive home do not mix. The chauffeur waits while you taste and drives the motorway back while you sleep. Eight hours is tight once you add 3 hours and 20 minutes of driving; most guests book the full-day chauffeur and add an hour or two at the hourly rate, or book by the hour from the start (the booker allows up to 12 hours at checkout). As arithmetic for comparison only, 10 hours by the hour in a business sedan comes to US$850; in an Executive Sprinter, which seats up to 12 with luggage room, it is US$1,700 for the whole vehicle.
Tihany and the north shore of Lake Balaton
Lake Balaton is Hungary's big summer lake, and the Tihany peninsula, about 122 km (76 mi) from the embankment and roughly 1 hour 40 minutes on a clear road, is one of its most rewarding stops: an abbey on the ridge and views over the water from both sides. The north shore wine villages are a short drive along the lake.
Outside summer, Balaton is quiet and many lakeside places keep shorter hours, so this is a trip for May to September. In July and August the M7 motorway towards the lake is busy on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings; plan a weekday if you can. Book it the same way as Eger: the full-day chauffeur, with hours added as needed.
Who should not book a driver for a day trip
Fairness matters here. If you are travelling alone or as a couple, with light bags and a flexible plan, Szentendre alone is easy without a car, and a river boat is part of the experience on summer days. A private driver makes sense when the day links several places, when someone in the party cannot walk far, when children need child seats, or when wine is involved. It also makes sense for groups: four or five adults in a Business SUV, or up to twelve in an Executive Sprinter, share one fixed price per vehicle, and the per-person arithmetic soon beats separate tour tickets.
Luggage matters on cruise days. According to the fleet specifications, a business sedan or First Class Sedan takes up to 3 passengers and 2 large bags, a Business SUV or First Class SUV up to 6 passengers and 6 bags, and an Executive Sprinter up to 12 passengers and 12 bags. If you are leaving a ship in the morning and flying out at night, pick the vehicle for the bags, not just the people. More detail is on the fleet page.
How a day trip booking works
- Choose the day. The Danube Bend has its own package on the Budapest prices panel. For Gödöllő, choose hourly or the city tour; for Eger, Hollókő or Balaton, choose the full-day chauffeur.
- Choose the vehicle. Business Sedan, Business SUV, First Class Sedan, First Class SUV or Executive Sprinter, at the fixed price shown.
- Reserve. Press Reserve now and pay by card in US$, or use the web booker for a custom route, such as a pickup from a cruise berth with luggage and a drop at the airport. Confirmation arrives by email with the chauffeur's details.
Prices include the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity; motorway tolls, parking and waiting beyond the booked time are billed at cost. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, refunded to the original card.
Combining a day trip with the rest of the journey
Most of our Budapest day trips are booked alongside a Budapest airport transfer, from US$115 in a business sedan to US$300 in an Executive Sprinter from Liszt Ferenc International Airport to the Danube embankment, and the same fixed fare for the trip back out. River cruise passengers book the berth pickup through cruise port transfers, and many use a day on the Danube Bend to fill the gap between leaving the ship and a late flight. See also private city tours, hourly chauffeur service and, for estates and cellars elsewhere, wine tours.
If Budapest is one stop on a longer trip, the same desk runs day trips elsewhere: our guide to an Istanbul day trip with a private driver covers the Black Sea coast and Bursa, and the Warsaw to Krakow by private car guide covers the long drive across Poland. Nearby cities on the same booker include the Vienna car service, the Prague chauffeur and Warsaw airport transfers. Frequently asked questions
How much is a Danube Bend day trip from Budapest by private driver?
The Elly8.net signature day trip to the Danube Bend, Szentendre and Visegrád, is a 6-hour package from US$470 in a business sedan, US$610 in a business SUV and US$775 in a First Class Sedan to US$940 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle, not per person. It includes the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity.
Can we add Esztergom to the Danube Bend package?
Yes. Esztergom is about 23 km (14 mi) beyond Visegrád, roughly 26 minutes on a clear road, and the drive back to Budapest from there is about 65 minutes. Six hours covers all three towns at a brisk pace; for a relaxed lunch and the Skanzen as well, add hours at the hourly rate.
Is Eger too far for a day trip from Budapest?
No, but it is a long day. Eger is about 133 km (83 mi) away, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes each way on a clear road. Most guests book the full-day chauffeur and add an hour or two by the hour, so the castle, the old town and a cellar visit are not rushed.
Can the driver pick us up from our river cruise ship?
Yes. Give us the ship name, cruise line and berth from your cruise documents and the time you expect to disembark. The chauffeur meets you on the embankment, loads the luggage, and the day trip can end at your hotel or at Budapest Airport for an evening flight.
Are child seats available for a day trip?
Yes. Ask for child or booster seats when you book and give the children's ages; the partner fits them before pickup. A Business SUV or Executive Sprinter leaves room for strollers and a picnic bag as well as the seats.
Do we pay the driver's lunch or parking?
The fixed price includes the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity. Parking fees, motorway tolls and any waiting beyond the booked hours are billed at cost; you do not need to pay for the chauffeur's meal.
